Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1986: Results

5. Raul Julia in The Morning After- Julia is going against a terrible film, but he does rise enough above it to give some depth to a role.

Best Scene: The Revelation.
4. Steve Martin in Little Shop of Horrors- Martin may peak with his song, but that is one entertaining peak to reach.

Best Scene: "Dentist!"
3. Brian Cox in Manhunter- Cox gives us his own Hannibal that emphasizing the intelligence once again, but with with a very effective more down to earth style.

Best Scene: Hannibal's introduction.
2. Daniel Day-Lewis in A Room With A View- Day-Lewis gives a brilliant portrayal of the ultimate Edwardian man which he makes amusing in the extremity yet completely natural to his character.

Best Scene: Lucy breaks off the engagement with Cecil.
1. Dennis Hopper in Blue Velvet- Good Predictions Psifonian, Lezlie, Maciej, RatedRStar,  and Michael McCarthy. Despite this year having several strong strong supporting performances I have no hesitations in rewarding Hopper the win here. He is absolutely amazing with his searing and completely unforgettable depiction of the twisted Frank Booth.

Louis: ratings & thoughts on the cast of Aliens

The five, that I would pick for 2009 lead are:
Viggo Mortensen in The Road
Sharlto Copley in District 9
Tom Hardy in Bronson
Sam Rockwell in Moon
Nicholas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of New Orleans

I don't mind Levitt being reviewed for 500: DOS, but for the love of god, do not pick Maguire over Hardy, or there will be hell to pay.

Louis: lastly, can I have your ratings & thoughts on Ben Foster in The Messenger & Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers.

Michael Patison said...

Before I leave suggestions, what were the 4 requests?

RatedRStar said...

I have it marked down

Sharlito Copley - District 9
Viggo Mortensen - The Road
Joseph Gordon Levitt - 500 Days Of Summer
Tobey Maguire - Brothers

RatedRStar said...

Funny how there was only 1 winning request for supporting 2009 lol.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Okay, I'll leave out the four requests and just suggest one:

Sam Rockwell in Moon

Alternatively, you could review 10 snubs. Here are 5 more:

Tahar Rahim in Un prophete
Tom Hardy in Bronson
Jake Gyllenhaal in Brothers (a much better performance than his co-star)
Ben Foster in The Messenger
Matt Damon in The Informant!

Luke:

Man....I'm always getting threats here..anyway

Aliens:

Weaver - 5(She's brings such a dramatic weight to the proceedings once again, and gives an exceptional and surprisingly believable portrayal of her character's change from a traumatized survivor to that of heroic badass)

Biehn - 4(Biehn, like in Terminator, has the right presence for the role as he naturally brings the strength needed for the part. He goes further than that with an honest warmth in naturally brings with Hicks, and it also helps that he has a nice chemistry with Weaver)

Henriksen - 4(Henriksen very effectively keeps you guessing about Bishop's nature by realizing the artifice of the entity through his off performance, and this makes it all the more powerful though when he so gently reveals that Bishop could be trusted all along)

Goldstein - 3.5(Mostly there just to look tough and have her quick one liners. She definitely comes across as tough and delivers the lines well so a job well done)

Henn - 3.5(I'd say there are perhaps a few moments of a slight child actor awkwardness but for the most part she excels in making you care about Newt as well as see how it was suggest how it was that she managed to survive)

Hope - 3(Mostly there as the dumb high up following too many procedures, but he is rather good in the later scenes by gaining the right sympathy by genuinely showing that the character recognizes his faults)

Reiser - 3.5(He's a good corporate weasel by always keeping that public relations face and attitude on even when he is suggesting and doing some very deplorable things)

Paxton - 3.5(I know for a fact that he is not everyone favorite performance, but I think even haters would have to concede that he is memorable. Sure he is obnoxious but I have to say I found him pretty enjoyable obnoxious here)

Ben Foster - The Messenger - 4.5(Utilizes his intensity well here to always suggest the psychological trauma he endured, but he goes further than that giving a believable portrayal of his character's challenging time in doing a very difficult job)

I have not watched Brothers yet.

Other four requests aside:
Sam Rockwell in Moon

If you end up doing 10:
Nicolas Cage in Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
Viggo Mortensen in The Road
Michael Stuhlbarg in A Serious Man
Matt Damon in The Informant!

Luke Higham said...

Just to remind everyone, Stuhlbarg received a 4.5 from Louis.

I think you accidentally linked this to the Alternate Best Actor page instead of the Alternate Best Supporting Actor page.

After seeing Aliens, Louis, did it change your opinion of Alien3 at all?

Mark said...

And is Dennis Hopper's performance the "censored" performance in your top 10 supporting actor list?

Michael Patison said...

Louis, what would be your top 5 most underused actors over the age of 60?

Maciej said...

1.Nicolas Cage - Bad Lieutenant
2.Sam Rockwell - Moon
3.Brad Pitt - Inglourious Basterds
4.Ricardo Darin - El Secreto de Sus Ojos

As for my winning request, I'd like you to review Ian Holm in The Sweet Hereafter for Best Leading Actor '97.

Maciej said...

Oh, I forgot to add Levitt in 500 Days of Summer.

Luke: Aliens made itself standout well as a sequel by seamlessly making the transition from the first one's direct horror to it's more action orientated film with some horror. Cameron actually bothered to write a script this time by naturally continuing Ripley's story along with some interesting and entertaining supporting character. He builds tension incredibly well and yes I find this easily his best film.

Mark: Looking at Alien 3 as only the continuation for Ripley I think it works as continuation for Hicks, Newt and Bishop it is a slap in the face. Nevertheless even though that opening does sting more, I still think it's a solid film that stands on its own merits past the unfortunate set up.

And yes that was Hopper.

Michael Patison:

1. Christopher Lloyd
2. James Woods
3. Jeff Goldblum
4. Tim Curry
5. William Hurt

I'd say Joe Pesci and Gene Hackman but that seems to be their choice.

Psifonian said...

1. Mortensen, The Road
2. Copley, District 9
3. Cage, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans
4. Hardy, Bronson
5. Mikkelsen, Valhalla Rising

I got a winning request for 1995 Supporting Actor. Peter Dinklage in Living in Oblivion. It's very obscure and there are some mixed feelings about it, but I found it very entertaining and in a lot of ways quite realistic. Dinklage is little more than a one-scene wonder, but he's absolutely hysterical every moment he's on screen.

Lezlie said...

I didn't find Dinklage that great in his one scene, however he was great in The Station Agent, and is continuosly epic in Game of Thrones. Most of the cast of that show are fantastic, in my opinion. I don't yet know what my winning request should be, I'll think about it for a little while.
