Best Scene: Failing texts.
9. August Diehl in A Hidden Life - Although limited by the choices of his director, Diehl does give a powerful portrayal of a deep familial affection and conviction of one's beliefs.
Best Scene: Speaking to the judge.
8. Roman Griffin Davis in Jojo Rabbit - Davis gives a hilarious portrayal of a boy's foolish fanaticism, and a moving portrayal of slow maturation built around love.
Best Scene: Red shoes.

Best Scene: Duel.
6. Robert De Niro in The Irishman - De Niro delivers for much of the film as the reactionary/observant lead, that helps to realize the masterful work of his co-stars, however too makes his own remarkable impact in his heartbreaking realization of a different kind of epilogue for a gangster film.
Best Scene: Not quite a confession.
5. Shia LaBeouf in Honey Boy - LaBeouf gives an incredible raw realization of a portrait of essentially his own father, that is a powerful depiction of both desperate need and a pathetic envy in in his relationship with his son.
Best Scene: AA speech.
4. George MacKay in 1917 - MacKay gives a brilliant "in the moment" performance that rarely ever stops moving, yet makes every sequence of the film all the more vivid, while also never failing to realize his soldier as a man.
Best Scene: River of death to salvation.
3. Adam Sandler in Uncut Gems - Sandler delivers an extraordinary turn in creating such an effortlessly captivating and intense depiction of a man with a singular obsession that rules his existence.
Best Scene: Final game.
1. Willem Dafoe & Robert Pattinson in The Lighthouse - Good prediction moviefilm, Jack Narrator, Omar and Toan Nguyen. Together Dafoe and Pattinson deliver two masterful turns that craft a unique tone and fashion such idiosyncratic characters of another era. This capturing their journeys within both the mythical mania and a more human desperation. Typically I am conflicted over deciding such winners, however have currently a strange contentment regarding a tie for Dafoe and Pattinson, as I love their work equally, and both thrive within their dynamic, disturbing and even hilarious chemistry with one another.

Jojo beating Little Women is my supervillain origin story. Bleh.
Bong's got his Oscar. I can go to bed happy tonight. Jojo's a great choice for Adapted as well. And yeah, that scene they picked for the Joker summed it up perfectly.
Hollywood wins production design, hard to go wrong in that category, so a deserving win even if I would've loved a 1917 or Parasite upset.
Good choice for production design though not my preference.
You know something guys, I just revisited Pitt's tripping out scene, and I'm even more happy for him winning now. The main reason is that as far as supporting actor winners go, he really is unlike any we've had in the century thus far. His performance is of course comedic in nature, of which the only other winners to compare it to would be Arkin, both of Waltz's wins, possibly Cooper and Bale (though both have more elements to their work), and Rockwell sort of. Even then, its that kind of breezy, goofy comedy none of those aforementioned men have in their work. Maybe its a little to early to make this comparison, but its kind of similar to Kevin Kline's win for "A Fish Called Wanda" in that its SO not the kind of portrayal the oscars usually go for.
So yah...I really like Pitt's win, and I'll stand by that for the mean time.
Little Women wins costumes unsurprisingly, but well deserved.
Deserving win for Hollywood even if it's not on the same level as 1917 and Parasite.
Louis: That also makes me feel good knowing "Little Women" has at least one win, and didn't follow in the footsteps of "Lady Bird".
American Factory wins doc, a fine win.
Good documentary choice!
I'm happy Little Women is going down as an Oscar winner. And American Factory is a very good choice for documentary win.
Also side note, the montages for the acting nominees is actually a great idea from the Academy for once in terms of presentation.
Dern wins of course in her career win.
Amazing speech.
Oh how I wish I could be as thrilled about her win as I wanted to be...oh well, she's fine in the film. Not the best supporting actress winner ever, but certainly not the worst.
I’m also glad they decided to skip doing a single montage for EACH Best Picture nominee. I think we would’ve seen one by now, so here’s hoping I’m not jinxing it haha
Bryan:
Hopefully that is the case, as the ceremony is moving nicely so far...no host is the way to go.
Dern was alright, although i still can't understand anyone's love for her performance.
Eminem at the Oscars? I’m loving it.
Random...(I guess to make up for his no show when he won?), but I do like the song so whatever.
I’m just going to assume it was an intermission of sorts, but hey, it wasn’t bad.
It was worth it for that cut to Scorsese. I’m honestly really enjoying this evening, best since the 2016 Oscars.
Sound Editing upset Ford V Ferrari.
Looks like it might not be 1917’s night :(
Good choice though!
I'm not too surprised because Ford v Ferrari did win other sound awards this season. If it wasn't going to be 1917, it was going to be Ford v Ferrari.
1917 win for sound mix.
You know, the split at least shows some thought so, I appreciate that, especially compared to last year and both are well deserved.
Yes! Sound mixing. Also to be honest it’s good to see they do put thought into the distinction between the two categories.
I’m cool with the split to be honest. Plus, I get the feeling that they wanted to give 20th Century Fox at least one in their last go-around as themselves. Hope they only decided to do so for this one though.
1917 wins. Fantastic choice, now hope it wins more.
Can I just say that it is so weird so put someone so naturally funny like Julia Louis-Dreyfus next to someone so forced in it like Will Ferrell.
Deakins win #2, outstanding choice.
Roger Roger. Always love hearing him speak he has such a soothing voice.
Lame win Ford. V Ferrari for editing. Parasite was just too good of a choice I guess.
Decent choice I guess.
Yes a definite improvement over last year still, but the pacing was my major issue with that film.
Deakins win shows the Academy has some common sense, sadly they didn't use it for the editing category.
One of the best live performances at the Oscars ever.
Calvin:
Fantastic performance, and would be fine with an upset in Erivo's favor in song.
1917 for the win, great win, Irishman goes home empty handed.
YES 1917
1917 wins. I'm glad they went with the most deserving in the category. Still, a shame for the Irishman because in a lesser year that would be an easy Picture or Director winner.
Bombshell wins makeup, well deserved I will say.
It’s kind of funny how Vice and Bombshell won the same award and ONLY that one.
Also, the Academy is having a great run with these Visual Effects winners (First Man, BR: 2049)
Good on Bombshell. Cutting them off like that was awkward as hell though, we could’ve cut out that cats nonsense beforehand.
Parasite wins international feature. I say before the winner is announced.
Yes parasite!
Class act, that Bong.
‘I’m ready to drink tonight’ indeed Bong.
Wish Egerton had come along :( I guess was kind of expected since he wasn’t nominated.
Calvin:
Surprisingly a slightly disappointing performance.
Still easily the best of the songs though.
Matt:
No arguments there.
Bong is a national treasure
Well given the choice in presenters, Joker takes score.
Yep, poor Newman.
I can live with this. Although 1917 was still robbed.
Academy really screwed up Score this year BAD. The fact that Star Wars was nominated over Parasite and Joker beats out 1917 for the win is pathetic.
Hey they didn’t screw up Original Song at least!
Eh, it was Newman's best score in addition to him being overdue, so that is very annoying.
John and Taupin win, well deserved.
Good choice for original song! And happy to see them win.
BONGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Woah
HOLY SHIT!
Holy fuck
One of the best choices EVER!!!!!!! And Bong's class act continues.
LOVE that Scorsese shoutout
He deserves another Oscar for his speeches. Also, by the way it looks it's not 1917's night.
Don’t care what anyone says. I love Billie Eilish. And Kobe ❤️
George MacKay appears, Calvin's ears perk up.
How’d you know. This presenter presenting presenters stuff is weird but I don’t mind it.
Phoenix wins, who deserves to be an Oscar winner, a good performance from him, though I wish it had been for, almost any other performance of his from the past decade.
Nice win for The Master.
Honouring River Phoenix was beautiful.
Missed the majority of his speech due to my cable nearly breaking down, likely due to the awesomeness of Bong's win/speech, but saw the end at least, which was was nice.
I've gotta say, Joaquin's speech-giving has come an incredibly long way since the Golden Globes.
Zellweger wins, which you know she was good, though I wish she had been in a good Garland biopic.
*Yawn*
It’s hard to hate on any of these acting nominees cause they’re all just so likeable.
And the acting categories were as expected. As least the speeches were good.
Okay time to find out if it will be the best winner since Birdman or the best winner of the decade.
PARASITE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BEST OF THE DECADE
YES
Louis: *Phil from Uncut Gems voice* You having a good time?!
Howard Ratner: Yes.
WE WON!
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS PARASITE!!!!!!!!
*Louis gets hit by rake* while celebrating.
Holy shit, they actually did it. Parasite WON.
Anonymous:
Hey hey, no Sideshow Bob clips this year, now excuse me while I let those guy out who I have trapped in my security doors.
I feel this was in part to make up for Louis's experiences last year.
Also Best Actress continues to match up with Louis's choice, you know, because Buckley was in Judy.
Parasite winning is so amazing that I don't even care about the other, less good, winners (although Dern's career win still does bug me a tiny bit).
Louis: Your thoughts on the technical aspects of this independently made YouTube animation, which is planned to be released as a Hollywood live action film and has more parts coming out in future - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_V-VJQT6pM
Words can't describe how happy I am that Parasite won. The Academy has really redeemed themselves.
Can't wait for Louis' video this year, and Glasgow gonna be the perfect song to present such wonderful year to wrap up the decade.
Louis: Also, have you considered including Phoenix's performance in You were never really here yet?
Toan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P6BFaVGR-Dw&t=110s
Also, just to quote one of my favorite Hamilton songs, to give a better idea of my actual reaction:
WE WON! WE WON! WE WON!
Might be quite late to the blog's celebration, but I had a party with some classmates and friends while watching the Oscars. Safe to say we all went batshit with every major Parasite win. My takes overall are:
- This is the greatest BP choice since Schindler's List, hands down.
- LOVED the Bong Joon Ho upsets over 1917 and OUATIH (especially the former)
- LOVE both Joker wins. I'll dance with the smuggest of grins on my college's stairs.
- Dern and Zellweger winning might be "meh" in my book, but at least their speeches were pretty good (I feel sorry for Zellweger having to follow Phoenix's fantastic speech, though)
- I'm cool with Brad Pitt winning
- Don't really mind the Ford V Ferrari editing win, given Parasite still won big. Good on them
- Love Jojo Rabbit winning Adapted Screenplay. Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi.
- Kind of a shame The Irishman went home with nothing. Still, I'm sure Marty was proud of the winners.
- I wasn't so head over heels for 1917, but their tech wins are nice.
- Most "meh" choice of the night was TS4, but I didn't care that much for Animated Feature this year.
- Nice choice for Original Song.
All in all, a much, much better ceremony than last year's in many different aspects. Had a great time.
Happy with the majority of winners though I still feel sad for Newman.
But what a special win for Parasite. First Non-English language film ever to win Best Picture.
Louis: Rating and thoughts on Willem Dafoe in Togo.
Luke: Your expanded thoughts on the Oscar winners?
Your thoughts on Julianne Nicholson in Togo.
It’s honestly a good evening when the worst wins are Joker for Score and Ford v Ferrari for Editing, both of which have merits on their own. And man still so hyped.
so, yeah, Parasite thankfully won Director and Picture too.
My bets actually were on either 1917 or OUATIH/Parasite (depending on screenplay-win) for Best Picture, and i would have been happy with any of them really
i have one Problem regarding the predictions i have made.
Why the fuck are Foreign movies not allowed to be nominated for best Picture Golden Globes? It's the Hollywood FOREIGN Press! For this Price it makes the least sense not to nominate foreign Films.
Also, i think it just does not make that much sense when a movie wins Best Editing without being nominated for Best Director.
Bryan: Haven't seen the ceremony yet since I had no means to see it live.
Picture: Incredibly deserved win
Director: Happy for Bong though I actually wanted Mendes to win.
Acting: I'm happy for Phoenix as he did deserve to win an Oscar for his sheer talent, shame he wasn't in a better film though. I'm completely fine with Zellweger and Pitt. I wish I was more enthusiastic about Dern's win, I really do but they should've given it to Johansson (Who had to suffer a Julianne Moore) or Pugh.
Screenplays: Happy for both Bong and Taika.
Score: Sorely disappointed. I guess Newman's gonna have to wait for that Honorary/Lifetime Achievement award.
Song: Another win for John and I'm very pleased for Bernie Taupin.
Cinematography: A 2nd win for God :)
Production Design: Spot on prediction, Parasite would be my pick though.
Costume Design: No surprise there.
Makeup: Deserved win
Editing: Whatever, didn't make any differance to the Picture winner so I'm okay with it.
Sound Editing: rather deserved though 1917 should've won.
Sound Mixing: Easy win.
Visual Effects: Very well deserved.
International Feature: The rest didn't stand a chance.
Animated Feature: Fuck the Obsession with Disney/Pixar.
Well I slept through the rest of the ceremony, and waking up to see the academy "didn't" screw up best picture this time was a nice surprise.
Louis how would you rank the wins?
Well after a long sleep, I'm glad I hadn't imagined everything as an "essential plan" only to wake up to a Joker win. Thankfully it did happen.
Luke & Anonymous:
Well as my annual film I watch as a quarter watch the Oscars largely on mute, Togo was a genuinely sweet film helped along by...
Dafoe - 4(A committed performance, as to be expected, and Dafoe is wonderful in bringing so much heart within a rough exterior. Dafoe gives just a terrific turn in being able to bring the emotion of the character so subtly as it relates to his dog, that makes it such an incredibly moving journey through work. Dafoe in some way has shades of Wake here in his Henry V speech, but here in inspirational purposes and does so with great ability.)
Nicholson - 3.5(Proper actress to compliment Dafoe here as her naturalism delivers an equal amount of genuine heart. She has a nice low key chemistry with Dafoe and the two together just create an assumed sense of affection together. Just a performance again worthy of the Spacek comparison to me, as she brings a very honest grace to her work, and just has that ability to bring such a striking, yet modest screen presence.)
