«Oldest ‹Older 201 – 394 of 394What are your top 10 child acting( under 18) performances?
Youn for the win at the Spirits, lovely!
Palm Springs takes Best First Screenplay at Spirits.
Raci wins Supporting Actor at Spirits now.
Raci's speech was wonderful.
Crip Camp takes Documentary, and I'll be honest I'll be happy to see it win over Octopus Teacher. It's not amazing but hell, at least got a purpose.
Promising Young Woman takes screenplay, of course.
PYW for Screenplay, continuing its exceptional run.
I watched Breaker Morant, which I thought was great.
Woodward-5
Thompson-5
Brown-4.5
Fitz-Gerald-4
Mullinar-4
Waters-3.5
I MAY DESTROY YOU!!! Finally. I liked Queen's Gambit a lot but it's been frustrating not seeing this show get the love it deserves. So well deserved.
Riz Ahmed, richly deserved!
Riz Ahmed won the Spirit Award
CAREY FREAKING MULLIGAN
Nomadland wins Best Feature
*pretends to be shocked*
All in all, very happy. Can't say I wasn't hoping for a few surprises here and there, but most categories I voted for went with my choice and even the ones that didn't picked great winners.
I will say though, it feels very weird to follow a Spirits Awards ceremony where so many winners are an Oscar contender of some sort whereas like last year, almost every winner was entirely shut out from the Oscars.
Louis: What does Riz Ahmed winning mean for Chadwick's chances at the oscars?
Nothing, there’s zero overlap with voting bodies. Just for reference I was a voter and all I had to do was buy membership, you don’t need to be an industry member to vote.
It remains very much a Boseman/Hopkins spoiler race.
Anonymous & Calvin:
I imagine there is probably at least one voter who is an Oscar voter as well, but it doesn't mean *too* much. Having said that, just in terms of general trends, I think it shows that while I do think Boseman is probably going to win in the end, the final tally probably will not be by a large margin.
Louis. True, I meant in a more general sense I think. And the Oscars will always throw some out of the loop curveballs our way for sure.
So on a random note, I'm going to finish the series "Hunter X Hunter" from where I left it off last year (The "Chimera" and "Election" arcs, for those who are familiar). That's a total of 73 episodes, which will take me well beyond the start of May, but I'll offer my full thoughts upon completion.
Mitchell: what do you think about the Kevin Staudt cover of Last To Know?
Tim: When it comes to acoustic covers of Rock songs, the thing I often note is that they help illuminate the singer's vocal performance - even though I still prefer the original instruments/tempo much of the time.
That being said, the Staudt version isn't half bad if I do say so myself.
On the note of music, I'd like to diverge somewhat and ask you guys about the following tracks; They aren't songs in the vein of what we've been discussing, but instead come from other media like games and animated shows.
I Burn - RWBY
I'm My Own Master Now - Metal Gear Rising Revengeance
Ikari - Rooster Teeth/Death Battle
Ryu Vs Gouken Theme - Street Fighter 4
Louis: Thoughts on the dinner scene between Nicholson and Saito.
My cast rankings for Falcon and the Winter Soldier, if anyone's interested.
1. Wyatt Russell
2. Carl Lumbly
3. Anthony Mackie (he's this high because of the last episode)
4. Daniel Bruhl
5. Sebastian Stan
6. Florence Kusumba
7. ?????
8. Don Cheadle
9. Erin Kellyman
10. Georges St. Pierre
11. Adepero Oduye
12. Danny Ramirez
13. Emily VanCamp
Matt: Almost exactly the same as you, except Lumbly might be my MVP. Bruhl could’ve been higher but thought he was kind of wasted in the end.
Calvin: Bruhl would be higher but I hated how they wrote him.
I should say I think my top 5 are great, 6, 7 and 8 are good to just fine and then after that ehhh...
Completely random side note, watched Citizen Kane on the big screen, which I will say one needs to do, although I always thought it was a great film, this was an entirely different experience as I appreciated every element of the film all the more, and it had a greater emotional impact on me than every before.
David Jones:
Kevin Costner is a bit the imperfect leading man of earlier Hollywood in he's a bit of a mix of Gary Cooper, John Wayne and Gregory Peck. He's the "strong silent type" in presence, or at least intended presence, though a bit adapted for the 80's/90's era he came up in. Like those other actors, he has some less than stellar performances to his name. Where really I would say he's someone who can't make a role that's not there work. He also might take a role that theoretically relies on the "strong silent type" and be kind of bland, not unlike Cooper honestly. His better early performances tend to be either in a strong role, that he can make something out of, or a role that let's him riff a bit more on that presence. As he's gotten older I actually think he's become more so the type he was originally intended to be. Some of his more recent performances "Hidden Figures" and "Let Him Go" that rely on that old school style gravitas, he now delivers on. So honestly I think he could be someone who will deliver his best work when he's older, much like Gregory Peck.
Anonymous:
I believe I've given that list somewhere.
8000's:
One of my favorite scenes for Hayakawa, Guinness and the film. This as you get such a genuine moment from Saito talking about himself, and honestly trying to reach out in a way of the man revealing the humanity in himself to his enemy. This against Guinness portraying Nicholson who will have none of it, and is steadfast as always, showing the kind of madness from a code that dictates something that is truly illogical.
Louis what would be your Falcon and the Winter Soldier ranking if you finished it?
Louis: Does that mean Welles could go up for Citizen Kane.
Anonymous:
1. Wyatt Russell
2. Carl Lumbly
3. Daniel Bruhl
4. Sebastian Stan
5. Anthony Mackie
6. Florence Kasumba
7. Don Cheadle
8. ???(Though kind of distracting, though that's probably on me)
9. Erin Kellyman
10. Adepero Oduye
11. Georges St.Pierre
12. Emily VanCamp
13. Danny Ramirez
Luke:
He's already gone up, but I'll get to that when I get back to 41.
Louis: Happy to hear that. The Welles re-analysis will be very interesting.
Louis: Thoughts on all those ranked FWS performances.
Anonymous:
Russell - (The best aspect of the show on every front. This as Russell is great choice here altogether, this as he again has his old man's charisma, but he also can do the thing his old man can do, which is smile a little *too* much in the best of ways. This as he manages to hit this fine balance between a guy who is genuine but also way to much to the point of insufferable. He hits this fine line in playing a man trying to be a hero. It is really effectively done by him. This though is on top of a genuine portrayal of the sense of vulnerability in the man trying to be the hero and not living up to it. Every step of his arc is brilliantly realized by Russell as he manages to capture the intensity of it, but also the more earnest moments that slowly come up in the character's journey of basically learning what it takes to be a true hero. Russell's performance hits every mark as he manages to be both a proper jerk, while also slowly garnering a certain sympathy as well. His journey felt the most complete thing from the show, a show I do have MANY issues with.)
Lumbly - (Speaking of issues, I actually the show really failed to make the story of his character naturally part of the main story, felt completely shoehorned in on a writing front. Having said that, Lumbly gives a striking performance of a man suffering from an earnest bitterness of his mistreatment years ago. He knocks out every one of his scenes in just delivering such a powerful sense of his emotional brokenness from his horrible experience. Although I didn't love how the character was implemented, Lumbly honestly made up for it by the sheer emotional honesty of his work.)
Bruhl - (The character really is almost completely different, other than his hatred of superheroes, this as he's now a charismatic kind of evil rather than a man defined by a suicidal conviction. I guess the years between he found a new lease on life? Sure why not. Anyways, I didn't exactly mind just because Bruhl is so much fun in the part. He really wholly delivers on every single moment of his character's sort of above it all manner, while still having this menace to his work. He's really entertaining in the part, even if I wholly understand the complete 180 on his character.)
Stan - (I mean a strong continuation of what he's been doing in the role up until this point. I mean I'm in general a fan of Stan, and this is just another reason why. Every chance he gets for something more potent he delivers on, and overall just gives an effectively likable, if reserved turn.)
Mackie - (Delivers what he's been delivering in the other films as Falcon, as limited as the part has been at times, but getting to go a bit further here. I think where he most excels actually is picking up on the Chris Evans approach of a true earnestness. Mackie completely delivers on that, particularly in the final episode.)
Kasumba - (I mean in mainly a variation on Danai Gurira's performance, but she still gives enough of a life of her own to be sure still. Makes the right kind of impact in her few minutes of screentime.)
Cheadle - (Wasted as always in the role, but I always like seeing him.)
??? - (I thought she was fine in what she was given, but given how little importance she had here, I frankly could've done without it because it did take me out of the show when she first showed up. I have a feeling it is setup for the future, something I HATE about these Disney shows.)
Kellyman - (She better NEVER be cast as the subversion of the "badass" again, as seeing it again after Solo, I was like "Really Disney twice?". Furthermore the strive to gain sympathy for her character really fell flat here, though again more so the writing. Kellyman I think is okayish at times, but really the whole contrived nature felt a bit forced at times. This as I don't think she has the charisma in the part, nor did she have it in Solo, to really project big even as "small", which I think both parts needed. Having said that she does have some decent minor moments in there.)
Oduye - (Eh really forgettable in a forgettable "family" role.)
St. Pierre - (Forgettable generic villain turn.)
VanCamp - (Man was the writing behind her character terrible. She didn't help it though as those moments of the various reveals I did not believe in the slightest.)
Ramirez - (Horribly bland pseudo-side kick, really hope he is not the new Falcon, as I found him entirely un-charismatic here.)
Louis: I agree with every bit of that.
I actually found Stan a bit underwhelming and Mackie was consistently very good. And I don’t think the show was very good overall, but at the very least I managed to get through it.
Has anyone else here been watching Invincible? This week’s episode was fantastic.
Also watched Mortal Kombat, where after the opening scene I thought "wait is this actually going to be good?"...then the rest of the movie happened.
Ratings and thoughts on the cast.
Louis: Any scene with Sanada in was great...so a grand total of two.
It's sort of sad, but also unsurprising, that one of the very best video game movies is arguably the first "John Wick"; That is too say, one could easily imagine it's story structure and action scenes as a kind of "Max Payne" spin off.
On a different note, I watched "Cold Pursuit" on a complete whim tonight, and it was better than expected; I would say the execution of it's premise/tone is decent enough, and much of the cast is good/okay (Bateman being a glaring exception, since his accent really makes me admire Hugh Laurie's "House" turn all the more).
I actually liked TFATWS more than I thought I would. It’s definitely uneven and rushed, but I liked all of the ideas it was throwing around, even if only a few of them stuck. Lumbly easily the MVP, and honestly the best performance in the entire MCU, and I say that with zero hesitation. As for your point on Kellyman, I agree she’s not perfect, but I thought the casting worked. I liked that Karli was more like a wounded puppy even when she was trying to be threatening. I don’t know, I guess I appreciate open vulnerability in places that I shouldn’t expect. Kind of wish they went further with Walker, but I guess that would risk turning him into a PG-13 Homelander. You are right about the Sharon twist sucking, it adds nothing and honestly isn’t even an interesting route to go down with that character.
Luke:
Honestly hated so many things about the movie, but the worst offender was the so called remix of the Mortal Kombat theme without a guy yelling "MORTAL KOMBAT"...what is even the point. Also 90's movie > in almost every respect, some of the action is better here (though I hated the cross cut fights that just seemed like the movie was trying to get over with) and Sub-Zero/Scorpion are served better to be sure....and that's it.
Tan - 1.5(Bland lead. Why did we need Joe every-man anyways? I mean really I don't understand it, he's right up there with that Joe every man in the first Hellboy that seems like the product of some studio note entirely, although here worse, because well you could easily make Liu Kang the any man.)
Ludi Lin - 2.5(Speaking of...the guy playing Liu Kang is also better. Doesn't have enough to do to really make a proper impact, but even with that I found myself caring more about his journey as poorly conceived as it was. He actually has some charisma though that is rather lacking in Tan.)
McNamee - 2(Delivers exposition rather poorly, the comedy moments even worse.)
Lawson - 2(Intended as a scene stealing performance, though I found him more annoying than funny...so mission not accomplished.)
Asano - 2.5(Actually wasn't terribly particularly impressed by him here. I'll say it without reservation, Lambert was better as he brought something a bit off-beat for the exposition. Here it is just straight forward, he's not terrible at it, but it is kind of boring.)
Brooks - 2.5(He's less bad than most of everyone else.)
Han - 2(Eh as a counter to Asano found him more forgettable overall, and then completely underwhelming compared to Tagawa in the original. He's just one note evil, and doesn't even play that one note all that well here.)
Taslim & Sanada - 3/3.5(Man oh man do I wish I could see the film about their rival clans instead. Anyways Taslim brings some genuine menace here. Sanada bringing some genuine pathos and the right degree of intensity as well. These two are bringing it, though in a way that just helps to highlight how bad the rest of the film is.)
Calvin:
Yeah pretty much.
Louis: There is a potentially great film you could make regarding the Shirai Ryu and Lin Kuei clans, let alone the iconic rivalry between Sub and Scorpion.
Also, I'll again support your point about the "every man", since if your going to have one for MK it should be either Liu Kang or Johnny Cage.
They really should've just let Ludi Lin be the lead, he's charismatic, he can do action, and also he's an established fan favourite.
Kind of loved how Sanada pretty much played that first scene with all the intensity of a great samurai film.
It's funny, I was only reading Welles's review yesterday and I was about to ask if he could go up for Citizen Kane. Surprised to see it top The Maltese Falcon though.
Tahmeed: That review definitely needs changes to it. That it's a bit overrated claim holds no weight anymore.
Louis: If it doesn't spoil anything, has Cotten also gone up to a 5 for Citizen Kane?
Anonymous: I highly doubt cotton will go up.
With Welles, I'm curious whether the slightly theatrical in some scenes reservation with his performance has gone completely out the window. If it has, a five could be possible.
Louis: What do you think of this scene? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-uXk1N3yeI
Also, this scene after that one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7N0W_YDgDLI
Louis: From what you could remember, what have been the most palpable theatre/cinema experiences you've had.
I finally watched Airport, and it's definitely a product of its time, for better and for worse. I lean a bit more positive than negative, but I doubt I'll watch this again.
Lancaster: 3/3.5
Martin: 3
Seberg: 3
Bisset: 3/3.5
Hayes: 3.5 (close to a 4 for me, but definitely one of the weaker winners)
Heflin: 3.5
Kennedy: 3
Nelson: 2.5
Nolan: 2.5
Wynter: 3
Stapleton: 3.5
Helen Hayes was a hoot, I'll say that as well.
What are your top ten Disney villains?

Tahmeed:
Well upon that most recent viewing the film finally hit me on the emotional level that had been missing on previous viewings though also the visuals are something to behold all on their own in the theater, my appreciation originally being more detached though I think the film is one where you do need to recognize objective brilliance, which had been the case for me. Now I finally experienced it full force, and it truly was something.
Robert:
I'll admit I dropped out after the first episode, not that I hated the show or anything, just didn't quite hit my "chuckle" minimum for a comedy. That despite being Berry's best efforts, and I'll admit the rather impressive turn by David Dawson on a riff of Hurt's performance as the Elephant Man, and was my favorite part of the first episode. I'll say though both clips obviously feature more goodness on that front as he manages to do Hurt's style though through a comedic funnel rather effectively.
Luke:
Blade Runner 2049
Mad Max: Fury Road
Return of the King
Fellowship of the Ring
Citizen Kane
Silence
The Two Towers
The Dark Knight (Imax)
Inglorious Basterds
Phantom Thread

I have my final Oscar predictions here for anyone interested: https://flickscene.blogspot.com/2021/04/oscars-2021-final-predictions.html
Aidan: I really do not want Trial to win over Promising Young Woman.
I published the 2020 winners in my award!
Check on my Instagram (@brazinterma) or https://www.instagram.com/brazinterma/
Since Toshiro Mifune is one of your favorite actors, have you watched the miniseries Shogun?
I’m already getting emotional seeing the Minari cast on the red carpet lmao I don’t know how I’m going to make it through this ceremony
I won't have enough time to make full predictions. Just wanted to say I'll be that guy no one likes who bets on Glenn Close because I fear the worst may happen.
Fennell wins screenplay, first choice is a great one.
Lovely!! So happy for her.
The Father takes adapted, amazing.
Great start so far.
Two AMAZING wins to start the night.
Get the champagne out boys! PYW and The Father win Screenplay. This night is starting out GREAT.
Pretty happy with both winners thus far, especially for The Father. Didn't love Promising Young Woman like others, but at the very least this means Chicago 7 won't win Best Picture now.
Love that they chose the dancing scene for Another Round when showcasing Internation Feature.
What a life indeed.
Louis’s Best Picture choice lines up with Best International Feature for the second year in a row.
What a beautiful speech.
Going to be tough to top that one speech wise, heartbreaking.
Kaluuya wins, great performance even if leading.
Kaluuya may have won for Supporting, but he LEAD his film to an Oscar win...
I'll see myself out.
Kaluuya’s speech was amazing too. They’re really nailing these speeches this year.
I like how they’ve been letting the winners so far fully deliver their speeches instead of having a band cutting/playing them off.
Ma Rainey takes makeup, hopefully this is the weakest win of the night.
Louis: Is Ma Rainey near the bottom of your ranking of Makeup/Hairstyle winners?
And Costumes, far more deserving of that one.
Emi Grant:
It's definitely down there.
Congratulations to oldest ever Academy Award winner, Ann Roth!!
*pretends to be shocked*
Zhao, best choice since...Bong, but really a great choice.
HISTORIC
Congratulations Zhao and loved to see Bong and Sharon again.
Great speech as well.
Strange how they presented Director so early, but whatever. I'm very happy for Zhao.
Who’d have thought, letting people finish their speeches results in...great speeches.
Aidan:
I think they knew it was a forgone conclusion.
Sound of Metal takes sound, amazing winner again.
Louis: Good point.
Oh, and Sound of Metal taking sound is obviously great. Very well deserved.
Riz Ahmed got to present the award as well, which is nice.
They’re giving every category a sense of importance tonight, as it should be.
I'll live with Zhao winning. Glad for Sound of Metal.
No-brainer win for Sound of Metal. One of the best-ever winners in that category.
i overslept. You mean they already did Director?!
Great choice for Animated Short.
Tim: Indeed they did.
You must love Reese now
Soul takes animated feature deservedly (though I wouldn't have minded a Wolfwalkers upset).
Wait why isn’t Kemp Powers onstage?
*The Secret of NIMH gets shouted on a huge broadcast. Louis‘s ears perk up.*
*Cries in Wolfwalkers*
Calvin:
For some reason he wasn't counted as a nominee for the film.
Bryan:
Naturally.
Louis: That kind of sucks. I know it isn’t a limit on the number of people cause Spider-Verse had four recipients I think.
Shorts, so hard to predict as usual.
Calvin:
Yeah usually the directors and producers share the prize, not sure why Powers was excluded...though he's sometimes listed as a co-director and sometimes he's not.
Congrats to Colette.
I mean all signs pointed to it, I should've predicted it. But My Octopus Teacher? Really?
Meh Octopus.
Tenet Visuals. No complaints.
Youn wins
So happy for Youn, a terrific winner all around.
Oh, thank fuck. I was wrong. Wanted Seyfried myself, but good for Youn.
*Everyone breathes a sigh of relief*
Youn is an amazing winner, and thank the good lord, no Close "makeup" win.
Youn fuccking YEAH!
Lovely lovely speech as well.
BEST SPEECH
Mank's best element (production design) wins, deservedly I would say.
Super deserved
Papamichael finds this way of presenting as weird as i do
Mank wins best cinematography...less deserving (though not bad)...also hmmm regarding best picture
Eh fuck this.
Mank wins cinematography was a surprise. But you can't say it's an injustice and Messerschmidt's work is a great tribute to Gregg Toland'
Not sure how much Mank's cinematography win actually matters. I'm chalking it up to black-and-white bias.
I don't think it matters much, but just a pretty weak choice out of the nominees.
I'll rejoice on Mank's cinematography win, personally. If there was one category where I was hoping it'd best Nomadland, it was that one.
Sound of Metal takes editing.
The more love for Sound of Metal, the better.
I'm just happy Sound of Metal took Editing because this probably means Chicago 7 wins nothing.
To think Chicago 7 went from one of the favorites to the one that will walk away empty-handed...
To which I say, ‘The whole world’s watching!!’
Now the point is: is Nomadland winning Picture with only directing? Chicago 7 won nothing. PYW has screenplay. I don't think any onther film can take it. Maybe it means McDormand is taking actress...? Or is PYW winning Picture?
These prizes for Mank (cinematography) and The Father (screenplay) added a big question mark on this ceremony.
I didn't think they let people masturbate on live TV, but judging by Tyler Perry's speech, I guess they do.
Soul wins Score of course
Soul for Score, exceptional choice, even with Minari there.
Trenticuss Roznor strike again. This is a win I'm happy for.
Fight For you?...interesting.
Sad to see One Night in Miami go winless.
Fight For You is ok for me
What is this lmao. I'm glad if they're enjoying themselves though.
They didn't show clips for Screenplay or Effects for *that*
Why did I enjoy that
Yeah I'll say this production wise has had some "choices" to be sure, but hey compared to the Globes this is a masterwork.
well this was insanely rushed ...
Frankly disrespectful, should've cut Howery's bit.
Weird song choice, but seeing those names In Memoriam hit hard.
I’m with Tim, that In Memoriam felt downright disrespectful.
Best Picture? The Hell?
Wait wait wait...Best Picture right now?
What a weird ceremony. Individual great moments but what a mess overall.
I’m so confused. And dizzy.
This is "The Room" of oscar ceremonies and I don't know how I feel about tha.
Maybe Best Actor is last and they want to end the ceremony on a high note by commemorating Chadwick Boseman? Idk.
I mean Best Picture has always been last, no one has ever complained about that...why.
Anyway good for Nomadland.
*pretends to be shocked*
Ehh... does anyone know what happened with Actor and Actress, though? Are they coming out later?
Apparently they are, never mind.
Nomadland, congratulations! And so weird to see Frances McDormand around, just being her usual self, love it.
Mr. Soderbergh, what are you doing?
Matt:
Bad editing like usual.
Called it!
Frances
McDormand wins.
McDormand wins, honestly my favorite of the lineup.
Although wish Mulligan could've taken it, still a great winner.
I really wanted Mulligan tho...
Wow, real surprise. Great choice, nevertheless. Congrats 4 time Oscar winner Frances McDormand!
Hopkins! Damn, i should have bet some money ...
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS....also you get what you deserve Soderbergh.
Anthony Hopkins Final!
Woah woah woah...Hopkins?
HOPKINS WOOOOONNNNN AAAAHHHH YESSSSS
What a weird way to end the ceremony. Congrats Hopkins.
Louis: Best winner since...?
Calvin:
Perhaps they should've ended with...hmmm best picture?
Theory: The Academy knew that everyone else expected Nomadland to win Best Picture, so they showed Best Actor/Actress at the very end for the SUSPENSE.
Emi Grant:
F. Murray Abraham....aka my favorite performance of all time.
Louis: Agreed, I feel like it would've played out much better to end on a Nomadland BP speech.
By the way, Hopkins, McDormand, Youn and Kaluuya is one of the strongest winner quartet's of all time. Even greater than 07 I'd say.
