Luke: Can I ask what makes you think that Butler is going to be 5th??? Cause I can actually see him ranked above Fraser tbh. I might change my predictions after a bit more surety.

Perfectionist: Let's wait and see. Louis tends to keep his thoughts very close to the chest so it could go either way plus he's given 5 ratings to performances in bad movies before.

Luke Higham said...

And if Fraser does get a five, he'll be in the lower tier.

I'll switch it up a little...

1) Nighy
2) Farrell
3) Mescal
4) Fraser
5) Butler

I haven't seen Living yet, but I could imagine Nighy taking the win if Louis was really moved by his work. Fraser and Butler are a tough pair. The Whale has some really cringe scenes and I'm not sure if Fraser's work rose above all of them (I thought he was great overall). Elvis is a truly horrid film, I just can't see Butler getting a 5.

I'm most torn on Butler and Fraser, as well. I have no complete reference for either performance, so going from what I have seen of each may skew my decision.

Calvin Law said...

I'll go with how I rank them personally and see if Louis concurs.

1. Farell
2. Nighy
3. Mescal
4. Butler
5. Fraser

Still can't believe Mescal is in this lineup, what an inspired nom.

Though having said that, with a rewatch of Living I could easily see Nighy placing first for me, him and Farrell are basically on an even keel for me now.

Louis: for the request I just won for Supporting Actor 2022, I'd like to request Christopher Abbott in On the Count of Three for this year's alternate lead lineup *unless* that's not allowed, in which case I'll give some more thought.

Luke Higham said...

As much as I would support an Abbott review, especially now over Calva, I think Dec 31st or Pre-Nominations should be the deadline.

Louis: I'll use one of my requests for Yuchang Peng in An Elephant Sitting Still (If you haven't seen it).

Calvin Law said...

Luke: Perfectly understandable, I agree with this too out of principle of fairness.

In which case I will use my request on Aldis Hodge for Alternate Supporting Actor 2019.

Michael McCarthy said...

Calvin: For what it’s worth, I bet Abbott gets a review anyway. He’d make my alternate lineup assuming there’s ten.

Mitchell Murray said...

Be the way, haven't seen "Aftersun" yet, but I just learned Paul Mescal is only 2 years older than me. Definitely one of the younger best actor nominees comparatively, so good for him.

Michael: I think he will, too, in a lineup of 10, which thinking about it will probably be the case.

Paul Mescal being two months younger than Timothee Chalamet is very funny to me.

To those of us predicting Fraser in fourth or fifth, do we think Louis gives him a 4 or a 4.5?

Tahmeed Chowdhury said...

It is pretty insane how Mescal played both a high schooler and a father of an 11 year old convincingly in the span of just two years.

Louis: Did you start Normal People by any chance?

Anonymous said...

Calvin: Mescal is undoubtedly the actor with the weightier talent though, despite the minuscule age difference and the fact that Chalamet burst onto the scene a little earlier. It does feel that Mescal has gotten here through mostly hard work without the many cloying fangirls behind his back (that he’s only very recently started to gain due to his relationship with a certain singer) that Chalamet had.

With that being said, retro film roles for the five lead actors in this category, Louis?

Mitchell Murray said...

Anonymous: I mean, his film debut was just last year with "The Lost Daughter". He hasn't had nearly the same amount of time/exposure as Chalamet, so it's a little soon to speculate on how his career/acting range will compare.

Though as a side thing, and this is coming from a hetero dude...I'll admit, he's not a bad looking lad.

Anonymous said...

Mitchell: Indeed, and this is coming from a very sporty dude, that he played a competitive sport as rough and tough and macho as Gaelic Football (which is a blend of soccer/football and rugby union) only to shift to a more emotionally attuned career choice in acting is ironic but makes sense , and elevates him in my personal estimations.

Louis: I know you've already answered my question on which films you thought had a good script but bad direction, but what are some films you thought had an interesting premise, but failed due to problems with the script itself?

Tahmeed:

I've seen a few episodes.

Let me try to get to those on the next post.
