Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2013

And the Nominees Were Not:

Ben Foster in Ain't Them Bodies Saints

Ben Foster in Lone Survivor

James Gandolfini in Enough Said

Colin Farrell in Saving Mr. Banks

Sharlto Copley in Elysium

Matthew McConaughey in Mud

Matthew McConaughey in The Wolf of Wall Street

For the prediction contest the honors go to:

Foster in Lone Survivor

McCounaughey in Wolf

(And just for Koook and RatedRStar, I picked the best troll face Sharlto Copley has to offer. Advanced apologies to both of you.)

Louis? um excuse me what do you think your doing, there seems to be some ugly fucking caveman on my screen, the guy between Farrell and Matthew, whats he doing here lol.

Luke Higham said...

What are your ratings and thoughts for Jeremy Renner in American Hustle & James Franco in Spring Breakers

Anonymous said...

Gandolfini should win this in a landslide.

Note that I said should.

Luke Higham said...

This is Mcconaughey's to win:
I'll choose his ten minute performance in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Kevin said...

Hey Louis, have you seen McConaughey's performances in both The Lincoln Lawyer and Magic Mike? If you did, what are your thoughts on them?

RatedRStar said...

I am gonna go with Foster since he is given more to do and has more than 10 minutes of screentime, although it could be close.

1)Ben Foster
2)Matthew McConaughey
3)Colin Farrell
4)James Gandolfini
5)Sharlto One Hit Wonder Copley

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Also ratings for De Niro in Hustle & Hanks for Saving Mr Banks.

Matt Mustin said...

luke: You didn't ask me, but I thought De Nio's short scene was the best part of the movie by far.

Michael Patison said...

1. Matthew McConaughey
2. James Gandolfini
3. Colin Farrell
4. Ben Foster
5. Sharlto Copley

The hard part was trying to guess Farrell vs. Foster.

Michael Patison said...

Matt: I agree completely. The next best scene in my opinion was virtually every scene involving Renner, but especially when he makes his promise to them in the ballroom and when he finds out he's been had.

Luke Higham said...

Matt: My dislike for American Hustle has lessened slightly on a rewatch & I think its just fine. I agree about, De Niro & I would say he alongside Renner gave the best performances in the film. I liked Bale for what he gave to his part, although severely restricted to go beyond that.

Matt Mustin said...

Michael: Renner was EXCELLENT when he found out about the con. Bale was great too, but Renner REALLY sold that scene.

Matt Mustin said...

Also, I'd just like to say that I REALLY wish I hadn't known De Niro was gonna be in it before I saw it, because that would've been an AWESOME surprise.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: I'd give Franco a 2.5, for me it was not like watching Maximus Decimus in the Colosseum.

I'd give Renner a 4 although close to a 4.5. I really did like how much passion and genuine heart he gave to his role. I wish the film did not consistently backhand him in terms of screen time and importance though. The film could have used much more development between his and Bale's friendship.

I would also give De Niro a four. A terrific one scene wonder as he just oozes menace in the scene. It's probably the best he's been since Goodfellas.

Hanks would also get a four. He did not become Disney like Martin Landau in Ed Wood for example, but he did find some of the essence of the man, and his revelation scene is very well done.

JamDenTel: I haven't had a chance to see it.

Louis Morgan said...

Matt: I found it an enjoyable dumb action movie. It actually is a much better call back to the films of that sort from the 80's than the ones starring the actual actors from the period.

Matt Mustin said...

I wouldn't agree it's the best he's been since Goodfellas, but he was VERY good.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Have you seen Michael Mann's Heat

Matt Mustin said...

Louis, have you seen Catching Fire, and if so, what did you think of the performances?

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: I have but for me that is De Niro's period where he could be good, but never quite has that spark found in his performances from the 70's and 80's.

Matt Mustin said...

Well, I'm one of the people who thought he was great in Silver Linings Playbook, but I know you disagree with me.

What did you think of him in Casino?

Louis Morgan said...

Matt: I've seen it. I liked it even if its structure was a bit flawed.

As for the performances I was a bit disappointed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, but I do believe that was entirely because of role. I was rather impressed by Donald Sutherland in this one though. Harrelson and Tucci were also good again, and liked Jeffrey Wright as well though his screentime was limited.

Louis Morgan said...

Matt: I think he's good in Casino, but just good. That whole film for me is really just a jumble of Scorsese's usual elements done in a less compelling fashion.

Matt Mustin said...

Sutherland was great. And I liked Hoffman a lot, but that might be because he was exactly how I imagined the character when I read the book. And of course, you can rarely go wrong with Stanley Tucci.

I also thought Jennifer Lawrence was VASTLY superior in that than she was in American Hustle.

Louis Morgan said...

Matt: Yes Lawrence was very good.

Michael McCarthy said...

I still have to ask Louis, are you not going to post Dern's review until Nebraska is on DVD? Or will you try to find some other way of watching it?

Louis Morgan said...

Michael: The first chance I have to see it I will take it.

Louis Morgan said...

Kevin: I haven't seen the Lincoln Lawyer. I saw part of Magic Mike but I found Soderberg's style so tiresome that I was not able to get through though. I thought McConaughey was good in the few scenes that I saw him in.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'll forgive the troll just for that picture. Well played. My guess:

1. Gandolfini
2. Foster
3. Farrell
4. Copley
5. McConaughey

Luke Higham said...

Louis: who're you reviewing first

Matt Mustin said...

luke: I prefer not to know. I like to be suprised when a new review pops up.

Michael Patison said...

Same

RatedRStar said...

Trust us Luke it really is better not to know, so that when the next review comes up you'll be like "yay I didnt expect him I wonder who will be next"

moviefilm said...

1) Matthew McConaughey
2) James Gandolfini
3) Ben Foster
4) Colin Farrell
5) Sharlto Copley

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what are your thoughts on each film in the Harry Potter Series

Kevin said...

1) McConaughey
2) Gandolfini
3) Foster
4) Copley
5) Farrell

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: I should note that think all the films are at least watchable.

The first two are both fine but suffer from Chris Columbus's lack of a sure hand as a director. He does not quite know what to do with the material other than try to jam pack it all in which makes Chambers in particular longer than it needed to be.

The third I think is the best as Cuaron really knows how to make material sing and his use of music and visuals are excellent. I would say though we did not need the fake out scene with Gary Oldman's character (or at least in more subtle fashion), as it forced Oldman to play that scene all wrong.

The fourth I don't know what Mike Newell was thinking but all of his choices were were pretty poor especially the bizarre way he chose to portray Dumbledore. Brendan Gleeson does do a pretty good job of covering for some of these problems, but even his goodwill is countered by David Tennant's ridiculous performance.

The rest are all solid although somewhat mixed as David Yates has a strong visual sense but is somewhat inconsistent. There are moment where he really brings something from the books to life brilliantly, but there are others that are just awkwardly handled, like the ending to Half-Blood Prince in particular. Also Steve Kloves overwriting in regards to Hermione becomes particularly noticeable and problematic in the later films.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: in that case, who gave the best performance in the series & what rating would you give him/her.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: The best is Imelda Staunton in Order of the Phoenix who I would give a 4.5. Although I have throw out a special mention to David O'Hara's one scene wonder in The Deathly Hollows Part 1.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What were your thoughts on Ralph Fiennes, I'm guessing he went far too over the top for you.

Louis Morgan said...

I did not hate him or anything, but his performance contained too many loud "Neahhhh"s for its own good. Fiennes is great at a reserved menace so it's too bad he did not get reigned in a little more.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: From what you've seen from 2013, what were your five worst films.

Louis Morgan said...

I should note I have mostly avoided films that are considered bad by everyone.

1. Standup Guys (yeah I count it as 2012 actually, but this just makes it easier for me.)
2. The Fifth Estate
3. The Butler
4. A Single Shot
5. The Last Stand

Kevin said...

Louis, what did you think of Cumberbatch and Bruhl's performances in Fifth Estate?

Louis Morgan said...

Bruhl was pretty forgettable, but I thought he was still fine. I thought Cumberbatch was very good actually, but I wish a better film was around him.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What are your Ratings & thoughts on Whittaker & Oprah in the butler, as well as your rating for Cumberbatch in Fifth Estate.

Kevin said...

Also Louis, what are your thoughts and rating for Sam Rockwell in A Single Shot, or are you going to review him for your Alternate Line-up?

Louis Morgan said...

Whitaker I would give probably a 3. I thought he was fine, but failed to make much of an impact. He in particular failed to sell the influencing the presidents's scenes, but then again I don't think any actor could sell those terribly written scenes.

Oprah I'd give a 2. Her character is written terribly because the wife character completely changes from scene to scene. Oprah fails to mend the different version of the wife, but again I doubt any actress really could have done that. But I did not feel Oprah played any of these sides particularly well either.

I would give Cumberbatch a 4.

Louis Morgan said...

Kevin: I think I know my fifth spot now, and it's not Rockwell. I liked Rockwell a whole lot though and I found it easy to engage with his character even though I found the film's pace intolerable. He'd get an easy 4.5.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: in your opinion, what is the best film based on African Americans

Louis Morgan said...

12 Years a Slave.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: are there any others, that come even close.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Funny, PoA has always been my LEAST favorite in the series due to Cuaron's direction. I haven't seen it in a while, so maybe that will change. I was just pissed about the lack of Marauders subplot and anorexic werewolf. My favorite movie in the series is ironically the least climactic: Deathly Hallows Part 1. Something about its foreboding feel and the fact it contains the best performances from the central trio wins me over. Also has Fiennes at his creepiest when he's just sitting down chatting.

Actually, I agree with you about the standouts. Staunton is my runner-up for 2007 Supporting Actress and O'Hara managed to act his ass off with facial expressions alone.

Michael Patison said...

Ooo now I'm interested for the alternate lead lineup even though it won't be started for some time due to Dern.

Luke Higham said...

Michael: I'm really hoping Dern is reviewed before the awards ceremony, for which there is a likely chance of it happening, since its dvd release is on the 25th of February.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Well since I'm not really all that much of Spike Lee's hamfisted writing style it does narrow the field a bit. There are probably some key films I haven't seen that are centered around African Americans though.

Kevin said...

Hey Louis, have you seen the film Before Midnight and its predecessors? If so, what are your thoughts on the films and could you possibly review Ethan Hawke for one of his performances?

Louis Morgan said...

Before Midnight is one of the big 2013 films I have not watched yet, honestly because I haven't watched the first two films.

Kevin said...

Well I would definitely recommend checking the trilogy out, they are all very well-acted and extremely well-written and just very good films.

Matt Mustin said...

koook: Deathly Hallows pt. 1 is my favourite as well.

Lezlie said...

1. James Gandolfini
2. Matthew McConaughey
3. Ben Foster
4. Sharlto Copley
5. Colin Farrell

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what rating would you give Daniel Bruhl in Rush.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: apart from your alternative lead lineup, what other performances, have you seen would receive a 4.5 or more from you.

Louis Morgan said...

Trying to narrow the field eh?

Anyway here are some of the performance I would give a 4.5, Christian Bale - Out of the Furnace, Tye Sheridan - Mud, Michael Shannon in The Iceman.

RatedRStar said...

I am hoping Bruhl will get reviewed, he was the most disappointing snub for me.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I fucking LOVE the Before trilogy. Granted, Sunset was a little pointless, but the other two are fan-freaking-tastic.

RatedRStar said...

RANT TIMEEE.

Daniel Bruhl could have been a huge future star and now he isnt going to be cause getting an oscar nomination would have put him on the map and now it fucking isnt because Fatboy Slim and Beardy weirdy have managed to steal his spot.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm glad he wasn't nominated so my blood pressure wouldn't go up from ranting about obvious category fraud.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what is your rating & thoughts on Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises.

Michael Patison said...

But let me guess, Louis, you're not going to review any of those performances, are you?

RatedRStar said...

Maybe you should rant about the 10 or 20 other actors that were nominated and placed in the wrong categories lol.

Daniel Bruhl was actually pissed off that he didnt get nominated, if some smug unfunny prick like Jonah Hill stole my spot I think id be rightfully pissed 2.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: I'd give Bruhl a four.

I'd give Tom Hardy a four. All I can really say about him is that I loved the voice, although he had the proper physical presence as well.

Michael: Well there is an abundance of strong lead performances for 2013, I can't review them all.

RatedRStar said...

Thanks for that Louis.

Michael Patison said...

I was only saying that as a hope (despite thinking Sheridan was terrific). Contrary to Luke, I don't really want to know who's going to join the other 4 until we get there.

JackiBoyz said...

I would give Bruhl a 2 or a 3 =)

RatedRStar said...

I have managed to be trolled four times in one day.

1. Captain Fucking Caveman appears on my screen grinning at me.

2.Koook160 then tells me that he is glad Bruhl is not nominated ahhhhh lol.

3. Louis then flat out tells me that Bruhl gets a 4, THANKS FOR THAT LUKE.

4. Daniel Bruhl gets a 2 or 3 from Jack NO HE DOESNT Jack lol.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Sincere Apologies, I didn't think Louis was going to comment on Bruhl.

RatedRStar said...

=D its ok lol im not moody about that or anything lol its amusing, I am a bit annoyed that Bruhl was snubbed by the oscars =D lol.

I am sure what would annoy me though, I hope Louis doesnt troll me for real haha when he get to um, that bloke.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Rains will win. I guarantee it.

JackiBoyz said...

I think 46 ranking will look like this lol

1)Harold Russell
2)Claude Rains
3)Lionel Barrymore
4)Henry Travers
5)Charles Coburn

Luke Higham said...

Jackiboyz: Is Harold Russell not second in the official ranking.

RatedRStar said...

NOOOO Jack, you are um...talking shit, Harold Captain Hook Russell will not be winning anything.

Luke Higham said...

Jackiboyz: or are you trying to piss RatedRStar off.

JackiBoyz said...

=)For giggles I might be lol, it would be amusing, if RatedRStar wakes up in the morning, logs onto his computer, goes on the blog, sees that Claude Rains has been changed to Harold Russell lol, even Louis might like that lol..

Michael McCarthy said...

This thread is slowly but surely becoming The Comedy Central Roast of RatedRStar.

JackiBoyz said...

I am only messing with him though lol and he knows it, he is actually a nice person in real life lol.

JackiBoyz said...

If you can believe it that is lol.

Michael McCarthy said...

Oh I'm are haha, it's just that when I read all those last comments that's what I thought of and I thought it was funny.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I was actually serious about the Bruhl thing. My policy is I would rather see the performance not nominated at all than in the wrong category, no matter how good the performance. That includes people like Casey Affleck in Jesse James, one of my all time favorite performances in my all time favorite movie.

Matt Mustin said...

No disrespect koook, but I CANNOT go with you on that one.

Michael McCarthy said...

Robert: I get what you're saying, but wouldn't you at least have preferred Bruhl being nominated to Cooper? I mean since really they would both be category fraud.

Matt Mustin said...

I don't think Cooper was category fraud. I mean, he didn't deserve to be nominated, because he sucked, but I think he's definitely Supporting.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I don't get upset over cases like Cooper where the lines a blurred on which category they belong. Hell, I consider Cooper Supporting. Last year Waltz I could see being a supporting role to some, even though I considered him lead. I do get upset when it's so painfully obvious that it hurts. Stuff like Bruhl, Gyllenhaal, and Forte this year are just painful to argue. How can you argue they're supporting when they have more screentime than the arguable "lead"? Okay, maybe not Bruhl as much, but he's obviously a deuteragonist.

Matt Mustin said...

Gyllenhaal is in Prisoners SIGNIFICANTLY more than Jackman is. Still, I'd say their co-leads.

Robert MacFarlane said...

He's got a good ten minutes over Jackman.

JackiBoyz said...

I think if Casey Affleck,Daniel Bruhl and Christoph Waltz had been campaigned for lead, I personally dont think any of them would have got in, so just seeing Affleck and Waltz get nominated is nice to see since they were great.

As for Daniel Bruhl, I did like him honestly lol, I know RatedRStar loved him but, I dont know I would honestly give him a 4, maybe the emotional personal side that RatedRStar has seems to help, like how he sometimes says he feels sorry for actors like Clift, Rains and Mineo who either died tragically or are often forgotten.

RatedRStar said...

It might sound weird but there are some others as well who I feel sorry for, ill give you the list lol.

Oskar Werner (he looks incredibly sad and unwell in his final interview, the fact his career never took off hurts too)

Richard Burton (he always knew he was never gonna win an oscar and was one of the reasons which eventually turned him to alcohol)

James Mason ( Only 3 nominations, plus he always looked very sad and scared in interviews, often forgotten)

Charles Laughton (The fact that he had to hide his sexuality his entire life is quite upsetting)

Leslie Howard (A war hero who fought and died for his country)

Alan Bates (He was bullied and taunted by the media for nearly all of his acting career for being gay)

RatedRStar said...

Oh and lastly.

Sal Mineo (He was such a lovely person, he boldly and courageously came out as gay and died tragically)

Montgomery Clift (After his car crash, his career was so heartbreaking, his appearance on Whats My Line, plus Judgement At Nuremberg is very sad as well, plus he hated himself for most of his life.)

Claude Rains (Never won an oscar, his A List movie stardom ended after Notorious, his daughter often spoke of his withdrawn dissapointment, he hated himself deep down, had over 6 failed marriages, struggled with alcohol.

Could you please review or at least rank Geoffrey Rush in "The Book Thief"?
