Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2004: Results

5.  Alex Fong in One Nite in Mongkok- Fong's performance is forced to be very much to the point but he manages to create his character along way quite effectively.

Best Scene: Milo covers up the shooting.
4. David Carradine in Kill Bill Vol. 2- I know I may suffer the same fate as Bill for this, but I have to admit that I don't love this performance. I just like it quite a bit.

Best Scene: The end of Bill and The Bride's duel.
3. Michael Madsen in Kill Bill Vol. 2 - My favorite of the assassins actually as Madsen brings so much heart to his performance.

Best Scene: Budd "wins"
2. Willem Dafoe in the Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou- Dafoe is absolutely endearing and incredibly funny as the Steve Zissou's most loyal man.

Best Scene: "Thanks for not picking me"
1. Philip Seymour Hoffman in Along Came Polly - Well this might come as a surprise to all. Hoffman does not have the great directors behind him that Dafoe, Madsen, and Carradine do. He just has himself, and I loved him the most.

Best Scene: Proxy Insurance speech.

My request for Ken Ogata in The Ballad of Narayama still stands.

James Woods in Videodrome
Christopher Walken in The Dead Zone

Also I'm not sure which of the male cast you put in lead and which you put in supporting (I put them all in supporting) but they all deserve a watch.

And De Niro was one of my winning requests, but he is indeed 1982 by these rules.

What are your ratings and thoughts on Laura Linney in Kinsey and Sophie Okonedo in Hotel Rwanda?

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Can I have your Rating & Thoughts on Uma Thurman in Kill Bill Vol 2, An Updated list of 5 Star Female Performances from 2000 onwards and your top 5 Lead & Supporting Actress picks for 2004.

Louis Morgan said...

Michael Patison: All are a four.

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

Colm Meaney - 4(Layer Cake has a pretty good ensemble on a whole anyway, even Tom Hardy is in it although the film fails to realize that it's Tom Hardy. Meaney was easily my favorite of the supporting though. On one hand he brings the right hard edge to be the brutal gangster he technically is, but carries with this casual sorta warmth fitting for his position as a mentor of sorts. I love the scene where he shows Craig the guns)

Thewlis - 3.5(Thewlis kinda covers for Gambon in this one, as Gambon does not seem completely comfortable in his role yet, as the kindly mentor. He does a good job of being the comforting factor for most of the film while subtly alluding to the darkness beneath the surface)

Frost - 3.5(He and Pegg are always great together, well except for Paul, and I thoroughly enjoy Frost here who manages to be endearing while never holding back for a moment in portraying he character's uncouthness)

Nighy - 3.5(Nighy's pretty much always good and is quite enjoyable in doing his proper British man routine here. I particularly like his delivery of having put the zombie bite under a cold tap. He also though manages to surprisingly moving in his final scene with Pegg without it feeling out of context with the rest of the film)

Tudyk - 3.5(It's certainly a funny film when he's only the fifth funniest performer in it. Loved his Steve the Pirate. It's a one note sorta performance, except his last scene, but Tudyk does the pirate accent proud)

Dafoe - 3.5(Well it needs to be said that J.K. Simmons is the MVP of every Spider-Man film so much so that they won't even re-cast the part in the Amazing films apparently being well aware that no one could be better as J. Jonah Jameson. Anyway Dafoe single scene is actually my favorite moment in the film as Dafoe gives a better performance than he did the film. Only the best parts of the menacing side of his character are apparent, and gives a memorable single scene)

Gorman - 3(Actually I'm kinda growing a fondness for the fookin' legend of Gin Alley. He's definitely over the top as he always is but that works well for his character who is suppose to be trying so hard to be a gangsta)

Bean - 3(Rather odd casting with Bean playing one of the only guys who does not die for once. Odysseus very bizarrely a non-entity in the story but Bean brings a needed conviction to every scene he is in. He does not get a lot to do but he does it well)

Whishaw - 3(Rather short performance to be sure, but Whishaw does a very solid job of portraying his overly emotional fool in an honest fashion without falling into histrionics)

Robert: Was there really any other choice? Although Roxburg certainly made a play for it as the least intimidating Dracula I've ever seen, yes Leslie Nielsen included.

Anonymous:

Linney - 3(I don't think she's bad, but the problems I have with her character are the same I have with the film. The film never wants to make a statement about Kinsey really, it kinda tries but fails miserably to decide whether it likes him, whether he went too far, or whatever. This unfortunately hurts the performances. Kinsey's wife is treated randomly from first being the just as smart student, to the caring wife, then the sexually indulgent deviant than randomly back to a very standard supportive wife. Linney is never terrible, but is unable to get over the film's inability to really bother to create a through line for her character. On a side note Dylan Baker really should have been Kinsey as he just looks the part)

Okonedo - 4(A pretty powerful performance in the emotional intensity she brings that is needed to rightfully match the intensity of the situation. I do feel though that she makes a few missteps with her performance as there are scenes where there like a venom she brings that is focused towards Cheadle's character that doesn't really make sense)

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Thurman - (She's great in building upon her performance from the first one. She brings that intensity of the revenge again but effectively explores the other side of her character. She does a particularly excellent job of showing the growing of the Bride throughout the flashbacks, and she strikes up some brilliantly complex chemistry with Carradine)

Actress:

1. Uma Thurman - Kill Bill Vol. 2
2. Kate Winslet - Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3. Alexandra Maria Lara - Downfall
4. Holly Hunter - The Incedibles
5. Cecilia Cheung - One Nite in Mongkok (I guess)

(I need to watch a great deal of the supposed best actresses from 2004)

Supporting Actress:

1. Cate Blanchett - The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
2. Hannah Pilkes - The Woodsman
3. Virginia Madsen - Sideways
4. Naomi Watts - I Heart Huckabees
5. Daryl Hannah - Kill Bill Vol. 2

What made you upload Paltrow and Bullock to a five?

Louis Morgan said...

I re-watch Bullock which cemented the score. When I had given my thoughts about Paltrow in an earlier post it made me think of just how much I liked her performance.
