Really, Trintignant? I mean I guess I could see him in lead...although I really do think it was a textbook ensemble film...but even still he didn't have much of a character did he?
Louis: Thank You for reviewing Caine. 1. Ventura 2. Holden 3. Caine 4. Trintignant 5. Hopper (I remember you saying that Nicholson was best in show and Hopper and Fonda were just good).
Ratings & Thoughts on Newman & Redford in Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and Peter Fonda in Easy Rider.
I've always though Michael Caine's performance in The Italian Job to be very underrated, as well as some of the other actors in the film (I hope Coward will be in contention for Supporting).
Haven't seen Ventura, or Trintignant (I only recommended him on the basis of him winning Cannes), and Hopper was good but far from his best performance. Holden, though, is amazing, and I hope he wins (though I'm sure he won't win the overall, Hoffman and Voight cannot be beat)
@Luke: Yes that moment is hilarious. Um if you don't mind Luke what are your ratings for the casts of the 5 films Louis is reviewing here (those you've seen)
Easy Rider (I must note I'm not a big fan of the film) Fonda-3.5 Hopper-3.5 Nicholson-4
The Italian Job Caine-4.5 Coward-4 (verging on a 4.5) The rest of the cast would be a collective 3 except for Hill who I'd give a 3.5 for I thought he was rather endearing, in a very strange way
As for The Wild Bunch I really need a re-watch but as it is: Holden-5 Borgnine-3.5 (a re-watch may well bump him up a lot as I've grown to like him a lot more as an actor since I first watched this film, his final reactions were great if I recall) Ryan-4 (another one who may well go up) O'Brien -3 Oates-3 (I remember him being very limited, but effective within those limits) Johnson-3 (same as Oates) Sanchez-3.5 (I remember being very moved by his performance) Fernandez-3 (I don't really remember him all that well)
Looks like I am the only one to think Jean Louis Trintignant was really good. On the other hand, althoygh the pictures are from 1968, I believe they were not shown in the US till 1969 so how about Malcom McDowell (If...) and Jean Pierre Leaud (Stollen Kisses)? Also Paul Newman and Robert Redford in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" were a lot fun to watch. And one more missed opportunity for Dirk Bogarde (The Damned), who is always fascinating.
Louis: With the question Anonymous asked you earlier on, McDowell is definitely '68 by your rules, since if... was initially released in December of that year in the UK.
@Psifonian: When will you publish your updated Best Supporting Actress video on YouTube? I'm really looking forward to it, your videos are really well done and your picks are interesting! Oh, and about the Lead Actress video... I''m kinda sad that Simone Signoret is not your pick for Lead Actress 1955 anymore and that your winner for 1951 isn't Leigh (who gives my favorite performance ever in Streetcar), but it was really a beautiful video (interesting pick for 2014 in particular!) and we agree on some of the winners (love your three wins for Ingrid Bergman and the one to Teresa Wright in Shadow of a Doubt among many others)
Anonymous: I'm actually working on it now. I will be releasing my Ridley Scott tribute first, then will be working hard on updating all my acting winners. Yeah, I was sad to see Signoret go, but Magnani floored me on the rewatch. Leigh's fantastic in '51, but I just identified more with Winters and found her much more haunting (plus I've since seen performances of Blanche that have eclipsed Leigh's; namely, Gillian Anderson's turn). And more people really need to see "Queen" for Kangana Ranaut's flawless, luminous work.
Richard Burton-Anne of the Thousand Days Robert Forster-Medium Cool Dustin Hoffman-Midnight Cowboy Jean-Louis Trintignant-Z John Voight-Midnight Cowboy
Newman - 4.5(Technically a bit like his performance in the Sting although with less of an exact purpose though. Newman's work though is all about his charm which he has plenty of here and is one incredibly likable outlaw. In addition though Newman knows how to do this especially well while still maintaining at least enough of a menace for the character. Also he works quite well with...)
Redford - 4(Although I might still say a tad overshadowed by Newman not to the extent that he is in the Sting, although there's no Robert Shaw around to do an extra bit shading either. Redford though has a great dynamic with Newman here as he kinda acts well as the humorless one which plays well against Newman's more colorful performance. In addition the more emotional moments that are there, mostly in the final act, are made appropriately moving as the two certainly create an endearing friendship)
What are your ratings and thoughts on Meryl Streep in August: Osage County? Also, speaking of 1969, what are your ratings and thoughts on Katharine Ross in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Brenda Vaccaro and Sylvia Miles in Midnight Cowboy and Dyan Cannon in Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice?
Honestly, I slightly preferred Redford to Newman in BC & SK. Newman was as good as always but I thought Redford's deadpan performance was actually a little more entertaining this time around, especially when he reveals that he can't swim.
Streep - 3(After this being some time after the watching the film I have to admit I barely remember much of her performance or even the film which really was such a bland telling of potentially interesting material. From what I remember I thought overt Streep worked for the material but oddly seemed muted despite the material)
Ross - 3(She's charming enough in the role and has a good enough chemistry with both men. She's not anything too remarkable to be sure, but she's good)
Miles - 2.5(She's there to be a somewhat grotesque character for a for a scene, which I actually think she does just fine though she's not a one scene wonder by any measure)
Vaccaro - 3(If someone had to be nominated I suppose I would have taken her over miles although I don't think she's anything too memorable either. I mean she's fine in that she brings a certain allure in her scene with Voight. That's about it)
Cannon - 4.5(I really liked her performance a great deal although she's definitely lead not supporting. Cannon though is quite effective in portraying the low key discontent with her character as she is most confused by her friends life changes. She has some great moments with the narrative though such as when her husband casually admits an affair, and her breakdown is quite moving actually)

GDSAO: I loved Coward's performance and I will suggest him for supporting as well, his final line in the funeral scene cracks me up every time.

I am hoping that Army Of Shadows is liked because, well 1969 isn't the greatest of film years, so it will be great to find a hidden gem.

@Psifonian: You're the second person I've heard who saw Gillian Anderson's take on that character and considers her the definitive Blanche.

Might as well ask about Fonda in Hopper's review.
