Hoffman? Look, I know he's the best thing about that movie, but you should have reviewed Wahlberg. He's much funnier. my predictions:

1. Carradine
2. Dafoe
3. Fong
4. Madsen
5. Hoffman

I gotta believe in Carradine. I just gotta.

I am hoping Alex Fong can continue the proud Daniel Thornton tradition of underrated Hong Kong actors getting their due. Alex Fong is criminally underated, 4 nominations and zero wins, if you see his wiki page all he has is a picture and the films he was in, thats it lol.

Philip Seymour Hoffman just didn't give bad performances...having said that, this seems like a waste of a review.

1. Dafoe
2. Hoffman
3. Carradine (I guess)
4. Fong
5. Madsen (who I personally liked more than Carradine)

When was the last time you saw Vol. 2, Psifonian?

Psifonian: Are you Drunk, If you want to win this prediction, then for all that's holy, please, go with your mind & not your heart. To say that Louis will pick Hoffman over Carradine & Madsen is complete & utter Blasphemy.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Not blasphemy, bold. Really, really bold. But seriously, I can't even fathom not finding Carradine anything other than perfect. I'd go as far to say he's the best Tarantino performance I've ever seen, Waltz included.

I think this will be another year where there are no supporting actor performances that get a 5. With the exception of 2002, the first half of the 2000s were not very good years for supporting actor performances.

Psifonian said...

I actually watched Vol. 2 (and all of Tarantino's films) last month. Carradine's fine but holy crap is he overpraised. Meanwhile, I loved Madsen's stretch the most out of any sequence in the film.

Hoffman, meanwhile, is at his comedic peak and brings such life and verve into a film that is pretty much "Silver Linings Playbook" without Weinstein pushing it. Seriously. It's the same damn movie, only one has the common decency to have PSH in it.

Psifonian said...

Also, real talk, the "proxy insurance pitch" at the end of "Along Came Polly" is one of the funniest scenes of the 2000s.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'd actually say Carradine doesn't get nearly enough praise. I've seen his performance dismissed more often than praised. Just like you're doing. Also, Along Came Polly makes Silver Linings look like Gone with the Wind.

Psifonian said...

Funny; I see him praised more than not. But I guess we're coming from different worlds here.

I guess we'll see where Louis falls.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Hoffman is very funny, yes, but Rip Torn and Mark Wahlberg were much funnier that year.

Louis what would be your ratings and thoughts on Linda Blair in The Exorcist? I think she's so damn hard to rate... She's definitely effective but I don't know if the merit goes to her or to the make-up, the special effects and Mercedes McCambridge's voice.

Robert MacFarlane said...

This will be forever known as the great Carradine-Hoffman war of '14.

Robert MacFarlane said...

After thinking about it more, I'm totally okay with Hoffman getting a review. I'm letting my dislike of the movie cloud my vision. He was really, really funny.

Rip Torn - 4(Going a bit of absurd but loving every minute of it, and well I love every minute of it too. Torn's consistently funny in bringing such enthusiasm in his consistently sleazy yet with the right Burgess Meredith type passion to play the part of the has been dodge ball player)

Stiller - 4(Technically a reprise of his performance in Heavyweights, but so what it works here. Stiller does the over the top fitness nut as an over the top villain quite hilariously and has the right type of fun with his performance because you have it right along with him)

O' Toole - 4(A re-watch could propel him higher. O'Toole really was on a whole different level and perhaps he remembered what made the old swords and sandals films work. O'Toole brings genuine emotions to the part and manages to be quite heartbreaking in his pivotal scene where he asks for his sons body)

Brian Cox - 3.5(Cox on the other hand goes for a more obvious diabolical villain. I don't care though because he's Brian Cox, and he's still quite entertaining doing his best to make up for Pitt's blandness)

Gleeson - 2.5(Eh I hate a misused Brendan Gleeson which is too often the case when he's in a mainstream film. I recall Gleeson still being completely solid, but that his role was brief and thankless.)

Sarsgaard - 3(I recall him being fine in that I believed him the role, but I thought there was a bit of a disconnection between the man everyone wants to the man who thinks Kinsey is going too far)

Kebbell - 4(Kebbell handles the mannerisms never seeming false or actory. He makes his character honestly mentally handicapped and his unassuming work plays off especially well off of Considine's extremely intense performance)

Lee - 3(Pretty much my thoughts on Nelson)

Anonymous:

Linda Blair is a tricky one to be even discuss since there is the use of a dummy, Dick Smith's great makeup, and of course Mercedes McCambridge's voice. I mean here little girl scenes are completely fine, and I suppose her grimaces are good enough. I wouldn't have nominated her but technically speaking her performance is one of the facets of the incredible creation of Regan.

Patison:

Bird - 3(A rather enjoyable vocal performance to be sure. I don't know if I love it as much as some but I certainly liked his performance)

Anonymous:

To be perfectly honest since I have not seen the film since I watched it in theaters I just don't remember her performance all that well.
