Overall, I'm very happy with this lineup. Grant and Gleeson were a very pleasant surprise and though I do love Rylance, I'm happy to get thoughts on him now and I'm sure he'll be in contention again.

Luke:

Ford - 4(This is probably going to be the most surprising rating given my affection for the film but I do think this is a good performance from him. I would say though there is his final scene for example where I just wanted a little more from him, even though I found it very moving in terms of conception, and Gosling's part of it anyways. Ford's isn't every bad in his Deckard reprise, and I'm glad he is consistent in his portrayal of Deckard which is not as the comical grump. He keeps that more somber approach, though I don't think he completely matches his original turn, but again minor quibble. He does well as expected in his first scene with Gosling in granting the emotion to his exposition, and is pretty great in his scene with Jared Leto. His reaction towards the replicated replicant is remarkable in the moment. It's a good performance, but it just was not a great one for me.)

Reilly - 4.5(Although admit a couple of these partially stemmed from me not really wishing to re-watch the film. Reilly though deserves all the credit for the effort and life he brings to Kong. His role is technically largely there for an exposition device, and although he manages to do that well with a lot of humor and style he goes far beyond that. Now he makes the humor even work in his role by properly showing that his character has gone a bit mad at this point. He manages though to find a real pathos within this fairly broad character finding some real emotional material within his moments of remarking on the character's journey with his former enemy/friend in the Japanese soldier, and his own desire to return home to see his family. It's a terrific performance that makes the film as a whole much more tolerable than it would have been otherwise.)

Keaton - 4.5(One of the best Marvel villains, and much of this actually comes from Keaton's performance that brings out the most out of what complexity in the character. Honestly to me all the best scenes of the film were with Keaton out of costume. Whether that be just finally getting to do his "wanna get nuts?" scene from Batman in context that makes sense, and doing it in all his glory in only a way Keaton could do, the twist moment where Keaton is great as he plays the whole scene just as a devious father who just wants to give the date a little bit of hard time though all in good nature, and then in the car ride. Keaton is outstanding throughout that scene as he completely conveys through his performance how he figures out who Spider-Man is, and does it with such delicious menace. He even manages to give some substance to the motivation of the character, even if cut short, in bringing a real earnestness to when explaining his situation to Spider-Man. Great work, as to be expected, from Keaton.)

Louis Morgan said...

Rylance - 4.5(Dunkirk is all about the moments within the performances, that are not given a lot of time yet need to make an impact. No one does this better within the film than Rylance who gives such wonderfully understated work that conveys in every moment the man's real urgency even as he maintains a proper front for much of it. I especially love his scenes with Murphy as he delivers so passionately yet so calmly this man's determination and recognition of their duty in the way. His most powerful moment is incredible as Rylance so naturally breaks just for a moment when they're going to save the pilot, and in that he shows the real grief in the man for his lost son.)

Shannon - 4(Watching the film for Jenkins's review got me thinking that this character was a little bit of a missed opportunity. In that I think if you had cast someone who came off as more fitting to a truly typical man of the fifties like a real Charlton Heston or Gregory Peck type then slowly broke him down throughout it could've been something special. Shannon, God bless him, just comes off as at least a little naturally unhinged so it's less of a transformation. Having said that it is still effective work from him as he delivers such vicious insanity that he goes from a little crazy to fully blown crazy as you'd expect, and makes for a striking big bad wolf for the story.)

Mitchell - 4.5(The best part of the film without question as he manages to give genuine emotion to every facet of the story. This is in the scenes of the intensity of the war that weighs so heavily in the man, and effectively brings this to the later at home scenes in a more internalized fashion. That internalized fashion that seems to encourage his willingness to confront the local racism. He is equally strong in his scenes with Hedlund, and I'd say wholly steals every moment between them. Mitchell though just finds such a honesty in every interaction in portraying this certain solace in his being as he finds a kindred spirit within their mutual trauma. I'll never know how Mary J. Blige could coast to a nomination without Mitchell receiving a single notice.)

Greenwood - 4.5(Greenwood in his early scenes, as he's alive that is, and that is not a spoiler, he is pretty good at being just an intolerably condescending jerk with an underlying creepiness that slowly grows until his death. Afterwards though Greenwood is terrific in acting as the occasional additional voice in the "game". Greenwood is quite effective in finding this diminishing tone in that he suggests overtly as though he is offering some encouragement but is in fact again this condescension though only of an even crueler form than what was seen before.)

Calvin Law said...

Woah. Did not expect only a 4 for Ford, though that's also what I'd give him. Glad you loved Reilly, Mitchell, Keaton and Rylance.

Also, have you checked out Kermode's review of Phantom Thread? He's seen it 4 times, by golly. I have to wait till next week to see it but I sure am looking forward.

Betsy: Brie Larson/Margot Robbie
Sport: Michael Pitt/McAvoy if he isn't Travis

Calvin:

Loved that review, probably one of my favorite positive reviews he's given in awhile.

That would have been much preferred for Skull Island.

Luke:

Paddington 2, much like the first one, is such effortless delight from beginning to end. It shows how one properly goes about doing such a family film as it has a purity within its style as its more overtly comedic moments, and just every so slightly dramatic ones so naturally flow from one to other. Of course it helps that the film is genuinely funny bringing some of the best slapstick you'd see in any film, but amplified with a real wit throughout. Just a lovely film in every respect.

Whishaw - 4(Loved his voice work even more this time, as it just so perfectly matches the character in every sense. He manages though to really find so much of the comedy through his elegant and joyful delivery. I had particular affection for "I know I look like a hardened criminal" as the most gentle bear you'd ever see. There's a bit more to his work though in bringing the few slightly dramatic moments there with the same elegance that never thwarts the comedic elements either.)

Bonneville - 3.5(He has the less to do this time around, even when compared to Hawkins. He's enjoyable once again though in bringing such classic comedic energy through his disparaging and slightly grumpy attitude throughout. Bonneville finds just the right tone once again for Mr. Brown and is just hilarious once more.)

Hawkins - 4(Once again so very delightful in the role though this time she's the one who gets a bit more to do. She brings so much charm though in her amateur sleuthing scenes, and is just effortlessly entertaining within them. She captures the right casual comedy within this particular sort of dogged determination particular in her scene of expressing the evidence and pondering on the testimony of a parrot.)

Capaldi - 3(A true enjoyable grump once again as to be expected.)

Harris & Joslin - 3(They are both fine once more though they both have far less to do.)

Walters - 3(Splendid enjoyable work from her mostly though just for her overly intense faces she gives to Grant's Phoenix throughout the film.)

The Prisoners - 3(All very funny in their own small ways, and actually this film makes a better use of Noah Taylor than Free Fire did. They're overshadowed by Gleeson, but not in a bad way.)

Calvin:

Not bad at all.

Luke:

As much as a love a good candy colored prison uniform, my deepest affection of the costumes comes with Grant's wardrobe. Every one of his ensembles is just sheer perfection fitting for a "proper" actor. They are marvelous though no matter the era, or function each one is memorable in their own right standing with such vibrant detail within every thread of it. It's stellar work there.

The Production Design, I'd have to put on one of the major snubs of the year. Yes it does reuse a bit of the great work from the first one, but it expands far beyond that. The work in the carnival is some of the best the year particularly the beautiful gold extravagant organ. It goes beyond that though in just finding sort of that perfect in-between in making tangible places but with right touch of fantasy to them. Whether that is the prison, the prison kitchen, the trains or especially Phoenix's house there, there is a real attention to such beautiful detail making every single place contribute to such a wonderful atmosphere, perfect for the film.
