By the way, the new X-Men was pretty good. McAvoy owns the entire thing. I'd go as far to argue he outdoes Fassbender in First Class.

Louis: Your rating & thoughts on Rod Steiger in The Mark & Takashi Shimura in Yojimbo.

Also, have you seen X-Men Days of Future Past yet, if so, thoughts on the film & thoughts and ratings for the cast.

Are you happy Michael Patison =D that Real Madrid are the champions lol =D.

Luke Higham said...

For all Football/Soccer fans on the blog, I'm very happy for Fellow Brit, Gareth Bale.

RatedRStar said...

@Luke: I am 2, to think that Atletico were minutes away from winning.

RatedRStar said...

Anyway back to oscars lol =D, I have just seen Calvary, Louis, surely you must have Brendan Gleesons performance on ur radar, he is great =D.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: There is no question, in my mind that Gleeson will be reviewed for Alternative Best Actor 2014, since Louis has a great appreciation for him.
Also what would your initial rating be for him.

RatedRStar said...

I would give Brendan Gleeson a five its the best performance I have seen him give, maybe even better than In Bruges, I think he managed to create an original character, that managed to be complex, especially in the scenes when he is confronted by the killer, and his scenes when he accepts that killing might be acceptable given the circumstances.

RatedRStar said...

Its amazing how I have 3 five star contenders that wont be oscar nominated but should be considered Louis =D.

Tom Hardy - Locke
Ralph Fiennes - The Grand Budapest Hotel
Brendan Gleeson - Calvary

Surely everybody must feel the same way as I do about these 3 perfomers =D.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I haven't seen the films yet, but I 100% agree on their talents alone,

Like I said previously, I hope Louis reviews all the 5 star performances, he's seen this year instead of leaving out 1 or 2 that didn't make the cut for his alternative lineup.

Also, have you seen Frank yet.

Lastly, I must congratulate Timothy Spall on his Cannes Win today, Him & Steve Carell seem like definite Oscar Nominees in my eyes.

RatedRStar said...

Timothy Spall is usually great in anything, Steve Carell is always good but from what I have heard, his creepy power hungry turn looks interesting, he looks creepy as fuck in the trailer for Foxcatcher,

And yes I have seen Frank and I liked it ( I am A Fassbender fan after all lol =D plus a Mark Kermode fan as well so I caught his review on it which entised me)

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: What rating would you give to Fassbender.

RatedRStar said...

I would give Fassbender a 4.5, I thought he was likable and managed to make his characters strange personality believable in a very strange but interesting film =D.

RatedRStar said...

I should also say Brendan Gleesons eldest son, Domhnall Gleeson was also very good in Frank =D.

Michael McCarthy said...

Haven't seen Locke or Calvary yet, but I'd definitely give Fiennes a 5 for GBH.

Luke:

Steiger - 4(A very nice performance by Steiger and uses the Irish accent well to basically soften his whole presence well. It's supporting in the purest sense and gives a honest tender performance that works incredibly well off of Whitman's performance)

Shimura - 2.5(I kinda feel bad for Shimura in the 60's Kurosawa films since his roles are so small even though he played the lead in so many of his other films. Also he always knew how to play off of Mifune so its particularly disappointing that he does not really share any scenes with him here or in High and Low. His role is very small here but he does completely fulfill his part as a sleazy old man)

I think I'll probably be watching X-Men later tonight so I'll get back to you.

RatedRStar: I was actually strongly thinking about reviewing Rooney but I figured then I'd have to find a way to contact Tatsuya Nakadai just to apologize to him for putting him in a line up with that performance.

Rooney - 1(Since my rating does not go any lower, and he is not worthy of a Wiseau which is reserved for performances that are entertainingly bad. Rooney is just bad in pretty much every way. He seems out of place in the film then it is just bizarre to see him in it at all as he basically tries to check every mark on the Asian stereotype list in explosion of awkwardness. To be fair this would have been a bad character even with an Asian in the role but with Rooney it just puts it on a whole different level of badness)

Michael Patison said...

RatedRStar/Luke: I am quite happy. To be honest, I'm only recently converted to both the team and the sport in general, but I've taken quickly. I haven't actually seen the game, but will be watching it soon.

To think fans were questioning Bale's signing because he had yet to score a goal in an important game. Then he goes and scores the winning goal in the Copa del Rey and the go ahead in extra time this time around. Maybe he can't score goals in big, only the biggest.

Kevin said...

Well, since we are all talking about sports, anyone watches the NBA or basketball in general?

Michael McCarthy said...

Oh wow I almost forgot:

1. Tatsuya Nakadai
2. Karl Malden
3. Eli Wallach
4. Burt Lancaster
5. Anthony Quinn

Kevin: Sometimes. I'm a Mavs fan, but I don't hate the Spurs as most do.

Kevin said...

@Michael: Haha well I am a Spurs fan, but Mavs are a very good team too. I got a lotta respect for Dirk in particular

John Smith said...

Your thught on Justin Timberlake in Inside Llewyn Davis and The Social Network

Michael Patison said...

Kevin: I used to really not like the Spurs, then we won the Championship and I saw little reason to dislike them anymore, and now I actually sort of like them. They show that you don't have to be flashy to be successful in the league. it's kind of funny that I like them because of that and then like Real because they are so flashy.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: have you seen X-Men Days of Future Past yet, if so, thoughts on the film & thoughts and ratings for the cast.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke:

I thought Days of the Future Past was pretty good for a film basically designed to wipe away X-Men 3. I'm glad that it just basically went with its continuity heavy style comic plot, and made an entertaining film around it. It's far from flawless, but it moves along very nicely and has some of the best acting in the series.

The Cast:

Hugh Jackman - 3.5(I actually thought this was his best performance as Wolverine. He acted well as the solid lead who was the connection between the past and the future stories)

James McAvoy - 4(He was quite terrific here in making himself the emotional core of the film. He was rather surprisingly moving in portraying the shattered Xavier, and very effectively explored the trauma of the character. His character's arc is technically even fairly swift but McAvoy makes it feel natural and makes a strong impact with every scene he is in)

Jennifer Lawrence - 3(I had a strong sense that this film was written with the popularity of Lawrence a little too in mind. Nevertheless she is solid enough in portraying the character's unshakable drive)

Patrick Stewart - 3.5(I thought this was easily his best portrayal of Xavier as he had his usual proper command and conviction but really was very effective in conveying what the results of the future had on Professor X)

Michael Fassbender - 3.5(Again he brings the right fierce passion to the role that is needed, but unfortunately this time they only really had him retread what he had already with the role in the last film)

Evan Peters - 3.5(I wish he was playing both Quicksilvers now. He could have been annoying but I found him really quite entertaining and endearing in the role. I frankly could have gone for more of him.)

Peter Dinklage - 3(He was truly wasted here, and really Trask would have been a non entity if it were not for Dinklage playing him. The character is extremely thin with all of his scenes feeling frankly a bit rushed. It's just a testament to his charisma that he does manage to make it so you at least remember Trask is in the film when he is not on screen)

The rest of the cast in the future, other than Stewart, I thought were all fine but just did not have a lot to do.

John Smith:

Social Network - 2.5(A performance I'm probably harsher on than I should be because he's completely solid in playing the quick talking mentor. Where I find fault is in his portrayal of the character's paranoia. He does not imbue well in his more normal scenes and when it comes out it seems unnatural)

Inside Llewellyn Davis - 2.5(Very limited here in that he seems there basically sing a song, but he certainly handles the part just as he should)

Matt Mustin said...

You know what, I would give James McAvoy a five for Days of Future Past. I thought he gave the best performance not only in the film, but of the entire franchise.

Louis Morgan said...

I actually meant to give McAvoy a 4.5, he really gave it his all in this one and I agree he gave the best performance from the series.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What was your rating & thoughts on Brian Cox in X2.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: At the moment, is McAvoy's Performance, the best you've seen this year.

Matt Mustin said...

Luke: It's certainly *my* favourite, and if it were up to me he'd get a nomination.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: - 4(It's very enjoyable villainous turn by Cox as he gives just enough flamboyance without going overboard, and by still showing the truth of what motivates Stryker. I particularly like the scenes with Jackman where Cox certainly suggests a far more interesting past than the one we were given in Wolverine Orgins)

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: To the second question yes.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Lastly, are McAvoy, Jackman & Fassbender, Lead or Supporting.

Louis Morgan said...

It would be easy enough to put everyone supporting but I suppose I would say Jackman is lead, Fassbender is definitely supporting though, and although he's right on the border I think I'd put McAvoy supporting as well.

Matt Mustin said...

I would say McAvoy's lead, although it's certainly arguable. Jackman is definitely lead, I think.

Michael McCarthy said...

Louis, is there any chance of you going back to 1965 supporting actor after this year?

Robert MacFarlane said...

I LOVED McAvoy. He was fricking fantastic. You could tell he was invested entirely in the role.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Also, McAvoy is totally lead.

moviefilm said...

1) Tatsuya Nakadai
2) Elli Wallach
3) Burt Lancaster (I liked him well enough, he was very solid, one of the few performances from that film that I remember)
4) Anthony Quinn
5) Karl Malden

Just a random question for Louis or anyone else,

Having rewatched Scott Pilgrim Vs The World recently, I realised how bad Cera was. Who would you rather have cast as Scott Pilgrim? Personally, I would go with Evan Peters

moviefilm said...

I think the badness of Cera's acting actually matches with his character. I have never liked Cera personally, for example in Juno I found him extremely lackluster and boring. But in Scott Pilgrim his bad acting didn't disturb me. In fact, I though it fitted this genre and character.
