I'm not rooting for him, I'm just going by the hyperbolic praise Psifonian had for him. I haven't even seen Joe yet.

Louis: Is there any chance you'll see Pompeii, during the reviews, since I really, would like to know your thoughts on Kiefer Sutherland.

Predictions:
1. Poulter
2. Brolin
3. Fassbender
4. Armitage
5. Kebbel
Honestly I didn't like Kebbel at all, while I though Fassbender was great. Also Louis, I'm sorry because I don't want to get repetitive, but I'd like to ask you what do you think of The Fault in Our Stars as a whole and of Woodley in the eulogy scene? Also, I won the predictions for Alternate Best Actor 2014, but I don't know if I can request someone since I am anonymous, can I?

@kook160: ahahahahahha well actually I enjoyed the movie and thought Serkis was very good, but I found Kebbell to be nothing impressive in the slighest.
@Louis: I'm sad Emma Stone isn't in your top 5, but I'm still glad you gave her a 4.5. Do you like her in general and what do you think of her in The Help?

@Jackiboyz: God bless you, I love that film, Cobb is great. I was thinking of changing my sole win from Depp in Scissorhands over to Holden in Golden Boy but no worry, Louis will see him anyway now.

Pretty great set, though I'm honestly surprised you aren't covering Riz Ahmed in Nightcrawler.

Guessing:
1) Poulter
2) Brolin
3) Kebbell
4) Fassbender
5) Armitrage

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm probably the only person here that couldn't get into Ahmed in Nightcrawler. I think I gave him a 3.5 originally, but the more I think about it, the more his character sort of bothers me.

Michael Patison said...

Louis: Thoughts and ratings on every male supporting performance you'd give at least a 4.5 to that you're not reviewing. Thanks!

Louis Morgan said...

Robert: I may review Gandolfini anyways.

Corden - 4.5(Easily the best part of the film for me. Corden is great because he manages the tone better than any other performer in the film. He brings a real sense of fun in the whole fetch quest, and is quite funny in portraying the baker's exasperated reactions to the various setbacks involved. He handles all of his songs well as well whether its bringing the needed heart or energy while singing them. The final revelations involved the Baker's wife, and father are ridiculously rushed, but Corden somehow does not falter. He actually manages to be quite moving in portraying the heartbreak his character suffers but as well delivery the final bit of hope in an earnest fashion. Corden, along with Blunt, manages to actually properly connect the lighter and darker tones of the story. )

Luke:

Not yet. I may watch Pompeii, I mean I do like Jon Snow more than many seem to.

Anonymous:

You can still request someone.

I really did not care for A Fault in Our Stars as a whole. I felt its attempts at humor never quite worked, and some of its more dramatic moments bit cringe worthy mainly the Anne Frank house scene, which someone should have put a stop to. I didn't hate it that much, but I certainly was not pulled into in anyway. I thought eulogy scene was well performed by Woodley, even though I had kinda checked out of the movie by then.

RatedRStar:

#10: Same as yours.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Oh GOD that fucking Anne Frank scene. I was livid after watching that.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Also, I'm glad you enjoyed Corden as much as I did.

Matt Mustin said...

Louis, what's your rating and thoughts on Keanu Reeves in John Wick as well as your thoughts on the film as a whole?

Michael McCarthy said...

I just saw A Most Violent Year and I gotta say, even though he was a 5 from Louis I'm surprised at how low he was on the list.

Michael McCarthy said...

Isaac I mean.

Anonymous said...

Thanks for allowing me to request someone, my request then would be Herbert Marshall in The Little Foxes (Best Supporting Actor 1941).

GM said...

Good request, Anonymous!

Anonymous said...

@GM: thanks a lot :) I really liked the movie and I thought Marshall was great, and I also loved Bette Davis, Teresa Wright and Patricia Collinge in the movie. I'm glad you picked Davis for Best Actress 1941 (your blog is great by the way).

What are your thoughts/rating on Celia Johnson in Brief Encounter and The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Anonymous said...

@GDSAO: He would give her a 5 for Brief Encounter, don't know about Jean Brodie though.
@Louis: Also, thoughts/rating on Pamela Franklin in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie.

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

@Anonymous: What are your thoughts/ratings for the cast of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

ALso have just seen Jupiter Ascending. It was pretty awful. Most scenes come across as awfully dour, the action scenes are very stock, visual effects are nice but hey look at that budget, it's a big step down from Cloud Atlas (they didn't even make use of James D'arcy or Doona Bae well, do they not understand what made that film work was the acting?). Some scenes involving a certain Oscar-nominated somebody are VERY entertaining, though--but not necessarily in a good way.

Tatum-2 (really not as bad as I'd expected)
Kunis-1
Bean-3
Redmayne-3 Wiseaus (he was horrible but rather entertainingly so, think Billy Zane in space operatic mode, Redmayne seems like a nice chap and can be a very good actor but he needs to stay away from these sort of roles/films. On a separate note, the character was not without potential, someone like Ben Whishaw could've potentially turned it the equivalent of Peter Ustinov in Quo Vadis)
Booth-1
Middleton-1.5

Luke Higham said...

I wonder what I should see next Tuesday. (£3 for tickets by the way).
Jupiter Ascending or Shaun The Sheep, honestly, I have to go with the latter.

Anonymous said...

@Anonymous: I haven't seen it in quite a while and I probably should rewatch it to really define my thoughts, anyway Smith would be a 5 for me as she was simply brilliant (my pick for the year might be Fonda, though) and I'd give a 4 to both Pamela Franklin and Celia Johnson, although their ratings could possibly go up on a rewatch. Thanks for asking anyway :)

I think Poulter will win, but there is a very slight chance of an upset.

I still think Simmons will take the overall.

Matt:

Reeves - 4(Again I can joke about him being a great choice for an unemotional killer, and in being the precise killer Reeves is cooler than he's ever been and makes John Wick quite the memorable bad ass. To be fair though Wick is not unemotional and in the scenes where Reeves expresses the grief that compels Wick he does deliver and is actually quite moving)

John Wick - (It's fair to say that I loved John Wick as it was the film The Equalizer and Three Days to Kill wanted to be. It has a nice light sense of humor in creating its slightly off beat world without getting too self-absorbed with it. It does a particularly good job of getting to the fundamentals of an action movie and does a great job of establishing the reason to care about Wick and the reason to hate the villains. Then there are the actions scenes which are just beautiful and every single one is a joy to watch especially the nightclub shootout)

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

Johnson - 4.5(Technically her role could have been one note nothing to be defeated by the strong willed Miss Jean as played by Smith. Johnson though is a worthy foe though actually and matches Smith's intensity with her own in the scenes where they square off. I particularly love her reaction of satisfaction when she knows she finally has something that will get the best of Miss Brodie)

Anonymous:

Franklin - 5(She's fantastic in the role as she portrays the subtle maturation of her character, which could have faltered considering she does not actually age. Franklin though effectively conveys the way Sandy comes into her own in her time with Jean. Franklin is great because she shows that it Jean's tutelage is what allows her to be the only one who will also stand up to some of Jean's questionable lessons. Like Johnson she also stands toe to toe with Brodie and their final confrontation is outstanding on both ends)
