Schell - 4.5(It's absolutely ridiculous that he was nominated for Julia instead of this. Schell is very good here as he does pompousness so well, and I love that Schell expresses it as on the ego of a true Nazi believer, but rather an aristocrat who believes himself better by right. All of his stand off scenes with Coburn are terrific. Schell makes for an effective villain but he surprisingly is able to elicit a modicum of sympathy in the scene where the Captain explains why he wants the Iron Cross so badly. Also he's surprisingly hilarious in the final scene where the Captain fails rather badly at showing how a Prussian fights)
Finney - 3(As the supporting players go I preferred Edward Fox, Alun Armstrong, and especially Tom Conti. I found Finney to be entertaining enough in his one scene of portraying the boisterousness of the new man in power)
Macy - 3.5(I thought Macy was pretty good in having an easy going likability while still having a certain sleaze about him at the same. Like Carney he's pretty good at balancing the comedy and drama of the film. I don't think he's quite as effective though as I found Carney to leave the stronger impression in Macy's big scene)

Luke:
Fox - 3(Solid work as he carries himself with the right proper command as he stands in power, then the perfect loss of this the next time we see him as he's on the outs with the government)
Armstrong - 3(He doesn't have much of a character but I thought all his reactions were quite effective)
Conti - 3.5(I would have liked if he had shown up for more scenes, as his delivery in the scene discussing the time for duels was brilliantly done. He's so delightful and amusing while still feeling completely fitting to the setting)

Christie - 4.5(She does here what I felt was missing in her performance in Far From the Madding Crowd. In that here she does a fantastic job of playing off the three men whether it be Steiger, Courtenay, or Sharif I love how she differentiates her work showing how Laura feels about each man. She brings such a allure and grace to her performance yet she does an excellent job of portraying the maturation of her character throughout the story)
Chaplin - 4(She really does not have that much to do, but she is quite the charming presence. She's about as good as anyone probably could be in her role)

Guinness - 4(I actually really like his work here as David Lean almost seems to fall back on Guinness for guaranteed gravitas. Well Guinness does that bringing the needed weight to his narration, but as well still conveying the coldness of his character who is secret police. Honestly I think one could have made a film out of his character instead.)
Richardson - 3.5(Like Chaplin he doesn't get much to do but he's really good within these limited confines)
Kinski - 4(Great one scene wonder to be sure. Perfectly cast to be sure as well as Kinski brings such a vicious passion in an instance and it feels like you know this man after the short time we meet him. I particularly love just his reaction as he looks at the couple showing the very real pain under his character's bluster)
