I applaud you for doing this because it's so difficult to find credible information on non-nominated craftsmen, especially from the earlier years.

Emi Grant said...

This might be the most insane out of your wins list you've made so far, Louis. Gun to my head I couldn't name you my Top 10 of any year.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Pleasantly surprised, can't imagine how much time this must have taken to compile.

Louis: If you've had enough time to let the performances settle, your ranked top 10 feature film debut performances.

Matt Mustin said...

Very nice to see this, as I'm a big lover of good production design as well. Looking over this, I take it you consider traditional hand-drawn animation eligible for this? Cause I've always been back and forth on that.

Tony Kim said...

Louis: Not to break balls, but you missed a few queries from the last post.

Jonathan asked about your thoughts on Haas in Witness as he couldn't find them.
Marcus asked, "Where would Inception rank among Nolan's films, and your updated top 10 directing moments of his?"
Anonymous wanted to know if you've finished season 1 of either Boardwalk Empire or Unforgotten.
Anonymous (not sure if it's the same one) asked for your favorite single-episode performance by each of the main cast members of Barry.

1. Haing S. Ngor - The Killing Fields
2. Jason Miller - The Exorcist
3. Claude Laydu - Diary of a Country Priest
4. Dominic Sessa - The Holdovers
5. Melanie Lynskey - Heavenly Creatures
6. Aleksei Kravchenko - Come and See
7. Alan Rickman - Die Hard
8. Richard Widmark - Kiss of Death
9. James Dean - East of Eden
10. Kate Winslet - Heavenly Creatures

Matt:

I do, but I'll say in most cases I lean towards live action, as I do think that is the greater challenge.

Tony:

With all due respect, I don't need someone to compile comments for me.

Finally caught up with "American Fiction" this morning and....it was an indie movie. Good in many respects, particularly with the acting and central family conflicts, but flawed in it's overarching execution, I would say. The commentary of how black media is percieved/consumed is legitimately interesting - if also rather broad with it's portrayal of the side characters. It's also marketed as a hilarious comedy, and I found it more amusing that funny. Basically any non-family joke or situation that landed was because of Wright's reactions, which often mirrored my own. Also, I get the purpose behind it, but I wasn't sold with how the ending wrapped up.

Acting wise, I more or less agree with everyone here. Wright is just very authentic and on point in his leading work - glad he first got nominated for this and not some throwaway supporting turn down the line. Brown is strong as always - maybe not the absolute BEST supporting actor of the year, but one of the better ones (think Dennis Hopper in "Hoosiers"). Ross, Rae and Alexander are all quite good to.

Tony Kim said...

Louis: Sorry if you were offended, just wanted to see your answers to those questions, that's all.

Incidentally, could I get your thoughts on this? https://variety.com/2024/film/news/the-holdovers-accused-plagiarism-luca-writer-1235935605/

Louis Morgan said...

Tony:

Eh sounds like awards season...having read a third of Frisco...it's FAR from the line for line plagiarism it is claiming, none of the dialogue is the same that I read. And I wonder how much structure would line up with both films and The Browning Version....as there's a lot different between the plots anyways despite some scenarios being similar, but the scenarios that are similar are hardly the most original to begin with. Now there's a bit of smoke due to that writer having met with Payne previously but the claim on the whole is a bit overblown regardless.

RatedRStar said...

Louis: the big event is soon upon us, any hopes or expectations going into the Oscars this time?

Louis Morgan said...

RatedRStar:

I'm cool with everything going to plan this time, as therefore I will love so many winners, honestly American Fiction winning adapted will be the only one I genuinely think there are far better choices at hand for, however if that's the worst win of the night, it will be a pretty good night. For example even though I unquestionably prefer Stone, Gladstone, still was great, so I will not mind the win at all. I guess the one thing in genuine question that I can wish, is I do hope Poor Things doesn't go empty handed, so honestly the two awards I'm probably will be watching most closely are costumes and PD.

RatedRStar said...

Louis: Agreed, I think Shaggy misunderstood what I was getting at in regards to spreading the wealth in terms of winners, I think that spreading the wealth is actually a good thing this year, Poor Things and Killers winning one Oscar actually is probably the right decision, Poor Things losing every Oscar would be very bizarre in hindsight considering early on it was the front runner to win numerous Oscars.

Louis Morgan said...

Leaning towards pure ensemble for Our Little Sister, though you can make an argument for Ayase as lead.

Ayase, Nagasawa, Kaho & Hirose - 4.5/4/4/4(Each do have their own personality, with Ayase being the "mom" mature one, Nagasawa being the more free spirited one, Kaho being the fun one, and Hirose being the youth. Each playing their roles with a natural honesty that fulfills the main trait very clearly but doesn't overplay it to becoming just the only trait. Each finding nuance in the moments they have in exploring more, particularly Ayase who creates the right balance in creating the sense of the emotional conviction of the story to kind of protect her sisters from her earlier heartbreak. Where all sing though is just in their interactions where they bring such a natural sincerity to their performances. You just believe them as this group of sister with natural history between the first three, and the building history with Hirose. You completely believe them as the sisters and create such an elegant intimacy that brings you right into their world in the most ideal way.)

Kiki - 3.5(Always welcome even for a few minutes where she brings a nice casual strength of the mediator aunt who obviously has been through much and just exudes the innate maturity of the character.)

Otake - 3.5(Brief bit overall but plays well this sort of distance between herself and her family, though plagued still with the history of a more traumatic connection that is naturally realized, if very briefly explored.)

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Where would you place Ayase in the Supporting Actress ranking. From 4th to 8th.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: 7th

As for the Oscars, I'm pre-emptively disappointed that my favourite BP nominee is probably going home empty handed, but otherwise I'm cool with most things going accordingly this year albeit with less excitement than usual. Perfect Days' nomination was its reward.

Luke Higham said...

I wouldn't go that far. A Serbian Film on the other hand would make him reconsider.

I'm more excited for 2018 to be honest because there's quite alot of strong TV limited series or films that I would like him to see such as The Terror or Les Misérables.

And A Very English Scandal

Luke Higham said...

This will be the first time since Birdman won that I'll be able to watch the Oscars live.

Shaggy Rogers said...

One of my suggestions for 2017 is Tatsuya Nakadai in Lear on the Shore.

Jonathan Williams said...

Louis: I'm not sure if you've given her a 4 but if not, could Eleanor Audley go up for Sleeping Beauty and Hans Conried go u0 for Peter Pan.

Jonathan Williams said...

Correction - go up for Peter Pan.

Anonymous said...

Louis what were your 20 favorite line deliveries from 2023?

RatedRStar said...

Luke: Its on ITV bizarrely, Jonathan Ross feels like a meh choice as host, I did like Alex Zane when he used to host the Oscars show.

Tony Kim said...

Louis: What was the first film to truly challenge you as a viewer? What films were the most formative in shaping your taste as a film lover?

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Who hosted after Zane because I didn't have Sky after 2015.

And I have to agree on Ross, I'll be putting him on mute, I'd rather have Claudia Winkleman back than having to listen to him talk crap about Nolan films because I remember him hating The Dark Knight.

RatedRStar said...

Luke: Zane continued to host it, until 2021 when the Oscars decided not to broadcast some of the categories, there wasn't a panel from that ceremony onwards, he still does the panel show but its not on the same show as the Oscars itself now, its a separate thing.

RatedRStar said...

Luke: Are you gonna watch it since its on ITV?

Luke Higham said...

I'm going to watch it on their online app.

RatedRStar said...

One of the reasons I am never in the comment section during the show is I record them, book Monday off work, then watch it when I wake up, making sure that my phone is off so I can't be spoiled.

I used to watch them live all the time but I was always just too tired to make it through to the end.

Tony Kim said...

Did Louis already give his prediction for Best VFX anywhere? I can't find it.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Ratings and thoughts on the cast of The Taste Of Things.

Luke Higham said...

And where would you place Binoche in the lead actress ranking.

Louis Morgan said...

Marcus:

No I did not. And is such a great debut in terms of confidence as a director in realizing each of the sequences that are a bit different. That even includes the opening which is done in a different style from the rest of the film, but absolutely brilliant as basically this creating of a mystery as we approach this relationship that beautifully sets the stage for the film. The children sequence is probably the most straightforward direction in terms of the drama as it just sort of gently introduces us to the characters with a kind of simplicity. The zoom sequence in a way is the most challenging to not make it boring, without going into obvious style I think, and Song finds the right balance particularly in the editing in giving the sequence the natural flow, that grants time to the actors but also carries us through what could be stilted to something that is rather special. Then the third sequence is where we really get wonderful work in creating such a natural balance I think in terms of romantic style and just honest emotion. Song knows how to frame a shot, how to include score, just give time to  a reaction, or present a setting (as romantic NY, is something common enough, although I've never seen it quite presented this way which is an achievement in itself.) And she makes such a natural way of knowing when to push her hand and just let the moments be the actors, and creates the right quality that feels dreamlike but also completely honest.

Tony:

My guess is Godzilla, but a tough one.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Hmmm...it's a bit rare in that I don't know if there's anything that I consider great that I truly don't want to watch again. For example, I'd probably say Leaving Las Vegas, but I'd say that's good not great. But I would not have to be forced to watch Come and See because it's great, where Zone of Interest, which I think is not great, I'm good with the one time. I guess Night and Fog is probably the closest, but again I think with documentaries that is a little different.

Jonathan Williams:

Probably not.

Louis Morgan said...

Tony:

If you mean a film that I wasn't quite sure what to make of it the first time, maybe Barton Fink.

Otherwise, Goodfellas, Seven Samurai Back to the Future, and of course Amadeus.

Louis Morgan said...

Also Randolph wins by the way.

Tim said...

and one for Miyazaki

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Magimel & Binoche - 4.5(I'll admit I had my choice between Taste of Things and Pearl Harbor, and shucks, had to go with the former, I'm really torn up about it...Anyway, these two are just wonderful in the simplicity of their performances that create such sincerity in their work, that isn't about the big moments but every little moment that has such fantastic chemistry between the two of them. You completely believe their relationship and their love in every moment of it, and every moment of it, there is such a special poignancy to it, particularly as it develops within the film. Each naturally portray the changes as they come, which aren't these extremes but rather gentle nuances that have such a real power to them, creating a real sense of how meaningful their relationship and their cooking is in a way that is truly moving.)

Louis Morgan said...

Miyazaki wins again! Great choice either way, but great choice.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Elated for Randolph and Miyazaki.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Binoche would be #17.

I didn't realize they started already. Good to hear about Randolph and especially Miyazaki winning.

Louis Morgan said...

Anatomy of a Fall takes Original.

Tim said...

never expected to hear P.I.M.P. at the Oscars ...

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Tim: I for one, love it.

Louis Morgan said...

Meh on American Fiction winning, Poor Things and Oppenheimer would've far better choices but I can live with it.

Emi Grant said...

Louis: I agree on one hand, but on the other, I preferred it to Barbie. Plus, hard to hate on a first-time director gaining better opportunities because of it.

BRAZINTERMA said...

Hello Louis and folks!
As tradition I will talk about my mega-rankings. But this year I'm going to do something different, I'm going to put links to my Letterboxd lists.

All-timer win for Production Design, phenomenal choice.

Louis Morgan said...

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSS, the most deserving win of the night.

Emi Grant said...

We're off to a great start ngl.

Luke Higham said...

Poor John :)

Tim said...

that`s 3 in a row

Luke Higham said...

3rd win of the night for Poor Things.

Tim said...

Tahmeed: well, he is invisible after all

Emi Grant said...

Delighted.

Louis Morgan said...

So happy to see Poor Things as a tech juggernaut at least. 3 great wins in a row.

Marcus said...

Things are almost going too well, great winners so far.

Louis Morgan said...

Zone of Interest wins international to no one's surprise.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Haven't seen Zone of Interest, but great on Glazer for that speech.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Great speech by Glazer.

Luke Higham said...

They had me genuinely believing that a Stunts Oscar was being introduced.

Tim said...

Robert Downey wins. News at eleven

Louis Morgan said...

Expected, nonetheless, great win.

Luke Higham said...

Godzilla wins :)

Louis Morgan said...

Louis Morgan said...

Cool, though no speech from him was a bit disappointing.

BRAZINTERMA said...

After Best Director I will leave my mega rankings for lead actress, lead actor and picture in Louis' next post.

Tim said...

Zone of Interest for sound

Luke Higham said...

Zone wins Sound.

Emi Grant said...

Actually a solid win for Zone of Interest. Don't mind that at all.

Louis Morgan said...

I mean only Maestro (aka hit play on a Bernstein recording) would've been a genuinely bad choice in that category.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Well that was phenomenal.

Emi Grant said...

That performance was class. Hope it wins Original song.

Louis Morgan said...

Both Barbie performances certainly delivered in very different ways, just like the songs.

Luke Higham said...

It's almost time. Been waiting 15 years for this moment.

Tim said...

Film bros on twitter are about to have to change their pants

Emi Grant said...

Not sure about this song choice for the In Memoriam montage.

Bryan L. said...

Um…why were the names/pictures of the deceased in the far background (during the In Memoriam)? I only made out about half of them.

Louis Morgan said...

Sadly not the first time.

Louis Morgan said...

MURPHY, I knew it was going to happen but doesn't make it any less sweet.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

YESSSSSS

Emi Grant said...

Can you hear the music, Louis?

Tim said...

part of me thought Giamatti would win, but then again i should have seen this coming

Louis Morgan said...

Now Nolan, again, knew it, no less sweet.

Luke Higham said...

Well worth the wait.

BRAZINTERMA said...

Director = https://letterboxd.com/brazinterma/list/mega-ranking-oscar-director-direcao/

Luke Higham said...

STONE!!!

Louis Morgan said...

Stone, these were nearly made for me.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

No complaints from me, all-timer wins for both Actor and Actress.

Tim said...

Just think about the biggest Oscar losers ever: The Turning Point, The Color Purple, Gangs of New York, American Hustle, The Irishman and Killers of the Flower Moon

50 % of these are by Martin Fucking Scorsese! Think about that!

Emi Grant said...

Al Pacino getting a little silly and Oppenheimer getting its crowning moment. You love to see it.

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

Louis, this is your night.

Louis Morgan said...

With Oppenheimer for Picture, 8 of my wins line up with the Academy (and Nolan in director is a 1b rather than a #2 even), that certainly is my record for at least in awhile.

Emi Grant said...

Louis: Where would this years quartet of acting winners rank up for you?

Anonymous said...

Louis this year, Calvin last year, who will it be next year...

Shaggy Rogers said...

Nice to see the reunion between Nolan and Pacino.

Emi Grant said...

All I know is it'll only be my year once Fincher gets his salmon and potato salad.

Shaggy Rogers said...

Poor Scorsese. Three films with 10 nominations and without a win.

Louis Morgan said...

Emi Grant:

Hmmm, I'd say third overall for me, at least.
