Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2011: Results

5. John Hawkes in Martha Marcy May Marlene- Hawkes combines effortlessly a charming and threatening personality in his portrayal of a cult leader.
4. Viggo Mortensen in A Dangerous Method- Mortensen gives a strong performance as Sigmund Freud succeeding well in creating the charismatic and persuasive personality of the man.
3. Bryan Cranston in Drive- Cranston even with his limited screen time creates both an enthusiastic as well as tragic presence in his film.
2. Brad Pitt in The Tree of Life- Pitt gives an astonishing performance and fully realizes his character despite limitations created by the direction of the film.
1. Mark Strong in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy- Strong wins this year for me, even with Brooks who on re-watch I still love, and  would give a 5, but he is no longer my favorite of the year. That goes to Strong even though it is close very close among the top three. Strong is my favorite though who gives an absolutely masterful performance, there is not a wasted moment or even a single facial gesture in his portrayal.

What kind of rating would you have given Cheadle and Cumberbatch?

Also, for 1947:
Kirk Douglas in Out of the Past (the only one I can really think of)
You could also do Finlay Currie in Great Expectations since Magwitch is such an iconic character. Or somebody from Brighton Rock or Shoeshine (Sciuscia).

I'd probably give both 4.5s. Great Expectations and Shoeshine actually are both in 46 by my system so the list is even smaller. I think I might just do an overall rank for 47, but I still want to cover it.

how do you mean ull do it differently, a surprise perhaps? =D

Kirk Douglas - Out Of The Past
Finlay Currie - Great Expectations
George Sanders - The Ghost and Mrs Muir
John Garfield - Gentlemans Agreement

umm no idea lol this is a strange year, I cant think of anyone else,

also have you not seen We Need To Talk About Kevin Louis? with Tilda Swindon and her shock oscar snub and Ezra Miller.

Kinda surprised Strong won the whole year, although after reading your review I probably shouldn't be. What would you have given Kingsley in Hugo and Rickman in Harry Potter?

Louis Morgan said...

I would give them a 4 each.

Unfortunately, Robert Forster gets stuck with the worst line in The Descendants: "Strange, Elizabeth in this misfortune as you're coming into your fortune."

God, what a terrible line. And I really like the film otherwise. But that line is crap.

I would pick Brad Pitt, easily but to each his own. :)

Oh dear, I haven't seen any of them.... :(

But it's great to read your thoughts on those performances.

oh I forgot the performance I request (since I won 74) is Leonard Whiting for best actor in Romeo And Juliet (1968)

Aaaarrrggghhh!!!!! How did Pitt not win?!?! He was the rock of his film! Don't get me wrong, I thought Strong was fantastic, (and while speaking of TTSS, glad to see Tommy in the top 5) but Pitt simply went above and beyond for me.

Seth Rogen in 'Take this Waltz' was a great overlooked performance.
