5. Javier Bardem in Being the Ricardos - Bardem wholly fails to evoke Desi Arnaz just as he fails to seem anything but awkward in bringing the film's "witty" dialogue to screen.
4. Will Smith in King Richard - Smith delivers a charming, humorous and passionate performance here, even if he might be just a little too cautious when touching upon the negative aspects of his character.
Best Scene: Words of encouragement to Venus.
3. Andrew Garfield in Tick Tick...Boom - Garfield puts every ounce of himself into this role and that energy suits the role of Jonathan Larson extremely well.
Best Scene: "Why"
2. Denzel Washington - The Tragedy of Macbeth - See Cumberbatch thoughts.
Best Scene: Is This A Dagger Which I See Before Me
1. Benedict Cumberbatch in The Power of the Dog - Good prediction Calvin, Robert and moviefilm. I love both performances. Both give amazing performances. Both match their unique challenges, are captivating to watch, and give such complex and layered turns. I can't fault either, I can only praise the brilliance of each. So even when I make my decision it won't be that I prefer one, it will be that I just settled on one.
Best Scene: Rolling a cigarette
Next: 2021 Alternate Supporting

Pulling for Faist here to take it all. Deceptively risky performance that brings something out of his character in every frame he’s in.

Calvin:
Well, Lie is my supporting win of the year (barely beating out Smit-McPhee), so I agree with you on that.
Bradley Cooper (Licorice Pizza)
Willem Dafoe (Nightmare Alley)
Alex Hassell (The Tragedy of Macbeth)
André Holland (Passing)
Masaki Okada (Drive My Car)
Jeffrey Wright (The French Dispatch)
Mike Faist & David Alvarez
Anders Danielsen Lie
Masaki Okada
Ben Affleck
Jeffrey Wright
If we’re doing ten I suppose we’ll get Cooper (and friends), Jenkins, Pacino, Leung, and Hassell
Louis & Luke: There’s a 2020 Poland release date on the IMDB page for Nine Days, though it doesn’t say if it’s a film festival or a public release.
I have a suspicion Okada could be in the top 5, given how much Louis loves that scene.
Bryan: It probably is. If it were fake they would've deleted it by now.
Louis: If it's 2020, save Duke and Wong for that year. 2020 is completely bereft of contenders.
My suggestions:
Okada (Drive My Car)
Affleck (The Last Duel)
Dafoe/Strathairn (Nightmare Alley)
Cooper and/or Penn/Waits (Licorice Pizza)
Faist/Alvarez (WSS)
Jeffrey Right (French Dispatch)
Santoro (7 Prisoners)
Dnielsen Lie (The Wort Person in The World)
Is it okay to ask an actress question here?
I've been frustrated in my attempts to see how Andra Day stacks up against the top performances on the year (I guess, because Oscar extended the film season last year for their awards, she's not popping up on many, if any, best actress lists for 2021).
Thought I'd come here and ask you, or any of your readers opinions, out of curiosity. Where does Day rate (roughly, or exactly if you have a list) among actresses in 2021?
Thanks.
Anonymous: Louis will save that until he finishes 2021. He'll post his Actress rankings on the alternate Lead results.
I'm happy that Smith got a good score at the very least. Also, I don't think there's anything wrong with having one tie per decade in each category, as Cumberbatch and Washington are both equally deserving of the win.
Louis: do you consider McDormand in Macbeth lead or supporting?
Louis: Your rating for Kaho Nakamura in Belle?
Shaggy:
Supporting.
Tahmeed:
4.5
My guess is that Denzel will win in the end.
It's not even close in my opinion. Washington was not convincing with the Shakespearean dialogue or as Macbeth overall. Cumberbatch is on a different level this year.
Anonymous: Except it is and Washington nailed it!!! This writer mentioned EVERYTHING that made Washington's performance PERFECT!!! And gave a 5 star rating. If you are coming on these, and can't even bother to read the details and nuance behind the writing, kindly don't bother and don't hate on great performances!!! As much as I love Cumberbatch, Washington would still be my choice.
