Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1981: Results

5. James Woods in Eyewitness - The most interesting part of his film as he manages to find some character in really what isn't much of a role.

Best Scene: Confronting Daryll
4. David Warner in Time Bandits - Warner gives a wonderfully over the top turn that brings just the right heightened villainy to his film.

Best Scene: "A Reasonable Man"
3. Dennis Hopper in Out of the Blue - Hopper gives a quietly disturbing turn where he slowly reveals the vile nature of his man.

Best Scene: Deciding to rape his daughter.
2. Griffin Dunne in An American Werewolf in London - Dunne balances comedy and horror as his demonic messenger.

Best Scene: Second visit.
1. Nicol Williamson in Excalibur - Good predictions Luke, 8000's, Tahmeed, Ytrewq and Mitchell. Williamson delivers a downright brilliant turn that both gives the material the absolute gravitas it needs, while also constantly subverting it with his wily turn.

Best Scene: Tricking Morgana

Next Year: 2016 Lead

I have a question. How do some of you know which year's gonna get updated next and get new reviews??? Cause like I already saw a comment a while ago here, I believe it was of Luke's, which mentioned 2016 getting updated next.

Luke Higham said...

Perfectionist: Louis has largely followed the same path as the original alternates. He started both with 1971. For every cycle, its 90s, 70s, 80s, 10s, 60s, 00s, 50s, 30s, 40s and back again. Louis will likely finish with 1939 again since it's arguably the peak of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

I didn't comment specifically on his review, but seeing Williamson as the best supporting actor of 81' further cemented my love of his performance. Although I wasn't the pioneer behind the request, I still thought it to be striking, entertaining work that unquestionably elevates the film.

As for the line up, I believe I now have two requests in the bank - and to be honest, I'm still trying to think of solid performances to review. There might be something to dig up in some old horror/sci fi movies I liked in my youth. That being said, it will take a bit before I find something worthwhile.

Luke Higham said...

Michael McCarthy: What's your opinion now of Nate Parker in The Birth Of A Nation because I remember you giving him a 5 when you first it.

I have to admit I'm really curious as to what Louis will think of it because I recall it having a great deal of buzz when it first premiered then the allegations killed it stone dead.

If there's no possibility of Song going up for The Age Of Shadows then I'll take Lahti.

By the way, random performance note here...

I finished "The Terror" recently (great series!), and have been getting some exposure to certain episodes of "Mad Men". Either way, that's been an interesting pair of shows to watch simultaneously, namely for Jared Harris' strikingly different turns. He's very much his father's son, and I mean that positively with Jared inheriting Richard's range and command of the screen - and also appearance nowadays.

Anonymous said...

Mitchell: I love that series. What did you think of Menzies.

ruthiehenshallfan99 said...

RatedRStar: to be fair, this is the same year Pia Zadora was named the new rising star or whatever the award was.

Mitchell Murray said...

Anonymous: A strong performance throughout, though Menzies particularly shines in the final episodes where Fitzjames' is at his most exhausted and vulnerable.

I must say, the entire cast acquitted themselves rather well, to the point where I'm struggling to think of a weak link acting wise. The show's MVP, though, is surely Harris.

Luke Higham said...

Mitchell: Same here. :)

Matt Mustin said...

Mitchell: I started watching Mad Men too, and I was liking it, but they took it off Netflix and I haven't gone back to it yet.

Mitchell Murray said...

Matt: It's more a series I've jumped into at random (though frequent) spots, but haven't actually watched it from start to finish.

From what I've seen, though, Hamm's work at least lives up to it's reputation.

Emi Grant said...

I binge-watched all of Mad Men back when the pandemic started. Terrific show on its first 5 seasons. The last 2 aren't too shabby either, but it definitely peaks on the middle of its run if you ask me.

Mitchell Murray said...

Emi: Duly noted. I've seen up to the start of season 4, but again, it hasn't been a complete viewing.

Also, to revert back to "The Terror", it was very intriguing to see Harris go from Lane Pryce to Francis Crozier; The former being a very composed performance with Harris' own accent, while the latter being an accented portrayal of a man slowly breaking down from isolation, adversity and cold.

23. Colleen Camp - They All Laughed
24. Margit Carstensen - Possession
25. Ellen Sandweiss - The Evil Dead -

Yes.

Ytrewq:

McGill & Perlman - (The whole cast of Quest For Fire give absolutely rock solid performances limited in the purpose of just depicting early man as they exist like a nature documentary. It does work wholly and their performances help to facilitate that in a straightforward way.)

Pele - 2(He really doesn't have a part, he's just there to EVENTUALLY show off some moves, which honestly there was too little of and John Huston doesn't even shoot it particularly well.)

Louis Morgan said...

Welles - 1.5(Everything that Butterfly touches go to rot including Welles's performances who seems entirely surprised that he's even in such a trashy movie. Far from his finest hour as he just kind of seems lost within the terrible film.)

Edwards - 1.5(Every Mommie Dearest performance that isn't Dunaway, is just aggressively dull, dull in a way that just makes the screen seem less interesting, less inviting, closer to paint drying really.

Brosnan - (Well it is all about his final expression, which is just pitch perfect in portraying supreme confidence and a menace in that confidence.)

Anonymous:

Guarnieri - (Gives a moving performance that might be slightly overshadowed by Montenegro but on his own accord gives a moving portrayal of the quiet dignity of the old man. He exudes the right natural warmth if also a certain sense of the man being a bit overwhelmed.)

Hauer - (His performance is basically just a series of menacing stares with that Hauer charisma to back it up. That is enough for him to be a more than decent villain even as the part might as well be written as "evil terrorist" as there's nothing interesting in the character beyond that. Hauer though does what he can to create a captivating presence by just being his menacing self in a menacing way. It is not enough to make a great villain but he makes a good one.)

Dreyfuss - ( The Sea Inside is not based on a true story. Dreyfuss delivers a good performance though as a man who only has the use of his neck up. Dreyfuss manages to find the right combination between this sense of charisma in the character where he conveys a sense of sardonic knowing while still alluding to the right undercurrent of the pain the character is going through. Although I think the film limits the story just a bit by making a relatively simple scenario of a man going against the system more so than even about euthanasia, Dreyfuss does deliver on the wry passion needed for the part as the advocate for the man's own suicide with though the intensity to show that it obviously is not a blithe decision on his part by any means.)

Razor:

Marchand - (Fine but didn't stand out to me in any particular way.)

Topol - (He's quite a bit of fun in bringing the Topol energy to the false villain. Topol brings the right kind of flamboyance that manages to work within the Moore ridiculousness without just being ridiculous.)

Glover - (He's fine in doing his typical villainous thing but I wouldn't say stands out too much here in that regard.)

Bouquet - (A theoretically more interesting Bond girl in terms of the overall character, but only theoretically. The idea of her revenge is barely touched upon, though she's okayish with doing the sexy cold routine it doesn't mean much.)

Tony:

It's on the list is all I can say.

RatedRStar:

Indeed.

Tahmeed:

Well whenever you see an actor speak intelligently on a part, you can often see where the greatness comes from. I hadn't thought about it, what Considine writes about is very illuminating to part of his performance I hadn't fully considered. Also shows what a great actor can do, because that scene of at least some controversy didn't end up having *that* much of a greater purpose in the scheme of the overall story, but Considine gave it purpose within his performance.
