Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1975: Results

5. Leon Vitali in Barry Lyndon- Vitali gives a good performance being properly pompous but as well managing to be somewhat sympathetic by showing where his character is coming from.

Best Scene: Bullingdon duels Barry.
4. Charles Durning in A Dog Day Afternoon- Durning doesn't have much of a role, but he makes more than the most of it portraying the method of the police negotiator in a very compelling fashion.

Best Scene: Moretti tries to handle Sonny and the crowd.
3. Max von Sydow in Three Days of the Condor- Max von Sydow is excellent in his portrayal of the cold calculated killer who we absolutely believe when he says his job is refreshing.

Best Scene: Joubert warns Condor about his possible fate.
2. John Cazale in Dog Day Afternoon- Cazale once again gives a great tragic performance. He is terrific in creating both a danger in that violence bubbling underneath the man, but as well the sadness by earnestly showing just how lost his character is.

Best Scene: Sal asks Sonny if they will really kill the hostages.
1. Robert Shaw in Jaws- Good Prediction RatedRStar, Michael Patison, and JamDenTel. Although I loved the performances of Max von Sydow, John Cazale, George Burns and Burgess Meredith I did not have to think twice about who would be my choice for the year overall. Robert Shaw is amazing in the role of the Ahab like shark hunter Quint. He is outstanding every moment he is on screen giving an equally entertaining and heartbreaking turn. His delivery of the Indianapolis speech alone should have guaranteed him both an Oscar nomination and an Oscar win.

Best Scene: The Indianapolis monologue.

I know you will be doing Caine and Connery but can I recommend

Jack Nicholson in The Passenger
Gene Hackman in Night Moves
Roy Scheider in Jaws

Caine and Connery are shoo-ins of course. I'll also recommend:
Tim Curry in The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Roy Scheider in Jaws
Maxim Munzuk in Dersu Uzala
Graham Chapman in MP and the Holy Grail
John Cleese in MPHG
Gene Hackman in Night Moves

As for my recommendation, I really have no idea, so I guess I'll say Billy Crudup in Almost Famous for Supporting 2000. I also expect Philip Seymour Hoffman to be reviewed that year, but I consider them both nomination-worthy.

Also, #19 should be William Redfield not Dale Harding. Redfield portrayed Harding.

I agree with everyone suggesting Tim Curry.

I was going to suggest Robert Mitchum in The Yakuza, but I believe it's 1974 by tour rules.

@Michael: I LOVE Crudup in Almost Famous. In fact, he's the only thing I like about that movie.

Tony Leung Chiu Wai - Chungking Express (Best Actor 1994)

Gene Hackman - French Connection II
Roy Schnieder - Jaws

these would also be solid performances.

Oliver Reed or Roger Daltrey in TOMMY? I can't imagine Daltrey would get a very good review (and Reed is probably not in it quite enough to justify a lead nomination), but it's a thought.

Tim Curry in RHPS seems like a sound choice, if only for the iconic nature of the role.

You could go WAY out of left field and go with Yorgo Voyagis for the Palme d'Or winner Chronicle of the Years of Fire.

Maybe Charles Bronson in Hard Times (one of his more renowned roles, I believe)?

Graham Chapman's King Arthur?

Lastly, for something else obscure, how about Robert Strauss' one real tour de force as the only onscreen character in THE NOAH?

I'm glad we agree about Crudup, koook, though I must say I absolutely love Almost Famous and consider it my favorite non-LOTR movie of the first half of the decade. Literally it's only fault is the sometimes lackluster performance by Patrick Fugit in the lead.

I don't hate it, I just feel underwhelmed by it. Crudup quietly stole the movie for me. Though I'm not sure if my dislike for Hudson's performance stems from the Manic Pixie Dream Girl nature of the character or how she played it.

This is quite a bit after the fact, but what about anybody from Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

I just need to watch it again as I really do not remember much in terms of the performances.
