Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2014: Results

5. Toby Kebbell in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes - Kebbell gives an effective portrayal of the mad villainous ape.

Best Scene: Koba returns to the gun touting fools.
4. Michael Fassbender in Frank - Fassbender gives a funny and moving performance almost entirely without the use of his face.

Best Scene: Frank starts stating his facial expressions.
3. Richard Armitage in The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - Armitage overcomes most of the weaknesses of his film giving a rousing and passionate portrayal of Thorin Oakenshield's final act.

Best Scene: Thorin makes peace with Bilbo.
2. Josh Brolin in Inherent Vice - Josh Brolin gives an incredibly entertaining performance as a excessively straight laced cop that plays particularly well with Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of a hippie P.I.

Best Scene: "Moto Panacaku"
1. Gary Poulter in Joe -  Good Prediction moviefilm. I'll have to admit I'm rather unsure of my overall winner, as I love the top three about equally. Right now my win goes to Gary Poulter's only cinematic performance. Poulter is heartbreaking yet freighting, tragic yet pathetic in his portrayal of the extremes of a broken man which always feel absolutely natural despite the randomness of the man.

Best Scene: "Are You My Friend?"

What about Corden? Are you having trouble deciding between lead and supporting? I didn't think you'd be saving him for bonus reviews because you'd already given ratings and extensive thoughts on both of them.

I saw you put Gandolfini in lead, though.

Louis Morgan said...

No I'd say I accidentally forgot Into The Woods while making the list.

Great work! But... Nat Wolff's embarassing performance in TFIOS and Danny Huston's awfully bland performance in Big Eyes above Neil Patrick Harris's and Alec Baldwin's at least fine works in Gone Girl and Still Alice? Anyway, really great job!

Anonymous said...

Anyway, what are your ratings and thoughts on Dafoe, Trammell and Wolff in TFIOS and Adam Levine in Begin Again?

Louis Morgan said...

I really did not care for Baldwin or Harris in their respective films, but I will admit in a list like this I'll make mistakes. In Wolff's case I listed him relatively early on in the list making and forgot about his placement by time I was finished.

Louis, what are your plans after alternative leading and supporting actors?

Psifonian said...

Poulter reigns supreme. I am pleased.

For 1982, I'd like to see Kurt Russell in "The Thing."

Michael Patison said...

For 1982 Lead:
Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy (I think somebody requested it, but besides that it received a 1982 Icelandic release)
Albert Finney in Shoot the Moon
Harrison Ford in Blade Runner

Other than that I really have no idea, so here are tons of others that received some kind of recognition elsewhere:
Ray Barrett in Goodbye Paradise
Alan Bates in The Return of the Soldier
Michael Caine and Christopher Reeve in Deathtrap
Norman Kaye in Lonely Hearts
Philippe Léotard in La Balance
Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte in 48 Hrs.
Francesco Nuti in The Pool Hustlers
Stellan Skarsgård in The Simple-Minded Murderer
Alberto Sordi in Il Marchese del Grillo
Donald Sutherland in Threshold
Henry Winkler in Night Shift
cast member of That Championship Season (Bruce Dern won the Silver Bear)

I'm sure having that many doesn't help but whatever

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

Oh Shia improved a fair bit! Any particular reason why.

Also thoughts and ratings on Michael Parks in Tusk, did you like Del Toro and Short a lot more upon re - watch and thoughts and ratings for Eric Roberts in Inherent Vice, Almaric and Wilkinson for Grand Budapest

Alan Bates in The Return of the Soldier is a brilliant performance. You should also consider Sutherland's sterling work in Threshold.

Also Finney in Shoot the Moon

Wow, you really loved LaBeouf. I must say, why he certainly was the best of the cast (wasn't really hard given the quality of the other performances), I wasn't that impressed by him either.

James McAvoy would be a 3 for The Disappearence of Eleanor Rigby right?

Louis Morgan said...

I apologize for the incomplete nature of the list as I'll admit I somewhat rushed the making of it.

Anonymous:

Dafoe - 2.5(I thought he went a bit too far in his first scene in doing his whole semi Michael Douglas in Wonder Boys, but I did feel he made up for it in his fairly effective second scene though)

Trammell - 2(Not actively terrible or anything but his inadequate performance that feels a bit forced actually does a good job of showing what's remarkable about Dern's performance)

Wolff - 1.5(A great double act with Elgort as they both are obnoxious in their eccentricities, and than hard to believe in their emotional breakdowns)

Levine - 2(Found him pretty forgettable in his scenes as being the low key guy then I thought he was pretty bad when he was doing the self-indulgent Artists routine)

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

I already like LaBeouf in Fury to begin with, but re-watching the film I was surprised just how much his work resonated with me, which is saying something since I have not really liked a performance by LaBeouf before this one.

Parks - 4.5(Although I did not care the for film Parks offers a nice bit of demented brilliance with his performance. In the first half he is appropriately creepy and actually very frightening, particularly when he reveals his legs work just fine. Once the Walrus appears the film goes purposefully as absurd as possible, but Parks manages to still be consistently entertaining and oddly convincing in portraying one strange form of madness)

On re-watch, since I loved the film all the more, I really appreciated almost every supporting performance a little more especially Short's and Del Toro's, I mean how can you not appreciate him singing the Gilligan's Island theme for a moment.

Eric Roberts - 3.5(The best I've seen from him. He's actually rather quite haunting in his single scene, where he's more than a photograph, by creating the odd frame of mind his character is in)

Almaric and Wilkinson - 3(Both give enough life to their brief appearances, and like most of the cast just add a little something extra to the film with their presence)

JamDenTel: Probably.

Luke:

Re-watch of Guardians upped Bautista's score mainly because in addition to being funny, he really is quite moving in the scene where he explains his anger.

Last 4: Spader

Last 3.5: Bodnia

Top Ten:

1. Joaquin Phoenix in The Master
2. Jake Gyllenhaal in Nightcrawler
3. James McAvoy in Filth
4. Marion Cotillard in The Immigrant
5. Mark Strong in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
6. Daniel Day-Lewis in Lincoln
7. Matthew McConaughey in Dallas Buyers Club
8. Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
9. Choi Min-sik in I Saw the Devil
10. Michael Keaton in Birdman

Yes.

Michael McCarthy said...

Poulter makes a fine win, though I kind of hope you switch to Simmons at some point.

Robert De Niro in The King of Comedy

There are other performances from that year I like, but none I feel nearly as strongly about. It's remarkably unnerving work that I honestly consider his best. As much as I love Paul Newman, De Niro easliy wins the year for me.

Anonymous said...

I remember that last year when you did your Top 5 for the performances of the decade you put Jennifer Lawrence in Winter's Bone and Jacki Weaver in Animal Kingdom. You just forgot to put them in the new list or your appreciation cooled down?

Robert MacFarlane said...

I actually agree on Levine, and I love that movie. Though I will say his singing was better than it usually is. Maybe he should ditch Maroon 5.

5 - Inherent Vice
4 - The Grand Budapest Hotel

Also, I'm not saying Adam Levine's performance in Begin Again was anything special, but am I the only one who thinks he did very well in his last scene?

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

@Michael: I'm afraid not for me at least, sorry Michael. And I loved the film, I assure you. Not sure if I mentioned it before but Keira's a strong 5 for me in it, Ruffalo was charming enough. I basically opted to despise Levine's character throughout which worked well enough for me.

I really enjoyed Cee Lo Green as well. Words said that shall never be said again.

Also, for my 10-5 ranked films

10. The Imitation Game
9. The Babadook
8. Boyhood
7. The Grand Budapest Hotel
6. Locke
5. Inherent Vice

#5: Inherent Vice

#4: The Grand Budapest Hotel

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

You can find my thoughts on Norris and Wilson already.

Bodnia - 3.5(Solid work in portraying a torturer who is just doing the job even more so than usual. Bodnia effectively handles the little humanizing moments, while still showing enough brutality in his interrogation method. As these sort of performances go there are more memorable ones, but this certainly is a decent job)

Wilson - 3.5(She does a great job of going from just standard casual conversation with Locke to absolute distress when hearing about Locke's infidelity. She's particularly good in the scenes later where's she's throwing her anger at Locke as Wilson suggests just in the nature of her voice that this hate seems to be about more than simply Locke's initial revelation)

Colman - 3.5(She's also really quite good in portraying just the constantly distressed nature of her character, and in her voice you can see the person Locke describes her as. In addition she handles the physical distress and changes, from the treatment, rather well from call to call)

Scott - 3.5(I actually preferred his vocal work here to his live action performance in Pride. Scott nicely expresses the phases of his character as he goes from scared employee, to a guy shoving his pent up rage towards his former boss, as well as a truly excited guy to see that things are going to work out int he end. He does well as his voice tells us basically the progress of preparation for the building throughout the night)
