Best Actor 2025: Results

5. Michael B. Jordan in Sinners - Jordan effectively carries his film in two separate ways one through charisma and one through stoic conviction.

Best Scene: Epilogue.
4. Ethan Hawke in Blue Moon - Hawke gives his most showoff performance to date, and I found it largely effective as the showoff yet sorrowful Lorenz Hart.

Best Scene: Argument with Rodgers.
3. Wagner Moura in The Secret Agent - Moura gives a subdued and moving depiction essentially of one normal man trying to live in a mad time.

Best Scene: Testimony
2. Leonardo DiCaprio in One Battle After Another - DiCaprio delivers one of his best performances that manages to be both a very funny and moving journey from revolutionary to burnout dad.

Best Scene: In the car with Sensei.
1. Timothée Chalamet in Marty Supreme - Good predictions Kevin, Robert, Tim & John Smith. Chalamet is a live wire of cinematic charisma in delivering a captivating yet challenging depiction of one man's ego and ambition.

Best Scene: Final game.
Next: 2025 alternate supporting.

Other than Crowe, Jupe, O'Connell and the Marty Supreme ensemble, I'm not fussed on who you choose for the lineup.

Louis: I feel like for the most part we are living in a timeline where the acting nominees are generally quite good, I can't imagine how angry we would have been if we were doing this in the 1940s covering the line-ups (in like a newspaper office rather than this blog),

Watching the Oscar ticker tape come in for 1944. "They didn't nominate Edward G. Robinson for Double Indemnity but they nominated Barry Fitzgerald twice for the same performance? WTF!!!!".

Gah, I overestimated Moura.

Louis: your ranking of all 20 nominated performances this year?

Ytrewq Wertyq said...

Almost every one of us stepped onto Moura hype train, which then went off the rails.

“Edward G. Robinson hive, it’s so over…😭”

And ya, I can imagine ourselves laughing mad at how hilariously lopsided 1945 lineup was in favor of Ray Milland.

Outside of Jupe, two I wouldn't mind seeing upgraded/reviewed are Hoult in Superman and Ehrenreich in Weapons. Otherwise, don't care that much.

Huh, I almost definitely thought just by the length of reviews, Moura would be ahead of DiCaprio, but I guess you never know.

I kind of hope you'll consider Charlie Plummer, though I'm not sweating over it.

Luke: Your rating predictions for the Supporting lineup?

Luke Higham said...

A: I'm predicting fives for Crowe, Jupe and O'Connell (Surely someone from the cast will get a five) and 4.5s for the rest.

Luke: Your rating predictions for Alternate Lead?

Luke Higham said...

5s for Hoffman/Jonsson, Plemons, Edgerton, Lee, O'Connor, Aramayo and Mescal, 4.5s for the rest.

Tybalt said...

Luke: Do you still stand by your earlier prediction that this year will break the record for the largest number of 5s in Lead?

Luke Higham said...

Tybalt: Obviously not. I probably had a little too much faith in Hawke getting it especially even after Robert wasn't terribly keen on him.

Calvin Law said...

‘Moura hype train which then went off the rails’ he still got a 5 didn’t he? Jeez lol

Anyway, for suggestions:

Jack O’Connell in Sinners
Tahar Rahim in Alpha
Conan O’Brien in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You

And hey, if you happen to have a possibility of raising Ralph Fiennes in 28 Years Later, why not.

Matt Mustin said...

Yeah I just thought he'd do better than DiCaprio. Don't know why, I just did.

Jack O'Connell in Sinners
John Leguizamo in Bob Trevino Likes It
William H. Macy in Train Dreams
Conan O’Brien in If I Had Legs I’d Kick You
Jacobi Jupe in Hamnet
Lewis Pullman in The Testament of Ann Lee

Tbh, I didn't exactly get on the Moura hype train as much as I underestimated DiCaprio. Guess you can't quite count him out yet.

I'm looking forward to Macy and O'Connell in supporting. Maybe the Supreme boys too just 'cause Tyler, The Creator getting a review on this blog would be AMAZING.

Calvin: Well I stated the above in a bit overexaggerated way, but seeing all the praise coming from everywhere made me think that he was going to end up as #2 in overall or something.

Michael McCarthy said...

I’m usually pretty good about not getting on the “most fives EVER” bandwagon, but this year I managed to get caught up in it after all. I found myself really connecting with all five of these guys though, so I’ll stand by it.

All 5's lineups are nice, but as long as all the nominees and winners are deserving (which seems to be the case in both Lead and Supporting), that's all I really care about.

There's been far fewer superfluous/mediocre nominees the past decade, which were pretty much the norm if we go back and see the early supporting actor lineups of say, the 40s lol.

Tim said...

i also predicted this underneath DiCaprio

Harris Marlowe said...

I'd advocate for Leguizamo and Fiennes getting reviewed. And if you decide not to include Fiennes as part of the lineup, would you at least consider rewatching 28YL before the results?

Oliver Menard said...

Not that excited for Alternate Supporting, Alternate Lead is where it's at this year. As much as Louis loved Chalamet he doesn't feel an undisputed winner. Previous years it was obvious that Farrell, Brody and Murphy for example were winning their years but I really think Lee is going to take it.
