Alternate Best Supporting Actor 2009: Results

5. Christian McKay in Me and Orson Welles - McKay recreates Orson Welles effectively unfortunately the film fails to give him the opportunity to truly delve into the man.

Best Scene: Welles's outburst on stage.
4. Nicholas Tse in Bodyguards and Assassins - A fairly simple and small role, but Tse makes his character very endearing and in turn makes his final scene very moving.

Best Scene: Si tries to slow the assassin down.
3. Michael Fassbender in Fish Tank- Fassbender combines the right amount of sleaze and charm to his character, although this is not his best performance from 2009.

Best Scene: Connor takes advantage of Mia.

2. Peter Capaldi in In The Loop - Capaldi gives a extremely entertaining and properly intense performance as the foul mouthed fixer Malcolm Tucker. Every scene he is in is a treat, and when the film asks a little more of him Capaldi is more than up to the task.

Best Scene: Malcolm's introduction.
1. Jeffrey Dean Morgan in Watchmen- Good Predictions Koook and Kevin. The film adaptation of Watchmen did not get everything right but one thing it did which was genius was casting Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian. The Comedian is a complex character and Morgan does not simplify any aspect of him. He gives a powerful performance that is unflinching in the realization of a brute, but also manages to believably allow the man some charm with a semblance of a soul somewhere in him.

Best Scene: The Watchmen's meeting.

Alright, my official request is Laurence Harvey in The Manchurian Candidate for 1962 Lead.

Louis: Where would you rank Morgan & Haley in your Top Ten Comic Book/Graphic Novel Movie Performances.

RatedRStar said...

Anthony Perkins - Goodbye Again
Clark Gable - The Misfits
Dirk Bogarde - Victim
Toshiro Mifune - Yojimbo
James Cagney - One,Two,Three

Luke Higham said...

Mifune - Yojimbo

That's all I could say

Nicholas Tse =D =D =D.

Matt Mustin said...

Also, ratings and thoughts on Steve Buscemi in The Messenger and Karl Urban in Star Trek?

JackiBoyz said...

@Louis: Which is your favorite performance so far from Game Of Thrones

@RatedRStar: Since you liked Nicholas Tse and thought he was deserving of his win, who would you have chosen as the 2013 Hong Kong Best Supporting Actor and Best Actor

@koook160: What did you make of Angela Lansbury and Frank Sinatra in The Manchurian Candidiate

Michael McCarthy said...

Toshiro Mifune-Yojimbo
Anthony Perkins-Goodbye Again
Sidney Poitier-A Raisin in the Sun
Dirk Bogarde-Victim
Peter Finch-No Love for Johnnie
Clark Gable-The Misfits

Actually haven't seen Goodbye Again, but I'm such a Perkins fan I gotta put it out there.

Oh sweet lord, 1961 is FULL of gems!

Beatty / Splendor in the Grass
Bogarde / Victim
Mastroianni / La Notte
Poitier / A Raisin in the Sun
Salvatori / Rocco and His Brothers

Salvatori gives my favorite male performance of all time, easily!

@JackiBoyz: Lansburry was fucking amazing and Sinatra was alright. The only thing superior about that stupid remake is Washington was better Marco.

Michael McCarthy said...

The Manchurian Candidate is the only film I've seen where I thought Sinatra was decent.

Robert MacFarlane said...

He was good, but overshadowed by Harvey and Lansbury. Washington was the only thing I really liked about the sequel, though I think I may be too dismissive of Schreiber. I'm trying not to compare him to Harvey, but it's difficult not to.

Louis Morgan said...

Spall - 4(He's really good at this type of role where he plays the quiet good man among more emotional sorts. He plays off Sheen well, and adds some honest heart to the film)

Sarsgaard - 3.5(I prefer Fassbender's take on this type character, but Sarsgaard is also pretty good at being charming with an underlying sleaze)

Molina - 3(I thought he was fine for the most part, but I do find there was much more that could have been done with the character than his fairly broad routine)

Schreiber - 3(Again a terrible film but I did enjoy his weird way of being over the top while seeming to underplay the role at the same time)

Bana - 3(Yes he's over the top, but I find that technically is fitting for a Star Trek villain that is suppose to be interacting with the original series)

Lang - 2.5(I suppose he's the best part but that really does not matter)

Oldman - 2.5(The motion capture is such a hindrance in this film as Oldman's face seems so awkwardly planted on all his characters. I really would to like have seen a live action Oldman playing Marley or actually I'd prefer him for Scrooge especially over Carrey, but this film did him no favors in any regard. I really don't want even say more as the whole setup was so poor to begin with)

Firth - 2(Again his face is awkwardly used although not as badly as Oldman's. Even past that I found his Fred just kinda dull where he's the character you should try to make endearing)

Morgan and Haley would be #2 and #3 just behind Ledger.

Matt:

Buscemi - 3.5(A re-watch could move him up a bit actually. Anyway I found his two scenes very moving as he just gave such a natural depiction of grief)

Urban - 3(I always wanted more of him in both films as I thought he did a great job of replicating DeForest Kelly in a comedic way without becoming too absurd)

JackiBoyz: I'd say either Peter Dinklage or Charles Dance.

I'm not too familiar with 1961. The only thing I can think of is Richard Beymer in West Side Story.

Robert MacFarlane said...

For 1961 the only one I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is Keir Dullea in David and Lisa.

Kevin said...

My winning request is Casey Affleck in Gone Baby Gone for 2007 Best Actor

And I made a mistake for my previous request for Ulrich Muhe in The Lives of Others. He should be for 2006, not 2007

Michael McCarthy said...

Richard Beymer??? Please God no. I loooooove West Side Story but that man had zero charisma in a role where that was really all he needed. I honestly hope he finishes last.

Michael Patison said...

Louis, are you caught up with Thrones or not? Dinklage was my MVP for seasons 1 and 2, but his weak storyline and Dance's fantastic performances during 3 made him my easy MVP of the season.

As for 1961:
Peter Finch in No Love for Johnnie
Clark Gable in The Misfits
Toshiro Mifune in Yojimbo
Anthony Perkins in The Trial
Sidney Poitier in A Raisin in the Sun

Some others (I guess?):
Warren Beatty in Splendor in the Grass
Jean-Paul Belmondo in A Woman Is a Woman
Horst Bollmann in The Miracle of Father Malachia
Alec Guinness in A Majority of One
Anthony Quinn in Barabbas
Marcello Mastroianni in La Notte

I'll suggest...

Warren Beatty, Splendor in the Grass (and DEFINITELY Pat Hingle for Supporting)
James Cagney, One, Two, Three
Clark Gable, The Misfits
Toshire Mifune, Yojimbo
Sidney Poitier, A Raisin in the Sun

What a weird year. Good on the surface, kind of weak when you really dig into it.

RatedRStar said...

@JackiBoyz: Tong Dawei in American Dreams In China and Nick Cheung in Unbeatable.

Maciej said...

The only 2 that come to my mind are:

Warren Beatty - Splendor in the Grass
Clark Gable - The Misfits

Also, Max von Sydow gave a really good performance in Through a Glass Darkly, but I'm not sure I'd call him a lead.

Luke Higham said...

This year feels so barren, that I can already predict the winner. I'll be absolutely stunned if Mifune doesn't win.

Louis Morgan said...

Michael: I'm not quite all the way caught up, but I'm getting there.

I'd also suggest Jonah Hill in Cyrus. Hill has a unique acting style of his own, and though both he and Seth Rogen are talented actors, Hill is generally taken more seriously as an actor and allowed more dramatic roles.
