Mh... That's not easy to predict. I've only seen Poitier who was pretty great, even if I preferred Steiger.
Predictions:
1. Poitier
2. Blake
3. Harris
4. Delon
5. Garner
I've just heard that Neil Patrick Harris will host the Oscars! I'm extremely happy as I think he did a terrific job hosting the Emmys and the Tonys.

Question to everybody, what do you think of Ryan O'Neal and Ali MacGraw in Love Story? I just saw it for the first time and I thought O'Neal was good and MacGraw was great (I know many hate her though). What are your opinions (or possibly ratings and thoughts) on those two performances?

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

O'Neal: 3.5
MacGraw: 3

My favourite performance in the film are those of Ray Milland and John Marley, actually.

Strangely, the film I am looking forward to most even though I did request James Garner, is actually Far from the Madding Crowd, and in particular Terence Stamp, what are his chances of getting in Louis when you do supporting do you reckon?

1. Robert Blake
2. Sidney Poitier
3. Richard Harris
4. Alain Delon
5. James Garner

Also I think I'm gonna change one of my requests, I'm swapping out Peter Dinklage in Living in Oblivion (even though I think it's a hysterical brief performance that I still think you should check out Louis) for John Carradine in The Grapes of Wrath for 1940 Supporting Actor, who I absolutely loved.

What are your ratings and thoughts on Leslie Caron in The L-Shaped Room, Katharine Hepburn and Beah Richards in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and Shirley McLaine in The Apartment?

Scott:

Marvin - 3.5(Marvin's only barely lead which reduces his impact a bit. Nevertheless Marvin gives a solid performance as the rough leader type, which is usually the case for Marvin in such roles. It seems he could play this role in his sleep. As those roles go I definitely preferred him in The Professionals and especially in The Big Red One. He's good here though even though his role is a tad limited)

Van Dyke - 3(I thought as a whole his performance worked in that I felt he was enjoyable enough and that carried the film well enough. I do think he could've stretched himself a little more as he basically just played the part as Rob Petrie)

Poitier - 4.5(I wonder if this performance cost him a nomination for In The Heat of the Night since he's great here. It's funny to see him basically advance from a troubled student in Blackboard Jungle to the teacher of troubled student. Poitier is charming and charismatic as always, but he's absolutely convincing in portraying the inspirational quality of his character. What I love about his performance is he never sugar coats this journey and particularly effective in the scene where he loses his temper showing that his character does have limits. It's strong work that managed to elevate the film wonderfully well)

Connery - 4(It does not have any of the darker elements of his From Russia With Love performance nor does he have an acting partner like Robert Shaw, Donald Pleasence is underused, and he's not quite as charming and suave as he is in his first three ventures as Bond. Nevertheless he's not phoning it in and the reasons he was so good as Bond are still prevalent)

RatedRStar:

I ought to watch it first to get my bearing on category placements but there's definitely plenty of room in supporting.

Robert:

I imagine when I placed Bridges I was thinking about where Jones was leading or supporting then when I got to supporting I guess I forgot about the film, which I haven't seen since like 96 anyways. I do remember some really bad Irish accents though and I recall Jones going full
Two-Face in that one.

Anonymous:

Hepburn - 2.5(It's funny that she seemed to have won for Spencer Tracy's performance since it's hard to explain how she won over her competition otherwise. Hepburn is mostly reactive and pretty forgettable in this respect. She's decent enough really in her one major scene where she fires her co-worker, but there's not much else)

Richards - 2(If she needed to be nominated I would taken her work as the abortionist in In The Heat of the Night over this. I found her whole performance to be overwrought as she played every scene as though the world was about to end and was absurdly one note throughout the film)

MacLaine - 4(I quite like her performance as she has some genuinely sweet chemistry with Lemmon and managed to deal with her character's suicidal depression without making it seem too heavy or too light. It's charming work even though I do feel that the film belongs to Lemmon)

I disagree on Hepburn, I think she's so underrated... She's quite moving to me and she has some great moments, even if she shouldn't have won. Agree completely about Richards though - she's just dull and she was better in ITHOTN. What are your thoughts and ratings on Audrey Hepburn in Wait Until Dark?

Louis could I have your thoughts and ratings on the cast of The Third Man?

Thoughts/rating on Judy Garland in Judgement at Nuremberg

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

Hepburn - 4(She screams well. Seriously though her extreme likability works quite well here only making the the final act have all the stronger impact. It's not an especially complex role for her but she handles it with her usual grace and charm)

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

Cotten - 4.5(Does his perplexed hero quite well by never making him particularly heroic. Cotten's easy going style works for his character who's kinda having an odd adventure that he had no intention of having. He slowly shows the growth of seriousness in his performance well and every one of his scenes with Welles are dynamite)

Howard - 4(Howard technically is there just to do a lot of exposition but he does it incredibly well. He brings so much character in simply his delivery of this exposition I particularly enjoy his constant scoffing at being called Callahan instead of Calloway)

Lee - 3.5(Quite a likable bit work from Lee as he does his tough guy/fan boy act quite humorously without making too much of a spectacle out of his character)

Valli - 3(Easily the weak leak for me. She's fine for the most part but she never makes much out of her role)

Louis Morgan said...

Garland - 3.5(I might be changing her score again, but anyway... She's good enough in her testimony scene in that she certainly is moving but never reaches the heights of Clift or even Lancaster in their similair scenes)

I hope Blake or Delon win this.
