Of course Von Sydow and Kinski are the better choices in the list but I'd assume Jack Nicholson in "The King of Marvin Gardens" will also be in the list rather than Voight, Reynolds or Redford. Doesn't anyone remember how great he was in that picture?

@Anonymous: Well thats where the bonus reviews come in =D if Louis hasnt seen it him when the rankings are made he always has a chance to get in when he comes back to 1972.

Louis: What are your top ten animated sequences.

Random question but just wondering, what are everyone's thoughts (Louis included) on Ernie Hudson in Ghostbusters, I felt quite sad reading an interview recently about him melancholically musing that he never got to be as overtly funny as the other 3 Ghostbusters, just wondering if anyone else thinks that he played the role perfectly, just want to give him a hug haha

RatedRStar said...

@Donald: Ye lol poor old Ernie does get the short end of the stick but I still thought he was good and likable lol, I guess he did the role about as well as anyone could have I suppose lol, he does have a purpose as well, as he is basically the straight man, as opposed to the sarcastic witty Murray, the excitable Aykroyd and the lovable nerd Ramis =D lol.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Apart from Hepburn And Baxter, did you see any other female performances from 1956, that would receive a 4.5 or more from you.

Anonymous said...

Honestly I'd give Baxter a 3.5 at best for The Ten Commandments... She was okay at being both seductive and manipulative but she had some VERY overdone line-deliveries that don't quite work... Louis, what are your ratings and thoughts on Rita Moreno in The King and I?

John Smith: He won't be reviewing performances, that he's already seen.

Anonymous said...

@John Smith: I don't think he will do performances that he has already seen and ranked because, well we already knows what he thinks of them, you could ask him what he thinks of many of these films.

Luke Higham said...

John Smith: All apart from these performances, you can suggest/recommend for the bonus rounds.

Louis, I'd like to ask you: is Audrey Hepburn still a 3.5 for her performance in Breakfast at Tiffany's? I just love her performance and I'd personally give her a 5... I think she does a great job in being her usual charming self but this time in a way that's also kind of repulsive because she always shows Holly's unwilling to get close to someone, always trying to protect herself from any kind of feeling. I love how she seems to be careless because Holly would like to be that way, but always showing the sensitivity that she so much tries to ignore - the scene when she meets her ex-husband, the scene when she finds out that her brother, the last connection she had to her former life, is dead or the final scene when she realizes that maybe the life she wants is not the best, they all are masterclass of acting. I think it's a magical performance.

Luke:

Hackman - 4(Hackman really gives it his all and it would be easy enough to go down the route of particularly cheesy disaster movie style of acting, which co-star Ernest Borgnine decides to do for the first half of his performance. Hackman though delivers in giving the passion to his rather repetitive speeches, and manages to bring the needed gravity to the story)

York - 4(The writer is purposefully a meek role since he kinda reacts through the story and when he does do something it's often in a retiring sort of way. York though does nicely within the limits of his performance creating an interesting enough charm within the limits, even if he is overshadowed by Minnelli's more emotional performance. He does work in kinda facilitating her more flamboyant performance, and does well enough as the reserved almost deadpan foil. A funny thing though is I'd actually say his best chemistry is with Helmut Griem although I'd say that was intentionally so, but they create their unique mostly unsaid relationship rather well.)

Off the top of my head some great animated sequences:

The Great Owl - The Secret of NIMH
Monstro - The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad
The Whale - Pinocchio
The Forest Fire - Bambi
Hellfire - The Hunchback of Notre Dame

No other 4.5's at the moment.

Baxter's 4.5 was before I re-watched The Ten Commandments, but she stood up for me on re-watch. A few of her deliveries might have been a bit overt but the strength of her best moments made up for them.

Matt:

To Name a Few.

Dallas in the air vents - Alien
Ben Gardner's boat - Jaws
Bathtub - Diaboliques
Man behind Winkies - Mulholland Drive
Introduction to the Mystery Man - Lost Highway
Pleasure Island - Pinocchio
The Stairwell - Psycho (I think more effective now simply because it has been less referenced than the shower)
The Execution - 10 Rillington Place
Peter Quint in the window - The Innocents

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

Hudson did get less to do but I agree with RatedRStar that he still added something to the group dynamic.

John Smith:

They were already on an even keel but over time Brody's work stood out a little more for me.

Robert:

Winstead - 4(The film probably is a little too unassuming for its own good. I did like Winstead's performance though which was that of the day to day functioning alcoholic. Although I don't think the film came up for rather inspired events for her to go through Winstead managed to elevate the little there was to something believable and created a fairly interesting portrayal of someone who's always taken excessive drinking for granted.)

Harris - 3.5(I like her performance here just fine as I thought her own somewhat off-beat prescence is fitting to Dean's performance. I don't feel she makes that much of an impact in the whole scheme of things, but certainly adds something to the film)

Anonymous:

I haven't re-watched it, or even thought much of it.
