A Few Notes:
- Yes a few nominee listings have not been updated.
- There are changed winners from taking more time and making a deeper dive with certain years. Though given the nature of the category I'm sure I missed a few.
- And yes some are film unseen and only going by the quality of the song, though song usage does take at least a little consideration in certain rankings.
Lucas:
All those would be in the "And" category.
Omar:
Stangenberg would've been my winner in supporting.
Also really looking forward to Mickey 17 and Blue Moon based on your recommendation. I will say hearing of Hawke as Hart and Scott as Rodgers already increased my curiosity.
J96:
I don't wish to do the previous decade of performers, but I may do the picture ranking eventually.
Additional Note: I'm aware some of the Beatles songs are either solo Lennon or McCartney but I went by the credit that the academy likely would've gone by.
Was waiting for this list, thank you Louis.
Louis: Pleasantly surprised by a lot of love for Indian songs on your nominee list, would have never thought you'd give A.R. Rahman 4 nods knowing your dislike of his most popular work in the States.
Three questions:
1) Your thoughts on 'Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai'.
2) Was 'Senorita' eligible from Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara, or is that a strong year for the category.
3) Would you mind giving your provisional ranking of the category in other years, ie 2007?
Louis: Very pleased with Hearts on Fire winning 85. I'm also surprised Into The West didn't make your 03 top 5.

Also, don't know if it was always your choice for 2010, but love seing 'I See the Light' be your win, South Park monopolizing all 5 slots for 99, and the inclusion of 'Brave Sir Robin' from Monty Python.
Awesome list. Pleasantly surprised by the greatest song of all time, Hearts on Fire, taking 1985. Though, I'm admittedly also disappointed it didn't get the win for every other year.
Still awesome list. Love the inclusion of many personal favs like None of Them Are You, The Ballad of High Noon, and SP reigning supreme in '99.
Louis: How tempted would you be for a recommendation you would probably not really like but that has a soundtrack that is a must?
Louis, your thoughts on these songs?
All I Want Is You
All Is Love
Ramona
No mention of Into the West for 2003?
Quick Note: I must've accidentally deleted Into the West when cutting down my long list, always meant for it to be the runner-up.
Louis: Did you seek out any other Jason Isbell songs after Maybe It's Time? Cause I did, and he's one of my favourites now.
Louis: Ratings and thoughts on the cast of Il Marchese Del Grillo.
Louis: I assume Flying Dreams or Eye Of The Tiger will win 82 but is Walking In The Air a strong possibility of making your top 5.
Louis: The only update I can recall was I Stand Alone from Quest For Camelot at #5 for 98.
Emi: don't know what you mean. The greatest song of all time is No Easy Way Out and it's in #4
I LOVE that you nominated “Feed the Birds” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. The former was Walt Disney’s favorite song. LOVE the 1998 nominees. LOVE those underrated songs from Django Unchained. It looks like “O Saya” was the only aspect of “Slumdog Millionaire” that you liked. I’ll be back with questions.
Louis: What are your thoughts on a 1930's movie adaptation of At Earth's Core with Cooper and Schoedsack directing?
Also, give me a good title for that black comedy mystery thriller directed and written by Billy Wilder with Powell and Loy.
Louis: What are your 15 favourite songs that didn't win the award.
Great stuff, glad you liked In the City from The Warriors, such a memorable ending song.
Louis: Wow you have been busy, first the tribute and now this, pour yourself a bourbon =D, actually gives me a bunch a songs to listen to as well.
1967 I will be very interested in especially as I think Talk to the Animals is one of the worst ever winners, especially when Bare Necessities, You Only Live Twice and the best thing about Casino Royale (The Look of Love) would have been better choices.
Louis: Scrolls down list.....sees 1965.... ohhh thats an interesting choice, out of the two Tom Jones choices you went for What's New Pussycat over Thunderball.
RatedRStar: I will say one good thing about Talk to the Animals - it later paved a way for a great scene and a hilarious rendition of the song by Chief Wiggum on The Simpsons.
No one tell Phil Collin’s about the 1999 lineup
Louis: your thoughts on these scenes from I’m Still Here
The arrest of Rubens
The traffic accident
Eunice at the ice cream parlor
Leaving the house
Super 8 montage of photos before final time jump
Michael: I've been waiting for this moment all my life.
Ytrewq Wertyq: I can't deny that.
Hello Louis and folks
I think it's time to talk about our final bets on who will win tomorrow's Oscars. Just one note: I'm not going to talk about the short and documentary categories. Okay, let's get started.
SONG: "El Mal" - Emília Perez

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY: A Real Pain
SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Zoe Saldaña
SUPPORTING ACTOR: Kieran Culkin
ACTRESS: Fernanda Torres
ACTOR: Adrien Brody
DIRECTOR: Brady Corbet
PICTURE: I'm Still Here
PS: I know it's an exaggeration to put Still Here in the most unlikely victories. But screw it, because life is too short. I'm going to keep thinking that Still Here will have the same luck as CODA or Marty on Sunday until they open the envelopes.
The appearance of two songs on this list being sung by Ilene Woods warms my heart.
i will also exclude the Short and Doc categories, and this time Song too. I still hope that Emilia Perez is gonna lose every category (and there is a chance for that now) but idon't know what else to predict. If Diane Warren were to win, that would mean she could stop getting nominated already, but they might also give it to Sing Sing so that that film doesn't go empty-handed. I dunno

Louis: I just skimmed through the comments on all the recent posts and realized:
I don't think you have given you're thoughts on the Direction of The Substance and A Complete Unknown yet? You were asked about Anora and Brutalist in between, but not those two
Tim: They're on the Best Supporting Actor 2024 page.
oh yes, my bad. thanks.
i got to the part where he said he'd do them later and thought the comments were done.
Just wasted 20 minutes i guess :)
Louis: Have you been watching this current season of Severance?
Robert: I saw him comment on it under Zovatto's review.
Thinking about Hackman a lot. Seeing him go from "I Never Sang For My Father" to "French Connection" to "The Conversation" to "Superman" is CRAZY!!! What a dynamite and diverse body of work already, and yet after all this, he never stopped showcasing his colossal range. When I first watched "The Conversation", I was astounded that that was Hackman. Of course Hackman was a great actor, but that character was a COMPLETE 180 to the characters I was familiar with when it came to Hackman, and yet he nailed that performance with so much nuance and conviction. Utterly spellbinding actor. RIP.
Tahmeed:
Tujh Mein Rab Dikhta Hai I think has a particularly potent blend between the instrumentation and the vocals. Each very playing off of each other in the use and amplification, where moments where the voices are dominant but also support the flute for example. And each kind of bouncing off each other and supplemented by the consistent syncopation, with the remarkable slides into a certain more vibrant accentuation of the voices. With a notable build in the inclusion of strings then the female choir, each building on each other rather nicely to make for me a remarkable song.
Senorita would probably be in the top ten.
I’d rather wait for that for the time being only because with this list I wanted to also look for any obscure entries, something I’m going to try to do going forward with the song rankings per year.
Emi Grant:
I mean I’ll always take a good soundtrack.
Harris:
Kind of the love ballad in the U2 style that works entirely for me, with simple but effective straightforward lyrics of the ilk that aren’t reinventing the wheel but certainly work in that directness. What I take more of the song though is the music side of things where there is a lot going on with the riffs, the merging of somewhat dissonant sounds, though overarching just in the rock style that ends up working and playing off each other in a building, almost playful style that is rather winning here.
All is Love is just a fun song that is weird in its style that is kind of a kid’s song with the voices and the whistling, the relatively simple if not repetitive lyrics and such, but put into kind of an Indie rock blender with the instrumentation that makes it a curious bit that is perfectly fitting for the style of the specific style of the film.
I say this a compliment that Ramona sounds like it is setup to be a love song for Wes Anderson with the specific flavor of kind of a grandiose flavor in terms of the mixing of the instrumentation with the dramatic, but very intimate in the quietness of Beck’s vocals throughout that have this meekness about it, that brings you into kind of a core of the song of the repeated lament essentially of saying Ramona’s name, which Beck rather artfully finds several unique ways to musically pronounce it without getting old.
Matt:
I have not but I will now.
8000’s:
Well given the plot has a lot in common with their biggest success with Kong I suppose I could see it.
Jinx? (Maybe make it a plot point that they meet when saying the same peculiar name at the same time)
Luke:
I settled against it due to the strength of the usage of Plagues as well.
Sordi - 4.5(Sordi plays two parts each kind of giving him a chance to play two different types of a comedic wavelength to play with. One being the bastard prankster which Sordi very much plays with a combination of a charisma and a distinct lack of any discernible shame whatsoever. Although I wouldn’t quite say he gets past the point where I truly enjoyed spending time with his character, Sordi certainly made that time more tolerable due to his expected ease in his comedic timing and his particular glint of mischievousness that has more than a bit of sinister villainous to it, despite never playing it as a direct villain. Rather Sordi presents him as a man gaming in the system in a world he knows he plays with as he sees fit. As the poor man, Sordi takes a broader approach though it too works in just playing the extreme confusion of his character that is both funny and intensely sorrowful as the man being played with just for the sake of it. Although the secondary role is much more limited than you might think as it is more of a bit among bits for the aristocrat than a completely separate role so to speak. Still Sordi makes much of what he has within that role as to be expected.)
The rest of the cast I thought was fine but this was Sordi’s show.
RatedRStar:
To be honest, I have been working on this list since the last Oscars.
Anonymous:
The arrest scene is so great because Salles keeps his hand light in the scene, not forcing the hand to make sure the audience knows something bad will happen, in fact by showing Rubens slowly dressing like he’s just going to a meeting almost tricks you to think it might be more routine, then slowly building the dread by just keeping us stuck and claustrophobic in the house, not telling us something bad is happening but making become more and more uneasy by just the presence of the strange men who are distant but not overly nefarious.
The traffic accident is just absolutely heartbreaking in every sense and Torres is just outstanding in every second of it as basically unleashing the anger after holding it in mixed with so much grief and despair at the same time. Salles also carefully shows the heartbreaking impact on all the kids and the blunt cruelty of the moment is so important. But again I love that Salles very much let’s Torres take the wheel in the scene, knowing she will sell, and boy does she, makes it all feel absolutely real and in turn absolutely painful.
The ice cream parlor is quietly heartbreaking because it is able to show basically the attempt at normalcy and we see the layers between the family attempting that, along with the sense of what is obviously so painfully missing every second throughout the scene, showing the struggle between living and living with their loss.
Leaving the house is just outstanding because what Salles has done, and what Torres has done throughout is create the sense of life so distinctly that we feel the intimacy of the walls throughout most of the film. So when we see the house now cleared out, mostly dark, and lifeless, except a very quiet Torres looking over what she is leaving behind it is absolutely heartbreaking in the simple truth of the moment, and Salles makes you feel this penetrating acceptance and the feelings of having to move on, though still living with the grief.
The final scene is just amazing work in editing, cinematography, direction and Torres’s performance, and I can see why many wanted to it hear, because the combination of these elements where we see the nostalgia, the love as we too have felt that loss and to see Rubens back on the screen, even in “old” footage, reflected in Torres’s performance is absolutely devastating as the real loss of it is all is thrust right into you mercilessly in the best possible way.
Robert:
Yes but haven’t watched the most recent episode just yet.
Louis: I'd recommend the album Southeastern in particular, it's probably the closest in style to that song.
Also finished Boardwalk Empire season 3, which I thought was Amazing (slightly dull Margaret story aside), particularly the build up toward the climax with the last two episodes being absolutely stellar in particular. But overall loved the expansion of the characters, the continuation of so many of the stories and the perhaps increase of the historical notes impacting the rest of the story.

1998: “Reflection” from “Mulan”, “The Prayer” “Through Your Eyes” from Quest for Camelot

Louis: Similar to Matt's question, are there any artists whose work you delved deeper into, and perhaps became a fan of, as a result of listening to their original songs?
Oh, and by the by, have you settled on your Oscar predictions?

It sure will be sad to see Gene in the Memoriam.
Louis, were 2016’s “Moonshine” - They Live By Night, songs from Lalaland or Moana in the top 10?
1967: “My Own Home”, “I Wanna Be like You” and “Bear Necesities” - Jungle Book, “The Look of Love” is MY winner though.
Louis: Your thoughts on "Kokomo", "Tomorrow Never Dies" and "Sparkle".
Anonymous: I have to say I was a bit shocked at Kokomo being his winner for 1988. That might be the most against-the-grain pick here.
I hope Nosferatu gets something.
Matt:
I'll keep that in mind.
J96:
Reflection and The Prayer would be in the top ten.
Willow's Song would probably be #6.
We'll get to 89 and 04 when we get to those years.
Friends on the Other Side would be in the top ten.
Happy just missed the cut.
Visions of Gideon just missed the cut.
Suspirium and I'll Always Remember Us This Way just missed the cut.
Collide would be in a top 10.
I actively dislike the songs from Del Toro's Pinocchio.
Anonymous:
Kokomo I know is much hated by some (though I think for some it is just a general disdain for Mike Love), which I don't care, it is insanely catchy for a reason, and for me the reason is because it works as a song. The lyrics are pseudo nonsense right down to the title, but totally work in terms of just selling the overall theme of the song of basically "here's the ultimate vacation" spot, where the lyrics completely vibe with the rhythm to be the breeziest of the breezy songs in every choice, which for me all work specifically as oldest school Beach Boys (which also breeziest of the breezy) though as a hit well past their "cool" date.
I previously gave thoughts on the other two.
J96:
If you mean other songs from La La Land and Moana are in the top ten, they are, specifically "How Far I'll Go" and "Someone in the Crowd".
Tony:
Can't think of any immediate examples that come to mind.
Louis, how do you rank the best song nominees of the 2020’s so far?
Luke, your thoughts on John Cena's heel turn
Anonymous: 3 words, ABOUT FUCKING TIME.
Louis: Ratings and thoughts on the cast of Slow Dancing in The Big City.
I am glad someone talked about Cena's heel turn here... Some people are saying that it's a little too late, but fuck it!!! It was GLORIOUS!
Luke: Wrestlemania is now looking interesting because it had not been built up well until this point.
Perfectionist: I'm happy to see it, a part of me wished it happened during his peak years.
Louis: What are your thoughts on Gascón's second scene with Paz and the scene where Saldaña meets Gascón again in Emilia Pérez?
Oscars tonight look so dire we're talking abt Wrestlemania in here, lmao.
J96:
1. "Naatu Naatu" - RRR
2. "I'm Just Ken" - Barbie

25. "El Mal" - Emilia Perez
Luke:
Sorvino - 3.5(He might oversell a bit but I did appreciate his presence and enthusiasm. As there are moments where he does find a quiet earnest sincerity in his work particularly in the scenes of the direct romance where he does bring a real sweetness in showing his chemistry with Ditchburn. Which she can’t quite rectify on her side entirely, but Sorvino is consistently trying here and seems game for a much better film than he is in.)
Ditchburn - 2.5(You know as “one timer” leads go she’s no horrendous. She is trying, and while there’s a certain stiffness at times, I would say she’s fully stilted though. With maybe better direction and a script someone could’ve pulled a bit more out of her than what we get.)
Everyone else is forgettable more than anything.
Lucas:
My inclusion of both scenes is not praise but having to choose something for the cast, though Paz is innocent performance wise, where the scene with Gascon there is at least some semblance of chemistry though the relationship as a whole is severely underdeveloped still, but they seem remotely like humans in the scene rather than melodramatic ridiculousness. The same is the case of the Saldana scene where at least her portrayal of surprise is okay acting from her and the reintroduction though still has an awkwardness of how it is written. Again these exist on very low bars to begin with and would be kind of underwhelming moments even an okay film.
Emi Grant : The last two Oscar ceremonies were actually decent I thought, I think its because theres like only a few categories where there is potential for surprises.
Louis, have you decided on your final Oscar predictions?
Hey Louis and everyone
Quick question: who do you think will be the presenters for the best director and picture categories? My guesses are Ben Stiller and Oprah Winfrey respectively.
Tony & Shaggy:
I'm typically not superstitious, but I don't like make predictions on the night itself, just prefer to see them play out. Particularly given this year a few categories could go with either a great choice or a horrible choice.
I half-assed some predictions, here they go:

Best Sup Actor: Culkin

Best Animated Short: Wander to Wonder
Best Live Action Short: A Lien
Best Sound: Dune pt 2
Best Visual Effects: Better Man
I thought Stark was gonna present it to Gamora!
Kieran Culkin wins of course
They’re gonna break the three year streak of supporting actor winners starring in the BP winner.
That was quick. No clips.
Love this moment between Andrew and Goldie.
Flow for the win. It’s nice that the Academy is finally breaking away from the Disney/Pixar default win.
LETS FUCKING GOOOOOOO
Yeah even though Flow wasn't my #1, it's easy to appreciate a win for something outside a big studio in a category dominated by only a few.
that is one of the messiest and cutest speeches in a while
I really dislike Culkin's performance, and the fact that he won for this mediocre reiteration of his performance in Succession, for which he already won last year. Superfluous af!
so far I'm 4/4
Same, I think
Hope it's not the last win for Anora tonight
ANORA! I guessed it at the last minute. Alright. Picture Win!
lol
Such deep words, Zoe.
I might be higher on Conclave than anyone here, so I'll take it.
A: I'll take anything that's not Emilia Perez tonight.
Emi: Amen to that.
If The Substance wins nothing tonight, Mikey’s got it. Unless I’m Still Here pulls a surprise win in International Feature.
I don’t think Conclave will win BP without a Director nod.
A win for The Substance. Demi’s back.
Ehhhhh. A Different Man had just as amazing make-up without ever forcing you to ackowledge it's gross or calling attention upon itself.
but that's all The Sustance hating I'm doing tonight.
Extremely deserved win for The Substance, though A Different Man would've also been extremely deserved.
the montage was cool, but why these three songs specifically?
Thoughts on the Bond tribute?
It was well done, but baffling inclusion for this particular ceremony.
ok, this might in fact become Sean's night
Anora is going to win, big time
Baker again cool.
Ooh, Anora for editing? Nice!
Another win for Anora and loss for the Brutalist. Guess Anora will be winning BP.
Anora might sweep
I think Madison might take this now.
The James Bond mash-up was well-done, but I guess it’s too much to ask for a quicker show.
FFFFFFFFFuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuucccckkkkkkk.
No justice for The Color Purple
Ahh the year of the four leading wins, although thanks to the sweep I've already come to terms with this bad win.
Camille, the singer who sang the beloved “Le Festin” from “Ratatouille”
Maybe the worst Original Song winner, although I'll leave that to Louis to confirm.
What are you referring to?
It is, woof.
J96: I was still holding up hopes that the controversies might have led to Emilia Perez loosing all its nominations. With 13, that would be the record. As is, that record still stands with The Turning Point and The Color Purple. I have never seen the former, but i really enjoy the latter and it does not deserve to be the biggest loser ever
Let's face it, that was a horrible win, but an expected one. Like getting your wisdom teeth removed. You dread that moment, then it comes, and then you are glad it is done.
So, so happy for No Other Land.
Yay! A win for Dune Part 2. And they played that BEAUTIFUL SCORE.
Uh Oh. Snow White cast……
Nice to see Dune: Part Two getting some love.
Dune taking both VFX and Sound is great.
Paul Atreides congratulating the VFX winners.
that was beautiful.
They ruined so many In Memoriams in recent years that it's amazing to see one done right for once
Well done Memoriam.
Well said Mr. Freeman.
Slightly confused by the music choice for the Memoriam, but it was lovely to see Freeman pay his tributes to Hackman before it.
Gamora, Drax and the Green Goblin on stage.
Win for The Brutalist.
Very deserved choice for cinematography. Although really there was only truly one absolutely wrong choice possible there.
I'M STILL HERE WINS
LET'S GOOO
Brazinterma is bringing out the champagne tonight
Light always wins over darkness.
I’M STILL HERE!!!!!!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
and so is Louis, lol.
Well when we go from the worst win the category to one of the best, its the time to celebrate.
Oh fucking yeah, Emi!
CHUPA JACQUES AUDIARD!!!!!!!!
And Brutalist takes score.
Inner peace.
Love that score win.
The Brutalist for Score! That momentum is coming back……
I remember that beautiful moment when Quincy Jones presented score to Ennio Morricone. Unbelievable that they are both gone.
Wicked vs The Wiz!
Cillian! LOVE THE OPPENHEIMER SCORE!
A Complete Unknown hasn’t won anything so Adrian will get it.
FUCK YEAH!!!
He didn't kiss Cillian, though. Coward.
Brody wins keeping my likely brief streak of my favorite being the winner in this category.
Adrian is now the 10th Actor to win Lead TWICE!
if Anora now wins Best Picture (which it most likely will), Sean will be the first person to win 4 Oscars in one night
THEY’RE SO HAPPY FOR SEAN!
I love Brody, but man that speech took forever and a half.
Glad to see Baker win Director.
Even with the bad song and Supporting Actress wins, overall turning into a strong set of winners.
Louis, just curious, how quickly do you update your nominee reviews from “nominated” to “won”? Are you at your keyboard, updating immediately after the name is called?
J96:
No. I just do it soon afterwards.
I predict Demi for a split.
Dang! Congrats Mikey!
I'M LEVITATING RN
This was Anora domination. Shame the critics couldn't have given Borisov some momentum to dethrone Culkin but alas.
Brilliant, brilliant win.
First time someone younger than me has won Best Actress.
A (almost) sweep for Anora. That does make it up for the show running too long.
Harry and Sally.
@MacieWait, are we in different time zones? Did The Brutalist win?
this actually turned out to be a pretty great night all things considered
TONIGHT THIS COULD BE THE GREATEST NIGHT OF OUR LIVES!!!
ANORA!
Yeah, I was expecting much worse. LOVE at least half of the winners.
Four wins for Baker, stunning.
Condolences to anyone who was watching on Hulu.
At one point, the chances were 1. Anora, 2. The Brutalist, 3. Conclave. ABC!
Goodnight.
