RIP Gene Hackman

Not my favorite news to wake up to. RIP to one of the all time greats who in terms of perception was perhaps "burdened" by the way he made it look all too easy. Hackman could be absolutely hilarious in different ways in The Royal Tenenbaums, The Birdcage, Superman and of course the blind man who was going to make espresso in Young Frankenstein, but equally powerful was his dramatic range from his absolutely dominating performances in films like Unforgiven, The French Connection, the underrated Scarecrow, but he could dominate the screen through subdued power in I Never Sang For My Father and of course his all time work in The Conversation. Hackman even could make the cash grab sequel a work of art, where most actors might've phoned in a reprise in a lesser sequel, Hackman took French Connection II as an opportunity to give it his all offering one of the most penetrating depictions of drug withdrawal you'll see in any film. But that was the nature of Hackman, unfussy and straight to the point, yet within that there was so much range and talent, where he was always consistent in that you knew you'd get at base level a good performance from Hackman, potentially a great one, and at the very least the film would improve thanks to having Hackman show up for a minute or if was leading the whole damn thing. Hackman chose to end his career relatively early for an actor, but in a way, it represented his style of acting to begin with. Where Hackman had said what he needed to as a performer, had given us so much of his time in terms of dynamic, fascinating and potent depictions onscreen, and for every second of it he made cinema that much brighter. One of my favorite behind the scenes stories comes from Morgan Freeman where he described the scene where his Ned is getting tortured by Hackman's Little Bill in Unforgiven, and how the moment where Hackman went to his deeply intense yet quiet threat about lies, that his expression of petrified fear was genuine by just how Hackman could turn it on like few others and make you simply believe it.

Louis: A great tribute. Is his turn in The Quick And The Dead a definite write-up.

RIP Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa, incredibly tragic.

Brilliant tribute indeed. A textbook definition of a great actor. A perfect actor for my money. Unfussy and marvelous. Can't think of a performance from him, that I didn't enjoy, or found distracting.

One of the greatest to ever set foot in front of the screen. I always said you could keep your De Niros and Pacinos and Hoffmans; give me Mean Gene any day of the week. I considered him the greatest of that generation, perhaps the greatest of all time before Daniel Day-Lewis stepped up to the plate, and even though it had been two decades since Hackman had graced us with his cinematic presence, it was an absence sorely felt.

Godspeed, Gene. May your tombstone be as impressive as Royal Tenenbaum's.

Rest in Peace, Mr Hackman. An absolute legend. Arguably the biggest range ever.

RIP to one of the GOAT's.

No offense, but Mean Gene is far better than Day Lewis as well tbh. I watched In The Name Of The Father and The Crucible recently, I think Day Lewis is godawful in both of them, and I am genuinely NOT a fan of a lot of his Pre Gangs Of New York output. I think De Niro and Pacino are far better than Day Lewis as well.

Anonymous: Art may be subjective, and you're entitled to your opinion, but it's possible to celebrate Hackman without putting down anyone else.

R.I.P. Gene Hackman. Nice tribute, Louis.

Okay.... Updates show this is more suspicious than Carbon monoxide poisoning which was originally suspected. Pills scattered at the place, and Hackman and Arakawa might have been dead for more than a day before they were discovered. Front gate opened too. Man, wtf???

RIP Gene Hackman
Ever since he retired I've always believed he might come back just to do something more worthy than Welcome to Mooseport. I really wish that rumor of him doing voice over for The Wolf of Wall Street was true.

I think the film I always go back to often is I Never Sang for My Father, I remember having never seen it before back when the blog didn't exist and just being floored by it being such a warm and different role for Gene Hackman.
