Another Year and Another Official Lineup

This year lead actor just seems set to these five, and it is difficult to argue out any of them particularly the top four of Chalamet, Domingo, Brody and Fiennes. All four have films with some other support, all have shown up consistently in precursors so far, it seems right in terms of how the performances fit in their careers, they just seem right. Craig is the easy #5 in terms of predictions mainly because he'd in all likelihood be a sole nominee, and he's one of three A24 has to get in (along with Brody and Domingo). But playing a real person, in an against type performance, after a long career, Craig seems right too, and has shown up most places so far as well. If this is the SAG five there is no reason to doubt it. The only spoilers I can envision at the moment are Sebastian Stan and Jesse Eisenberg. Stan has a problem because both of his performances are well respected and have received recognition leaving him in a strange position. I'd say IF he can show up for just one for SAG then it changes the whole game and he can get backed for that performance but SAG voters would need to makeup their mind so Oscar can. And I'm not predicting that due to his internal vote splitting. Eisenberg I only see if A Real Pain goes further than expected, because he already seems extremely likely for screenplay, maybe producing as well so a third nomination doesn't seem like something voters will feel obligated to do. Furthermore it is the less showy performance than his frauding co-lead, and far less showy than his competition in this category. Anything can happen of course but I do feel very confident in this five even before SAG.
Supporting on the other hand does feel trickier. Culkin and Pearce seem like very safe bets based on their early support and the support for their films. Washington has only missed, when in contention, for American Gangster, so it is hard to bet against the guy who could get in relatively easily for a Shakespearean performance or could get in for an overall flop like Roman J. Israel, Esq. He has an extremely showy role, and while Gladiator II is unlikely to be a major contender, it will be a contender for a few techs, so he probably won't be a sole nominee. Edward Norton getting enough late ink, along with a Complete Unknown seeming a possible best picture nominee, makes him seem like the veteran supporting actor to get in with his co-star. Helps also that he's the only one playing a real person out of the actors in possible best picture nominees, which is always a boon. Well actually except for Clarence Maclin who is playing...Clarence Maclin a fictionalized version of himself. Something that I do ponder has kept him from getting in a few places and could create enough hesitation to keep him out. As much as he has a great personal narrative, Sing Sing, doesn't seem like it will be a top five contender, maybe could even miss the top ten in the end, so I wouldn't be truly surprised if he loses out. Although I won't fully bet against him even if he misses SAG as I could see a pure passion push potentially still getting him in last minute. Otherwise, hanging around is Yura Borisov, who like Maclin could get in later particularly due to potential overall passion even if he misses SAG. Also hanging around still is like Stanley Tucci, but for him to ride along with Fiennes I think he needed to be a little more consistent already in his appearances so far. Also possible is Jeremy Strong, coming off Succession, a Tony win leading to an Oscar nomination seems like something that could happen, particularly if maybe he and Stan could drum up some momentum together...but I think he could also do it alone. Still being a sole nominee in all likelihood makes me lean away from him.

Another Year and Another Official Lineup

I may be overthinking this one, but Andrew Scott is my NGNG prediction for a last minute nomination. Although I should say this is dependent on a few things, and it could easily be Wright. But thinking in terms of last minute momentum All of Us Strangers could come off the strongest relatively, getting a last minute push at BAFTA, to not become a huge player but enough for Scott to get in. This also requires in part for Wright to snubbed at SAG in favor of Colman Domingo, the latter whose film is too weak I think to get him beyond SAG. But if Wright gets in SAG, that will probably be enough for it just to be the SAG five likely, though I still think Scott has a chance even then as long as Strangers performs to its apex at BAFTA...which I still think will be a 2 nominations probably Oscar time, but enough theoretically. Now at the moment it seems like we have a clear seven probably, in the pictured five, Wright and Domingo. Domingo being the weakest chance because Rustin's only other possible nomination is song, so I think Domingo can get SAG but that's probably it for him. American Fiction could be a big player or a minor player, so again the variation there allows for Scott to move in. Then there's the rest, who all seem safe-ish as long as their films don't under-perform massively. Could Giamatti get Sidewaysed again? Sure, but seems unlikely at this venture. DiCaprio doesn't miss unless he has internal competition (Waltz, Day-Lewis) if his film is in the top five, so for him to miss Killers would need to stop under-performing severely...like say Scorsese misses DGA which doesn't seem too likely. Then there's Cooper, there is a Maestro backlash brewing, but I don't think that will stop his nomination, it might play into the win, but not the nomination. Then Murphy is the lauded lead, who career wise has paid his dues, and is in the best picture front-runner, no reason to doubt him.
I decided to not overthink supporting actor, as long as we see this five at SAG, there is no reason to second guess it. The broadly comic pair of Gosling and Ruffalo are both well liked by the academy in films that look like they should be big hits there. As the villainous pair of Roberts, Downey and De Niro both seem set to return as well. Downey as the potential winner (though I think this category is open until the SAG winner) in the best picture front-runner, then De Niro in a major player, with the DiCaprio supporting actor boon trend as well to help cement his position. With maybe the exception of De Niro, even if their films under-perform massively, it would be hard to see them missing the final five. Then there's Charles Melton, whose film's performance could go big or small. Even if it is the latter, I could see Melton as the sole nominee, even though currently his trajectory is very similar to the eventually snubbed Dennis Quaid for Far From Heaven (who also did great with the critics and he got a SAG nomination). What helps Melton perhaps avoid that fate, other than the much individual support he's gotten, is that there really isn't obvious alternatives without major shifts happening. If Poor Things, over-performs, then Dafoe can enter the conversation a bit more, if the Holdovers over-performs, maybe Dominic Sessa could make it (though I think being obviously co-lead hurts him), but if the race remains consistent this seems like an easy five to predict. Sterling K. Brown has also been bandied about a bit for American Fiction, though I think his role might be a bit too comparatively small to get in past any of these five, who have all substantial screentime, where his role is more so the type that gets in, in a thinner year. This year is stacked with these five, and I'll be pretty content with predicting them unless SAG and BAFTA do something really unexpected to shift momentum...however that doesn't seem overly likely. And yes Glenn Howerton has peaked with his critics nominations and Indie Spirit nomination...unless he wants to tell me when he'll peak.

Another Year and Another Official Lineup

I'm not sure I need to even talk about Butler, Fraser, and Farrell, although the last's film has the most buzz overall, all three have been consistently touted as the three main contenders on their own, and any indicators so far have supported that notion all the more, to doubt any of them just seems silly. They'd have to miss SAG, which I seriously doubt for all three, for me to second-guess any of them. Bill Nighy is the only one I think could miss SAG, but even then I still think he'd bounce back with the British bloc, and even then his SAG nomination seems very likely still. I think the only question with him is will his film overperform or not, but I think his role, reviews, and just general position as a very well-liked character actor suggests he should be comfortable within the five. That leaves the last spot, in which historically there should be one prior nominee, and unless I'm missing a year, I don't think there's been a five without a prior nominee since before there were five nominees. So that brings us to Tom Cruise, who has that going for him, the fact that he's the prominent face of the biggest film of the year box-office wise, and just seems on a career-high at the moment. Against him, is that it's a role in an action film, and many may argue that it isn't the biggest acting stretch for Cruise. But Cruise has been nominated for a movie star turn before with Jerry Maguire, though that stretched his acting more many would argue, but still Cruise playing into his known presence has led to a nomination before, so it can again. If he gets SAG, I'd say it is probably a done deal. What helps him is beyond the first four, everyone else seems unlikely in one way or another. You have Hugh Jackman in a film that is either hated or given as muted of praise as possible. He could happen, by virtue of the laziness of the acting branch (which one should never underestimate) but really seems unlikely this time. You have a series of unknowns (Oscar wise) Diego Calva, Jeremy Pope, Paul Mescal, and Daniel Giménez Cacho. That is already against them, but worse is none of their films look likely to be major contenders, or in Mescal and Pope's cases, even minor contenders. Mescal seems the most likely of this set just in terms of general buzz, however I'd say SAG is beyond essential (I'm sure he'll get BAFTA, but that no longer matters when it comes to predicting nominees). I'd have more faith in Mescal if he was making a bigger name with the critical wins but he hasn't gotten a single one yet. Out of blue nominees, usually are bigger names with "bigger" performances, so I just don't see it at the moment. You also have Park Hae-il and Song Kang-ho, who probably cancel each other out (if Park had been the one to win CANNES, I might consider him a bit more). As is, I'm not even 100% sure Decision to Leave is going to make it into International feature. Maybe Ralph Fiennes for The Menu? I mean really why not? Seems like one though where the acting branch would need their hand held and told "it's okay to nominate him" for whatever reason. Maybe Hanks for A Man Called Otto, looks very standard as a film but you never know. Honestly if anyone else is going to happen, I think they really HAVE to appear at SAG, but if the pictured five are the SAG five, that's the five, I'd be truly surprised if it wasn't.
So onto Supporting Actor, where I think SAG could go many ways, and regardless of what SAG does, I think Oscar could do its own thing from there. The one thing I think I do know is that Brendan Gleeson and Ke Huy Quan are pretty much guaranteed. I think even if the latter's film falls short of presumption (which the shortlist showed just a hint of weakness) he might be the most guaranteed facet of the film. Beyond that...I do think Barry Keoghan seems very likely. McDonagh's done it before, and Keoghan's shown up enough with Gleeson to see that he's not being forgotten so far. That could switch quickly potentially, but at the moment he seems like a more than decent bet. Now...I struggle because Judd Hirsch and Paul Dano, are both showing support for the likely top fiver, The Fabelmans. Will this be like 49 supporting actress with only three films for one acting category? I don't entirely doubt it oddly enough. Both have praise, Dano has the larger but quieter role, Hirsch the smaller but louder role. Hirsch having a great vet story, Dano having a prominent year. I think both can make it, if The Fabelmans performs as well as it can. It helps because beyond that, things get trickier. Ben Whishaw was touted early, but he's missed more than he's shown up, and his film looks like it could go either way at this very moment. Brian Tyree Henry would NEED Jennifer Lawrence to be a thing, and even then he could miss. Eddie Redmayne I think is a legitimate spoiler, I think he's likely to get SAG, and a prior nominee particularly a winner can get in as the sole nominee, particularly with a juicy role, which he has. So I won't discount him. Pitt's film is going to do some techs but I think will probably struggle for more...probably. He also isn't having his best moment press wise, so I think the academy could pass on him this time. Beyond that no one seems terribly likely, even if they pop up at SAG, so as odd as my five seems historically, it's my prediction at the moment.

Another Year and Another Official Lineup

Well like last year I have less information than usual at this point for predictions, as SAG (the only acting precursor that gives any direct information with actually overlapping voters in terms of nomination) did not readjust their schedule for some reason. Of course last year I did relatively well, only off by one with each lineup, so maybe it is best this way. Anyway, you have the top three of Smith, Cumberbatch and Washington that seem safe. Smith the populist (though his film flopped, however par for course with almost all Oscar contenders) Cumberbatch the critical darling (which has been proved true) and Washington (the academy darling). The latter hasn't been killing it, however his film has yet to hit wide, but he's Washington. He got in for Roman J. Israel, and typically gets in with the right role and reviews. He has both of those, so I'm not going to doubt him, though it has been awhile since  a Shakespearean performance made it, however Washington definitely seems like the guy to break that trend. Then there are really I feel only 4 contenders left who are probably vying for the last two spots. The Academy golden boys and the musical golden boys. The former being DiCaprio and Cooper, who the academy loves, however are showing weakness in the meaningless precursors, and the latter being Garfield and Dinklage who have done well so far. I go with DiCaprio now, because sadly I can only hope Don't Look Now will flop with the academy but must prepare for the worst. Also while Cooper's role is very showy actually, it is showier in a subtler way than DiCaprio's. Out of Dinklage and Garfield, Dinklage I'd feel more willing to predict if his Thrones tenure had ended sooner and on better circumstances. It isn't quite Cranston with Trumbo, who I think definitely ensured his nomination through Breaking Bad. Garfield has a banner year, plus I feel there may be some Sondheim indirect goodwill of some sort. I think of the four you could shuffle them several ways however. Maybe Cyrano's late break helps as well. Maybe it is both musicals in favor of the two academy favorites? Or the other way around, we shall see.
Supporting Actor seems "academy" thin, in terms of contenders they'll consider, then again we haven't seen SAG, so this could get seriously shaken up. Smit-McPhee is the critical darling so far, and seems safe enough. He's about equal with Hinds in the right role in the right film. I'd actually go Dornan for the same film next, as the Academy after that 25 year hiatus has decided they're cool with doubling down in supporting actor. After that I think it is Troy Kotsur based on his success so far, and seems likely even if his film flops otherwise. Fifth spot though, hands up, as I could see so many films having above the line goose eggs. Jared Leto, maybe. Jenkins for The Humans, doesn't seem like it, same with Isaacs for Mass, SAG would be a must for all three I'd say. Simmons for Ricardos? Maybe, but he'd seem like someone to get SAG then miss out. Cooper as a long shot (and if you want to say "wishful thinking" fair enough), but he is Cooper and his role definitely makes an impression. If the film is big, and actress is too tight, it ought to get in somewhere in the acting lineups I think. But sadly I have to be putting someone from Don't Look Up in, as it is a legitimate trend of DiCaprio getting in his supporting actors (since it has happened with ALL of his lead nominations), particularly when the corresponding Tom Hardy, Jonah Hill and Alan Alda nominations were all late breaking "dark horses" in those respective years. Given this actually made me considering switching to Cooper or Dinklage for fifth in lead, in order to be able to ignore the trend. However I won't and because Rob Morgan and to a lesser extent Jonah Hill are typically favored in the film by those who dislike the film, therefore I have to go with the man those who love the film love, therefore must predict Mark Rylance's second Oscar nomination.

Another Year and Another...well delayed...Official Lineup

It would be a great irony if this year, of all years, where I'm making my predictions, before any precursors with voter overlap, was the most accurate in all the years I did this. Doubtful, but worth a thought. This lineup though seems right regarding just general buzz, and lack of alternatives. Outside of these five there just haven't been that many heralded leading turns that received their level of praise. These appear the top five on that notion. Ahmed for the young up and comer. Lindo for a vet finally getting recognition. Boseman being a story within himself, with "undeniable" mentions. Oldman seeming primed for a followup after a win, though I think he could be the one people think could miss out though perhaps will have always been safe, kind of like say a Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game type. Hopkins also received "undeniable" mentions, and seems primed to be recognized once again. Other than these five there is Tom Hanks, who was praised enough, but only enough for a film that seems like probably at best a best picture tech player. Kingsley Ben-Adir for One Night in Miami, received enough praise, but perhaps will not be able to crack against his competitors who aren't part of the same type of ensemble in terms of being overshadowed. Steven Yeun for Minari, needs to make a splash quickly if he's going to make any, and so far he hasn't made one. There could be a dark horse waiting in the wings, but doesn't seem like it at the moment. Maybe Mads Mikkelsen for Another Round? Seems unlikely, and most likely that film's biggest play will be International film only, unfortunately.
Where I had a great degree of false confidence in lead, I will say I have none in supporting. This as I think SAG, Globes and BAFTA could instantly throw all these right out the window. The "Trial" guys who seemed to have been far better bets a couple months ago, now seem in trouble mainly because the critics have not done the one thing they could've done, which would be to decide "who was the best" for voters. In general that film's buzz has faded a bit, however we'll see if that's just on the critics, and it could easily finds it resurgence with the industry awards, it does feel like that type of film. Still I no longer think it will be the first film since The Godfather Part II to get three nominations in BSA, in fact I'm not so sure it will be able to get two (however this could easily be the type of contender far more popular with the public/industry than with critics, so I should not overestimate what won so far by too much). Still if it at least gets one, I do think the most likely one is Sacha Baron Cohen for doing something slightly against type with some additional buzz for his successful return to Borat, then followed by Mark Rylance as the previous winner with the Oscar beloved crusading lawyer role (who I could see still cracking the lineup if the film resurges). Following that it seems Boseman could get double nodded. It isn't a huge role, but one could argue it resonates all the more now that he's gone. Boseman could easily become the first actor double nodded in the same year posthumously, and matching James Dean's record of two posthumous nominations. Following that is Leslie Odom Jr. who benefits from a substantial role plus Hamilton love, and from it seemingly decided that he's the one from the ensemble who should be recognized unlike "Trial". Another, at the moment, seems primed for Paul Raci, who is getting the needed critical love to get voters to take notice. The Sound of Metal honestly seems like a film that will do well as long as voters see it, which the critical mentions are essential for. Finally we have potential late breaker in Daniel Kaluuya for the seemingly juicy role in Judas and the Black Messiah. A role that from the trailer seems primed for a win, however we're still waiting on word for the film, although the fact that it is debuting within the academy's window is a good sign. Otherwise for the dark horses, there is David Strathairn for Nomadland, which sounds like the type of nomination that will only happen if there is an excessive amount of love for the film. Bill Murray which seems very unlikely by how low key that film and that role is. And Glynn Turman who won LA critics, however I can't help but feel his greater Fargo performance had something to do with that. I suppose he could happen though if Ma Rainey's does better than expected, however I think it will probably get a similar nomination pull as Fences did (picture, actor, adapted screenplay and just actress instead of supporting actress).

10th Anniversary of Best Actor and Another Official Lineup

Welcome back to my predictions for who will be the eventually reviewed in the main Oscar lineup. This coming up on my 10th go around of doing this, to which I have a couple hopefully fun things to throw in before we get there. Anyways though let's look onto the lineup that shares the name of this blog. I will say this lineup was quite vexing to reduce to five. This as the only person I would place the safe money just to be safe for the nomination is Adam Driver. This as Joaquin Phoenix, while receiving nearly as many industry mentions, is known to be a rather prickly fellow when it comes to the awards trail, and comic book films are never the safest bet. Joker though seems to have jumped over the "prestige" line though with that Venice win/Globe nominations past Phoenix, and to be fair this is technically a previous Oscar winning role. Following Phoenix is previous winner DiCaprio, who is just looking for his first followup nomination and should get it. I do think he could miss out on assumption, despite the strength of his film. Following that I'm putting Bale, who many are not predicting to make it past SAG/Globe nod, although BAFTA should probably be likely for him as well. Ford V. Ferrari will be a tech player probably with him, and I think can get a best picture nomination quite easily fulfilling that "old school" film-making spot. The main reason for me though is that Bale hasn't really missed out, when he's in contention, since he's gotten his Oscar win. This as he got in for American Hustle, The Big Short and Vice, despite only being really being the "passion pick" for Vice. Then there is spot number 5, super passion pick for Cannes, NY winner Banderas, maybe. This is in no way a guarantee with 4 potential contenders also more than hanging around. There is alternate super passion pick Adam Sandler, who is killing it with the critics, though that did not help Hawke who did even better in that regard last year. Taron Egerton, who has gotten all the citations he's been expected to get so probably should be in the five, and I really can't argue that much against him. The two biggest knocks against him being that he was a relatively early release, and that they gave the win to Rami Malek last year for another musical biopic. Egerton though has already shown he's being remembered, and the Academy nominated Joaquin Phoenix for Johnny Cash the next year after giving the Oscar win to Jamie Foxx for Ray Charles. So really Egerton should probably be in my top five predictions. My early NGNG of Jonathan Pryce doesn't appear to be panning out beyond a Globe nod. After seeing the film, I think it is unlikely he can win now based on the somewhat lightweight approach his film takes to the subject matter, however I do think he still has an outside chance for a nomination as in the past years Antony McCarten written films have always performed best with BAFTA and the Academy above all others. Finally there is two time Oscar winner Robert De Niro leading what should be a nominations juggernaut, who has also missed out on both a Globe and SAG nomination, and is no way a guarantee for a BAFTA nod. I still think he has a strong chance if his film shows that extra bit of strength, which it easily could, or just if these previous snubs this season help push him to that nomination.
Supporting actors seems a bit more manageable however as the three P's of Pacino, Pesci and Pitt all seem pretty safe, with strong showings so far and films that are sure to do well with overall nominations.  SAG nominee Jamie Foxx seems primed to be SAG only nomination, given Just Mercy has made no impression elsewhere. So I'll will look elsewhere. Hanks has gotten in the right places this time, though he's undergoing still an Oscar nomination drought since 2000, that one must imagine carries over as some "we've rewarded him enough mentality". One ponders the same about Anthony Hopkins who too has gone on a long Oscar nomination drought, and could easily earn a BAFTA boost. If he is nominated there, he could take that fifith spot, which would be an all Oscar winners category like 2012, or even potentially shake out Hanks, who I'd say is more vulnerable than the P's, given the Academy has brazenly snubbed him before, and his film does not appear to be a major player, or even a minor player outside of him. The same is not true though for Song Kang-ho in Parasite that is seeming poised to be the foreign language film that can and will be a major Oscar player. Even if he misses BAFTA, I think he can get in bolstered by massive love for the film that seems to becoming more and more evident, the same way Roma ended up with two acting nominations last year. The category though actually doesn't appear to be too expansive however allowing for a potential last minute shakeup. Of course only minor shakeups as this category has fairly limited potential contenders, as the only man I'm forgetting who seems in play is the old sea salt himself, Willem Dafoe. He who seems to have the most against him, given his heavily stylized, horror film that doesn't appear to be the industries cup of tea based on the precursors so far. Dafoe though has managed to be the sole nomination for his films two years in a row, so I wouldn't count him out until the nominations are named.

Another Year and Another Official Lineup

As usual my annual predictions for the official Oscar lineup for Lead and Supporting Actor.
Well for lead actor this is an interesting case where I'd say only front runner Gary Oldman feels absolutely safe. Right now I'm going the SAG five sans Denzel Washington for Daniel Day-Lewis with late comer Phantom Thread, which may or may not have been seen by the SAG voters, however will likely receive a boost from BAFTA either way. It also helps that it is claimed to be his final performance though that should be taken with a grain of salt from the cobbler. Washington should never be discounted though as even though his film was not well received however Washington has never needed his film to do excessively well to get him in. He easily could still find a place only given the state of my other three predictions and even Day-Lewis to a certain extent. Previous nominee James Franco seems poised well enough at his age for a second nomination while also playing a real person, of course if he wasn't playing a real person, well as real as Tommy Wiseau is, it is unlikely this performance would be in the conversation due to its comedic strangeness. That leaves the two youngins, youngins by lead actor standards, Timothée Chalamet and Daniel Kaluuya, who have both gotten the needed recognition however are still somewhat atypical for lead actor Chalamet directly for his age, Kaluuya for working within the horror genre which is rarely recognized. Kaluuya's advantage is his film doing inordinately well for the genre riding on the same sort of wave that pushed Mad Max: Fury Road, that wave will need to ride high Oscar nomination morning though. Chalamet's film on the other hand did not over perform at SAG suggesting his film may not be as loved by the industry as it was by the critics. He still got in though so it shouldn't be anything too concerning. This is my predicted five, but there is always the "I can't believe ** did not get nominated" that could be anyone except Oldman out of this five. That could be in favor of the aforementioned Washington, Tom Hanks, though besides that surprise NBR win he's being uniformly ignored once again, or perhaps Jake Gyllenhaal pulling what Ruth Negga did last year who came in the last second for a film that seemingly had came and went. Or maybe just maybe Harry Dean Stanton? Probably not. He needed the critics' recognition to give him a boost given Magnolia's track record, but a man can still dream.
For supporting things are not any easier when the SAG five went against a specific trend for the past twenty five years that being no two actors from the same film in this category have been nominated since Bugsy back in 92. This could be the film that changes that as both Rockwell and Harrelson have substantial enough roles the film just needs to be adored on Oscar morning. Harrelson's appearance actually is what puts Rockwell's nomination most into question as he seems pretty safe however I could see Harrelson supersede him in a surprise snub. I'm predicting both though based on the film building up its momentum. Willem Dafoe seems the most safe despite his film under performing at both SAG and Globes. It is unlikely it will do well at BAFTA either which often ignores "fringe" America films, in fact I could even see Dafoe missing akin to when McCounaghey missed for Dallas Buyers Club or when Melissa Leo missed for The Fighter. If it wasn't for Martin McDonagh's West End playwright cred the same could be feared for Three Billboards, but the film has that on its side. Dafoe though is probably in whether or not he makes it to BAFTA. That leaves Richard Jenkins in The Shape of Water who has one major problem in Michael Shannon who just last year superseded his co-star in Nocturnal Animals against all odds. The Shannon Shuffle could easily happen again. My final prediction is for Christopher Plummer in All the Money in the World. A late comer to both the race and even his own film however his individual praise and the bonus narrative of stepping in at the last minute to salvage his film seems too juicy for voters to pass up. If Plummer was not already an Oscar winner I could have even conceivably seen him win. Of course this still leaves many other contenders for potential upsets. Steve Carell for Battle of the Sexes stayed in the race even as the rest of his film has been forgotten, that is probably worth something, in fact if say Emma Stone surprised in Actress the narrative for Carell is all the better. Then there are co-stars Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg. Internal competition and problematic since neither showed up at SAG, not even Hammer who was nominated for J. Edgar, of all things. Either could show up still particularly Stuhlbarg who has a banner year where he likely will appear in three best picture nominees. Then there are the potential random nominees like Mark Rylance or Ben Mendelsohn who I still say has a chance to show support for Dunkirk or Darkest Hour, but I'd say their chances are gone if BAFTA doesn't support them. Maybe Jason Mitchell for Mudbound, however it seems like he should have gotten in at SAG if anywhere, and the anti-Netflix bias could easily sink that film as was the case for Beasts of No Nation despite its precursor love. Patrick Stewart got a bit of surprising critical support however that doesn't seem enough to overcome the anti-comic book bias. Then there is Will Poulter who is a very unfortunate case of just being in the wrong role, in the wrong film, at the wrong time, despite the praise he received.

Another Year And Another Official Line-up

Well as usual my predictions for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor
Now for Lead Actor I quite simply with the SAG line up. It's usually a pretty good indicator I suppose and really any guess is as good as another. This is an odd one in that no contender, outside of DiCaprio, seems especially strong (not in terms of quality necessarily). For example the other presumed locks, Redmayne, and Fassbender have films that have been under performing in other areas. I still think they're in, as much as one can be in, but that leaves two others spots. Cranston's film has been over performing, and he seems well liked, though that may not transition to the Academy who have not dealt with him before so to speak, as SAG and the Golden Globes have. This leaves Depp for me who is the only other previous multiple nominee besides DiCaprio, though like Fassbender and Redmayne his film has been under performing otherwise. Of course I've now probably doomed two of these fellows to being snubbed, or hey maybe just one by predicting them now. As in contention there is also Matt Damon, Will Smith, possibly Michael Caine, Ian McKellen and I believe (probably wrongly) Tom Hanks. My Hanks thoughts my be a delusion, but it will seem a little odd that the same academy who embraced War Horse will ignore Bridge of Spies outside of Supporting Actor. Not to mention technically speaking only the Academy "owes" him for Captain Phillips since he got in everywhere else.
Ahh now Supporting Actor is the opposite of last year, where apparently there was only one possible line up. This time there's at least ten different legitimate combinations one could come up with, the reason I only decided to do one set this time. Now for my explanations of my predicted five. Elba and Rylance have the precursor love, and just seem like they're in, although who knows with this category. Shannon almost has just as much, but everyone believes he'll miss. I'm banking on 99 Homes getting a surprise Original Screenplay nomination, "legitimatizing" his nomination. Stallone missed SAG, though many claim his campaign came late which is possible, and the whole underdog story for his nomination just seems a little too good to ignore when we're talking about Rocky Balboa himself. Then of course there's Tom Hardy who hasn't been doing too well, but hey DiCaprio gets his supporting actors in, which naturally will probably stop this time, though I'm just going to have to stick with it anyway. My only other solace being the films of Alejandro González Iñárritu are well liked by the academy. Now the problem is past those five there's Christian Bale, Paul Dano, Jacob Tremblay, who've also turned up in the precursors then the supporting players of presumed best picture front runner Spotlight with Michael Keaton and Mark Ruffalo. Now with ten actors in the running that potentially opens up for a thin vote for each contender open up to a slew of dark horses. Dark horses which likely would be related to the academy showing more love than was expected to a particular film. That means Black Mass: Joel Edgerton, Joy: Robert De Niro, Steve Jobs: Seth Rogen, Youth: Harvey Keitel, Sicario: Benicio Del Toro, Brooklyn: Emory Cohen, The Hateful Eight: Walton Goggins.

Best Actor 2014: Results

5. Steve Carell in Foxcatcher - Steve Carell unfortunately portrays his character as an obvious psychopath when a subtler approach likely would have been more effective. His performance is not without merit, but even the best elements are hurt due to his work being fundamentally flawed.

Best Scene: John du Pont does a training session while his mother watches.
4. Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything - His film's depiction of Stephen Hawking might be a bit inadequate, but Redmayne's performance never is. He gives an especially remarkable and convincing depiction of the decay caused Hawking's disease.

Best Scene: At dinner with Jane and Jonathan.
3. Bradley Cooper in American Sniper - Like Redmayne his film does leave something to be desired. Bradley Cooper though elevates his material by giving a powerful portrayal of the toll of war on a both on the battlefield and at home.

Best Scene: His first kill.
2. Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game - The film demands that Cumberbatch be a delightful eccentric genius and a tragic suicide. Cumberbatch mends these differing tones by being an endearing hero, and a heartbreaking victim.

Best Scene: Turing after his chemical castration.
1. Micheal Keaton in Birdman - Good Prediction mcofra7. Michael Keaton easily stood above his competition for me with his great portrayal of a superhero actor proving himself. Whether the allusion is intentional or not, Keaton certainly proves himself here. He guides the film brilliantly with his multifaceted performance that meets every challenge presented to him. He attains greatness with this entertaining and truly inspiring work.

Best Scene: Kinda all of them, but I'll say....Riggan's flight of fancy.
