Gotta watch/rewatch some of these soon.

Louis: thoughts and ratings for the cast of Ex Machina...and the film itself.

1. Grant
2. Nakadai
3. Guinness
4. Leaud

I would also suggest watching Our Man in Havana, and Hiroshima Mon Amour, as thinking about it it's the direction and lead female performance which makes those great films.

Also my own personal top 5:

1. Stewart (5)
2. Stockwell (4.5, his first half of the performance is incredible but the film focuses away from him later)
3. Grant (4.5)
4. Guinness in Our Man in Havana (4.5)
5. Leaud (4.5)

Oh I could so see Nakadai stealing it from Grant, it looks 5 star material but I will play it safe, as for Franciosa I reckon he will get 2 Nicholsons =).

I actually love lots of anime especially serious thriller types =D, DBZ would be my fave as a child although it has quite a lot of bad things in it looking back, I always found Pokémon to be slightly better than Yu-Gi-Oh purely because the characters were slightly more tolerable and the stories wouldn't as confusing, and the theme song was ace for Pokémon I must admit.

Louis, what are your top 10 Olivier performances? Would you classify The Entertainer as a subtle performance?

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I reckon it's gonna be
1. The Entertainer
2. Sleuth
3. Hamlet
4. Richard III
5. Rebecca
6. Spartacus
7. Marathon Man
8. Wuthering Heights
9. Carrie
10. Henry V

Luke: I think Rebecca should be third and Marathon Man fourth.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: From The Lead nominee rankings, the top 5 that I've chosen (Entertainer to Rebecca) are exactly the same, whereas on the supporting ranking Marathon Man is '59. But thankfully, those rankings are now defunct as they've been hard to keep track of and have become quite a mess.

Haha just #2-5 count.

Anyway, I expect Grant to get a 5. Guinness could be 4,5 or a 5 (given how much Louis likes him), Stockwell, Leaud and Nakadai will also likely get a 4,5. Now Franciosa (the original Tommy Wiseau), I just don't know about it.

Michael McCarthy said...

Franciosa was a strange actor, but he wasn't the original Tommy Wiseau. There really can only be one Tommy Wiseau. Ever.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I don't know, Louis said awhile back that there was one really great performance in North By Northwest and I expect that to be James Mason.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Which reminds me, I have a few suggestions for Wiseau Week if you ever do that, Louis.

Nicolas Cage In The Wicker Man
Jon Voight in Anaconda

Some ones to keep in mind:

Stephen Boyd in The Oscar
Tony Bennett in The Oscar
Eddie Redmayne in Jupiter Ascending
John Travolta in Battlefield Earth
Ryan O'Neal in Tough Guys Don't Dance
Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd
Armand Assante in Judge Dredd

Luke: Yeah, but Louis must have changed his mind. Grant and Mason could likely get fives.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I do hope they both get 5s, as I'm very much into making statistics for the blog and Kurosawa has the most 5 star performances under his direction with 17, while Hitchcock has 15, so I hope they end up tying, momentarily anyway, since I'm confident that either Mifune or Nakadai, will get a 5 for Sanjuro.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I'm taking a risk on Nakadai, but I honestly don't mind losing this prediction, as I still have loads of time to get the requests I want.

Michael McCarthy said...

I actually slightly preferred Nakadai to Mifune in Sanjuro, I'd give the former a 5 and the latter a 4.5. It's still a really good sequel though.

Anonymous said...

Franciosa was a lucky guy to be cast in movies. It's like some guy watched him perform on stage and said to him: You know what? You're an amazing actor. You are awesome at overacting.
Franciosa's overacting is definitely more painful than Paul Muni's. Muni could be natural, with Chain Gang. If only he gave more natural performances...

Anonymous said...

Louis could probably give Mifune a 5 and Nakadai a 4,5.

Luke Higham said...

Michael McCarthy: Well, I did say either. I preferred Nakadai as well.

Anonymous said...

But I think I would give them both 5's since they were amazing.

Robert MacFarlane said...

The thing about Franciosa was that he was selfish as an actor. He always tried to "steal the scene" away from the other actors with his antics. That's why he always came off as hammy. A *lot* of actors hated him for it, too.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Mifune's a 5 as well, though I preferred his performance in Yojimbo.

Psifonian said...

Calvin: I don't really rate performances; feels weird to quantify something like that. But I quite liked him, Dillman and Welles. They made fine Cannes winners.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Has anyone seen It Follows? Because I just saw it and really, really dug it.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: It's apparently the best horror film of the year, so I'll see it eventually. Your rating & thoughts on Maika Monroe and ratings for the rest of the cast.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Well, really outside of Monroe (a 4 by the way) none of them standout. It's very much a director's film. It's more about atmosphere and craftsmanship than character.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: Thanks. :)

school time, that's what I meant.

Robert MacFarlane said...

HehehehehehehehehahahahahahahahahahaHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Anonymous said...

God, I so hated it. But of course, the girls loved it so much. They loved the acting particularly Ansel Elgort, who they claimed made them cry.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: How dare they. :( What did you do to deserve that torture.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Hanseland Gretelgort will be irrelevant in a few years time.

RatedRStar said...

Yes Robert I have seen it, I thought it was solid =D, it was certainly an interesting film with creepiness, and the actings fine too, I didnt find it truly scary but it was filled with a rather tense feeling.

I have yet to see Nakadai but I will because he is a wonderful talent, Ye as I said um Nakadai could easily win =D so I wont be surprised if he does, but as for Franciosa, I am puzzled as to why he won the globe but wasnt nominated for an Oscar, is that a rare sign that the Academy were actually smarter than the globes? maybe it will be a surprise, somebody on this blog said Franciosa was good in Career, but I see not a Wiseau score, but just a boring 2.5/2 score.

As for Cary Grant, the reason I predict him to win, is that although Nakadai will probably get a 5, and the other nominees are very good, haha Louis you are smart, I reckon you know what the major problem with Richard Burton's performance was =D, I voted for Grant because this for me is his last chance to win. I feel Olivier will easily win 1940 so.

Anonymous said...

Luke: My teacher just happened to have it. The girls were so amazed at Elgort's pre funeral speech at the end of the movie that they claimed he should have won an Oscar. And of course, they loved Woodley's acting, their role model, along with Jennifer Lawrence.

Luke Higham said...

Elgort's the most intolerable actor in the world, bar none.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL! What has the world come to.

RatedRStar said...

There is a better chance that I will actually kill myself than Elgort winning an oscar lol.

Luke: During school time, I was also forced to watch some American movies in Brazilian Portuguese, including American Pie 4. My friends loved it so much they named it the greatest comedy ever made. I just can't stand watching movies in Brazilian Portuguese. I had one girl in my class who loves watching Adam Sandler movies and another class who reads Twilight.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I thought the Jonas Brothers were Irrelevant nowadays and fuck that turd Justin 'BJ' Bieber.

Anonymous said...

During eighth grade, I was forced to watch Grown Ups. I vowed to never watch another Adam Sandler movie. Poor Pacino, poor Hoffman and poor Nicholson, they all starred in movies with that unfunny Sandler.

Anonymous said...

The whole Jonas Brothers thing happened when I was in fifth grade. If that Bieber retard killed someone, his fangirls would probably defend him.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Apart from Punch-Drunk Love, he undoubtably sucks. To be honest though, Pacino, Hoffman and Nicholson were at fault as well by taking a paycheck and phoning it in.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Definitely.

Anonymous said...

Luke: But I can understand why they now star in comedies (well Nicholson hasn't done anything since 2010). Because of their method acting technique and they're old. Those method actors take themselves too seriously. Method acting is supposed to be natural, but they often phone it in. I would love to see Hackman return for another movie, but sadly, he's retired. Duvall, at least tries to do something with the scripts he's given.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Agreed.

Anonymous said...

The reason why Twilight became such a success I don't know. My stepmother had an edition of the first book and recently she had a baby boy. Anyway, Stewart is an example of natural acting at it's worst. Heck, here in Portugal, we had two vampire series called Red Moon and Immortal Destiny. And guess what? They got inspiration from Twilight! You can call these series: Portuguese cheap imitations of Twilight.
I imagine that the creators of those series saw the films and they were like: OMG! This is awesome! I-I got to make a series about these. Guys guys. I got this awesome idea! Why don't we make a series about vampires. I got inspiration from that awesome film called Twilight!
And the TV guys were like: Sold! Now what we need is to hire good-looking actors who can't act to save their lives! It's the perfect series to get more ratings!
Heck, the main character of Red Moon is called Isabel (Isabella/Bella).

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous, RatedRStar, Calvin and anyone else: As much as you hate Twilight, What would you've done to make a great series of films out of it. This concerns choice of director, actors, target audience and even the technical aspects as well if you wish.

Calvin Law said...

Luke: Haven't given that much thought but come to think of it, I think Supporting Actor will be strong overall with many 4.5 and 4's, and strong 3.5's, but I think only about 3-4 5's.

Psifonian: Thanks :)

Anonymous said...

Luke: Heh, I would rewrite the characters and hire actors who can actually act. I would target it to teenagers and adults. But my colleague who had an edition of Twilight loves The Exorcist. I would recommend Louis to not see the worst exorcism films ever. One that I saw that made me cringe was a combination of The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby. The other one was shot like a documentary.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: That's almost every young adult film in abundance, where studios couldn't get proper talent involved, though I can't blame anyone who didn't wish to be anywhere near that poisonous filth.

Calvin Law said...

Source material is inherently flawed but I'll try my best. Directed by Robert Rodigruez.

Bella: Jessica Alba
Edward: Danny Trejo
Jacob: Antonio Banderas

I know I'm talkin shit but come on, much better film already!

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I'm still sticking with 6-7. I could see it being a '65, where you had 2-3 from 2 films.

Luke Higham said...

Calvin: I'll make a bet with you. If Louis hits and stays at your target, then I'll do anything you wish of me, but only the once, (A film that could be complete torture for me to watch) whereas if Louis hits my target, I want you to start work on the Cromwell head to head. :)

Anonymous said...

Calvin: Meh, Alba? Trejo and Banderas? Seriously? Real actors would be great.
Luke: Anyway, those demon possession movies I saw were downright terrible. In this film (The Exorcist and Rosemary's Baby combined), the main actress was just as terrible at emotions. So, the plot was simple, really. The Devil wants to plant its spawn on the girl, weird things happen, the exorcist fails to save girl, the Devil wins with the spawn born. It tries so hard to be scary that it's hilarious. The effects are so unconvincing even Ed Wood would laugh. It had a budget of 200,000. When the girl is possessed, she is trying too hard to look scary but fails soooo hard. When she wakes up at hospital at the end after being hit by her douchebag of a boyfriend, we see these fiery red eyes. Oooh, so scary, movie. So scary. Just don't waste your time.

Now they are making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie with live-action and CGI and it's going to be dark and edgy. My, my, I think that movie will instantly fail. Movies based on video games suck in general.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Well, their is some hope. You've got Assassins Creed with Fassbender and Cotillard, with Kurzel to direct. (The fact that Macbeth got really good reviews at Cannes) that makes it a quite possible shining light through the nonstop garbage of unimaginative Video Game Films and Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy.

Anonymous said...

This dark and edgy Sonic movie they're working on is the film Sonic fans have been waiting for. It will come in Sonic's 25th Anniversary. Lately, Sonic has had two terrible games and the fans want a Sonic Adventure 3, claiming it would save the franchise.

Anonymous said...

Assassins Creed with Fassbender and Cotillard? That's promising. But it could turn out bad, I think. But Mike and Marion will somehow get a good performance out of the terrible script they've got to work with. Splinter Cell with Tom Hardy? When is it coming out?

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: No Chance. Sonic couldn't make a successful transition to 3D and Sega have failed time and time again. Sonic (2006) was Abysmal and the film's surely gonna suck as well.

Anonymous said...

Have you played SA1 and SA2?

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: The script could be decent enough, who knows. =)

It's still in development, but will come around 2017-18, I guess.

Anonymous said...

Luke: Are you referring to what? The scripts of those games?

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I watched walkthroughs of both years ago and I played one of the originals on the Sega Mega Drive in the late 90s - early 00s.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: I was referring to Assassins Creed. Also, it's a passion project for Fassbender and he will have producing duties as well, and that's pretty much why I've got high enough expectations for it. I'm calling it now, it will be the first very good video game film and the very best for that genre in general.

Anonymous said...

Luke: There's a YouTube channel (TrueSonicSpirit) and a Facebook page who are demanding for a Sonic Adventure 3, when they already got one in 2006. They are absolute dickheads and claim that they are sane fans, when they're simply insane. The Sonic fanbase is very infamous. They claim that Sonic has been ruined since 2010 with Sonic Colors, a light-hearted Sonic game. Most of those people in that channel/page are absolute poison. They claim that Sonic games were for everyone until that year. Shadow the Hedgehog (2005), that abomination of a Sonic game was intentionally made for older audiences. SEGA and Sonic Team said so. Those idiots even defend Sonic 06 because it had an epic story. Just because something's epic, doesn't mean it'll end up like Lawrence of Arabia.

Anonymous said...

Luke: Oh, ok. I understand about Assassin's Creed now.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Their's always gonna be fanatics in all forms of entertainment. Political Correctness has brainwashed everyone.

Luke Higham said...

Not exactly everyone, if you get my drift.

Anonymous said...

Luke: One female member of the Sonic Adventure 3 Facebook page seriously wants to be the CEO of SEGA. She said that she doesn't care about gameplay and only cares about story. If Sonic Adventure 3 came out and had terrible gameplay and great story, she would claim it's a great game. One of the members of that poisonous page is a raging Italian monkey called Al Jerico/Daniele Mulas/Danidado. He is probably the worst asshole of that page. He wants Sonic games to have a mature story, but all he does is whining and bitching like a little child.

Robert MacFarlane said...

"Political Correctness"? What does that have to do with anything?

Luke Higham said...

Robert MacFarlane: Apologies for going off track here. My problems are only due to the current conflicts in the world.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm just wondering how that has anything to do with bratty fanbases on a half-dead video game series. Like, get angry on online movements that are terrible. Like Gamergate.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: It was completely unrelated, I do not wish to bring it up again.

Anonymous said...

Luke: The fanatics make normal fans look bad. On IMDB, there are numerous message boards about Jennifer Lawrence, Shailene Woodley...etc. I saw a Judy Garland fanboy who was a huge worshipper of her. He acted as if she was some kind of angel. I really hate it when people treat act movie stars like gods and angels. Brando and Olivier are pretty much gods to millions of actors around the world. Audrey Hepburn is an angel to most people for her humanitarian causes. Even though I don't like Gregory Peck that much as an actor, I found it touching when he recited Unending Love after she passed away.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: I sometimes do use the wrong choice of words, Forgive me.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I don't really see the point of getting upset with fanbases who are in their teens. They'll grow out of it in 5 years.

Anonymous said...

Robert: There's a reason why people get upset with fanbases. Because they complain about certain things and they are cynical to get the things they want.

Anonymous said...

Robert: They should simply just chill out and be positive in order to get the games/movies they want. Complaining and being negative won't solve anything.

Robert MacFarlane said...

They're dumb teenagers complaining about something insignificant in the long run. Unless they're doing Gamergate tactics of harassing people and sending death threats, don't sweat it.

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: Shenmue 3 made $6'000'000 on Kickstarter and I think that was a case of people being positive.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: What are your top five anticipated films for 2015.

Anonymous said...

Luke: Yes, I know that.
Robert: Sending death threats is something that almost every fanbase does. Sonic fans sent death threats to the voice actors and story writers. I heard a story that when the wife of one of the voice actors for the games died during childbirth, they told the voice actor he deserved it because they didn't like his voice.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Um, let me think.

Calvin:

I quite liked Ex Machina and it would easily be my second favorite film of the year though that's not saying too much at the moment. It creates its oppressive atmosphere quite well along with realizing the mystery involved with the relationship in an effective fashion, but it also had a certain element of humor that was well utilized. It's a good film and I have to say I wish Alex Garland had directed his own screenplays before instead of Danny Boyle.

Gleeson - 4(He could easily go up on re-watch as it is common for the younger Gleeson's work to grow on me. I have to say it's pretty great that he manages to get a surprising amount of leading roles. Gleeson technically speaking has the thankless role simply because he's the character we know, and are suppose to know what to expect from. Even so Gleeson does well to make this nebbish nerd type feel wholly honest, and never does his awkwardness seem like that of a caricature. In turn the revelations of the story leave expected reactions from his character but Gleeson delivers these all in a genuine way that's rather moving when things get dark)

Vikander - 5(Excellent work from Vikander, as it's terrific performance as she should give away the twist but she hides it so well. Vinkander in her early scenes of interaction is marvelous in the way she is human like though super human in her delivery and eye contact, everything is technically too direct too swift for a normal person with insecurities. It never comes off as off exactly even though it is. Then as the conversations continue, as well as the extra in the dark conversations, Vinkander is wonderful in her sweetness and love she seems to project. It is all perhaps too much though, but she fools you and Gleeson's character believably because it just seems to good to doubt. She's too perfect though why doubt perfection, her deception is flawless. This leads her to be quite chilling in the final scenes because she so bluntly reveals the machine, even though we always saw it physically, when Vikander reveals it emotionally it is extremely disconcerting.)

I'll save Isaac for the moment.

Olivier Top Ten:

2. Sleuth
3. Rebecca
4. Marathon Man
5. Hamlet
6. Richard III
7. Spartacus
8. Wuthering Heights
9. Henry V
10. Carrie

Well I suppose it depends on your definition of subtle. I would say it is though since even in his flamboyant scenes where he does his vaudeville routine Olivier always suggests what's going beneath the skits as well.

The Fault in Our Stars was a dreadful movie, and Elgort's leading performance was equally terrible. Shailene Woodley though was really good, the only saving grace along with Dern. To be honest, I also think the book was awful. I really hope Paper Towns will be better, I liked the book and Cara Delevingne looks quite intriguing.

RatedRStar & Robert: I just like to let you know that I have a minor form of Asperger's Syndrome and that's probably why I had that awkward moment last night.

Luke: Its ok =D

I will have to see some of those films to give my own prediction on them as The Hunt and A Royal Affair are the only 2 I have seen and I would give Mads a 5 and a 4.5. I do have Don't Look Now on dvd and will see it eventually.

Southpaws Oscar chances are getting smaller and smaller as that RT rating shows lol, I will see it this week at some point if I can.

RatedRSatr: I really disregard the scores on Rotten Tomatoes nowadays. It seems to be at an 8.2 on imdb, at least the last time I checked.

RatedRStar: Inside Out Or Southpaw. Which should I choose. :)

RatedRStar: Your thoughts on the Spectre trailer.

RatedRStar: :( Bad news, I won't be able to watch next year's Oscars live. My mother's cancelling our Sky Subscription.

Luke Higham said...

56% on RT. Harvey, you said it was gonna be Gyllenhaal's year and it blew up in-your-face.

RatedRStar said...

Oh I don't always agree with RT scores, but I will say it certainly does effect Oscar Chances just like with Unbroken being a recent example of a film getting mixed reviews and failing to break into big Oscar categories, plus this film is getting released very early and needed to get really great reviews (Grand Budapest) in order to make a big play for Oscars, Jake might have a chance maybe, but the film is doomed to get in other big categories

Luke: I think its looking pretty good so far, although I am not quite as excited about this as I was about Skyfall.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I have the same feeling, My biggest problem with the trailer was that Waltz should've been kept to a bare minimum.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Can you rank all the films, you've seen so far this year from best to worst.

I don't think Spectre will be as good as Skyfall, but I think it'll be entertaining enough.

@ruthiehenshallfan99: Except IMDB votes are from (A. People who haven't seen it, and (B. users who wouldn't know good film analysis if they tripped over it.

Louis: Your rating for De Niro in Bang The Drum Slowly.

Luke: Hey, Luke. What do you think of stories in video games?

Luke Higham said...

Anonymous: The quality of storytelling has declined over the years, due to multiple sequels and half baked new IPs with few exceptions, such as Uncharted, The Last Of Us, Rockstar Games and The Witcher Series. (Assassins Creed is a guilty pleasure of mine as well).

In Your Opinion, if their's any other games with great stories, then remind me, as I'll probably agree with you.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm not sue if I'd really consider Rockstar games all that triumphant in storytelling so much as gameplay. If you want a great story from a game, I recommend Spec Ops: The Line.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: I love the story in Red Dead Redemption and Spec Ops: The Line was brilliant in my opinion.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: I forgot about Mass Effect as well, The first two anyway.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Well, I'm talking more the immature nonsense of the GTA series in terms of bad story.

Luke Higham said...

Robert: Fair Enough.

Luke: Final Fantasy, The Walking Dead, Mass Effect, Paper Mario and Metal Gear Solid are considered to have great stories. Sonic has always been hit and miss in the storytelling department. You see, SEGA and Sonic Team produced two Sonic games (Secret Rings & Black Knight) that got mixed reviews, but were praised for their story. I think that's the reason why SEGA and Sonic Team rarely focus on story nowadays. The story writers are criticized for lack of knowledge of Sonic characters and story, and the use of juvenile jokes (even though Sonic Battle had some juvenile jokes). SA1 and SA2's stories were written by a Japanese guy called Shiro Maekawa, who even wrote Sonic 06, Heroes Secret Rings and Black Knight. This guy to many fans is the equivalent to Shakespeare and Kurosawa in video game writing. Looking back at those stories, I find them pretty average with plot holes and such. Maekawa isn't even a writer to begin with, he's a guy who started voice acting for a game in 1995. But anyway, a game doesn't need a story to be great. Yeah, sure you can throw story into it, but it doesn't exactly needs it. Sometimes, we rarely get a balance between great story and great gameplay.

I have an Information meeting in the morning, so goodnight. :)

Luke:

I'd consider Vikander supporting since except for the ending she does not really exist outside of Gleeson's perspective. I'd give De Niro a 3.5.
