Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2009: Results

5. Boman Irani in 3 Idiots - Irani gives an enjoyable performance as the grimacing grump fixated on his beliefs, and while rushed he delivers his character's new found heart earnestly.

Best Scene: Introduction.
4. Adel Bencherif in A Prophet - Bencherif gives a moving portrayal of humanity within a world of vicious crime.

Best Scene: Alone at home.
3. Guillermo Francella in The Secret in Their Eyes  Francella gives a funny, charismatic and also moving portrayal of the "sidekick" investigator who actually might be the most competent of all.

Best Scene: What might have happened.
2. Paul Schneider in Bright Star - Schneider impressively transforms himself into this period writer, but also gives a remarkable depiction of a charming yet hectoring man with an insecure heart.

Best Scene: "I failed John Keats"
1. Fred Melamed in A Serious Man - The shortest performance I reviewed here but the one that it is the hardest for me to forget. He's just leaves an ever lasting impression with his one of a kind portrayal of the most patronizing of passive aggressiveness superiority that is also absolutely hilarious.

Best Scene: The three meeting.

Next: 1958 lead (May not be a lineup, we'll see.) Also going to take a week hiatus to catch up on some 2023 films.

Louis: For the sake of convenience, could you give any 2023 film/cast thoughts on the next post. Realized that any thoughts given on the second/third page of comments don't show up on Google searches.

Emi Grant said...

Louis: So, I see you've watched Beau is Afraid. Your thoughts and ratings on the cast?

Also, a bit of a redundant question, but will you care to save Phoenix?

Emi Grant said...

Yeah, nvm. What Tahmeed said, lol.

Tony:

Not in a rush to watch No Hard Feelings I probably will at some point, but not yet, I mean I frequently dislike well praised raunchy comedies, so a middling one doesn't intrigue me.

Someone will need to sell me on Enys Men, as I'm personally getting fed up with a certain vein of arthouse horror movies.

I've already seen and reviewed Palm Trees some time ago.

I do want to watch Full Time, but it falls as 2022 for me, so it isn't a top priority at the moment.

I will see Sanctuary and Reality.

Tahmeed:

I plan on giving my ratings rundown in the comment section for the 58 lead lineup.

Hey everyone!

Wanted to share something here with the people on this site. My life is currently in a state of change, and one of those changes is that I'm launching another blog. I'm going to try this again after some time, but it's not going to cover films/performances; Louis has set an impossible standard to match in that regard. My new blog will be dedicated to animated properties (IE shows, films, short films, etc..). Maybe that's not a terrible unique idea either, but I feel there's a lot I could discuss in that area.

I'll put the link below for anyone whose curious. There's not much now, but I'll see where things go from here. If anyone's interested, then I'd appreciate your input and following me from the site's inception. Wish me luck, guys, and thank you.

Mitchell: Love the idea of covering animated series/films in more depth, wish you the best of luck!

Mitchell: Sounds very fun, looking forward to it! For recommendations, it could be interesting to see you review some Looney Tunes shorts (esp. Duck Amuck and The Dover Boys).

Louis: Your general thoughts on Animaniacs, Tiny Toons, Pinky and the Brain, and Freakazoid?

Emi Grant said...

Mitchell: I used to keep a shortcut in Chrome to your old blog, even after you took it down. Good to know there's a new link to fill that spot with now.

Looking forward to it.

Mitchell: I've only just finished making a animated films to watch list that I was planning on sending to Louis after he completely finished the bonus rounds. If you want me to send it to you, I'm happy to oblige.

I must note that any films missing are due to Louis having seen them already and will find most of them in his rankings anyway.

I finally saw Man of the West. It's the best performance of Gary Cooper's career, just like Spencer Tracy is another one of those overrated actors who one day is well recognized by Louis.

I should say, Sarsgaard is really great and would be deserving of a review on here. Spaeny is good but there were much better choices to be made (and I don't mean Stone who gives the best performance of the festival, but Golden Lion was the eighth choice for the best possible boost going forward).

Incidentally, my ratings for all the films I saw at the fest (ranked here https://boxd.it/oYXjy)

Luke: Just sent you a email back but the address didn't go through.

Maybe try sending it to my email - MitchellMurray137@gmail.com.

Also, everyone I already have an idea for my first animated review...it involves a flying mammal and the colour red.

Luke Higham said...

Mitchell: Did you get the email.

Mitchell Murray said...

Luke: Yes I did. The majority of the older stuff I haven't heard of, but we have a lot of shared titles from the 90s onwards.

I've always wanted to watch "Kiki's Delivery Service" and the original "Ghost in the Shell", for instance.

Mitchell Murray said...

Also, the film I was looking to review first is on the list, so that works out nicely.

Mitchell Murray said...

Hey everyone....my first review is on my animation blog.

I can't promise when I'll post another analysis, or how often I'll be able to do it. I do promise to keep posting as much as I can, though, so if anyone here is interested, it's there for you to see.

Mitchell: Looking forward to the following reviews and have fun with the new blog! Having rewatched Under the Red Hood a few months ago I can say it's a very well realized story with Jensen Ackles being the MVP (also can we all agree that John DiMaggio is infinitely better than Leto as street boss Joker?).

Speaking of animation, I've just finished watching The Tick animated series from the 1990s. Not every episode is realized in an amazing manner, but regardless it's a highly enjoyable and funny cartoon with a compelling setting that goes way beyond just being a simple parody. Lovely stuff, check it out.

Louis, I recall you saying you watched Mad Men's Commissions and Fees without having seen the rest of the show, may I ask for your thoughts on that episode?

Marcus said...

Louis: Your top 5 performances across the Karate Kid/Cobra Kai universe? (treating the performances in the original films as separate from the performances given by the same actor on the show).
