Something else I'll say...this is Affleck's first review since "Hollywoodland", and I'm still trying to wrap my head around him getting a razzie nod...in a period piece...directed by Ridley Scott...with his Good Will Hunting co-star/co-writer. Something's just not adding up.

Also, in regards to the "Elvis" trailer...I'm worried.

On a contextual note, the film doesn't seem to be glossing over Elvis' appropriation of black musicians, but I do hope it's given an accurate treatment and not "romanticized" in an especially egregious way. From a technically perspective, I'm also reticient considering Luhrmann's usual excess, and for Hanks' mannered performance which he just isn't the best at.

ruthiehenshallfan99 said...

I actually snorted when I heard Hanks speak in the trailer.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Well as someone who doesn't like Luhrmann, and thinks Hanks going for broad transformative performances isn't exactly his strength, this looks like the greatest comedy ever made. I mean treating Elvis's crotch as a super power and playing the Colonel Tom Parker as Sydney Greenstreet from the Maltese Falcon must be going for comedy gold right? I mean surely we're not supposed to take Elvis's face being made out of plastic seriously are we?

Spall - 4(Spall's performance I think is the most dynamic element of the film in terms of evoking the cold oppressiveness of the royal family, the rest of whom I think are portrayed a little too obtusely to even be believed as anything but strange mannequins. Spall though I think makes this more convincing. He does the cold sort of proper venom with great ease and makes the most out of every disregarding stare. He though does bring humanity in his scene of discussion with Diana, even if not a good humanity, though shows well the sort of comfort the man has with death and decay that treating people with any regular decency would seem odd to him. It is a proper villainous turn that I think shows how the film in some ways could've been more dynamic that it is on the whole, to me anyways.)

Jenkins - 4(I don't know, a wholly good performance on his part, and he certainly hits his marks. It is one of those good performances though that kind of just is good but never quite made the impact that seemed possible. Honestly I would've maybe rather seen Reed Birney's depiction as this seemed a minor variation of Jenkins's fuddy duddy from Olive Kitteridge with just a bit more of a flawed manner. He plays it well but again just didn't leave any lasting impression.)

Ask about LaPaglia again at the natural later point.

Anonymous:

I think you have the wrong series, however Howerton's psychopathic delivery as usual still shines through with his delivering accentuating the fixation on possums.

Louis: With Will Smith getting a solid review after so long, what would be your top 5 performances of his? And if there isn't any chance of him being upped for "The Pursuit of Happyness", who might you have casted in the role?

I'll be honest, as much as I've criticized him in other films, I do legitimately like Smith in the original "Men in Black", and "I Am Legend". His "Focus" performance isn't bad either, but that mostly involves him coasting off his charisma, admittedly - in a film that completely falls apart if you think about it for 5 seconds.

Robert MacFarlane said...

So is Hassell a 4.5?

Matt Mustin said...

I saw Nightmare Alley: A while back I said it would be hard for anything to top The Tragedy of Macbeth as my favourite film of 2021. I think this just did it. LOOOOVED everything about this film. Just like The Shape of Water I found it transfixing from beginning to end and I felt truly transported into this story and this world, aided by a masterful and career-best (and I worship A Star Is Born) performance from Bradley Cooper.

Cooper-5(Even in an astonishing year like this, he's my win. The final scene alone is maybe his greatest moment as an actor.)

Blanchett-4.5

Mara-4(Could see her going up on rewatch.)

Collette-4

Dafoe-4

Jenkins-4.5

Perlman-3.5

Strathairn-4.5

Povinelli-3

Steenburgen-4

Beaver-3.5

Nelson-3.5

I'll also wait until the first review to get a general idea of how will that ranking go considering their quality.

In the meantime, here are these two 1990s retrocasting choices I thought of:

1990s Ghost Rider directed by Victor Salva

Bruce Campbell as Johnny Blaze/Ghost Rider
Salma Hayek as Roxanne Simpson
Brad Garrett as Blackheart
James Coburn as Carter Slade
Dennis Hopper as Mephisto

1990s Cold Souls directed by Spike Jonze

Stephen Tobolowsky as himself
Mila Jovovich as Nina
Harriet Sansom Harris as Claire Tobolowsky
Jim Broadbent as Dr Flintstein

Matt Mustin said...

Ytrewq: Literally anybody other than Victor Salva, for fuck's sake.

Ytrewq Wertyq said...

Matt: Well I have enjoyed watching Jeepers Creepers which I felt had a somewhat similliar vibe at times, so there's the reason for choosing him. If not, might just well get good ol' John Carpenter

Saw House Of Gucci yesterday. I thought Gaga and Driver were amazing, but I personally thought Pacino, Irons and Leto were quite mediocre. I would even say that Leto was plain bad. But that's just me. I'll give cast ratings and an out-of-ten score later.

Mitchell:

1. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air
2. Men in Black
3. King Richard
4. I Am Legend
5. Enemy of the State

Slightly, also could probably go up for Sixth Degrees of Separation (probably the only performance where he actually truly went dark.)

8000's:

Good choices on the Unforgiven, obviously Ryan and Wayne seem primed for such roles, not sure about Richardson but maybe.

McQueen is an ideal choice, also like Dern as Figgis a lot.

Robert:

Never said I wasn't going to review him...if I find the time.

Calvin:

I haven't.

Calvin Law said...

Glad he’s up to a 4 for Men in Black.

HTT said...

I watched King Richard yesterday and had a surprisingly good time. Even though I have never been a fan of Will Smith as an actor, I thought he killed it here. For the film, I feel a quote from my Letterboxd review summarized it pretty well: "This film never lets you forget that it is a crowdpleaser, but I must say that I certainly am pleased, which means it certainly is doing something right."

8.3/10

Cast ratings:
Will Smith - 4.5/5
Aunjanue Ellis - 4/5
Saniyya Sidney - 4/5
Demi Singleton - 3.5/5
John Bernthal - 4/5

Also watched House Of Gucci yesterday. I certainly is as cheesy and overdramatic as everyone is saying it is, but it fully embraces this, resulting in a surprisingly fun experience. Cast is a mixed bag here, some being frankly amazing, others being awful.

6.4/10

Letterboxd review here:
https://letterboxd.com/htt/film/house-of-gucci/

Cast ratings:
Lady Gaga - 5/5 (one of the best of the year imo)
Adam Driver - 4.5/5
Al Pacino - 3/5
Jeremy Irons - 2.5/5
Jared Leto - 1/5 (my Letterboxd review is basically a very vulgar 2-paragraph rant on this performance, so just read that if you don't understand my rating)

Just watched Last Night In Soho. To sum it up quickly, the first half is frankly one of the most enjoyable things released in 2021 and perfectly reminds me why I love Edgar Wright's work so much. However, the second half ruins this. It might actually be the single worst piece of filmmaking I have seen from 2021. Yes, maybe even worse than Don't Look Up. It perfectly sums up everything I hate about modern horror movies. So yeah, talk about a mixed bag of a movie.

4.3/10

Letterboxd review here:

Cast ratings:
Thomasin McKenzie - 4/5 (To quote my Letterboxd review: "... one of the year's best performances of the year from Thomasin McKenzie ... Or it would be one of the best performances of the year if she didn't reduce herself to a bunch of high-piched squeals in the second half."
Anya Taylor-Joy - 4/5
Matt Smith - 3/5

Directing:

8000's:

Different work for a black and white Ford film, with the rather noirish qualities that are in there at times, while also creating distance with a more narrow perspective that creates the grandeur through a greater isolation. The lighting emphasizing greys and the sort of roughness of the setting at times.

Call Northside 777 is straight forward but effective work. Black and white really prestige at the time, well framed and composed though in terms of making dynamic shots out of a lot of scenes of people just talking to one another.
