Calvin Law said...

GM: My Kerr and Moore review is up.

Luke: OMG, I think, this may very well be a masterpiece.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: It'll be such a bummer if Louis doesn't like it, since the Brits have been very positive, yet the Americans have been fairly mixed over it, but I hope his love of shakespeare wins through.

RatedRStar said...

Oh wow it does look darn good, is it too early to say 2015 alongside the likes of 1939 and 1962, maybe but its looking good for that comparison.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: In terms of films, potentially it's a maybe.
In terms of Lead performances, 2014 is too big of a hill to climb for this year. I hope Supporting does better though.

Kind of wish you'd been able to do Dano. There Will Be Blood is the only time I've ever found him to be anything special, and boy was he ever.

Calvin Law said...

That church healing scene is an AMAZING scene. I actually like Dano well enough as an actor, he has his missteps but I do rather like him in the likes of 12 Years a Slave, Prisoners, Ruby Sparks.

Also, he's apparently really, really good in Love and Mercy, the Brian Wilson biopic

RatedRStar said...

I think Dano is alright when he is playing completely sackless characters, I think he could do more though.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I thought Dano was fine in TWBB, just not AS good as others do.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I left off Foster's performance in 3:10 to Yuma, because Louis has yet to post his review.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I did have Fassbender and Gyllenhaal as 5s respectively for Frank and Enemy, but Louis's reviews did happen to give a slightly negative effect on my views of their performances, so they're now 4.5s.

Louis, what are your ratings and thoughts on Blake Lively in The Town?

Luke Higham said...

*Stuart: A Life Backwards

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I forgot about Eddie Redmayne's work in The Pillars Of The Earth, which is in fact my number 2 and his rating's a 4, bordering on a 4.5.

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: Understandable on Notorious, I think most people including Louis were somewhat underwhelmed by the film possibly, I loved it and feel emotionally tortured by the film, particularly the ending knowing that Claudes career died after that final scene.

Calvin Law said...

Luke: The Pillars of the Earth looks interesting, especially because it has my good pal Donald Sutherland in it, how is he there :D

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: He's only in the first 2 episodes, but he's very good with what he is given. His rating's a 4 overall, although he does deserve a rewatch, since it's one of my favourite miniseries.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Well, I do love Simon Pegg and greatly admire Robin Williams, so I'll give it a try, despite how bad it may be.

I think it'll be good. Decent, at the very least. I mean it's Pegg and Monty Python (essentially) and Robin Williams, no matter what it should elicit a few laughs.

But in all seriousness, as a Chelsea fan, I fucking hate Barcelona and having Luis Suarez in their team, doesn't help either. I will admit, that I love Lionel Messi as a player and would take him over Ronaldo any day of the week.
I'm sorry to tell you this but my love for Real Madrid has faded drastically, with their vile fans (Hissing Bale) and their idiotic president, I mean, who the fuck sacks Ancelotti and replaces him with Benitez is beyond me.

Calvin Law said...

RatedRStar: 'Tis fine. Well what can I say, simplicity sometimes is the best. It's actually a fairly straightforward film in terms of just story and structure, it's a series of conversations really, kind of like Brief Encounter really, but it's just so beautifully shot and acted that I fell in love with it, wholeheartedly.

RatedRStar said...

Michael McCarthy: That is a fair point =D

Slow West Ratings
Fassbender - 4
Smit-McPhee - 3
Mendelsohn - 3

I thought Testament Of Youth was a very good period drama, with excellent work again from Alicia Vikander.

Slow West was a fairly short but enjoyable enough Western with an entertaining performance from Michael Fassbender and a very well edited shootout finale.

@Calvin: Don't you like Juanita Moore in Imitation of Life? I actually preferred her to Kohner, who was quite good anyway.

Louis Morgan said...

Matt:

The Last Stand is uniformly underwhelming especially considering it's from the director of I Saw the Devil. The performances don't help though. Schwarznegger's work is tired. Whitaker is stuck in uninteresting exposition. Knoxville and Guzman are not particularly inspired in their attempts at comic relief. Noreiga could not menace a mouse, Stormare should have been the main villain since he is good as usual. Or hey it would have been awesome if it had been Harry Dean Stanton, instead it's another role of his where I almost want to yell at the filmmaker "Don't you know who he is!".

Luke:

I think I gave my thoughts on Gordon-Levitt before.

There Will Be Blood:

Dano - 4(I actually do like his performance in that I think it works for the most part. He gets the frantic energy of a vapid evangelical across, while carrying that pretension that he is of a nobler cloth. He's indeed very mannered, but I think it works well in creating Eli as the false prophet he is. He acts fake, because Eli is fake. Now I'm not going higher because Day-Lewis does overshadow him in every scene. I don't think it had to be that way. I mean think for a moment, Joaquin Phoenix as Eli. Although the church might have exploded in the baptism scene then due to the intensity of both actors)

Freasier - 4(A good performance that compliments Day-Lewis's very well. The two have a very authentic understated chemistry as you feel a certain distance, but also a warmth there as well. He also is quite in portraying the way H.W. closes off after becoming deaf, depicting the anger in the boy rather well)

O'Connor - 3(He's fine in playing a man doing kinda an uneasy con. I don't think he makes too much of an impact but he's good)

Hinds - 3(He's good and I would not have minded seeing more of him)

Howes - 3.5(He's really good in his one scene as I feel he presents someone who actually seems to be able to see through Plainview to a certain extent, and can actually match. He's not overshadowed by Day-Lewis and him dominating him in that scene is rather memorable)

Fox - 1(To quote side show bob "eghhhhhhh")

Anonymous:

12 Monkeys - (A very effective mind bending thriller as Gilliam creates a palatable sense of dread in a film less about changing the future but rather being forced into creating it)

The Song of Bernadette - (Standard in a few ways in terms of some of the story points. The cinematography, and just the spiritual feel of the film make up for this granting the power and poignancy the story needs)

Apollo 13 - (Well done survival procedural. As space epics go Ron Howard does not do anything new (I don't think he's capable of that), but it's a solid workman job)

The Usual Suspects - (The interrogation scenes are good, but really it feels like the twist came first then the rest came later. The actually crime story within the film is oddly routine, and not really very interesting)

Rebel Without A Cause - (It has its moments, but it's also too bombastic for its own good. It's kinda interesting as a time capsule of sorts, but it's not that good of a film)

The Miracle Worker - (Rather strong stage adaptation. I won't say it completely shirks its basis, but it does a great job of making it's story feel cinematic still. Not to mention it has two fantastic performances leading the way)

Tom Jones - (An underrated Best picture winner really. It's not anything great, but it's an enjoyable farce)

Lively - 2.5(She did not leave much of an impact on me either way. Not distracting in a bad way, but did not add too much for either)
