Ratings and thoughts on the rest of the 4.5 & 4s.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: And the 3.5s. Especially the 1917 cameos.

I guess none of us got it, then. Oh well..nice to see "The Irishman" duo reigning supreme - they really deserve it this year.

Also, small nit pick here...Chalamet over Downey Jr? I just don't see it. Sorry to all of you who adored his work...I really don't mean to be a stickler because I did like his performance, I just didn't love it.

Louis: Thoughts on Bacarau, Booksmart, The Mustang, Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil And Vile & Light Of My Life with ratings and thoughtd on the casts.

Luke Higham said...

And with the Lead Lineup, all of your fives.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Anyway, for actor

Robert Dr Niro in The Irishman
Kelvin Harrison Jr. in Waves
Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems
Aaron Paul in El Camino

At least those are the four I want the most.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: And do save Mullan for a future review, however you can give thoughts on him though.

Bryan L. said...

Luke: He gave thoughts on Light of my Life in Antonio Banderas' review, Affleck & Pnioswky in Drivers', and Bower & Moss in the Best Actor results.

Calvin Law said...

My 10 suggestions:

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson, The Lighthouse
Adam Sandler, Uncut Gems
George MacKay, 1917
Roman Griffin Davis, Jojo Rabbit
August Diehl, A Hidden Life
Robert De Niro, The Irishman
Matthias Schoenaerts, The Mustang
Kelvin Harrison Jr., Waves
Aaron Paul, Rocketman

And technically I'd like to see one for Egerton but since I think he'll be a 4.5 at best, then a double Noah Jupe/Shia LaBeouf review.

Luke Higham said...

Bryan: I was actually thinking of that Bruce Springsteen film, Blinded By The Light, My bad.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: If you're doing the 2 double reviews(The Lighthouse and Honey Boy), please just this once do 6 per prediction just so you won't spoil who your favourite from the former is.

Bryan L. said...

Luke: It's all good :)

Wow, Rafe Spall almost "won" a back-to-back Supporting "loss".

These are the 5 I want to see the most:

Dafoe/Pattinson - The Lighthouse
Aaron Paul - El Camino
Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
Christian Bale - Ford v Ferrari
Robert De Niro - The Irishman

Louis: Did you give your ratings on the leads from Booksmart?

Omar Franini said...

Louis: glad to see you liked Kier in Bacurau! Your rating and thoughts on Braga?

Psifonian said...

Dafoe/Pattinson
Anyone but De Niro

Luke Higham said...

Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson - The Lighthouse
Noah Jupe and Shia LaBeouf - Honey Boy
Adam Sandler - Uncut Gems
George MacKay - 1917
Roman Griffin Davis - Jojo Rabbit
August Diehl - A Hidden Life
Robert De Niro - The Irishman
Matthias Schoenaerts - The Mustang
Kelvin Harrison Jr. - Waves (and Luce, if you have the time)
Aaron Paul - El Camino

Luke Higham said...

Uh oh, wonder how this will pan out.

Bryan L. said...

Honestly, I don't really think Diehl needs to get reviewed. He's good, but I was more impressed by Pachner. That's my two cents though.

Luke Higham said...

Louis and Calvin: True History of The Kelly Gang is online.

Calvin Law said...

Strongly disagree. Pachner's performance doesn't work without Diehl's work and vice versa.

Calvin Law said...

Luke: I'm waiting until it hits cinemas in February. 2020 releases can wait. I'm going to try and get to Bacurau (which I've kept promising Omar to get to), and The Art of Self Defence first.

Luke:

Kier - (He may have my single favorite line delivery of 2019 with his "hell no" when inquiring about his shot choices. Kier's performance is this brilliant strange thing of a comic indifference and emotional desperation. Kier's work manages to create the bizarre sense of his character's peculiar form of insanity that is always fascinating to watch. Kier is pretty much effortlessly compelling presence to begin with, but he's quite welcome in what is a meatier role for him. His portrayal of this "big game" hunter has a strangely captivating quality to it, as there is the way he does everything as though everything is both meaningless and the most important thing to him in his particularly questionable crusade.)

Madden - (Well his performance works in the way he instantly evokes the connection between the brothers just through his quick bit of enthusiasm of hearing about his brother, that he segues towards immediate heartbreak. Madden reveals this so powerfully and vivid, in portraying the repression of tears of the soldier trying to keep it together, yet not quite being able to. It's an incredibly moving performance that also earns sort of his spot as the final revelation that is not all wasted.)

Cumberbatch - (I mean the part Cumberbatch was always going to have to play eventually, now wasn't he, but either way he certain delivers on the promise of this. This with the refined ferocity as he speaks his orders and initially rejects the idea that anything could go wrong with his plan. I love his final few seconds of teetering towards a minor humanity in his slightly tired way of saying "attack at dawn" but then the fierce striking nihilism he delivers with "last man standing" that is also one of my favorite line deliveries of 2019.)

Dern - (I love seeing Dern just quite simply, and I'm glad so many directors are still casting him. He gets to do a bit more here than his other performances from 2019 and doesn't waste that fact. This with just how much character he can bring to the old coot with the sort of rough intensity Dern of course can always bring, but with balanced moments of warmth that are rather nicely implemented in his work.)

Bacurau, I guess is just one to say watch for yourself, as I had no idea what was going on with it. This is partially a criticism however as just like Filho's previous film Aquarius, I thought it became quite compelling once it got going, but took abnormally long to take shape of what it appeared to be about. Now this is clearly a style on his part, however the seeming aimlessness of the first act once again becomes a little too aimless for too long, even though it does become quite memorable once it gets going.

The Mustang is a fine, though not great, character study that is really best in just having the moments between Schoenaerts and the horses. It doesn't do anything unexpected but it is a fine rendition of what you expect it to be.

Louis Morgan said...

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile is one where I go "What's the point?". This as even though its central conceit is the actual loving relationship of Bundy with his girlfriend however this is only explored for a bit, then basically a time filler between the trial scenes until just the last scene. The problem is the film just doesn't seem to have anything to say about that relationship or Bundy to give the film any purpose.

Efron - 4(I will say his casting actually did pay off. This is a good performance from him in the way he is able to put on the charming act even as there is a darkness within his eyes that alludes to the brutality of the man we never fully see. Efron though is able to capture the detachment of the crimes, along with the slick manner of the man that tricked so many. It's a shame that the screenplay nor the director have anything interesting to really do with Efron's compelling performance on its own.)

Collins - 3.5(Really the extra .5 is for her final scene where she is legitimately great in portraying the release of emotional desperation and anguish over her relationship. The rest of the film though she's so poorly written she's just sort of there. Collins does what she can honestly, there's just basically nothing for her to do.)

Osment - 3(He's fine in providing a bit of warmth.)

Parsons - 2.5(Not bad honestly, but doesn't do much.)

Malkovich - 3(Technically extremely miscast in a role that should've gone to Stephen Root, however Malkovich finds his own ways with the words rather than trying to reflect the judge he's playing, and is effective in playing it as this sardonic intellectual even if some of things doesn't make much sense for a Malkovich type.)

I don't buy that USA date on imdb, so it's 2020 anyways. Speaking of release dates I did finish The Nightengale, which was a whole lot of...stuff. There are some great things in there to be sure, however overall I might classify it as mess in how it realizes itself particularly Sam Claflin's character that is so evil that it becomes straight up comical, but I don't think that was intentional. I couldn't confirm really that the Milan release was non-festival related, so its in a gray area still for me.

Emi Grant:

No I did not.

Dever & Feldstein - 4/3.5(I will admit the film itself was one where I was ready to not care for it at all in its half hour, thankfully it calms down and got better from there. Each are effective here in their own ways. Dever gives very much the more overtly dramatic turn and she does this well. This creating the growing sense of awkwardness of each of her situations with the combination of desire with a penetrating shyness and inexperience. Feldstein seemed to be very much working with her brother's playbook as very much felt like him a lot here. She is good though in her more overtly comic turn though, with some fine moments of the slightly more dramatic mainly in her chemistry with Dever. There are her best moments, and are the films, where they're together that offer a bit of depth among the hi-jinks.)

Omar:

Braga - 4(I liked her performance here in very disappearing into the role of the sort kooky and mysterious woman. Brage of course is always great at intensity, and that is the case here, though she wields it a bit differently than usual. This in her performance creating a strange sense of logic within her character. My favorite moment of hers is probably with Kier just as the two manage probably to each have their most low key moment, however are both quite effective in realizing that.)

Lucas:

1. Dude playing a dude disguised as another dude - Tropic Thunder
2. Asking his dad for help - Less Than Zero
3. Chaplin's Audition - Chaplin
4. Physical breakdown - Less Than Zero
5 .Watching the tape - Captain America: Civil War
6. The Audition - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
7. Talking to the little girl - Less Than Zero
8. Returning home after the fire - Restoration
9. "I am Iron Man" - Iron Man
10. "Never go full retard" - Tropic Thunder
11. Going back - Less Than Zero
12. Talking to Howard Stark - Avengers; Endgame
13. Saving the Day - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
14. Chaplin's sees his old films play - Chaplin
15. Personal argument with Cap - Captain America: Civil War
16. houseboat - Zodiac
17. Bringing his mom hope - Chaplin
18. Personal letter - Zodiac
19. In bed - Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
20. Peter's goodbye - Avengers: Infinity War

In my opinion, here are the must haves for the lead lineup:

Dafoe/Pattinson
Sandler
De Niro
Schoenaerts
Harrison (for Waves, though ideally tie in a review for Luce as well)

To round out the ten, uhhhh I guess:

Paul
Bale
Egerton
Mullan
Kaluuya

Totally fine with me if Davis and/or MacKay sneak in.

Luke:

Franciosi - 5(Honestly here is a revenge performance I had never seen before, or anything like. This as her performance did not suddenly deliver some confidence that would not be fitting of the character, but rather she keeps with the character before and afterwards. Her initial scenes are very good in bringing definitely a powerful grace in each of singing scenes, but also offers the right sort of reality in her interactions. She doesn't make her Clare in reality an untouchable angel even as she is viewed by some as such when performing. After what happens, happens, which she makes extra hard to watch through the visceral power of her performance, her portrayal is remarkable. This in that she delivers the emotional drive and intensity as to be expected. She though also offers still a desperation of someone constantly suffering even as she conveys too a sense of determination. Her first kill scene is brilliantly performed by her as she delivers such a brutality herself, before having the moment of clarity that is heartbreaking. Her work I think does rise above the film, which I do think gets repetitive in its brutality as well as has a villain problem, but her performance is something special.)

Ganambarr - 4.5(His performance is terrific as the best parts of the film are the non-violent ones largely between him and Franciosi. They share an effective chemistry in showing the gradual understanding between the two that does feel earned, by how hard each makes it honestly. Ganambarr himself gives a striking turn in portraying what is a low key charm that presents well, and even some needed bit of any humor in his reactions initially to Clare. He's great though in realizing his own moments of deep trauma and pain, that he slowly reveals itself in his performance, until it explodes in his final sequence. It's a strong performance and honestly I would've preferred the film if we had left to just seeing what he and Franciosi were doing and less of...)

Claflin - (I honestly don't know to fully rate him here, as it's not entirely his fault. Everything his character does is so evil and so over the top in that sense, that it become comical in so many scenes because of just how ridiculous the character is in his vile acts. I suppose Claflin doesn't help things with his sneers in each moment that too are a bit ridiculous and don't help matter. It would've been difficult to make this character work no matter what, just because how thick the story lays on his wicked ways, but Claflin doesn't make things better.)

Louis: Is Ganambarr Lead or Supporting, if he's the latter and you did decide to classify the flm as 2019, where would you rank him.

Only asking because I constantly have to update the 5s & 4.5s list that I created on Google Docs.

He'd be my #8, in supporting. I would've had him in the lineup if it hadn't been for the release date snafu.

Louis: Where would you place/rank Keanu Reeves in Toy Story 4 for the overall supporting actor performances list? I don’t see him on the list.

Anyone watched the Rumble? That was the damnedest Claymore I've ever seen.

Diehl and MacKay are MUSTS for lead actor. The most underrated lead performances of the year.

Louis: Since Peter Weir seems to be retired, would you like to see Sam Mendes take a crack at any Master & Commander sequels if they ever come to fruition? Plus, Russell Crowe seems to be a good fit for a Mendes lead, as both are great at the epic.

Razor:

Steven Soderbergh continues to keep his style toned a bit more, particularly in terms of his visual use once again, not that it is amazing in that regard, though he still annoys me with his sound mixing once again. The script here is basically another, expose, though more character driven here than the Laundromat. It never becomes that compelling, partially due to Soderbergh's direction, but more so as the script is okay in creating a basic scenario however doesn't do anything truly interesting with it.

Holland - 3.5(He's more than fine in bringing both a desperation and certain attempted slick edge as the agent type. There's more development that could've been as written but overall Holland does a fine job in creating the style of the man even as he remains a distant protagonist.)

Beetz - 3(She's fine in delivering a bit of character to his role, but doesn't really make much of an impression overall.)

Sohn - 3(She deliver a nice minor comical energy to her performance that nicely adds a bit to her character that is involved in a lot of exposition.)

MacLachlan - 3(A fine portrayal of a slimeball, though not too notable from him.)

Duke - 3(Enjoyable enough as sort of a slightly curmudgeonly coach.)

Gregg - 3(Absolutely fine in bringing a minor goofy energy, but nothing too remarkable.)

Bryan:

I could see Mendes working there.

Anonymous:
