5. J.K. Simmons in Being the Ricardos - Simmons is completely fine, if also completely insubstantial, in his grumpy portrayal of classic grump William Frawley.
Best Scene: Table Read.
4. Jesse Plemons in The Power of the Dog - Plemons effectively establishes his character's state of being caught under his brother's thumb, though finds little variation after a certain point.
Best Scene: "Apologizing" for Phil to Rose.
3. Troy Kotsur in CODA - Kotsur is bad in the comic scenes he's given, but makes up for them through the honesty he brings in his dramatic scenes.
Best Scene: Talk on the pickup truck bed.
2. Ciarán Hinds in Belfast - Hinds represents the virtues of Belfast through his warm, humorous and heartfelt performance.
Best Scene: Words of wisdom.
1. Kodi Smit-McPhee in The Power of the Dog - Good predictions Maciej, Emi Grant, Aidan, Robert, Tahmeed, Mitchell, Anonymous, RatedRStar, Luke, David Jones and Matthew Brown. A foregone conclusion, Smit-McPhee effortlessly realizes a very tricky character in his performance that so artfully maneuvers around the truth while also slowly revealing it.
Best Scene: Rolling a cigarette.

Probably the weakest line supporting line up of the last five years; Only 2018 really gives it competition.
That being said, it'll probably have one of the most unconventional winners, unless the academy changes their vote last minute to Kotsur or Hinds (more likely for the former than the latter, I believe).
Louis: Your top 10 Ciaran Hinds moments.
RIP Ian McDonald
RIP Ian McDonald. King Crimson were one of the best bands to ever exist.
RIP Ian McDonald
Also, glad to see that I'm not the only one who loves the cigarette scene from The Power Of The Dog. Stands alongside the "Light House" scene from Titane as my favorite scene of the year.
Louis, I predicted the lineup correctly yet my prediction has vanished.
R.I.P. Ian McDonald.
I don't think I'll ever stop regretting how long it took me to get around "In The Court of The Crimson King".
Louis: I've noticed some predictions have been deleted from both the lineup page and Plemons review. I definitely remember Glenn, Thomas and Stephen Patterson having two predictions and they went with the same one the majority went with in the end which turned out to be the correct one.
Louis: I was actually asking for your thoughts on the pickup truck scene, though I do agree with your thoughts on the closing montage.
Anyway my request is a backlog review of Toshiro Mifune in The Bad Sleep Well.
Wait, my prediction got deleted. Not exactly happy about this. :(
I also had the correct prediction in Plemons’s review as well, since I usually make mine after the first review is posted.
Could I have your costume design top ten next.
Louis: Mine's been erased as well. It could've been an admin error.
I've noticed some random comments I've made have been deleted, though I assumed it was just because I was being annoying about Mike Faist's snub.
I shall request Peter Mullan in My Name Is Joe.
I can tell all of you I have not deleted any of the predictions, however Blogger has a habit of randomly changing functions, so I'll keep an eye on the spam folder in the future to see if anything is being sent there.
Mitchell:
Because of how unconventional of a winner Smit-McPhee would be, I do think Kotsur has a good chance for the upset, though I am not predicting him.

Hinds:
1. Words of Wisdom - Belfast
2. After the battle - Game of Thrones

7. Before his execution - Game of Thrones
8. Phone Bomb - Munich
9. Final Negotiations - The Sum of All Fears
10. Their job - Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Calvin:
Well therefore there is the other scene, and it is where the innate drama does work because it is most focused on the performances hitting an honest reality of the situation.

10. Cruella
I'll request Vin Diesel in Find Me Guilty (2006 Lead).
Admittedly, I'm going to have to save my request for a while.
The years I'm looking at are 97', 04', 07' and 09', since they've only gotten one bonus round thus far. That said, I'm struggling to think of performances from those years that not many people would think of, or one's where Louis' thoughts haven't already been stated.
Mitchell: I think 97 is coming up very very soon.
My request is Tim Meadows in Mean Girls
Before I make my request, are we allowed to have more than one request for the same year and in the same category?
Robert: Got to say...wasn't expecting that one, but I'm somewhow fine with it.
Although I must admit, the last time I watched "Mean Girls" was in high school/early college, and I wonder how well it holds up today.
Mitchell: I actually only saw it for the first time last year, too.
Robert: Thoughts?
God I love Tim Meadows.
I enjoyed Death on the Nile, weird aesthetic choices and not all the additions worked but overall it's fun.
Branagh: 4
Bateman: 3.5
Bening: 4/4.5
Brand: 3.5
Fazal: 3
French: 3
Gadot: 2.5
Hammer: 2.5
Leslie: 2.5
Mackey: 3.5
Okonedo: 4/4.5
Saunders: 3
Wright: 3.5
Calvin: 'He did not pay for drugs, not once'.
Louis: If the Academy had stuck with the “10 nominees guaranteed” rule in Best Picture since they’d expanded the category, which films do you think would’ve filled out the lineups since then?
(I.e. #9 and #10 last year, #10 for 2019, etc.)
Aidan:If you have won multiple requests then nothing holds you back from making that move, I presume.
On a diffrent note, does requesting a TV movie performance count and if so, are they a part of official lineups or just a bonus review?
Louis: Your #8-#10 for Character in 2021
You'll have to ask Louis about that. He could take it but wouldn't expect him to do it until after the bonus rounds are complete.
Aidan: I think you can do that, I did request Gosling and Safary for 2007 Lead (although I switched Safary over to Aamir Khan, who is supporting).
Tahmeed: I briefly considered Will Smith for "I Am Legend" in 07', but I believe Louis has already gave his rating for that performance. Also, while that is one of Smith's better leading turns, I have a feeling his upcoming review will overshadow it.
Bryan: I'll take a crack.
2011: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2012: Skyfall or Flight
2013: Blue Jasmine
2014: Foxcatcher and Interstellar
2015: Carol and Inside Out
2016: Jackie
2017: Mudbound
2018: Can You Ever Forgive Me? and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (I want to say First Man but it really seems like the Academy did not care for that film at all by the end...what an awful year)
2019: Knives Out
2020: One Night in Miami and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm
Might get some looks for this then, but I'll request Al Pacino in The Godfather Part III for 1990 Lead, as I'm not a fan of the film but think Pacino was in tune to end off Michael's story where the film wasn't.
Bryan:
2011: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
2012: Skyfall
2013: Blue Jasmine
2014: Foxcatcher and Nightcrawler
2015: Carol and Star Wars: The Force Awakens
2016: Jackie (really can't think of what else would've been close)
2017: I, Tonya
2018: Can You Ever Forgive Me? and If Beale Street Could Talk
2019: The Two Popes
2020: One Night in Miami and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom
Calvin & Aidan: Definitely agree that Foxcatcher just barely missed out in 2014, especially since Bennett Miller got in Best Director.
You guys think Another Round would’ve gotten in last year if was a definite ten? Drive My Cars’ noms this year had me thinking if Another Round had enough juice to squeeze in, or if it would’ve gotten beaten out by Borat/Ma Rainey/Miami anyway.
Calvin: Also thought the same regarding First Man. Would’ve made that lineup at least a bit more tolerable.
Louis: Do you think it's fair to say that it's the acting branch that holds the Academy back the most? Director, Screenplay, Picture and a lot of the other categories seem to be have become a lot more willing to recognize international excellence, and yet the sheep-like mentality seems to persist in the acting categories. It would definitely explain Simmons and Dench's nods.
Tahmeed: I don't know if I entirely agree with the sheep thing in this case, because I honestly didn't even know Simmons was in the race.
Matt: Me neither, but defaulting to a 'name' or former winner for a nothing role is such an Academy thing to do. It's the kind of thing I'd wish they did away with, because better performances were even in the films they liked (Cooper, Faist, Balfe). I also don't hate Dench, but she definitely took Negga's spot.
Louis: The 2021 Supporting Actor link on the sidebar isn't working.
I obviously wanted Negga in, but Simmons is FAR more aggravating than Dench because the latter at least, I completely see the appeal and I like her work, Simmons is just such a non-entity and doesn't even have the 'they loved the film' argument.
On that note I do like that we have absolutely no clue as to who'll take Lead Actress at this point. Cruz or Stewart is my preference.
So what rating and thoughts do you have on Derbez in CODA?
Bryan: I reckon Another Round could well have been and, with a bigger critics push like Drive My Car had, could’ve ended up with exactly the same haul - Picture, Director, Screenplay, and International Film. Maybe even Mikkelsen, who has more name recognition than Nishijima internationally and Stateside.
I will say, Drive My Car is probably one of the most inspired nods in that really, I’ve never seen a film quite like it get nominated, even English language films. Especially with a distributor like Janus. I wonder if it had a bigger distributor like Neon, whether it would’ve been able to nab even more nods - Editing would’ve made that lineup FAR more superior, for example.
Brazinterma:
8. Venom/Eddie Brock
9. Shang-chi
10. Paul
Aidan:
Yes you may.
Bryan:
2011: The Girl with The Dragon Tattoo
2012: Flight
2013: Blue Jasmine
2014: Foxcatcher & Wild
2015: Inside Out & Straight Outta Compton
2016: Captain Fantastic
2017: I, Tonya
2018: Can You Ever Forgive Me & Cold War
2019: The Two Popes
2020: Soul & Another Round
I do think the fifth spot international features would've made it into picture by the evidence we have.
Tahmeed:
Yes, they are by far the least imaginative branch. If they go off the expected path it is typically two ways, over-nominating a film that is already a contender (e.g. Rockwell in Vice), or their international nominees will only be well established, in America, nominees like Cruz and Banderas. They are capable of inspired nods, but too often we get someone like Simmons, who is there because the actors liked Ricardos and like Simmons, I doubt it is because any was THAT passionate about the actual performance.
Luke:
I know, but one of the randomly changed functions that I now have to figure out.
Robert:
Definitely a place where I was at my most diplomatic when I gave my original thoughts. I'd give him a 1.5 with really what is that mugging he is doing constantly, and just how cloying he is every step of the way. Frankly I thought he brought kind of Disney movie tone with his performance as every moment he goes for the most obvious sentiment and the most obvious humor. Every moment he plays up to the extent that he can, and just has almost no instances of genuine subtlety.
Easy choice for the winner
I really hope Smit-McPhee gets the Oscar. This is a category where the best performance is a million times better than the others. The other four are decent at best, but nothing I would ever think deserves a nomination.
