I would have thought that Louis will still rank the cast, in fact, I might as well ask him, wise old monk known as Louis, what are your thoughts and ratings on the cast of The Big Chill.

Also, Louis you picked the perfect picture for Mickey Rourke, he looks ultra cool and gothic lol =D.

1) McGavin
2) Harris
3) Ameche
4) Rourke
5) Lancaster

Tilly: 4.5
Williams: 5 (my supporting win)

I should also add that this is my choice for Best Picture.

Predictions:
1. McGavin
2. Harris
3. Rourke
4. Lancaster
5. Ameche
As for The Big Chill, I liked the cast but I'm not as enthusiastic on it as some of you. Kline didn't impress me, Goldblum was fine but not too remarkable, Hurt was quite memorable and Berenger was impressive too. Williams was very good, Tilly was quite good but I don't really remember her, Mary Kay Place was fine but not that special and Glenn Close left me a bit underwhelmed, she was fine but I really wanted more.
My ratings (even if I should rewatch the movie):
Kline - 2.5 or 3
Close - 3
Berenger - 4
Hurt - 4
Williams - 3.5 or 4
Tilly - 3 (should rewatch it as I'm not sure of what make of her)
Mary Kay Place - 2.5 or 3

Oh, and Goldblum would be a 3.5 I guess. Speaking of Meg Tilly, who what do you all think of her performance in Agnes of God? I thought she was brilliant.

Putting Ameche last just because it's a fun performance, but not a terribly substantial one (and he's really part of a double act with Ralph Bellamy).

Robert MacFarlane said...

Except he's the funniest thing about a comedy film and overshadows Bellamy.

Louis Morgan said...

GetDonaldSutherlandAnOscar:

Berenger - 4(Berenger has just enough fun with the character's perpetual self loathing toward his on-screen personality. He also though strikes up some convincing and believable chemistry with Williams that is less present romance rather more of old affections)

Close - 3(The only logic to her Oscar nomination is that she was nominated the previous year therefore was the easiest choice out of the cast. Her performance though never really came to life like much of the rest of the cast for me. She played her big emotional moments technically well, but I did not find them particularly cohesive to a whole)

Goldblum - 4(He does not get many "deep" discussions but rather the fairly shallow statements. Goldblum is quite entertaining in his realization of his character's particular ego and lack of any particular shame)

Hurt - 4.5(Hurt was easily MVP for me as he, I feel, he had the best grasp on the material more than anything. He did a great job of showing really just the lack of understanding his character actually has. Hurt made the happier moments, and the sadder ones seem always naturally transition from one another. What was great with Hurt is when his character lashed out Hurt did it with the needed passion, but he always brought a certain hesitation portraying that his character always had a certain doubt over his own words)

Kline - 3(Kline apparently should never do accents because he never does them particularly well. That is unfortunately the case here as well, but past that I still thought he did a decent job of realizing his place as a straight man of sorts while never being entirely boring)

Place - 3.5(I liked her performance as she had the right certain awkwardness throughout as she always implies her character's particular objective while coming to meet the old gang)

Williams - 3.5(I thought she gave a good performance in that I thought she basically checked all the boxes for her character, but I don't know, she was satisfactory but never more than that)

Tilly - 3.5(Her character was somewhat limited, but I like how she kinda had the lack of pretension in her work that properly separated her performance from everyone else. She did the air head thing pretty well without ever overplaying it, and bringing some honest emotion beneath it)

Galloway - 3(He does not get to do much other than be the dopey husband, but he does it well particularly the scene where he talks about children)

Luke:

Sin City: A Dame to Kill For
The Two Faces of January
The Rover
Life of Crime

Not quite, but it's up there. It's my #3 behind The Proposition (I go by Academy eligibility) and The Departed. Brick and A Scanner Darkly aren't far behind. And yes, Hall got better on re-watches.

Reeves - 5 (Yes, really. Uses his screen persona in the best possible way)
Downey - 3.5 (Overrated.)
Ryder - 4.5
Harrelson - 2.5
Cochrane - 1 (Holy fuck, so much mugging.)

I have seen A Scanner Darkly but its been so long ago that I would need to see it again, I remember it being one of Keanauanuanus better performances.

Robert MacFarlane said...

It's his best, period. It uses all of his usually mundane Reeve-isms and manages to cut a tragic portrait of a man who's his own worst enemy.

@Robert: Why do I get the feeling that if Louis sees the performance, he will not quite have the same energy and optimsm you have for Keanu lol xD.

Robert MacFarlane said...

The twist with his character puts a different spin on how he reacts in certain scenes. Also, I noticed he used a slightly different accent for certain scenes on re-watch. Just a little touch that shoved him into a 5.

Alright I'm back, for the most part, although it still might be a bit before the first review. I like to thank everyone for the kind words and the well wishes.

Kevin: Anyway my thoughts on the films themselves.

Sin City - (The style of the first one actually began to wear thin on me for re-watches so that was not a good thing for starters. The style here is probably more streamlined looking yet more cartoony, and the action here just lacks any punch unlike in the first film. One of the the highlights of the first film was its editing, but here the whole film felt a bit rushed and rather disjointed. I did like parts of Dame to Kill For, and Levitt's story(even though I thought the ending was poorly handled), the Alba's part was atrocious for the most part(Also Marv definitely should have been dead by then). I'll grant it that it was never Spirit bad, but it lacked the spirit of the first one (pun intended, and I don't love the first one))

The Two Faces January - (It looked the look, but it did not quite thrill as it should have. As a whole I thought it was fine, but I was always waiting for it to really becomes something memorable and it never did. Not bad at all, but never close to being great either)

The Rover - (An intriguing film to say the least, although I'm still not sure what to make of it. I like the atmosphere with the off-beat apocalypse it presented. One element of it is extremely strong, but I do feel the plot of the brothers could have been more powerful than it was)

Life of Crime - (This was a bit like the Two Faces of January for me. I liked it well enough throughout but I just kept waiting for a really memorable crime picture to come out. It ends up being a enjoyable enough of one, but once again it never quite sprung to life (pun not intended) as I would have hoped for)

Robert MacFarlane said...

I saw The Drop. It wasn't bad, but the editing was messy as hell. Very good acting though.

Louis Morgan said...

Rourke - (He was at a disadvantage to begin with since Marv's story was definitely finished so he had no character arc to go off of. Past that though I did not think he had quite the same quality. One problem was the film seemed a little too knowledgeable about the popularity of Rourke's performance, and they really used Marv in kind of an annoying way. Plus I do feel Rourke seemed less invested with the character and showboated a little too much this time. He had glimpses of that great performance he gave in the first film, but it just was not the same)

Brolin -(I thought he did a solid enough job of being the hard bitten hero, although I will admit his Clive Owen makeup was so bizarre it almost causes one to want to lower his score. It was not his fault that it made the rest of his performance very hard to take seriously)

Gordon-Levitt - (He had the style down perfectly with his performance. The noir dialogue just flowed from his mouth beautifully. The style seemed dodgy at times, but he made completely work by being so naturally a part of it)

Green -(A viciously sinister work that completely earns the moniker of A Dame to Kill For indeed. She chews the scenery for sure but in the best kind of way. She convinces you of the every manipulation as she has brings such an allure with her performance)

Boothe - (He simply oozes menace with his performance, and like Gordon-Levitt just knows exactly how to sell the material. I'm glad he was in the last act as his commanding portrayal of an unquestioned brutality is the only thing that kept me watching the film at that point)

Lloyd - (He's still got it. Just one scene but Lloyd has some grotesque fun here)

Meloni - (Okay here's the example of going for the style of the film and completely failing with it. He's not singing but he seems almost out of key with how awkward his whole performance is.)

Alba - (Speaking of awkward. Alba's always been a wooden actress and even in her often paper thin roles she seems inadequate. There was not an ounce of believability in her scenes of alcoholism and her attempts at being intense where downright laughable)

The Two Faces of January:

Mortensen - (Mortensen was perhaps too good here as even though he was technically playing the villain I sympathized most with him. The reason being Mortensen made his character most feel like a human being and even when he did terrible things Mortensen portrayed his reactions with such an emotional honesty. Very solid work from a great actor)

Isaac - (Isaac on the other hand doesn't do so well. First of all Isaac kept playing the role like his character was hiding something, but he never really was. He was suppose to be the technical hero, but Isaac for reasons played it oddly smarmy. He had no chemistry with Dunst therefore that whole part of the story fell flat. If it was not for some solid intense moments with Mortensen I would give him a lower score)

The Rover:

Pearce - (A re-watch could give him a five as I was already close to giving him a five. Guy Pearce, I'm sure your not reading this, but never play an obvious villain again you're just not good at it for some reason, please do play complex protagonists though because your one of the best in the business. Anyway Pearce is fantastic here portraying the stoic nature of his character brilliantly. It an amazing dynamic as he had the cold exterior yet Pearce always conveyed such a powerful emotion simmering beneath it that came from his past)

Pattison - 3(Need some time and a re-watch. I thought his performance had a certain effectiveness, even if his accent was a little too much)

Life of Crime:

Hawkes - 4(The best part of the film, and the whole time made me feel sorry knowing what would happen to his character in the sequel. Hawkes though was very good in having a very natural depiction of a confidant but slightly incompetent criminal. His portrayal of Louis's slowly growing conscious was well handled, and he kept me invested in the film even when the film faltered a bit)

Luke Higham said...

Louis: If you do happen to give Pearce a 5 in the near future, can you give him a more in depth review, regardless if it's long or short, like my request for Fassbender in Frank.

Hi Louis, what are your ratings and thoughts on Virginia Cherrill in City Lights and Jean Harlow in Public Enemy? I'm not sure of who's my choice for B.S.Actress 1931 between them

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I see that You moved De Niro down to a 4.5 for Once upon a time in America, can I have your reason why.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous:

I'm in the need of a re-watch of Girl Interrupted.

Ryder - 3(I thought she was fine but mostly kinda bland compared to her co-stars. That is perhaps technically the point, but it is still possible to stand out in such a case)

Jolie - 3.5(She is obviously quite showboating here, and its no surprise that she won an Oscar for it as it kinda screams it. It does work for the part though, I did find her effective)

Murphy - 3.5(I thought she was appropriately moving. A re-watch could easily improve her rating the most)

Cherill - 3.5(Simple work but consistently charming. It's very effortless sort of performance but in the right sort of way)

Harlow - 4(Plays her part with the appropriate sort of gusto and does a particularly good job of staying with Cagney in their scenes together. She's never overshadowed by him and adds very nicely to the film)

Luke:

Examining the performance it never quite had that one moment that often determines a five for me. It's very good work, but I actually think his very best scene belongs to Woods in the end.
