Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1936: Results

5. Frank Morgan in The Great Ziegfeld - Morgan strikes up an entertaining and eventually moving dynamic with William Powell as a similarly sarcastic showman.

Best Scene: The final scene.
4. James Stewart in After the Thin Man - Stewart is charming in his usual way, which makes it all the more effective when he subverts that in the film's final revelation.

Best Scene: All the suspects meet.
3. Louis Jouvet in The Lower Depths - Jouvet gives an endearing portrayal of a rich man's transition into becoming one of the poor.

Best Scene: The baron meets the thief.
2. Humphrey Bogart in The Petrified Forest - Bogart gives a strong performance that creates the menace needed for his big time bank robber, but also carries a palatable anguish reflecting the man's view of life.

Best Scene: His entrance into the diner.
1. Peter Lorre in Secret Agent - Lorre easily gives the most memorable supporting performance of this year giving a fittingly absurd portrayal of an absurd assassin. Bringing to life the flamboyant nature of the part in an entertaining way, while still realizing the chilling nature of the character in a most effective fashion.

Best Scene: The General finds out he killed the wrong man.

I saw Mad Max: Fury Road, It's my Number 1 pick for 2015 so far, The Action was exhilarating, The Performances were excellent, with a surprisingly good performance as well by Nicholas Hoult and was a blast from start to finish.
Ratings
Hardy - 4.5 (Although most of the focus goes to Theron, Hardy handled his part with ease, as a fairly silent bad-ass, with less lines than the other two main performances, but when he does speak, it's all the more effective. Love the voice too by the way)
Theron - 4.5 (Bordering on a 5, her best performance since Monster, although I haven't seen her in Young Adult, She's very effective in her portrayal of a more human, more desperate heroine, who wants to make her way back home)
Hoult - 4
Keays-Byrne - 3/3.5
The Wives - 3

Hum, I am expecting a win for Jean Gabin in Le Jour se Leve and Nakadai to be in the TOP 5 for Harakiri in 1962.

Luke Higham said...

I'd Put Mifune and Nakadai in those Top 10s for their performances in Sanjuro for '62.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Lawrence Harvey is WAY too low, man .

RatedRStar said...

I had actually forgotten about Sanjuro, I was doing this before I went to bed so I was being quick, I am certain Harvey wont finish in the top 5, that top 5 is almost guaranteed for lead.

There is no way in hell that Peter O Toole loses for 1962, Louis called it a legendary performance.

Louis: Ratings and thoughts on Pallette, Carradine, and Rains

Matt Mustin said...

Caught up with Age of Ultron. Really enjoyed it from beginning to end. My ratings and thoughts on the cast:

Downey-3.5(He could play Tony Stark in his sleep at this point, but he's still just so good in the role)

Ruffalo-4(My favourite of the main team. I thought he nailed every aspect and I thought he did particularly well with Banner/Natasha stuff)

Evans-3.5(He just is Cap at this point. Brings all the needed passion)

Renner-3.5(Bordering on 4. Glad he got the expansion, because he really comes into his own here)

Johanssen-3(Does what she needs to, and is completely solid)

Hemsworth-3(Thor's not that interesting a character, but Hemsworth is entertaining enough. I particularly love his reaction when Cap moves the hammer)

Taylor-Johnson-3(Pretty solid, actually. Not much else to say)

Olsen-2(Terrible accent, but beyond that she's just dull)

Spader-4(My favourite in the cast. I think the writing makes Ultron a little too goofy at points, but Spader's voice just oozes menace regardless. Great work)

Bettany-3.5(He's got such a great presence, and it was nice to see him "in the flesh", so to speak. He's got the right manner, and his last scene is great.)

Jackson-2.5(Slightly more than a cameo, but he always brings something to a film)

Matt Mustin said...

I should quickly note that I consider Downey lead, but he's right on the border.

Louis Morgan said...

Alright I'm back.

JackiBoyz:

1. Dillane
2. Christie
3. Allen
4. Harington
5. Turner

Michael Patinson:

Pallette - 4(Pallette's pretty good here, and should have been the one nominated by the film. Every scene he is in is a bit of nice fresh air, as he brings out the incisive quality needed for basically the one member of his family who is not a bit off. He acts well as an extra straight man to Powell, but as a straight man who's less willing to bear the insanity)

Carradine - 3.5(Carradine an entertaining heavy here, and that voice of his is always great to hear. He brings a nice bit of menace and is rather fun in portraying his character's demented revenge. His change of heart is a bit rushed, but I really did like his final scene where shows a nicer side to the character)

Rains - 3.5(I'd say a lesser bit of villainous Rains here, but since it's Rains it is still pretty good)

Luke:

Oh well in regards to Sea of Trees. I should reserve judgement before I see it, although already not caring for van Sant does not make that easy.
