I think Fonda will win, Whiting was charming and very um lovely lol =D, I have a feeling Whiting will finish last but I still thought he was charming and charismatic, the perfect Romeo.

ill admit my favorite people of the Romeo and Juliet cast were Michael York (his expressions are perfect such as when he plays the game with Mercutio and slowly gets more angry and competitive. The other would be Mercutio himself who was passionate and quite entertaining.
Whiting and Hussey have great chemistry, I think they both show a lot of passion and love which is appropriately shown, he is quite likable and nice too lol, more than any other Romeo and Juliet. Whiting is a hellva lot better then Leonardo DiCaprio was in the same role.
Romeo + Juliet is one of the worst films I've ever seen. It baffles me to why people condemn the Ethan Hawke Hamlet (which really is a good movie) so quickly while championing Baz Lurhman's trash.
oh I agree =D, ive never seen Hawkes Hamlet so I wouldnt no, but ye I hated Romeo + Juliet, who was ur favorite cast member of the 68 version Koook160.
I didn't think much of the acting in the 68 Romeo and Juliet nor really in any of it's adaptations. I do like the the version and think it's the best one, but I was far more impressed by Zeffirelli's directional attention to detail as well as the art direction in general. The play is Shakespeare's most well known work but it's certainly not nearly his best, or even in the top 5 in my opinion. Personally, I don't see what's wrong with Lurhmann's version. Ok that's a lie, but I still found what he was trying to do with it interesting. The biggest issue with the film is the fact that DiCaprio is pretty much incapable of playing a romantic lead successfully, especially early in his career. I mean performances in Titanic and R+J are two of his worst.
I always used to get moodly whenever I saw the guns in Romeo + Juliet, I mean they are so stylised its like the guns from the game Devil May Cry are in it.
The 68 version is in my top 5 films, I just find it a nice lovely film, films like Saving Private Ryan and Schindlers List are films I respect but dont love, It needs to be a film that I can associate with completely =D.
@RStar: My favorite of the '68 version was whoever played Friar Lawrence, though Mercutio and Lord Capulet were top notch as well. As for the Ethan Hawke Hamlet, it's not actually too bad. Instead of the modern setting being a gimick, they intergrated the modern setting into the plot, such as the letter to hang Rosencrantz and Guildenstern being an e-mail that Hamlet hacked. The casting is more or less fine, with Hawke going for a more moaning and droning angsty teen that fits the setting more. Yes, Bill Murray is an odd fit as Polonius, but the real gift is Liev Schreiber as Laertes. He easily is the best interpertation of the character to grace the screen.
Although I think both can be put in either category I do consider them both lead, although co-leads Fonda with Charles Bronson, and Karloff with Tim O'Kelly. I will say that Fonda is on enough of a border that I could change my mind about his placement down the road, but for the moment he's lead.
And Louis, do you know of a similar blog with Oscar actress reviews? Maybe also with alternate reviews, like you have? I'd be interested in seeing a blog like that as well.
