Alternate Best Actor 2013: Results

5. Jake Gyllenhaal in Prisoners- Gyllenhaal gives probably his best performance in his full depiction of a detective investigating a terrible crime in both the official process but also the emotional impact.

Best Scene: Loki rushes to the hospital.
4. Joaquin Phoenix in Her- Phoenix gives a nice counterpoint to his great performance in the Master with his warm and endearing portrayal of a lonely man.

Best Scene:  Theodore begins his romantic relationship with Samantha.
3. Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips- Hanks gives an excellent turn underplaying nicely while keeping the intensity of the film, then absolutely bringing the emotional power to his final scene.

Best Scene: Phillips goes into shock.
2. Oscar Isaac in Inside Llewyn Davis- Isaac gives a fantastic performance as a jerk by realizing him fully as a person from the great amount of heart he puts into his music, to his less savory qualities off the stage.

Best Scene: Fare Thee Well
1. James McAvoy in Filth- This year was amazing for lead actor and that's all there is to it. It really explains the strength of the Academy lineup because honestly it was just too difficult to really mess up, although they still managed to ever so slightly, as it seemed everyone was on top their game. Even Christian Bale the weakest of the nominees gave a great performance in Out of the Furnace to make up for it seems. My favorite of all theses great and often career best performances is James McAvoy's performance in Filth. I love every moment of this insane work that is a great achievement in dark comedy, but also an equally tragic turn at the same time.

Best Scene: The ending.

Well if anyone had to beat Matthew, I'm glad it was McAvoy, he's the only one who is challenging McConaughey's top spot for me.

Alec Baldwin-Glengarry Glen Ross
Michael Madsen-Reservoir Dogs
Richard Harris-Unforgiven
Eric Schweig or Russell Means-The Last of the Mohicans
Jaimz Woolvett-Unforgiven (I'm sure people will disagree on this one and I know that he makes his character's facade a bit obvious, but I personally thought his big scene at the end was heartbreaking.)

Am I the only one who preferred Morgan Freeman over Richard Harris?

Michael Patison said...

Also, I'm very surprised McConaughey was unseated so now I guess I'll have to find a way to see Filth.

But what a ridiculously strong year! As far as I can tell the 4.5s go through Simon Pegg at #16 and the 4s at least through Benedict Cumberbatch at #29 (unless you've changed your rating on him since asked about it a while ago).

On an unrelated note, I'd be interested to see who you would nominate for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress since 2000. I know that's something that might take some time, but I was interested in seeing it as some point.

Danny Devito in Batman Returns lol.

Luke:

Shannon - 4.5(Chilling performance and intense. He managed to make the whole family man/ serial killer dynamic actually work quite effectively)

Sheridan - 4.5(Very moving and incredibly natural performance that carries the picture seemingly without any visible effort)

Rockwell - 4.5(Decidedly not Rockwellian here. He's very strong giving a powerful portrayal of his character's guilt and tremendous pressure that I felt overcame the weaknesses of the film)

Jude Law in Side Effects - 4(Interesting performance in that it seems that more typical colder Law at first, but ends up making an remarkable change by revealing the vulnerability of his character after the twist)

Coogan - 4(Solid performance from him with an appropriate amount of chemistry with Dench. He is very convincing in his portrayal of the intellectual and does not hold back on his certain pompous qualities, but as well a certain passion)

Dench - 4.5(I really liked her here as she sheds her usual Dench style here giving a very warm and always genuine feeling performance)

I've given my thoughts on Bruhl previously.

Michael: I'll definitely try to get to it.

Noticing the rankings again, did you really hate Don Jon that much? As someone from Jersey, I assure you those accents were subtle in comparison to the actual thing.

Louis Morgan said...

I did not have a problem with his accent, I just did not find his performance that funny, nor did he make me interested in Don Jon in anyway. Hate is far too strong of a word though even for my lower section of my ranking as I don't really even hate Wahlberg completely.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what's the rating for Bale in Out of the Furnace.

Louis Morgan said...

4.5

Luke Higham said...

Louis: are there any films for 2014, that you've seen yet.

Louis Morgan said...

Not at the moment.

Michael McCarthy said...

The only one I've seen is The Lego Movie. Which is phenomenal by the way.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: I forgot about this before, but what were your thoughts on Frozen, as well as the characters.

Louis Morgan said...

I really enjoyed Frozen a lot and found the characters to be thoroughly endearing including Olaf, who before watching the film I was concerned would be obnoxious but found entertaining when actually watching the film.
