I heard he once said the only role he could be offered that would bring him out of retirement was Dumbledore in the Harry Potter films...I would've loved to see that.
I hope that if there's a heaven, Alec Guinness is there to comfort him about everyone remembering his work in a blockbuster near the end of his career over countless other performances.

I watched some clips of his work in 10 Rillington Place. Absolutely marvelous.
