And the Nominees Were Not:
Kenneth McMillan in Dune
Kenneth McMillan in The Pope of Greenwich Village
Sting in Dune
Harry Dean Stanton in Repo Man
Denholm Elliott in A Private Function
Tim Roth in The Hit
John Candy in Splash
For prediction purposes the Sting/McMillan/McMillan slot goes to whichever McMillan performance I prefer.

Expecting at least 4's for all of them.
Also I watched the new Ben-Hur film. Not good, but not wholly terrible, certainly much better than a few of the films that came out last year.

And The Poster looks amazing.

PSYCHED
This could be The Dark Knight of this new trilogy.
It's now one of my top 5 anticipated films for the rest of the year. I think it might challenge Empire Strikes Back for 'Best Star Wars film' and I hope we'll get a 5 star performance from Hamill or Driver.
Luke: That poster is awesome.
Luke:
Lithgow - 4(John Lithgow? In a cheesefest? Playing a firebrand preacher who banned dancing? Before watching the film I thought I was awaiting quite the hamfest from Lithgow a la The Santa Clause movie or Cliffhanger, but I was quite taken aback by how low key he is in the role. Like Wiest, he takes it so seriously it's rather impressive. Even the preacher scenes, where big acting is perfectly fine, Lithgow doesn't go too big. He's passionate but honest to the quieter man the character is the rest of the time. I found it rather remarkable that he never turns the role into a villain granting at least an understanding to his viewpoint. He makes his transition in the last act believable, particularly due to his strong chemistry with Wiest, and is rather moving even.)
Kinski - 3.5(Underused to the point that I really would have preferred if the film had been from his viewpoint since he is sort of the Gunther Bachmann/George Smiley of the piece. Kinski brings that sort of incisive cunning through his performance presenting that intelligence he breaks down the situation, and manipulates with such unmistakable ease while never seeming manipulative. He's only in a few scenes but he steals the whole film with what he has.)

Fantastic Four directed by John Carpenter:
Mr. Fantastic: Jeff Bridges
Invisible Woman: Rebecca De Mornay
The Human Torch: Val Kilmer
The Thing: Kurt Russell
Doctor Doom: Powers Boothe
Giuseppe:
Griffith - (Her style doesn't always work for me but came off as rather perfect here for the porn star who never really figures out what's going on even at the end. Griffith's sort of airhead style she brings is perfect for the very nonchalant style of the "actress" who keeps trying to play her part even as the situation turns dire. She's very funny while pulling back just enough to convey her unease once she starts to figure out that at the very least something is off.)
Anonymous:
Acting, though indeed great acting. Donald Sutherland's explanation is pretty good that suddenly it all seems far less erotic if you imagine Nicholas Roeg calling out directions and the cameramen, with rather large cameras, going in circles around them.
Louis: Your thoughts on the star wars trailer and poster.
Got high hopes from that trailer, looks pretty epic.
Luke:
The poster was amazing. The trailer technically didn't say much more than it will be visually compelling and probably will have a darker tone in some aspects, then again it didn't really need to say any more than that. Looked great to be sure.
I have a really good feeling about Hamill.

Louis: Your top 10 most disappointing performances by actors you like.
Hamill looks very promising, I agree.
Louis: Are you looking forward to Okja.
Does anyone think there could possibly be 10 slots for Supporting this year.
I hope Hamill gets a 5.
Anonymous: I hope so too and I hope he's supporting as well.
Louis, your thoughts on 'The Wizard Of Lies'' trailer. It seems that De Niro is not sleep walking.
Luke: I think so too that there'll be 10 slots.
Am i the only one who thinks Charlie Day is an actor with potential? He really needs to make a mark in more films.
Charlie Day is hilarious with just about everything he says and does.
You're goddamn right about that. Such comic talent in the guy.
Calvin & Charles: Agreed. I watched Fist Fight recently, which I actually quite enjoyed due to the chemistry between Day and Ice Cube.
I'll have to agree on Day.
Me too, I haven't seen Charlie Day in anything outside of IASIP but he is hilarious in that show.
Louis: Your thoughts on Charlie Day as an actor?
He was the standout of Horrible Bosses for me.
Louis: Do you watch Family Guy? If so, I'd want to have your thoughts on the show's overall quality, and its decline.
Saw Furious 8. It was decent and entertaining enough, though it pretty much revamps the whole character dynamics of the series in a rather weird way.
Diesel - 2.5 (a bit too stoic, even for Don, in a largely reactionary role, though he handles a big emotional scene fairly well)
Johnson - 3.5 (rock solid Rock-ing as usual, with some nice chemistry with...)
Statham - 3.5/4 (though it's somewhat questionable how quickly they make him a hero given his action in the previous films, he's a whole lot of badass high octane fun and makes every stupid line he delivers quite entertaining)
Rodriguez - 2 (lacklustre and dull as usual but she had a few good reactionary moments)
Gibson and Bridges - 3 (their usual schtick and they do it as well as usual)
Emmanuel - 2.5 (good with what she had but wasted)
Eastwood - 2.5 (he was okay but his character was not at all necessary)
Russell - 3.5 (once again, master of exposition)
Thereon - 2.5 (the villain is once again the underwhelming element, more the script's fault than Theron though)
Mirren - 3 (entertaining cameo, though her accent was fairly dodgy)
Also someone else makes a cameo appearance which is welcome though it doesn't make any sense.
Calvin: I'm seeing it tomorrow, but I wish this franchise came to an end, since I feel they're gonna repeat themselves again and again and Walker's passing has left a massive hole in the family dynamic.
Walker is certainly missed.
Luke: The films got better IMO, but that's not saying much.
Anonymous: The films have got better since the fourth entry, though I feel it's getting stale too. I like Vin Diesel, but they need some new blood or get Lucas Black from Tokyo Drift to fill Paul Walker's spot.
Luke: If they ever make a tenth entry, then I hope it's the last.
Anonymous: Agreed. They should get Ben Foster as the main villain for the last one.
Luke: If they get Ben for the last film, then they shouldn't waste his character.
Anonymous: If he gets enough screen time and got some good material (Doesn't have to be great), he could surely get a 4 star performance out of it.
Luke: To be fair, Fast & Furious never had great material.
Anonymous: Decent material then. :)
I agree. The films are like The Italian Job of this era, yet even more far-fetched and without the brilliant quotes from Caine and Coward.
Anonymous:
Clint Eastwood - The Dead Pool
Robert De Niro - Cape Fear (beginning of the end)
Morgan Freeman - Invictus
Paul Newman - Absence of Malice
Kirk Douglas - The Vikings
Donald Sutherland - Klute
Ralph Fiennes - Later Harry Potters
Anthony Perkins - Crimes of Passion
James Stewart - The Philadelphia Story
James Mason - Age of Consent
Luke:
Yes very much so.
Varun:
Looked somewhat interesting if somewhat generic in terms of the vein of Arbitrage, though this one is based on a true story. De Niro looks like he could be good, but I wasn't amazed by what he did in the trailer.
Charles:
Well as an overall actor I've only seen his work that is more or less a slight variation of Charlie Kelly such as in Pacific Rim and Horrible Bosses. His work as Charlie Kelly though is pretty great, though a little unwieldy as sometimes he can go off on the wrong limb which can lead to dead horse beating in It's Always Sunny. His manic style though in general is very entertaining, and he's hilarious most of the time.
Tahmeed:
I saw the first three seasons which are rough though somewhat amusing, but I found the fourth, and any random later episodes I have seen, pretty intolerable with its structureless gag writing, with so many of the gags missing.
Louis: Your thoughts on Henry Cavill as an actor.
Louis: What do you think Fiennes should've done with his performance as Voldemort.
Louis, what's your ratings and thoughts on Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson in Unbreakable?
R.I.P Clifton James.
R.I.P. Clifton James
R.I.P. Clifton James
Louis: I know you gave your top 15 male lead performance of all time, but what are your 16-20?
Louis: Your top ten male leading and supporting performances of the 80s.
Mine would be:-
Leading
1. F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus
2. Harry Dean Stanton in Paris, Texas
3. William Hurt in Kiss of the Spider Woman
4. Raul Julia in Kiss of the Spider Woman
5. Daniel Day Lewis in My Left Foot
6. Mel Gibson in Gallipoli
7. Robert Duvall in Tender Mercies
8. Aleksei Kravchenko in Come and See
9. Tom Hulce in Amadeus
10.Michael J Fox in Back to the Future
Louis: Also, have you considered upgrading Hector Elizondo for The Flamingo Kid.
Louis: Your top 15 favourite trailers of all-time.
Seen any 2017 releases recently Louis?
Saw Fast 8, aside from the Rock/Statham interactions and Statham's work as a whole, I was utterly bored by it. I thought the Dom going rogue idea was quite interesting, yet felt they wasted it. And did we really need another family dinner ending.
Tahmeed: Great list, mine would be -
1. F. Murray Abraham - Amadeus
2. Harry Dean Stanton - Paris, Texas
3. Jeremy Irons - Dead Ringers
4. William Hurt - Kiss of the Spider Woman
5. Raul Julia - Kiss of the Spider Women
6. Bob Hoskins - Mona Lisa
7. John Lone - The Last Emperor
8. Daniel Day Lewis - My Left Foot
9. Michael J. Fox - Back to the Future
10. Gary Oldman - Sid and Nancy
Luke: I expected it would be boring. I might not see it considering i don't like the series much to begin with.
Charles: I recommend the Statham stuff when it goes up on youtube eventually, but it's definitely not worth full price of admission.
Just checked out your top ten and realize your update of Nausica in 1984. Hope it's gonna be a dream start for Studio Ghibli here in this blog :))

Haven't seen him stretch himself past the leading man type currently. As a leading man he's basically acceptable. He has enough presence and is charming enough. I don't think he truly excels in either aspect but he's usually decent.
Matt:
Willis - (Going on having not re-watched since I saw it in theaters. Anyway as I recall Willis makes for a good sort of purposefully stoic hero. In that Willis very much is a representation of the hero type in a fairly straightforward way, though not emotionally simple way. He portrays sort of the conflict of accepting his place in an effective way less as a hero shirking his duty, but just as man coming to terms with his strange reality.)
Jackson - 4(If I re-watched the film he probably would go up. As I liked his way of giving way the twist while never actually doing it. In that he gives sort of the cunning incisive style fitting to a villain yet Jackson is able to subvert with this genuine passion of a man who believes he's doing the right thing, again technically a villain though he hides it so well while technically not hiding it all. I particularly love his final scene where he's actually rather heartbreaking in depicting the man painfully accepting his apparent "fate".)
Luke:
Just toned it down a bit honestly particularly with the "Naaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhsssssss". He and Bonham-Carter has a similair trajectory where they began well enough but took their mannerisms up to eleven in the later installments.

Calvin:
Saw Furious 8 as well.
Louis: Thoughts on the film & ratings/thoughts on the cast.
Louis: Is Mel Gibson a 4 for The Patriot.
Oh wait Louis has already post his 15 lead performance of all time? Where can I find his list guys? Could anybody tell me where can I find it?
Luke:
Sort of pondering the series as whole, well the revitalized portion, this film helped me kind of see what I like about the films oppose to other dumb action films. Well first of all the action is done well in all of ridiculousness. Just being ridiculous in itself isn't enough the execution has to be there, and it's there again. The second being the characters, which while they aren't Michael Coreleone or Scarlett O'Hara, they have just enough there, for an action film of this type, to be likable. Again again the likable "family" is there. Third is the chemistry the cast seems to be having fun, for the most part, and they let us in on the fun. Again that is apparent here. There is a mistake though in the tone, which the previous three I felt found the right balance between fun and taking it just seriously enough. Here though it actually went too dark at some points, even in the action they made the mistake to show human collateral damage, but worst of all was the main element of the plot which just is a little too serious for a Fast and Furious movie. It doesn't ruin the movie but it takes too much of the fun out of it, which is all that these movies are suppose to be.
Diesel - 2.5(I don't think where they put Dom was the best place for his character to be. Too much brooding is not a good thing for Diesel. Obviously he needed it for the part but it does not play to his strengths unfortunately.)
Johnson - 3.5(Rocking it out in the best of ways, with a great scene partner in ......)
Statham - 3.5(Okay his character change makes no sense, given what he did at the end of 6, in fact Luke Evans's brother probably is more redeemable in terms of his onscreen actions. Statham though is there to play and play he does. He's a great match for Rock and the two are so much fun together in there great clash of charisma. Someone get them a buddy cop movie NOW.)
Bridges/Gibson - 3(They're doing there usual thing and it's a good example of it.)
Eastwood - 2.5(Looks just like his father only with the charisma, confidence and screen presence removed. To be fair it kind of works though for this part given he's suppose to be new hapless crew member.)
Russell - 3.5(I could listen to him give exposition all day along he does it so well and makes it so much fun to listen to.)
Hivju - 3(He's basically just doing Tormund but hey he's good at that sort of menace and it works for the part.)
Theron - 2(Disappointing performance as she just doesn't find the right path for her performance. The problem is though she just doesn't seem to be having any fun in the role whatsoever. Your in a Fast and the Furious movie, that's a time where you can go over the top it bit. She's far too dour in the role, and just needed to let loose a bit.)
Mirren - 3(Entertaining little cameo from her, now she's having the right kind of fun.)
Nguyễn:
You can find the list in my review for Keanu Reeves in Thumbsucker.
Louis: I don't know about you, but I think the Fast & Furious franchise should come to an end. What do you think?
I want it to end soon, but since it made over half a billion dollars in 5 days, it's gonna be a long wait.
Wouldn't be surprised if they somehow resurrected Han for the sequel just to make it okay to root for Statham without feeling like something's very amiss.
Calvin: Oh, fuck no. I'll be done with the franchise if that ever happened.
Luke: I mean they might as well, I kinda like that they're going as ridiculous as possible with everything.
Calvin: Perhaps, but after last night's viewing, these films are growing stale for me unfortunately and as I've said before I want Lucas Black back to fill the Walker role and please get Foster as the villain for FF9, as I would like to see him share some scenes with Statham again.
Nguyen: Got ya covered, i hope more films of Studio Ghibli make it on his top 10's too.
1. F. Murray Abraham in Amadeus
2. Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia
3. Gene Hackman in The Conversation
4. James Stewart in It’s A Wonderful Life

Yeah probably, since they basically have to go to space at this point. I wouldn't be opposed to a Hobbs spinoff though.
Louis: Your thoughts on the His Silicon Soul episode.
Louis: I'd happily see a Hobbs/Deckard spin-off.
Louis: Your thoughts on Christoph Waltz, Klaus Maria Brandauer and Klaus Kinski.
Charles:
Thank you Charles! Really appreciate it :)
Louis: Your top 10 Jon Voight acting moments.
Anonymous:
I do think the episode has some vaguely interesting ideas but it doesn't really do much with them unfortunately. It's a fairly forgettable episode all things considered but not a bad one.
Luke:
Waltz - (Waltz seems to be stuck in an unfortunate case of type casting as the Euro-villain. His performances seem to reflect a boredom with this and it's unfortunately becoming very stale despite how strong it began. Now his two Oscar winning turns are knock outs, and actually, despite similarities in the roles, do show a range. In Inglorious he's absolutely chilling in his portrayal of amorality, while in Django he's absolutely charming while being moving in his portrayal of morality. In both he brings an entertaining comedic energy as the life loving extrovert. His range does not end there as proven by Zero Theorem where he so effectively played an introvert. I wish someone would give him to stretch himself again because he has it in him.)
Brandauer - (Technically I need to see more of him, yet going off the four performances of his that I've seen he's an incredibly intriguing performer. In that he is able to capture this captivating cold emotionalism. His work has this striking presence, that perhaps can create distance, yet he offers so much nuance within it that breaks down that distance. He's one I wish to see more of, and I'd love to see him in a high profile film again.)
Kinski - (Also need to see much more of him, but from what I've seen he's a one of a kind performer. Kinski is this force of nature in his performance style that has this intense emotional quality within his animalesque physicality. He's captivating performer in his ability to be so grand yet subtle all the same. Such as one of my favorite moments of his is his underrated work in Doctor Zhivago where you just see him looking upon the free couple below him, and face expresses so much. Kinski's performance are his in a most unique way where he can be heartbreaking yet frightening all in the same breath.)
