@RatedRStar: Have you seen A Taste of Honey, by the way, if not you should check it out, espcially for the performances of Rita Tushingham and Murray Melvin, I remember you liking kitchen sink dramas like Billy Liar and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner.

@GDSAO: Can you give your female winners also? Anyway:
1950 (All About Eve/Mifune in Rashomon/Sanders)
1951 (Streetcar/Brando/Malden)

1955 (Marty/Ernest Borgnine in Marty/Raymond Massey in East to Eden)

1958 (Vertigo/Stewart/Ives in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof)
1959 (Anatomy of a Murder/Stewart/Scott)
1960 (Psycho/Burt Lancaster in Elmer Gantry/(undecided))

Louis: Your rating & thoughts on Jodie Foster in Taxi Driver.

I believe that, when you initially gave De Niro a 5, you pretty much, bought into the hype at the time and ignored a couple of reservations you had with his performance.

@Anonymous: Interesting choices, especially Singin' in the Rain, I really need to re-watch that.

Sure.

1950 (Gloria Swanson in Sunset Boulevard/Josephine Hull in Harvey)
1951 (Vivien Leigh in A Streetcar Named Desire/Kim Hunter in A Streetcar Named Desire)
1952 (Mandy Miller in Mandy/Edith Evans in The Importance of Being Earnest. I should also note that 1952 is an incredibly competitive year for me, I give Howard the win in Lead but very close behind him are Ralph Richardson in The Sound Barrier, Shimura in Ikiru, and Canada Lee in Cry the Beloved Country)
1953 (Joan Fontaine in The Bigamist/Deborah Kerr in From Here to Eternity, I know I'm cheating a bit here but I really think she's supporting)
1954 (Eve Marie Saint in On the Waterfront/Thelma Ritter in Rear Window)
1955 (Deborah Kerr in The End of the Affair/Betsy Blair in Marty)
1956 (Deborah Kerr in The King and I/Anne Baxter in The Ten Commandments)
1957 (Patricia Neal in A Face in the Crowd, but Kerr in Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison and Joanne Woodward in Three Faces of Eve are close/Elsa Lancaster in Witness for the Prosecution)
1958 (Ingrid Bergman in The Sixth Inn of Happiness/Kim Novak in Vertigo)
1959 (Simone Signoret in Room at the Top/Lee Remick in Anatomy of a Murder)
1960 (Jean Simmons in Elmer Gantry/Shirley Jones in Elmer Gantry, and in fact Lancaster just might be my win for that year over Perkins though I'll need to re-watch both)

As for Jon Polito, Robert, he's definitely not my favorite of the supporting cast, but I do quite like him. Marcia Gay Harden is actually my favorite of the whole cast, followed by Byrne, then Finney, then Polito. I completely agree that Turturro leaves much to be desired. I'm a massive fan of the movie overall (my #2 of the year).

Robert MacFarlane said...

Yeah, I love the film as well and the rest of the cast. It's also my #2 that year.

Louis: Lastly, your thoughts on the latest episode of Game Of Thrones.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

Pesci and Stern - 3.5(My favorite supporting performance in the film belongs to someone else who I think will be quite confusing in the overall, but just wait for that. Pesci and Stern are enjoyable together putting a lot of energy into their shtick which works for the most. I particularly enjoy Pesci seeming almost pained by his inability to swear in the scenes of suffering)

Goodman - 4(It's been a long while since I've watched the film, which I liked back then anyways. Goodman though I recall being a hilarious late act addition and was just a hoot in every one of his scenes)

Bates - 3(I don't think it is wholly his fault since Claudius really does lose a lot in the shortened version. Nevertheless I found him much like his 48 counterpart to not make much of an impact as villain. He's decent enough, particularly the confessional scene, but not great)

Holm - 3.5(I suppose I should make less excuses for Bates because Holm also has to deal with the smaller part and really does well in it. Holm brings a lot of life to the role creating his version very specifically as a schemer who is trying very hard to figure out what exactly the Prince is up to)

Hurt - 3.5(A nice bit of grotesque work from Hurt. His part is underwritten, which is the case for everyone that's not Richard Harris in the film, but Hurt still does well in infusing some depth into the village idiot type of character)

Bean - 3(He really needed more material as the son is made out to be more important than he's frankly allowed to be by the writing. He just kinda does things as written leaving Bean to try to catch up. I like what Bean did with what he had, but he can't overcome just how thin his part is)

Farnsworth - 4.5(This is a brilliant supporting performance that was essential for the film since his scenes very well could have just been a waste of time, but there's some of the best moments thanks to Farnsworth. He gives such a charming performance as usual and brings so much unassuming humor into his character's investigation of the disappearance. Also every bit of interaction between the sheriff and his wife is pure gold thanks to Farnsworth)

Julia - 4(Well there's not enough of him but isn't that always the case with Julia? Anyways Julia a consummate scene stealer with his perfectly assured portrayal of an ace lawyer. I only wanted more of him as Julia quietly commands such a presence and nails every juicy line he is given. His final exchange with Ford is just dynamite)

Foster - 3.5(She's good but I've always felt her performance is somewhat disjointed. She brings that beaten down by the life appearance in most of her scenes as though she's been thoroughly aged by her experience. Then in her diner scene with De Niro, who by the way still quite like in thee film, she brings a more broken kid approach to the character. She actually does both sides well but I don't think she mends them)

Shepherd - 2.5(She purposefully thin here as character as just a dreamy object of affection for De Niro. I don't dislike her performance but I don't feel she really adds anything special to the role)

Saw Avengers 2. I rather liked it, consistently entertaining throughout.

Downey Jr. - 3.5 (pretty standard Tony Stark schtick which is good, as always)
Evans - 3.5 (doesn't have much of an arc this time round but is strong as always. It's a step down from Winter Soldier but by no fault of his own. As always though he is probably the most convincing action hero out of them all, besides maybe...)
Hemsworth - 3.5 (also does not have much in the way of a character arc, but he's charming enough and like Evans does well in terms of chemistry with the reet of the cast, and has some cracking action scenes)
Ruffalo - 4 (he was pretty fantastic in setting up that low-key chemistry with Johanssan. The pain and grief of the Banner half was very well done, and the mocap work as Hulk was great as always.)
Johansson - 3.5 (I've gotten over the lack of an accent, and past some odd line readings here and there I thought she was actually quite superb in setting up the emotional beats of her relationship with Ruffalo)
Renner - 4 (Whedon's a brilliant writer who most importantly learns from his mistakes. Here he rectifies the flaws of the first film by giving the most talented actor, hands down, in the cast time to shine. Renner does his part by layering his badass archer with a rather winning sense of snark and humour, while also having an undercurrent of constant conviction that really brings out the meaning of the Avengers)
Johnson - 3 (his accent was a bit wonky, but I thought he was energetic and endearing enough, and I actually prefer him to Peters who has slightly fallen out of favour with me on re-watch of Days of Future Past)
Olsen - 3 (wonky accent too, but I actually found her properly terrifying in her first few scenes and easy to sympathise with when the film wanted me to)
Spader - 3.5 (terrific voicework but I feel some of the scattershot writing lets him down just a bit. I'm not sure if they entirely milked the concept of having James Spader as a giant motherfucking robot but he was an effective enough villain, no Loki though)
Bettany - 4 (Probably the MVP of the cast for me, he is sich a memorable presence, with that otherworldliness merged with a sorta omniscient understanding of the world and to cap it off, he's just very endearing)
Serkis - 3 (entertaining cameo. I'm looking forward to Black Panther)
