I am fairly confident that Carney will win this and the overall, The Late Show was probably the best film of a shit year that is 1977.

1. Art Carney
2. Alberto Sordi
3. Jack Nance
4. Richard Dreyfuss
5. Harvey Keitel

Oh come on, 1977 is a decent year, Star Wars, Close Encounters, I assume you are not much of a sci fi chap eh?

RatedRStar said...

Equus, Julia, Annie Hall Overrated, The Turning Point, The Goodbye Girl, all poor films, the fact that you said Star Wars and Close Encounters are decent rather than amazing or legendary pretty much confirms my thoughts on 1977.

Louis: Your rating & thoughts on Mark Hamill in Star Wars and James Coburn in Cross of Iron.

RatedRStar: Oh, I agree that Julia and Annie Hall are overrated. Equus is downright awful, as is The Turning Point. I have a soft spot for The Goodbye Girl but I guess that's just me, haha.

Personally I like Julia (great performances by Fonda and Redgrave) and Annie Hall (Keaton was amazing). And there are some other strong movies such as A Special Day (Loren and Mastroianni at their best), A Little Average Man (amazing performance by Sordi), Looking for Mr. Goodbar (again, an amazing performance by Keaton) and Star Wars. I don't really care for Close Encounters of thr Third Kind though.
Predictions:
1. Sordi
2. Carney
3. Nance
4. Kietel
5. Dreyfuss

Louis what are your ratings & thoughts on the main cast of Star Wars?
Of course, we already know your opinion on Alec Guinness.

Mark Hamill
Carrie Fisher
Harrison Ford
James Earl Jones/David Prowse
Peter Cushing
Peter Mayhew
Anthony Daniels

I didn't include Kenny Baker because he didn't do the beeps and boops himself and all we saw was a garbage can moving around. That's not acting.

Also I should point out, I think 1977 has good films, it just I think, particularly at that years oscars there was far more bad, than good, The Turning Point getting 11 nominations is just, hideous, and the fact that it was probably the favorite or second favorite to win best picture given its golden globe win

RatedRStar said...

I think I was perhaps a bit harsh of The Goodbye Girl, I like Masons performance in it, and it has a nice heart to it, and I will say, I liked the crowds reaction to when Dreyfuss won he got one of the biggest cheers ever which is great when compared with some of the recent oscar win cheers (Jean Dujardin barely got a reaction lol when he won)

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I think being the youngest lead winner at the time, was probably what contributed to that response.

Louis, you know you would give a 5 to Simone Signoret in Room at the Top, but can I have your thoughts on her? Because I've just seen the movie and I thought she was quite good but underwhelming and not Oscar-worthy, so I'd like to hear your point of view on her performance if you don't mind.

@RatedRStar: The HK film awards are quite funny to watch too haha, you can who everyone loves and hates quite easily

My favourite Oscar speeches ever are Adrien Brody's, Jeremy Irons', all of Daniel Day Lewis', I may be in the minority but I really liked Jane Fonda's. And Joe Pesci of course haha. I also liked Cuba Gooding Jrs one even if i disagreed with the win.

Least favourite is Jennifer Lawrence and George Clooney's. 'Nuff said.

Kevin said...

No hate shown for Melissa Leo's speech? I thought it was absolutely fake and insincere

Louis can I have your thoughts and ratings on:

Lee J. Cobb in The Song of Bernadette

Henry Travers and Hume Croyn in Shadow of a Doubt

Al Pacino in Scarecrow

Brian Dennehy in Cocoon

@GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar: I disagree about Jennifer Lawrence's speech. I thought it was nice and spontaneous. I know you don't care about her as an actress, but for me she's great.

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

@Anonymous:Oh well, these things are always quite subjective aren't they, haha. I do ratherlike her in some roles like Winter's Bone.

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

I don't know what happened with the font there lol

Anonymous said...

@GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar: ahahahhahaha what happened with that fonts? Ahahahahaha anyway I love her in Winter's Bone, she's brilliant, and I also liked her in everything I've seen from her (including American Hustle, she was great for me). But I understand totally why some people don't really like her.

Going back to post not long ago, some people might think that the 2014 contenders for best actor will all get 4.5 to 5 ratings.

I dont think they will, at least not all of them, I am certain Louis will dislike at least one of them, I wonder who it will be though?

RatedRStar said...

Louis and everyone else on the blog, can I ask, who do you think it will be, I know we havent seen the contenders but, who have you got worried feelings for, in my opinion I think Benedict Cumberbatch is the one at the moment I am most worried about being bad.

Anonymous said...

Mh... I don't think that Cumberbatch could be bad... Maybe nothing too special, but not bad. I think that Eddie Redmayne's performance as Stephen Hawkins may be the one I'm worried about: he seems good from the trailer but it's a very tricky part.

Luke Higham said...

I think Cumberbatch will get no less than a 4 for The Imitation Game, since Louis gave him the same rating for The Fifth Estate, which was one of the most underwhelming films of last year. I can understand your view on it, since I do feel a King's Speech vibe to the film itself, but I'm sure he'll be better than Colin Firth's performance as King George VI in that film. Eddie Redmayne in The Theory of Everything, is the one that really worries me. Other than that, Carell, Keaton & hopefully Spall will be guaranteed 4.5s at the very least.

I hope 2014 is equal or at least close to the bar set by 2013, 1962 and 1939, I personally dont think 2013 was the best year ever for movies I think people are just saying that so they can say that they were alive when the best oscars happened, I think 39 has the most star studded films and its the year where nearly every nominated film was good, and 62 simply has the best films I think, with many many classics that are still popular to this day as well underrated gems like Billy Budd and Days of Wine and Roses.

Luke:

Hamill - 3.5(I do think he makes Luke a likable and endearing hero in the film. I do feel he probably overdoes the eagerness and naivety of him ever so slightly in the early scenes. Nevertheless I do feel he does a solid job of portraying the maturation of the character depicted in the later scenes)

Anonymous:

De Niro - 2.5(I should say that the film as whole did not work for me. De Niro's performance I felt had a certain creepiness particularly in his earliest scenes. The problem is De Niro doesn't have an innate warmth or even necessarily that much of a charm so to speak. Although I think probably found him more charming in roles where he played far less savory characters. It also does not help in that I really did not see any chemistry between the two leads. It's an interesting experiment for both Scorsese and De Niro, but not one that I felt was a success on either front)

Scott:

Fisher - 3.5(It's interesting to see the audition footage as it becomes apparent that Fisher was the only one right for the part. The reason being, despite being the damsel in distress, she never plays it as such. She always plays the part with such a strong defiance)

Ford - 4(His peak with the character was in Empire but he's quite good here as well. In terms of differences from that performance though Ford is effective in that he is a little colder as Solo at first, and does his short character arc rather well)

Jones - 3.5(Prowse certainly does his job but there isn't anything that unique about his physical movements. Jones's voice work though is essential to the menace and the tone of the character)

Peter Mayhew - (Perhaps his movements are somewhat unique, a kudos that it never feels like just a guy in a suit either. He didn't do the sound though so no points for that)

Anthony Daniels - 2.5(I've never minded his performance that much in that he suits the role of the constantly worried individual just fine. In terms of both his voice and short robotic movements. I must also admit that I've never found him to be that funny though)

Anonymous:

Signoret - (I've always felt her performance, although supporting, was a beautifully rendered piece of work. I love her almost otherworldly allure she brings to her performance, but similarly she's terrific in portraying the more down to earth suffering her character is forced to endure)

Anonymous:

Cobb - 4(Cobb has a small role but he brings so much conviction and dramatic weight in his two monologues. Cobb easily should have gotten the nomination over Bickford)

Travers and Croyn - 3(They are an enjoyable double act as it is fun to see both of them play such wimps who love to argue about murders)

Pacino - 4.5(Certainly one of his most underrated performances. It's a very interesting against type of performance by Pacino since he plays a fairly lighthearted guy. Pacino though is completely believable at this bringing such an energetic and delightful presence with his performance. He also has superb chemistry with Hackman, and his breakdown at the end is very well done)

Dennehy - 3.5(Dennehy's quite good with his delivery where there is something off about it, but not in the way you would think. He very cleverly suggests the alien nature of his character, yet manages still brings such a well earned poignancy when it is demanded from him)
