5. Paul Newman in The Sting - Newman gives perhaps his most strictly entertaining performance. Having a proper blast in the role, while certainly carrying the proper warmth as the mentor type.
Best Scene: Poker Game.
4. James Woods in Killer: A Journal of Murder - Although his film is severely misguided about his character, Woods fully understands him in his disturbing portrayal of depravity.
Best Scene: After the murder.
3. James Mason in Odd Man Out - Mason has
limited screentime, however doesn't waste a moment in a heartbreaking
portrait of a man coming to terms mentally while he decays physically.
Best Scene: Psalm.
2. Bob Hoskins in Felicia's Journey - Hoskins delivers an absolutely fascinating depiction of a most unusual kind of psychosis.
Best Scene: Final scene with Felicia.
1. Carl Anderson in Jesus Christ Superstar -
Anderson delivers one incredible musical performance after another, but
also delivers as striking of a silent turn.
Best Scene: "Last Supper"
Next: An extended waiting game (maybe a review or two if I find the motivation).

«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 275 of 275I just have a sinking feeling now Delroy Lindo’s gonna get snubbed across the board. That’s...really depressing.
Jesus, that score category is... underwhelming
Again, I'll wait for the SAG noms before getting into a panic.
Glenn close I'm done. If she wins it will be worse than bohemian rhapsody winning best drama.
Tim: I do love their older stuff though like A Beauitful Lie.
Lol what the fuck is going on xD
I mean, did we expect any better from the Golden Globe? I'm glad for Fennel and PYM love, and I imagine Zengel is probably vey happy; not that common for a foreign child actress to get recognized in these awards
i do too
Anonymous: I didn't get my hopes up at all because I expect this to happen every year. The Leto nomination was hilarious though.
Leto getting in over Raci is how I become the Joker
At least Promising Young Woman just went from “it would be nice if it happened” to “holy shit it might actually happen”.
Glenn is soo going to win the Oscars. Worst supporting performance of the decade, yes, but now we have a clear winner (and it was never going to be Seyfried)
Heck, given the unpredictability of sup. actor right now, Burnham might even make it.
I don’t care about anything besides Youn getting snubbed now but PYW getting so much love is cool.
Fuck them nevertheless.
Louis: Thoughts on the Globe nominations.
It really puts the two most awarded lead actresses of the season so far face to face, since both Nomadland and Promising Young Woman got all the key categories (writing, directing and picture). I can see they going for McDormand, but, now, I do think Mulligan is the one to beat there. Kirby is the only nomination for her film (the Burstyn snub I did find surprising), Ma Rainey's only got its leads and Day has also a song nomination, but that's it - she does seem like the Erivo of this year, btw.
If Mulligan doesn't win here, then it's done - but if she does, the BAFTA seems on the bag, and, with these two, even if she doesn't get SAG and/or Critics Choice, she can make her way to the Oscar like Colman, Cotillard and Kidman did. I can see the same path for Kirby, though - if she wins the globe, it'll definetly be a sign of strength for her.
SAG and BAFTA matter much more than the Globes in my opinion.
I can't believe they had a choice to diversify in every lineup and they did in every one except supporting actress where they decided to go with all white actresses again. Okay, is this harsh on them? Yes. Am I being overly vitriolic? Maybe. But Foster is a weak choice at best, and Glenn Close gave one of the worst performances of the year. Youn should NOT be snubbed from this lineup.
I don't know if I can watch Judas tonight with the proper mindset. I'm so upset.
Mitchell: I think everybody has that mindset where they want every Awards organization to play their part in awarding the right people as it gives them momentum. The HFPA more often than not let themselves down most years.
So about the Golden Globes nominees... I'm mostly content with most nominations, the love for Promising Young Woman is GREAT. Maybe Mank and TTOTC7 got one more nod than they needed to, but it could have been worse.
Da 5 Bloods got snubbed hard, which I don't mind aside from Lindo missing, which is stupid. I'll keep from further comments on 2021 films getting nominated for now, though.
That said, Glenn Close getting nominated is legitimately embarrassing. I'm not even that passionate about Rici, but seeing Leto in there and not him doesn't feel right.
I'll never forget the 2010 Musical/Comedy debacle where they nominated Alice In Wonderland and Burlesque.
Mitchell: Look, 2020 was bad, but its no excuse to nominate anything from Hilbilly Elegy.
Michell: I didn't ask for your opinion, no offence.
Like it's fair to say you don't care about them, but I don't understand why you feel it necessary to interject with that. It means little to you but it means a lot to me. And also, screw Hillbilly Elegy.
Anyway I'm gonna take a break from posting stuff cause I'm just going to lose my temper and get sucked into that tunnel vision Louis warns against. But my above point stands.
Well SAG is tomorrow so, I reckon the SAG nominees will be a bit more predictable than the Globes who usually throw weird curveballs on occasion.
Mitchell: You might want to watch Hilbilly Elegy (well, don't actually) to see it for yourself. It's rough, man.
I'm sure Calvin doesn't mean any ill will, but holy hell, this blog all of a sudden feels like the dinning table after my parents got into a screaming match, lmao.
Yeah Marriage Story all over again. Anyway, into Judas and the Black Messiah now.
Happy to see so much love for Promising Young Woman.
Jesus, what happened here?
Question and pardon my possible ignorance, but for the Golden Globes do the actors in “International films” qualify for the acting categories? Because I know they don’t qualify in the best picture race and so I just assumed that was true for the other categories and that’s why Youn was snubbed.
The Globes have always been full of shit.
Is it me or did they announce the nominations in reverse just to fuck with us.
Luke, that was abit odd announcing the big categories first.
My views on the GG list ...
- SNUBBED: Delroy Lindo, Sophia Loren, Cristin Milioti, Youn Yuh-jung and Leslie Odom, Jr. in comedy / musical (far superior than Lin-Manuel Miranda).
- DECEPTIONS: Jared Leto, Kate Hudson and James Corden.
- SURPRISES: song "Tigress & Tweed", Jodie Foster, Tahar Rahim, Andra Day, Emerald Fennell for director and Music? (which film is this one I never heard).
Brazinterma: As great as lin manuel miranda was I am surprised he got the nomination over Leslie Odom junior. But at least he was better than james Corden.
Also Cristin milloti should have been nominated over Kate Hudson 100%
Apparently people were not very happy with Music getting nominated because it has a bunch of autism stereotypes.
Anonymous: Also, nobody in the entire world has seen it.
Michael: they are, Marion Cotillard was nominated for Rust and Bone.
Saw Judas and the Black Messiah, maybe I just wasn’t in the right headspace tonight but I had more than a few issues with it, notably the pacing and focus and some omissions (definitely consider The Murder of Fred Hampton to be definitive overall), but it also had a lot of strengths. I’ll need some time for ratings, although Kaluuya is very deserving nominee (category fraud but not the worst example of it I’ve seen) and if he gets a nom he will get a win imo.
Calvin: Okay then yeah, that’s wack as fuck. Though I’m still optimistic about her chances in the race moving forward.
SAG will be the decider I think.
I’m trying not to care too much about it. It’s not good to always obsess about awards so much maybe - the most important thing should be that one loves the film and that people appreciate it.
100% agree Calvin.
No offense to anyone involved, but I think after today I'm going to take a little break from this blog spot. I just need some time to think some things over..
On a seperate note, I started watched "Demon Slayer" at lunch, and I should be able to complete that by saturday or sunday.
Take any time you need, Mitch. I can assure you no one here has ever meant to offend you nor do we feel as you've tried to offend us either. We very much appreciate your presence here.
Then again, you can always use Matt's account.
Emi: Hey, you want to stop with that "we're the same person" thing please.
Sorry, tried to lighten up the mood
Regarding the Globes:
I have to say first, I was very busy this morning so I didn't see them until late, so my only reaction to seeing Leto's nomination was one of humor, as it was such a classic globes move, I couldn't help but laugh (though given that was probably Raci's spot, any rage is absolutely fair).
As for the rest...
The Good (Disregarding Actor/Supporting Actor) (which is best to focus on to maintain sanity.):
Promising Young Woman. Overjoyed at the love for it, extremely well deserved nominations across the board for it.
The Father love, glad to see it is a player beyond Hopkins, Colman's nomination is extremely well deserved, as are the nominations for picture and screenplay.
Nomadland love, expected but good to see.
Really most of the choices on the whole were generally deserving, on the drama side of things anyways. If Mank is the "worst" best picture nominee, it is something I can live with.
The Bad:
Minari snubs across the board, especially for Youn.
Another Round only in FLL (though expected).
Speaking of Close, I knew it was going to happen but it still stings, particularly over Youn (I hate it when I'm right, and I hate to say it....but the Farewell did better at the Globes than Minari).
They managed to resist Streep...but not Corden.
Prediction Wise:
Picture:
Nomadland vs. Mank vs. Chicago 7 could be the race. Notable that Judas missed here, but not Kaluuya, so maybe that will be the film's major play...we shall see.
Director:
I think we could see very different lineups both at DGA and BAFTA as well, though this is a nice securing place for Zhao, Fincher very much needed this to stay alive. Sorkin frankly doesn't need to get in for his film to be a major player, but this only helps it.
Actor:
Shakes up the perceived 5 a bit, we'll see if SAG confirms or shakes it up again.
Lindo I think bounces back tomorrow, though this suggests that Oldman was perhaps safe all along (as I suggested in my January predictions). Though this does mean, Hopkins and Ahmed as the upsets. I think Hopkins could definitely win here, given the Father did a lot better than Ma Rainey or The Sound of Metal, and Hopkins has never won a globe.
Actress:
Kirby needed this, though it seems she'll be a sole nod, as did Day. They feel vulnerable because of that fact...however the "academy approved field" seems thin (though it is not in reality). Mulligan, McDormand and Davis, all seem to be establishing themselves well.
Supporting Actor:
Well that sets Cohen as the Chicago 7 rep, as we all kind of expected at this point, same with Odom for his film. Kaluuya getting in here is good for him, given the ink he's gotten. Hopefully SAG will do right by Raci, as I really think Leto is Simon Helberg level of silliness. Murray I think could get in tomorrow as well, either way this does put him in contention, particularly since voters could easily pass on the double nods for Boseman.
Supporting Actress:
Well...sadly why one shouldn't take too much investment into critics awards...I have some belief though that SAG will make things right. Colman and Seyfried have secured themselves well. Bakalova is still a ?(Cohen won here in 06 after all). Foster I think is probably a globes over reaction. Close I think misses out in the end (at least I hope), even if she gets in tomorrow...
Also me after arriving to the sea of comments:
https://media.giphy.com/media/3o6MbimqEuoBqM43gQ/giphy.gif
I've got so much to catch up on, I have only seen Another Round and Chicago 7.
Yeah I fully believe Leto is golden globes only (And I hope so because....wow his performance sucked.)
Also James Corden took Leslie Odom junior's spot.
Anonymous:
I could see Bogart there, though later on he typically played more sympathetic roles.
Sounds like an interesting concept, though Robert Culp in the lead is less interesting.
Also I'd ask if there was some way to see Music, but then looking at its reviews...seems like I don't want to see it. Then I saw who directed it and said....aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhh classic Globes.
Louis who do you think is winning the film categories and why?
Anonymous:
A lot of these actually are tricky at the moment.
Drama Picture: The Trial of Chicago 7 (I think populism wins out)
Musical or Comedy: Hamilton (If they went for it, I don't see why they shouldn't go all the way with it.)
Drama Actor: Anthony Hopkins (NGNG, Hopkins hasn't won here, and he's actually campaigning (which particularly matters for the Globes). Also helps they liked The Father a lot more.)
Drama Actress: Carey Mulligan (Keeping with the feeling, and given how much they loved the film, hard not to see it.)
Actor C/M: Lin-Manuel Miranda (Hardest category to predict. I fear Corden could even win here. Maybe they double down on Cohen, probably not. Don't see Patel given his film was unfortunately snubbed. I could see Samberg as well.)
Actress C/M: Bakalova (I could see Taylor-Joy upsetting, particularly if they decide to make TV actress easier for themselves, but I think the buzz will carry her to the win.)
Supporting Actor: Sacha Baron Cohen (I see it as the supporting win for the picture nom/win. Though I still think Kaluuya will win overall. Murray seems unlikely since his film didn't make it. I think they'll get Odom in son. And....Leto...well hopefully not.)
Supporting Actress: Seyfried (I think she probably will just win now, helps that they supported Mank so much, easy way to give it the win.)
Director: Chloe Zhao (I think they use this for their avant-garde bona fides. Particularly since Sorkin and Fincher have won before. King's out given her film wasn't in picture. Fennell would be a great surprise but I don't think so.)
Screenplay: Promising Young Woman (Here's where they reward Fennell. Though watch out for the posthumous win for Fincher, or maybe even The Father, which would be awesome as well. Could just be Sorkin though if they're being lazy.)
Score: Soul (Maybe, crapshoot)
Song: "Speak Now" - (Easy way to get Odom a win.)
Animated film: Soul (I could see them swerve, as they occasionally have with a Wolfwalkers win, but I think Soul takes it.)
Foreign Language: Another Round
Sia is getting destroyed in the Letterboxd reviews lol
In addition one of the reviews called it “just barley better than cats”. Ouch.
Also any chance leto could go lower in the 2016 overall?
Woke up and was disappointed to realise it wasn’t all just a bad dream.
Like Close...how. How.
On the plus side, now I have clear people to support this awards season, Zhao and Mulligan. I don’t think I care about much else anymore.

Also I haven’t divulged this before on here but my grandmother sadly passed back in October, from a stroke. Watching Minari was like getting to spend a bit more time with her.
Sorry to get so personal on here but that definitely plays in big part into why I’m so passionate about her performance this awards season. It really got me to my core.
Calvin: Big Hugs for you, I lost mine sadly in mid December from a combination of old age/dementia which is really gonna make a film like The Father feel a bit like a gut puncher tbh.
This blog I like to think is a bit of a cocktail bar for personal talk, I mean for most of 2019/2020 at least half of my comments were about being unhappy in my job so.
I just like to blame 2020 as a diabolical year in general.
Thank you RatedRStar. And so sorry for your loss too. It has been a terrible year which makes films a nice escape. All godspeed ahead for all of us.
Calvin and Daniel: I'm sorry for the loss both of you have gone through. My grandmother and I are very close, and I'd be devastated if anything happened to her.
I do think that films like Minari getting rejected sting more because of the personal connection we build up. Films have become much more than entertainment, and have a become a source of solace, especially in such a terrible time in the world. As for the future, all I can say is, well, good luck everyone.
To Calvin and Daniel, my condolences to you both.
Thank you, Tahmeed and Louis.
Louis: could I have your thoughts on the following piece of music from ‘Minari’? https://youtu.be/JJWVP1wquwQ
