I really hope we get a 5 from this lineup.

My FTW list will be up by tonight.

Love years like this, a hidden gem could be hiding anywhere =D.

Calvin Law said...

From this lineup I’ve seen Pryor and Gould today who were both terrific, I’d give both 4.5s and I’d say both their films are hidden gems.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: What did you think of Plummer.

Calvin Law said...

And Plummer is definitely a contender for supporting.

Calvin Law said...

Luke: he was great and it’s like nothing I’ve seen him in before. Pretty camp and grotesque and I imagine he had a lot of fun in the role.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I really hope that will be the role that gets the 5 that has eluded him for so long.

Gonna try and watch McQueen tomorrow.

Louis, what are your thoughts on the Safdie's features Daddy Longlegs and Heaven Knows What?

Calvin Law said...

Luke: it’s not a 5 performance I think since it’s fairly one-note (though I could be wrong) but I’m almost certain Louis will like it at least as a change of pace for him.

Just a random side note: I just caught a little bit of "Her" on TV, and I'm now even more disappointed that Phoenix won for "Joker".

Louis: What would be your 80s and 90s casts for "Open Range"?

Bryan L. said...

Mitchell: He gave that 80s cast in Johannes Krisch review for Revanche.

Luke: I saw Excalibur last night btw.

Mitchell Murray said...

Speaking of that, Bryan, I will try to watch "Excaliber" at some point tomorrow.

Let me try the 90s Open Range cast

Boss Spearman: Richard Farnsworth
Charley Waite: Harrison Ford
Sue Barlow: Sissy Spacek (Although that sounds TOO easy)
Denton Baxter: James Coburn

Luke: I should note that I'm not really a big fan of fantasy (besides LOTR). That said, I liked Excalibur. Great production design and dug Boormans' direction, with the action scenes being a highlight. A bit overlong for my tastes, but I still enjoyed it. I'd give it a 4.

I'll agree with your ratings, especially Williamson.

I don't think any of these guys can take De Niro down. But I really wanted Mcqueen to win a lineup.

Louis: Your top 10 Ethan Hawke performances, and your updated top 20 acting moments of his? The latter list was given before you had seen First Reformed and Before Sunset/Midnight.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Could you also watch Movie Movie. Barry Bostwick did fairly well with the critics that year.

Bryan: What would you personally give McQueen and Durning in An Enemy Of The People.

Anonymous said...

Louis, could you watch Bloodbrothers (Adapted Screenplay nom) and The Wiz.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Lastly, could you watch Stevie with Glenda Jackson, Ebert described it as one of her best.

Louis: Speaking of the Before films, could I have your thoughts on the "pretend" telephone conversations from Before Sunrise?

It looks as if Lead Actress will be stronger than Lead Actor for this year.

Bryan L. said...

Luke: You're welcome, in regards to Excalibur :)

In regards to McQueen, I think it's an interesting performance to discuss because it's both within-type for him (his usual strong screen presence) and against-type (it's dialogue-heavy, he has a climactic speech, and...well...he looks different). 4.5

I'm glad you asked about Durning, because I believe he's a good candidate for the Supporting round, as I liked him just as much. 4.5 too.

Mitchell Murray said...

You know something guys...having had a day to reflect on the performance, I'm actually going to bump up my rating for Kathleen Turner in Body Heat.

I haven't been that enamored with her before, BUT I will happily give credit where credit is due. Not only do I think her style/delivery fits the noir genre, I was also just genuinely intrigued by the portrayal. It is a good balancing act for Turner in that she is sultry and charming, but also keeps the mystery of Matty's true feelings properly guarded.

But yah..I just thought I'd share that with everyone here.

Luke Higham said...

Bryan: I wouldn't be surprised if he only reviews Plummer and Durning because Supporting's really low on potential 4.5+ contenders and I've only got Bostwick down as well who's an unknown quantity.

Anonymous said...

Luke, are there any performances outside the lineup that could pull a surprise 5, ala Brandauer as you would say.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Volker Spengler in In A Year Of 13 Moons and a bit of a longshot in Richard Burton in Absolution, who we all know Louis is very mixed on.

Luke Higham said...

But no one's toppling a Career-Best De Niro.

Yes, I tend to try to catch up with any Oscar nominated films I've missed, well in major categories, don't always catch up critically reviled "best song" nominees for example, though I will see The Wiz given its abundance of nominations. Although if its a major category (acting, screenplay) I try to watch them no matter the reception.

Luke:

Intend to watch Movie Movie (Scott got a Globe nom), and Stevie (Jackson got a globe nom, and Washbourne got a BAFTA and Globe nom),

Tahmeed:

A great scene that very much shows the charm of the film in a single scene, in that we get a bit of humor in the interactions of both, from her accent, to his not so great French, but also get a sense of their chemistry through their mutual "evaluations".

Rewatched Fargo Season 2, which is indeed one of the greatest seasons of television of all time, UFO included. Watching it again though made me appreciate certain performances all the more, so here's my revised top 10 for the cast:

1. Dunst
2. Woodbine
3. Wilson
4. McClarnon
5. Smart
6. Danson
7. Plemons
8. Offerman
9. Donovan
10. Milioti

Richard Jordan or E.G. Marshall for Interiors I think could be worth looking in supporting, also Dudley Moore in Foul Play got a Globe nomination for supporting, his entire scene is on YouTube and he is fairly entertaining in it.
