Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2012: Results

5. Ronald Cheng in Vulgaria - Cheng is easily his film's highlight in his hilarious and appropriately ridiculous portrayal of an over the top gangster.

Best Scene: Dinner time.
4. Cillian Murphy in Broken - Murphy gives a funny, moving and above all very honest portrayal of just unassuming teacher accidentally getting involved in some rather difficult situations.

Best Scene: Apology
3. Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Gangs of Wasseypur - Although the film mutes his impact Siddiqui gives an effective and affecting portrayal of a man forced to become a gangster when you do see him.

Best Scene: Somber victory.
2. Bradley Whitford in The Cabin in the Woods - Whitford gives a very funny portrayal of a white collar worker who just happens to run a murder factory.

Best Scene: The merman.
1. Thomas Bo Larsen in The Hunt - Bo Larsen gives a terrific performance that is essential to the film as he finds the complexity of the man who condemns but eventually forgives his best friend for a horrible, though false, crime.

Best Scene: The Church.

Tony Curtis is not lead.... he doesnt appear until the second half.

Shoes of the Fisherman might be worth checking out with its all star cast of Laurence Olivier, Oskar Werner, Anthony Quinn, Vittorio De Sica, Leo Mckern and John Gielgud.

Funnily enough this year will contain Oskar Werners first ever snub since the supporting lineup this year is so so strong.

So glad Walken is your win now. Also, I'd like to suggest
Charles Bronson in Once Upon A Time in the West
Burt Lancaster in The Swimmer
Malcolm McDowell in If

Louis: Seeing as I have a request stored up, I'd like to request Soumitra Chatterjee in Apur Sansar (The World of Apu) for 1959 Lead.

RatedRStar said...

I am gonna be the evil cynic here and say I dont see any reason why Charles Bronson should get reviewed for a strong year when he has already been scored, rated and given thoughts on =D.

Calvin Law said...

But it's such a wonderfully complex performance RatedRStar :)

The Scalphunter fellas, Triningant, Curtis, and Bronson.

RatedRStar said...

Calvin: But its already here lol, its been rated and scored " Oh I wonder what score Bronson will get, will he get a 3.5 nooo" lol.

So potentially we have people that will miss out, and not get reviewed or seen at all lol, how is that fair haha?

Calvin Law said...

Louis could just do it as a bonus review, if he wants. It's his choice in the end, and if there's new performances that intrigue him more then he should go with them.

RatedRStar said...

I dont mind really I am just being banter filled =D.

Also, Scoot McNairy in Argo and Wood Harris in Dredd.

Calvin Law said...

And damn, this is Walken's 3rd win!

Varun: Louis, Gangs Of wasseypur is supposed to be one fI'm. The distributions decided to separata it because of the lenght.

I truth belive you would appreciate part Two more. If you watched part one, i prefer part one.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: And rating & thoughts on Emily Blunt in Looper.

Luke Higham said...

I'm pleased Fassbender moved up a few spots. :)

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Are you seeing Alien: Covenant on Friday or Saturday.

Calvin Law said...

Louis: your top 5 Chris Evans acting moments, and could he move up in the 2013 lead actor rankings for Snowpiercer?

Luke Higham said...

I must admit, thinking about it some more and Alien: Covenant might just be my favourite Fassbender performance.

Álex Marqués said...

I knew Baruchel would be at the bottom of the list, he was absolutely terrible (as always).

Vincent Price in Witchfinder General

Tony Curtis in The Boston Strangler
Burt Lancaster in The Swimmer

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Curtis is supporting.

Calvin Law said...

I liked Baruchel a lot in Tropic Thunder but I'll agree he's otherwise very lacklustre.

I also saw Lost City of Z, it's good, Hunnam is REALLY good and so is Pattinson. I don't think it wrapped up perfectly but the execution overall was pretty darned impressive.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: Will you be seeing Alien: Covenant sooner than later.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Are you gonna watch If...., O Lucky Man! and Britannia Hospital back to back.

Deiner said...

Louis: Thoughts and rating on Aubrey Plaza in "Safety Not Guaranteed".

Calvin Law said...

Luke: was going to see it tonight, but change of plans, will probably see it this weekend.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Your 2010s cast for Alien and Aliens.

Calvin Law said...

Elizabeth Debicki is a must for Ripley, and maybe Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Parker.

Calvin Law said...

I'll just go ahead and do my own version of Alien 3

Ripley: Elizabeth Debicki
Dillon: Mahershala Ali
Clemens: Clive Owen

Charles H said...

Excellent that Walken now has the win.

Charles H said...

Suggestions.

Peter Sellers - The Party
Malcolm McDowell - If...
Jean-Louis Trintignant - The Great Silence
Max Von Sydow - Shame
Burt Lancaster - The Swimmer

Anonymous said...

Louis: Your cast for a 1950's version of Alien.

Anonymous said...

-Max Von Sydow/Shame (You need to watch more bergman my friend)

Charles H said...

I'd say it's about time a great Bergman performance gets reviewed.

mcofra7 said...

On that note, I would recommend seeing Winter Light for Gunnar Bjornstrand when you get to 1963

Luke Higham said...

Tom Hollander won the BAFTA over Jared. :(

Luke Higham said...

Charles: Louis did give a five to Bjornstrand in The Seventh Seal.

Calvin Law said...

Von Sydow is a great shout actually, I need to watch it too.

I mean I liked Hollander but winning an award for it seems a bit much, Hugh Laurie was kind of easily the standout supporting actor in that.

Luke Higham said...

If I had to take someone out, it would be the Scalphunter guys, because I would really hate to see Vincent Price miss out.

Calvin Law said...

:/ but Davis and Lancaster are perfect in The Scalphunters! Although yes, Price definitely needs a review.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I have seen Lancaster & Davis and they're both fantastic but this year's so competitive that I'll be pissed off, no matter what happens.

Luke Higham said...

Fuck, give us 10 reviews.

Price
McDowell
Lancaster/Davis
Lancaster
Trintignant
Bronson
Von Sydow
Mifune/Marvin

Charles H said...

Luke: I would adore 10 reviews.

Luke Higham said...

Good thing is, he'll just have to watch 8 instead of 10 films.

RatedRStar said...

Benedict Cumberbatch has lost another bafta, does Benedict hold the world record for most male Bafta Tv nominations without winning, its starting to get quite silly lol no wonder he never turns up lol

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: He did turn up tonight though.

Luke Higham said...

Does anyone have any reservations with 10 reviews for 1968 lead.

RatedRStar said...

Yes I just noticed he was sat behind the winner lol, but you know what I mean, how has he never won????

Robert MacFarlane said...

Wait, Hollander won the BAFTA for THAT performance?

Luke Higham said...

Robert: Yup. :(

RatedRStar: The popular favourite never wins.

RatedRStar said...

I wonder what our reactions would have been if we were all watching the Oscar ceremony for 1968, I think my reaction to Benedict Cumberbatch losing today would be the same as everyones reaction to Peter O'Toole losing, a massive WTF.

Luke: Ben Whishaw won for The Hollow Crown and Mark Rylance won for Wolf Hall so I cant truly agree with that.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Rylance was 99.9% winning that year and he didn't have the popularity from the casual fans as say Cumberbatch or even Hiddleston.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: If it was down to the public, they would've gone with Elba.

Giuseppe Fadda said...

As for 1968, I loved the two leads from The Scalphunters, particularly Davis. Savalas and Winters are really good in that as well.

I suggest you watch Twisted Nerve. Hywel Bennett's performance is really quite memorable, maybe not quite perfect but it's definitely something at least interesting to watch. I remember George C. Scott also being rather effective in Petulia, although Julie Christie and Shirley Knight are the ones I remember most from that movie.

Also, I suggest you to watch the Stolen Kisses, not really for the lead performance (the standout of the cast was Delphine Seyrig who is unforgettable in her small role) but just because it's a wonderful movie.

Michael McCarthy said...

Psifonian: Small world, me too. Can I ask what chapter? Or if you'd prefer to discuss this in a way that won't flood this comment page (I get really excited about Sinfonia) you can find me on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/michael.mccarthy.9231

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Could Clancy Brown possibly go up to a 4 for Highlander.

Charles H said...

Is Tatsuya Nakadai a 5 for The Human Condition II.

Luke Higham said...

Charles: He's a 4.5.

I'm going to suggest him for '61 with A Soldier's Prayer, but if it isn't a five, then Louis will probably not review him anyway, based on what happened with Von Sydow in The Emigrants.

Charles H said...

Luke: I'd give him a five for A Soldier's Prayer, but i have a feeling it will be a Sydow/Emigrants situation.

Luke:

Riseborough - 3.5(I was quite amazed by just how thin this movie was. Riseborough does her best though but her best is just matching that he character always needs to be slightly fearful and emotional. It never ever lets her get into the meat of the things, a little like Theory of Everything honestly. She does this well, but it always seems quite thin due to the writing and seemingly the direction.)

Owen - 3(His usual presence was all there was to his character. Luckily he has that which is notable, but it was odd how little was given to him. When something is dropped, a romantic element, I was rather surprised by just how poorly conceived the film really was.)

Wilmot - 3.5(Better in that he just needs to be villainous which he does well and actually adds a little something more. In that he brings a passion that alludes to the character fighting for what he believes is something more even though the film does not focus on that.)

Gleeson - 3(He does his best but is there to be moving in the interrogation scene, which he is in just portraying the physical/emotional trauma, then coldly detached in the ending which he again does well. The writing though handicaps him severely.)

Gillen - 3(Again I liked what he brought in just only as performer as there was nothing really to his character as written but Gillen himself at least made something out of it.)

Cohen - 2.5(There are funny moments but really you could breakdown all of the best moments of his performance and the film into just a few five minutes sketches.)

Reilly - 3(The passionate love of Billy Elliott he brought was easily the funniest thing in the film for me.)

Mantzoukas - 3(He has some funny moments with Cohen in fact the moments that work in the film are usually between the two of them.)

Kendrick - 3.5(One of her best performances quite honestly as she manages to actually make her character likable which is quite the accomplishment given how obnoxious she is as written. Kendrick though allows one to give her behavior oddly enough a pass.)

Camp & Snow - 3(Their slightly dramatic moments are well handled actually which makes their funny moments actually much more amusing since they are more from left field.)

Wilson - 2.5(Not horribly obnoxious but her shtick gets a little old.)

Devine - 3(Mildly amusing)

Astin - 3(Mildly charming)

Platt - 2(Eh)

Oram & Lowe - 2.5(I'd say I definitely don't love Wheatley as a filmmaker as his style can get a bit overbearing at times. I found it particularly hard to deal with it here with these two extremely unlikable characters played in an extremely unlikable fashion. Well you know that's fine if they're still compelling in someway but I really found them rather flat.)

Lynskey - 4(I liked her performance quite a bit because she successfully avoids falling into the cliches of this sort of indie character. She never makes her desperation over the top or ridiculous. She grants a more low key reality and she's effective by showing it not to be the end of the world but also certainly not a good thing either. In turn her gradual change is particularly well earned though the chemistry with her co-star isn't quite there.)

Abbott - 3(He's good in that he brings a certain charm to the role and avoids being obnoxious as his character easily could have been in the wrong hands. I will say though that his chemistry with Lynskey isn't quite there.)

Simpson - 3(An entertaining brief diversion from him and he has a lot of fun with his character's over eagerness without falling into caricature.)

Brannigan - 3(He doesn't really make a great impact as a lead but he works just fine as just normal guy even if you don't become too invested in him.)

Louis Morgan said...

Allam - 3(He's enjoyable just in playing his character as curiously shady even if he's really not up to anything substantial.)

Healey - 3.5(His performance works very much as the creep but it goes further in that he is able to convey that certain persuasive quality in his voice by his combination of a gentle urging with a more palatable menace.)

Camp - 3.5(Camp's performance just works in portraying the very specific and very unnerving peer pressure of sorts along with he fallout shame that comes with it.)

Oyelowo - 3.5(Oyelowo fairly charming in his brief screentime though there is not much of him he's good when he is there.)

Caine - 3.5(Again his chemistry with Bale is a notable point and he actually builds upon what was seen in the previous films to offer the most emotional resonate element in the film particularly in his final breakdown.)

Gleeson - 3(His role is pretty limited but he's good in portraying the fitting constant distressed state as the mere henchman, showing he's indeed a victim rather than a collaborator.)

Kinnear - 3.5(For much of the film he's just the gruff father though he does that well though by portraying the disjointed affection with his angry outbursts showing that there is a certain heart behind his hate. He's terrific though in the final scenes of the film first in portraying the genuine grief of his character's suffering then his moment of clarity by doing the right things for once.)

Alien:

Dallas: Patrick Wilson
Lambert: Elizabeth Olsen
Brett: Tracy Letts
Kane: James McAvoy
Ash: Martin Freeman

Aliens:

Hicks: Boyd Holbrook
Burke: Miles Teller
Bishop: Nikolaj Coster-Waldau
Hudson: Adam Driver
Hope: Lucas Black

I'll accept Calvin's choices for the others.

I probably will see Alien Covenant sometime during the weekend.

Maybe in regards to Clancy Brown.

Calvin:

Evans:

1. Cannibalism story - Snowpiercer
2. Verbal Face off with Tony - Civil War
3. Refusing to fight - Winter Soldier
4. Trying to save the day - Sunshine
5. showing his collection - The Iceman

He could.

McNairy - 3.5(He stands out the best out of the staff members just doing well to realize his individual plight along with his wife's plight quietly and effectively. Even when the film sets him up almost as the jerk he manages to at least show very much where the guy is coming from in his honest delivery.)

Harris - 3.5(A performance that one shouldn't overlook as he manages to really give a lot of humanity to his villain, though not by lightening up on the villainy by any means. Harris's performance though really suggests a guy outside of this situation and is not there just to be killed by Dredd.)

Deiner:

Plaza - 3(I found her the most tolerable thing about the film just because she does have a good comedic timing and managed to avoid becoming a complete cartoon. I did not love anything about the film but I will say she at least provided some emotional grounding to the proceedings though not quite enough to make the film even tolerable for me. I will say watching this film someone must stop him before its to late for Star Wars 9.)

Anonymous:

Alien 1950's:

Ripley: Janet Leigh
Dallas: Gig Young
Lambert: Jean Simmons
Brett: John Carradine
Kane: Dirk Bogarde
Ash: Cyril Cusack
Parker: Woody Strode

Charles:

4.5

Luke Higham said...

I really am worried about Trevorrow.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: There really needs to be 10 for this year.

Charles H said...

I have to agree with Luke on this one.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Blunt - 3.5(I will say I do think the whole farm aspect is where the film gets lost a bit and really gets a little too stuck there. I also would not say Blunt is exactly wholly believable as the farmer mamma at the casting stage and I don't think she completely overcomes that. I do think she is good in portraying the motherly affection aspect, though I would say there is something a little missing with her chemistry with Levitt as well. Then again this whole aspect of the film I think does hinder the whole thing, she's good within her part of it though.)
