Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1946: Results

5. Finlay Currie in Great Expectations- Currie brings the right roughness and heart to the role but still never makes that much an impression.

Best Scene: Magwitch comes back.
4. William Bendix in The Blue Dahlia- Bendix, despite the writing messing up his ending, gives an affecting portrayal of a man driven to moments of insanity due to his war experiences.

Best Scene: Buzz is bothered by the music.
3. Roger Livesey in A Matter of Life and Death- Livesey steals the film right out from David Niven and manages to give weight to the central romance of the film than the two performers portraying it do.

Best Scene: The doctor fights for Peter's life in the Heavenly court.

2. Henry Travers in It's A Wonderful Life- Travers gives a funny and quite wonderful realization of the pure goodness of his character.

Best Scene: George after visiting his mother.
1. Lionel Barrymore in It's a Wonderful Life- Good Predictions Kevin, Maciej, moviefilm, koook160, and  Jackiboyz. The year itself came down to one of my favorite depictions of a villain of all time against Claude Rains who manages to make the villain the most sympathetic character in his film. Both I think are equally good in their roles and I don't see how either could be better. In a way to cheat out of really choosing I'll just base it on their second films of the year. Rains was also great in Angel on my Shoulder whereas Barrymore was quite forgettable in Duel in the Sun.

Best Scene: George goes to Potter for help.

KoooK160: I wonder what dreaded performance you're going to come up with as payback for Carradine's Review & rating.

Michael McCarthy said...

Lead: Paul Muni in Scarface and Joel McCrea in The Most Dangerous Game

Supporting: Leslie Banks in The Most Dangerous Game.

Also, I apologize if you've already given this but what's your rating for Raymond Massey in A Matter of Life and Death?

Robert MacFarlane said...

I hereby request Keifer Sutherland in Pompeii for 2014 Supporting. My revenge begins.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Responding to KoooK160 Comment, Bonus review that one please.

KoooK160: an interesting choice, since the film itself is probably my biggest guilty pleasure of the year and yes, in my view Sutherland is just hilariously bad in it.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Oh yes, I believe he'll be getting the Zane Train treatment for this one.

Luke:

Rains - 4.5(Well I suppose Rains had to play the Devil sooner or later, because I mean how couldn't. It's funny especially an Angel on My Shoulder is kinda a subversion of Here Comes Mr. Jordan as both a bringing a man back from the dead but in this film it's for the service of evil. Rains plays the guide in both cases though, and he's a hoot here. Rains always can carry such a cool menace as he does here. He's also has some great comic timing in portraying the way devil revels in his evil scheme, but also his frustrations when things start to go badly for him)

Mitchell - 4.5(Mitchell is really great in a role where he does not have any scenes to himself but he brings so much life to the role anyway. Every scene he's in he offers something extra with his always remarkable reactions that don't steal the attention from someone else exactly yet still makes his character stand out in his own way. Also he should be given some extra credit for the scene where a drunk Uncle Billy seems to walk into garbage cans. It's a enjoyable moment but it's kinda even better to learn that Mitchell saved the moment through an ad-lib as the loud crash noise was completely accidental)

Michael:

Massey is a four I gave my thoughts on him in Livesey's review.

Michael Patison: When will you be posting your Interstellar review.

@Michael Patison: He gave his ratings/thoughts on Grahame in The Big Heat in his review on Glenn Ford in the same movie, and he gave his ratings/thoughts to Jean Simmons in Angel Face either in the Result Page of Best Actor 1953 or in the Best Supporting Actor 1953 opening post :)

Anonymous said...

Also I think he already gave his ratings/thoughts on Alida Valli in The Third Man, and if I remember correctly he said she was fine but overshadowed by the male actors in the movie, and he would give her a 3.

And he gave his ratings/thoughts on Lana Turner in The Postman Always Rings Twice in his review of John Barrymore in It's a Wonderful Life.

Maciej said...

Ok, so my request would be Chris Cooper in Breach for 2007 leading actor (I think there's still one slot left for this year. If not, do let me know, I'll name someone else).

Luke Higham said...

Maciej: There's 7 requests for '06 lead, so I'm sure he can do more than 5 for '07.

I will in advance say that my next winning request will be either Mads Mikkelson in Casino Royale for '06 supporting or Christian Bale in Rescue Dawn for '07 lead.

Michael Patison said...

Luke: Sometime this weekend. It turned out my paper was due on Thursday, so the reviews had to wait.

Anonymous: Thank you very much. I'm honestly just too lazy much of the time to go around looking at comment after comment to find what I'm looking for if it exists at all. :)

Louis: You can leave out:
Grahame in The Big Heat
Valli in The Third Man
Turner in The Postman
Simmons in Angel Face

Michael Patison:

Hunt - 4(She's rather memorable in realizing the weirdness of Miss Havisham. She has such a creepy quality about her whole soft spoken voice and seems as much of an antique as all that is around her)

Simmons - 4(Simmons is also creating in making the oddness of Estelle as she successfully leads Pip on while being so brutally cold at the same time)

Hobson - 3(Not really a natural transition from Simmons. Hobsons's okay but I feel that Simmons balanced the two sides of the role more effectively)

Miles - 3

Wager - 3

Sullivan - 3

Alright the Femme Fatale Lineup:

Tierney - 4.5

Bennett - 3(She has a really bland screen presence and both Duryea and Robinson overshadow her completely. I don't mind her so much here because he role doesn't require much I don't think she entirely fails to fulfill)

Savage - 2.5(I barely remember her performance)

Bennett - 2.5(Again Duryea and Robinson overshadow her. Here I thought she really failed to bring the right allure to rope in Robinson's character she makes it so Robinson's character was merely being manipulated due to her physical beauty)

Bacall - 3.5(I'll admit I'm not really a big Bacall fan but I thought she was fine here, and worked particularly well with Bogart here, which I would not say was the case later in Key Largo)

Vickers - 3.5(She's one note but I thought she was effective in that one note of a woman basically only interested in the simplest of pleasures)

Dowling - 3(A brief role but she's fine enough in portraying the shallowness of her character)

Hayworth - 3(Well she's as alluring as a woman could be, but past that there isn't much to her Gilda)

Gardner - 4(Like Hayworth she makes herself a woman to kill for very easily. Gardner brings a bit more of an edge though to her character though and is more effective in making her a true black widow)

Greer - 4.5

Peters - 3.5(I thought she had a good chemistry with Widmark and
was effective enough in portraying her own rather short moral transition)

Rodgers - 2.5(I felt Cloris Leachman was much more memorable in her one scene. I did not find Rodgers bad or anything, but it's not very memorable work)

I'm glad to have won the prediction contest after a long time.
My suggestion is Steve Carrel for Little Miss Sunshine (hope he hadn't been suggested yet)...
