Terence Stamp I think is an easy easy easy winner, he was both chilling and sympathetic at the same time (hot too) , Sharif was good but not great compared to Steiger and Courtenay who were better, Connery was great, havnt seen Caine or Van Cleef.
I've seen only Sharif and Van Cleef. Yes, Van Cleef is co-lead with Eastwood in A Few Dollars More, but in my personal awards I consider him in supporting category... where is my winner.
I've seen only Van Cleef and Sharif - both were good but nothing really spectacular. I'd personaly place the former in supporting category, but then again, he could be easily considered the lead.
Two great choices re: Van Cleef: 1) to review him and 2) to place him in lead. To me, he's definitely a lead; indeed, in many ways he is the central protagonist of the film. And I think he's brilliant in it: believable and subtle.
The only other performance of this five that I've seen is Sharif, so this is pure guesswork as to what you will go with:

@mrripley - Nope he wasnt nominated, it was very surprising, I guess they didnt like nominating Villains in the 60s.
