10. John Cusack in Map to the Stars - Cusack might actually play his part too low key as he isn't able to overcome the weaknesses of his film.
Best Scene: Reaction to the fire.
9. Sam Claflin in Riot Club - Claflin is properly despicable but not much more than that.
Best Scene: Club at its worst.
8. Chris Pine Stretch in Pine is a whole lot of something, not quite sure what, but it is definitely something worth seeing.
Best Scene: Ending.
7. Irrfan Khan in Haider - Khan brings the right haunting quality and delivers the right impact in his brief screentime.
Best Scene: What happened.
6. Ricardo Darin in Wild Tales - Darin depicts an appropriate mental descent from dealing with the insanity of bureaucracy.
Best Scene: Losing it.
5. Taika Waititi in What We Do in the Shadows - Waititi gives an amusing performance by always being just so genteel as his vampire.
Best Scene: Wearing the pendant.
4. Michael Parks in Tusk - Parks is a far greater than his terrible film in his properly deranged turn as a walrus aficionado.
Best Scene: Doesn't need a wheelchair.
3. Damián Alcázar in The Perfect Dictatorship - He manages to be both hilarious and menacing as a politician who in no way hides the shame of his corruption.
Best Scene: Threatening "suicide".
2. Matthias Schoenaerts in The Drop - Schoenaerts gives a terrific portrayal of a wannabe threat in more ways than one.
Best Scene: "I killed Richie Wheeling"
1. Shia LaBeouf in Fury - Good predictions Anonymous, Robert, Tim, Maciej, and Emi Grant. LaBeouf delivers a performance worthy of a great war film. He's in Fury, but nonetheless LaBeouf gives it his all as a man scarred by war.
Best Scene: "Send me"
Updated Overall
Next: 1966 lead.

Huh, Brolin takes the win. Interesting.
Honestly can’t complain about the choice of winner.
Should probably rewatch Inherent Vice, because Brolin didn’t stick with me like I thought he would. Glad to see Hawke is in the top 10 at least.
Damn, I was really hoping for a Ruffalo upgrade more than anything. The Brolin victory is definitely a welcome surprise though.
Rating and thoughts for Ben Whishaw in Lilting?
Oh damn that’s another Whishaw film that’s gone under the radar for me. Added to the watchlist.
Per Oscarsson, Hunger
Eddie Axberg, Here Is Your Life
Anatoly Solonitsyn, Andrei Rublev
Lino Ventura, Le deuxième souffle
Donald Pleasance, Cul-de-Sac
Sergey Bondarchuk, War and Peace
Shoichi Ozawa, The Pornographers
Max von Sydow, Hawaii
Per Oscarsson, My Sister, My Love
Rock Hudson, Seconds
Jack Nicholson, The Shooting
Jack Nicholson & Cameron Mitchell, Ride in the Whirlwind
Sean Connery, A Fine Madness
Roddy McDowall, Lord Love a Duck
I’d honestly be fine with the five requests for 1966 lead as the full lineup. It’s a really solid group on its own.
I second that.
Slightly surprised by Brolin taking the win (was hoping for Simmons, but my gut instinct is always wrong when it comes to that lol). Not unhappy though, he was also great.
I’ve only seen Pleasance from those recs and he’s definitely worth a review. Looking forward to watching the others, 1966 is a very bare year for me.
Louis, My request is Paul Newman in Harper.
1966 Lead
Eddie Axberg - Here Is Your Life
Per Oscarsson - Hunger
Anatoly Solonitsyn - Andrei Rublev
David Warner - Morgan - A Suitable Case For Treatment
Donald Pleasence - Cul-De-Sac
Rock Hudson - Seconds
Paul Newman - Harper
Lino Ventura/Paul Meurisse - Le Deuxième Souffle
Lee Van Cleef - The Big Gundown
Louis: If not 10, could you do 7/8 with Ventura and Meurisse.
Louis: your thoughts on Big Hero 6?
I would like Hudson or Van Cleef as well but I'd rather you see them first to determine whether they are truly great or not.
Louis: Your reasoning for the switch to Brolin.
Thoughts on 300: Rise Of An Empire, Big Hero 6, The Salvation and Black Sea with ratings and thoughts on the casts.
Your ratings and thoughts on the other lead performances you've seen.
Your updated top 20s in Female Lead and Supporting.
Louis: And lastly, is Duncan a 4.5 or 5 for Birdman.
A Man and a Woman-trintignant
Nayak-Kumar
Oscarsson-Sult
Axberg-here Is your life
Louis: And put David Warner in the extras, I think he'll only be a 4.
Thoughts on Aaron Paul in Exodus: Gods and Kings?
Guys, I sincerely hope Pleasence gets a five for Cul-De-Sac.
Luke: Don't you mean "Thoughts on 600"? :)
Bryan: My bad. :)
Louis, your rating and thoughts on Cheng Pei-pei in Lilting.
Omg my first win :) i had this slight fear it might never happen.
my request is an Alternate Best Actor 2004
Leigh Whannell in SAW
Little trivia: due to Budget constrains that movie was shot incredibly fast, they always had one try for every take and that would be in the movie. It`s essentially a film of rehearsal takes.
The acting is … inconsistent? Yeah, that puts it well. But goddammit, i love that scream in the end.
So yeah, i think you might have fun with that one
Louis: If all ten spots for 2004 lead are filled and Considine & Murray aren't among them, could you review them while doing Supporting like you did with Cruise the last time because I personally can't wait much longer for them, especially Considine.
I'd be fine if Murray ends up winning the overall for 2004, actually. It might be my favourite performance of his.
Tim: That is such a waste of a review, come on.
My winning request is Vincent Gallo in Essential Killing
Eddie Axberg - Here Is Your Life
Per Oscarsson - Hunger
Anatoly Solonitsyn - Andrei Rublev
David Warner - Morgan - A Suitable Case For Treatment
Donald Pleasence - Cul-De-Sac
Bonus
Rock Hudson - Seconds
Max Von Sydow - Hawaii
Paul Newman - Harper
Louis: I think I won this line-up too. The one with Labeouf, Alcázar and Parks.
Matt: I won't wind the 'Saw' review as long as Louis assures me that he will do Murray and Considine during 2004 no matter what.
And it'll probably be the only way to get Louis to watch it.
I second Rock Hudson in Seconds. 5 star performance in my view
Louis: I changed my mind, do 10. You'll only have to watch 9 films anyway.
I bet this is actually all just an elaborate plan to make sure Louis watches the entire Saw franchise, lol. How else will he get to witness the greatest light bulb of all time on Saw 2?
That said, I've always wanted to see Louis' thoughts on Tobin Bell.
*Matt: I won't mind the 'Saw' review as long as Louis assures me that he will do Murray and Considine during 2004 no matter what.
In the end he won the request. Does it really matter if we mind or not?
John: He's free to it as he pleases. Matt has more of a problem with it than I do.
Yes! Paul Thomas Anderson is another director who gave victories for best lead actor and supporting actor on Louis' blog.
I liked the change of the winner. Louis is to be congratulated!
Calvin:
I found Big Hero 6 to be enjoyable enough. I should note I also watched "When Marnie Was There" and "Song of the Sea" and I liked them well enough, but it's year why I don't do best animated feature. Big Hero 6 I think is more fun with just some of sciency stuff so to speak, as I found the plot aggressively standard, though fine in being so standard. Enjoyable enough but not great.
Luke:
Brolin gave my favorite performance.
No 5's in supporting actress.
600 - (Green is a hoot but the film just feels like a waste of time as no one else seems to particularly care, and the action scenes just aren't particularly well conceived.)
Stapleton - 1(Block of wood, makes Gerard Butler look like a positively dynamic actor in comparison. Should've just had David Wenham be the main hero instead of just sort of wasting him.)
Santoro - (His Xerxes is still ridiculous, although his flashback reaction moment is the best acting in either film, not much still.)
Green - 4.5(Her performance is the only performance that really thinks anything is worthwhile about the film, as she's having a blast and it is a blast to watch her here. She throws herself into every scene to try to make it work as something, and she doesn't entirely fail. When she's on screen the film kind of works as she's such a dynamic presence and creates a good villain even if wasted in such a film.)
The Salvation - (Has some decent moments, a strong central turn, but it just is very flimsy in terms of structure. It has sort of the parts for a compelling narrative but they're put together in such a sloppy way.)
Mikkelsen - 4(Just a rock solid leading turn. The film kind makes it so he's missing important parts from his performance, in that it basically skips over them, but he still makes a compelling western lead.)
Morgan - 3(Fine at being an extremely standard villain.)
Pryce - 3(Fine at doing a bit of weasel work.)
Green - 3(Good in a severely underdeveloped character.)
Black Sea - (Decent enough "Treasure of Sierra Madre" riff (there's honestly been a lot of those the last few years), but not great to me by any means. It never really quite gets the hooks into creating the tension of the characters, fine but nothing special.)
Law - 3.5(A fine leading turn even though the film should've given his character just a bit more setup. Law though devotes himself to the role the best he can and does grant the right gravity within the character's personal story even if underdeveloped.)
Mendelsohn - 3.5(Although underused to a certain extent his performance though still creating the sort of wild card energy needed. It would also be easy to see a lesser actor go way over the top in the role, but Mendelsohn does well with what he has.)
McNairy - 3(Doing his best Paul Reiser impression he does a fine job with it.)
Whishaw - 4(A good performance from him as to be expected whenever he has something to work with. Whishaw embodies well the sense of the strange conflict within his character in creating the right sense of awkwardness in his interactions while struggling to really speak what he needs to speak in order to connect. He creates the right emotional sort of connection within the sense of that attempted connection.)
Maadi - 4(An effective turn in terms of just slowly revealing himself to be more than his initial hostility suggests. Maadi effectively makes the relationship believable with Stewart. This in slowly peeling away the different sort of mind tactics to reveal just a frustrated and angry man, who was probably entirely decent at one time.)
Healy 3.5(Although the film felt a little, cheap (sorry), I'll say Healy does a fine job in sort of conveying the emotional desperation and intensity that stems from the insanity of the situation that just slowly gets out of control.)
Marandi - 3(A director's film, a film which I liked its atmosphere however found it too slow going overall, Marandi gives a fine turn in just being part of that tapestry though not really break away from it.)
Abkarian - 3(Not really his show however he is effective in creating the sense of the quiet bitterness and vindictiveness of the man throughout.)
