I've heard Harvey Weinstein has started a last-minute campaign to get Cotillard nominated for "The Immigrant". I think this could kill her chances to be nominated.

Also, fuck yeah about Gyllenhaal's nomination, he deserves to win the Oscar in my opinion

Anonymous said...

I'm so happy about Gyllenhaal, he was amazing! But... Really, Naomi Watts in St. Vincent? Over Chastain, Dern and Russo? And Jennifer Aniston over Marion Cotillard and Shailene Woodley? I mean, I'm not too pissed about their nominations but I really think they could have nominated somebody else..

Robert MacFarlane said...

Dude, no one's even seen Cake yet. Don't complain about her nomination until you see it.

Michael McCarthy said...

Thrilled about Gyllenhaal's nomination, as well as Grand Budapest Hotel's nomination for best cast. Although I do think it's odd that the latter got that nomination even though none of it's individual performances did.

Anonymous said...

@kook160: I'm sorry, you're right about Aniston, we'll see when her movie comes out. Anyway, what do you think about Watts' nomination (if you've seen St. Vincent)?

Robert MacFarlane said...

Didn't see St. Vincent.

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar said...

I've just seen The Judge and I would not mind Duvall being nominated, at all. Bad film but a very, very good performance from one of my favourite actors.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: McAvoy - 4(He technically has quite the challenge in that he has to make his character interesting, who's not really all that complicated especially when compared to Amin, while not being wholly overshadowed by Whitaker's flamboyant performance. McAvoy does a fine job of carrying the scenes away from Whitaker, although he certainly does not steal any scenes from him I do feel he is able stand his ground with Whitaker, particularly in their final showdown)

Anonymous: Not really unfortunately.

Robert:

Owen - 2(This version is pretty weak anyways since it takes a far too lighthearted approach for the material. It is even more obnoxious to know that Lionel Barrymore was going to play the part, but had to back out due to his legs. Owen is no replacement. His Scrooge has no menace as he just seems like a guy who needs to relax more than anything else. Past that though he's just rather bland and there's not much to be gotten from his transformation)

Hicks - 2.5(This version and Hicks's performance are a tad on the boring side. Hicks version basically goes from a grumpy old man to a happy old man. He's not terrible at either of these sides, but there's not much in terms of the transformation due to the uninteresting way the ghosts are presented. I do feel he's better than Owen, but not by much)

Anonymous: In regards to Watts I guess Sag voters just love the Australian ladies doing a funny accent. I'm surprised they did not double dip on Birdman's supporting actress instead, perhaps that contributed to it? For left field I would have preferred Rene Russo. I actually do prefer Watts over presumed winner Arquette, but that's just me.

Michael: I have a feeling that Fiennes was probably six, since Selma apparently did not get its screeners out in time. Although if he got in it may have been at the expense of Gyllenhaal.

In regards to the nominations I have to say I hope Nick Krause is listed properly as one of the names in ensemble for Boyhood, since no one should not deny a great performance like that.

Also I'm very much looking forward to see who the Globes nominate for Supporting Actor to see who the sixth contender may be.

Anonymous said...

I did like Patricia Arquette but I hardly loved her performance. Not amazing by any means, but I'd be fine with an eventual win from her.

John Smith said...

I just saw The Bridge On Rivber Kwai. Amazing performances, the best by Guinnes.

RatedRStar said...

I like the nominations except one, Watts but I am confident she will not get oscar nominated or globe nominated, I thought she was terrible and made parts of St Vincent completely inappropriate, I thought her accent was just way, way off, maybe she should have watched Viggo Mortensen in how to handle russian accents.

@Luke: I am sorry I couldnt possibly guess what Louis will give cause if I get it completely wrong I will feel quite embarrassed lol.

Section 1
1) DiCaprio
2) Watanabe
3) Jackman
4) Owen
5) Dujardin

Section 2
1)Bale
2)Murphy
3)Mühe
4)Reeves
5)Damon (I thought he was poor and completed overshadowed by Andy Lau in the same role)

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I personally believe that Muhe will get a 5 and the overall, I think Bale, Dicaprio, Murphy and Watanabe will get 5s as well, 4.5s for Owen, Jackman & Dujardin, a 4 for Reeves and a 3.5 for Damon. (cough, Filler Review cough).

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Damon was sort of requested.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I know, but still, it's a bit like the Maguire situation, only Damon's more tolerable than that piece of trash.

I'm not disagreeing with you Louis, since it's great to see a double line-up for once, which I'm pretty sure, at this moment, will be repeated for '14 Lead.

I'll never trash on you Louis, since your far and away the best/trustworthy film critic on the internet, even more so than James Berardinelli or Nostalgia Critic, who I tend to read/watch their reviews on a consistent basis.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I mean, I don't really object to Damon getting a review. He was fine. He was just overshadowed by DiCaprio.

Anonymous said...

I thought Damon was pretty good in the role, easily his best to me.

Luke Higham said...

I'm not really objecting him either, heck I'm predicting a pretty decent score for him.

Am I really the only one who found the Stone-Norton subplot in Birdman the weak link of the movie? Because quite frankly I found it distracting.

@Robert: No you are not it is the weakest part of the film, which probably stops Stone and Norton from getting any more than 4 overall.
