Overall, I'm quite content with the winners (managed to get 100% accuracy with my predictions!). "Three Billboards" would have been a more deserved winner for both picture and original screenplay (especially in the latter), nonetheless, "The Shape of Water" was also a great film, so no big complaints here. Very strong year for acting (apart from the supporting actress), although best actor should have gone to Day-Lewis (still, Oldman finally getting and giving a wonderful speech was worth it). I'm very happy with "Dunkirk" winning, I personally would have given it for the score, too.

As for the ceremony itself, it was pretty tame and boring (Jet-ski? Really? That was the best they could come up with?). To be honest, I was expecting more sex scandal jokes (especially regarding Spacey), but I suppose they wanted to play it safe and avoid anything raunchy. I probably loved the best the segment with Gerwig and Nanjiani - instead of focusing on a political message they appealed to the universality of film experience, regardless of any factors.

I think I'm the only one who's really surprised about The Shape of Water. Even though it was supposedly neck and neck with Three Billboards, I would have predicted Get Out and Lady Bird before TSOW.

I have no clue for predictions with these lineups :))

Overall, I quite satisfied with all categories this year. Although Three Billboard was way deserving for the best picture, TSOW is an okay winner. The only issue with the ceremony for me, well, sadly is the feminism stuff. It's like watching cliche after cliche after cliche, freaking boring and frustrated. Nevertheless, so glad that Oldman and Rockwell brought home the trophy they deserved :)

Outside of Peele, Deakins, and honestly Ivory, I was not a fan of most of the winners. I guess I’m glad Del Toro, Oldman, Rockwell, and Janney will have “Academy Award Winner” in front of their names now, I just wish it was for works I actually liked.

I'm gonna hold my predictions for now.

With the Oscars, i agree with Robert. I think Deakins was my favorite win of the night. At least Blade Runner got 2.

Well other than The Shape Of Water taking me by surprise and getting best picture, the oscars this year were fairly cut and dry. Oldman's the win I'm the least passionate about, but its still nice that he finally has one. I don't mind the other 3 acting wins in the slightest, nor do I have a problem with the majority of the awards on the whole.

Louis: I think you need to review Cassel's work for both parts, because it seems to be a similar case to Del Toro in Che.

Anonymous: Well, he could review him during the supporting round. Louis has reviewed Supporting performances in Lead rounds before. And Supporting Actor's fairly weak in contenders.

With the lineup that's been made, there isn't one that I would like to see taken out.

2018 looks pretty weak when you look at the film lineups, so many sequels, I hope there will be some surprises, I guess the thing about 2018 is that unlike last year where everybody knew Darkest Hour and Phantom Thread would be Oscar contenders, its hard to see where they are for 2018.

Mitchell: You can forget about Firth in The Mercy. It has already been released in the UK and doesn't look like it would have any staying power come next January. It's essentially another Railway Man(Career best), though whether he's better in The Mercy has yet to be seen. Honestly, I hope he could be a Supporting Contender for Kursk, Vinterberg could get the best out of him I think.

I would love to dream and fast forward to fall this year, Kingdom Hearts 3, and seeing Kursk have like a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with Matthias Schoenaerts a leading actor Oscar contender, a person can dream.

No as Streetcar was seen as an acting juggernaut. It took the vet to take down Brando, Winters was still a relative newcomer.

The two Mesrine parts had two separate releases so I will consider them as separate releases, like Nakadai in 59 for the Human Condition I and II. My review though will entail both parts. He will have two different spots though in the overall.

Nick Cheung was the one who competed for the best actor prizes, however I have not watched the film. I will before lead is over though, and I'll review Tse here if I feel he is lead.

Louis: Would you say that there are some similarities in Jake Gyllenhaal's and Nicolas Cage's acting styles? I could easily see Cage as Lou Bloom in the 90s and Gyllenhaal as Ben Sanderson in the 2010s.

Yes though Gyllenhaal seems to need to tap into that sort of kinetic energy, whereas it is this sort of raw madness with Cage that is always there to some extent.
