So, Hill somehow managed to slip into the Bruhl's spot...

Anyway, I've seen only Abdi and he was amazing: managed to fully realize his character despite the nature of the movie, something Hanks failed to do. I will definitely see Hill this weekend and I have to wait for the rest unfortunately...

1.Fassbender
2.Leto
3.Abdi
4.Cooper
5.Hill

And what do you think of the nominations, Louis?

I wanted to start doing this category today, but I don't want the both of us to do the same year at the same time, so I'll do supporting actress first. (And I hope I'll have a chance to see Nebraska soon.)
And here I my predictions for your ranking:
1) Jared Leto
2) Michael Fassbender
3) Barkhad Abdi
4) Jonah Hill
5) Bradley Cooper

I woke up at 7:15 just so that I could be monumentally disappointed by all of the American Hustle love. Oh well.
1. Michael Fassbender (5)
2. Jared Leto (5)
3. Barkhad Abdi (4.5 or 5)
4. Jonah Hill (3)
5. Bradley Cooper (2)

My guess:

1. Leto
2. Abdi
3. Fassbender
4. Hill
5. Cooper

Louis Morgan said...

Maciej: Technically they made a lot of great choices both in keeping with precursors and diverging from them (leaving off Oprah was a good thing for example). But as usual there were some questionable choices such as their absurd love for O'Russell.

Do you have a quick #1-5 ranking for the Actresses/Supporting Actresses, Louis? Just wondering since you only review best actor/supp. actor

Lezlie said...

Hey!
There were some surprises here and there, for me at least. Predictions:

1. Jared Leto
2. Michael Fassbender
3. Barkhad Abdi
4. Jonah Hill
5. Bradley Cooper

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm not as upset about Hanks as most. But then again, I liked Abdi more.

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous: Sure, although they are incomplete at the moment.

Actress:

1.Bullock
2.Blanchett
3.Streep
4.Adams

Supporting Actress:

1.Nyong'o
2.Hawkins
3.Roberts
4.Lawrence

Anonymous said...

Thanks for posting them. Did you think Blanchett will be deserving of her (inevitably) 2nd oscar? Just curious, I liked her quite a lot, since you ranked her second.

I am also in full agreement with you about the cast of American hustle... I don't know if it was the writing, or it the four actors nominated decided to BS the film.

Robert MacFarlane said...

How I'd rank the women (haven't seen Philomena)

1. Blanchett - 5
2. Adams - 4.5
3. Bullock - 4.5
4. Streep - 1.5

1. Nyongo'o - 5
2. Hawkins - 4.5
3. Lawrence - 4
4. Roberts - 4
5. Squibb - 3

Louis Morgan said...

Anonymous: I should say there is a big jump between Blanchett and Streep. I thought Blanchett was indeed very good so I would say her win will be deserving enough.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I certainly wasn't that impressed by the ladies in Osage County either. It's a shame they didn't nominate Gerwig from Francis Ha, or nominate the two deserving actors from Enough Said (Louis-Dreyfus/Gandolfini).

Maciej said...

Louis: yeah, I also cannot comprehend the fact that from 2010 Russell gets a nod for his every movie, occupying a slot for someone more deserving (in 2010: Nolan, in 2012: Affleck, in 2013: Grenngrass)

Matt Mustin said...

Man, FUCK American Hustle!

Luke Higham said...

David O'Russell is probably the most overrated director in the film industry right now.

Matt Mustin said...

Predictions:
1.Fassbender
2.Leto
3.Abdi
4.Hill
5. Cooper

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Are you happy that Fassbender finally got nominated.

Matt Mustin said...

Luke: Silver Linings Playbook was AMAZING,The Fighter was very good. Hustle is the first film I've seen from him that I've disliked.

And it's David O. Russell, NOT David O'Russell.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Certainly.

Matt: Eh that lout doesn't need his name spelled correctly.

Matt Mustin said...

Louis: Hey, as I recall, you were a fan of Silver Linings Playbook.

Luke Higham said...

Matt Mustin: Silver Linings Playbook is the only film other than three kings, that I liked, although that is due to the acting of the main leads. Not the Direction. The Fighter was fine, although I prefer Warrior when it comes to recent fight films & American Hustle was Boring as F***

Thanks for correcting me on O. Russell.

Louis Morgan said...

Matt: For once I referring to his personal behavior.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Agreed, He's an utter douchebag, who keeps getting a BJ from the academy.

Matt Mustin said...

Louis: Ah, okay, I agree.
Luke: I think I liked Warrior better too, but the performances in The Fighter are just too good to ignore.

Robert MacFarlane said...

I'm actually a HUGE fan of The Fighter, and I think Warrior was too dumb to consider it even in the same league. The only thing that really impressed me in Warrior was Edgerton. Yeah, I know Hardy used his physicality and had a more tragic character blah blah blah, Edgerton did more with those sad eyes of his than the movie deserved.

Luke Higham said...

Matt Mustin: I thought Christian Bale was really good, although the formulaic script let him down a bit, Leo & Adams are fine, nothing special & Mark Wahlberg is his usual one note, tough guy self.

Robert MacFarlane said...

It's sad I'm the only one here that at least liked the acting in Hustle. Maybe because I'm from Jersey.

Luke Higham said...

Koook160: I'm not totally dissing the acting, I thought Christian Bale was the best out of the four main characters & Jeremy Renner gave the best performance, but should've had more material

moviefilm said...

I also like it, don't worry, kook... :)

Matt Mustin said...

koook: I thought Bale and Adams were both terrific.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: My fears have been realised, American Hustle, Best Picture Winner

Robert MacFarlane said...

HA! Don't get your tits in a twist, 12 Years is gonna win.

Luke Higham said...

Koook160: I F***** hope so, If anything beats 12 Years, Gravity or The Wolf of Wall Street, then fuck the academy.

Luke Higham said...

I haven't seen Captain Phillips, Her or Dallas Buyers Club, so please don't judge me

Michael McCarthy said...

I actually liked American Hustle, but I don't think Bale or Cooper should've been nominated. If there's anyone who should've been nominated over him (and I'd sooner knock out Alexander Payne), it's absolutely Spike Jonze. He did a beautiful job with Her.

Also Louis, which are you going to review first, the Alternates for supporting actor 2013 or the oscar nominations for lead 2013?

Louis Morgan said...

Michael: Probably the official leads.

RatedRStar said...

No Forest Whitaker yay.

I'm so glad about Redford's snub. There was nothing award-worthy about his performance. But I'm very sad about Hanks's, Bruhl's and Thompson's snubs. They were all great.
BTW, I started doing best supporting actress on my blog, so check it out, in case you're interested... :)

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: what were your thoughts on Bruhl's snub.

Luke Higham said...

I can't believe Cooper & Hill are Two time nominees.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: What rating would you give Cate Blanchett.

Louis Morgan said...

4.5.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Are you amazed that Jonah Hill is now a 2 time nominee.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Have you seen Prisoners, if so what were your thoughts on Jackman & Gyllenhaal

Mark said...

1. Leto
2. Fassbender
3. Abdi
4. Hill
5. Cooper

Interesting year all around. I don't think that five years ago, anyone would've expected Hill and Cooper to be nominees at all, much less two time nominees. Even crazier, they're the only ones in the category to have been nominated before.

Mark said...

Something else interesting: with a few exceptions (like last year), every Best Picture winner since 1980 also has been nominated for Director, Screenplay, and Editing. Only two movies have all those nominations this year: 12 Years a Slave and American Hustle. So let's all hope 12 Years a Slave bring homes the gold.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: He could possibly become the new Arthur Kennedy, while Philip Seymour Hoffman is the Claude Rains.

I saw Prisoners Gyllenhaal was excellent (it's a shame he could not find any traction), Jackman's performance was a bit overblown.

Luke Higham said...

Mark: Agreed

If American Hustle Wins, It'll join Crash, Million Dollar Baby & Chicago as the worst best picture winners of the century so far.

Gladiator had a great performance by Oliver Reed.
A Beautiful Mind had a excellent performance by Russell Crowe.
Slumdog Millionaire was the only decent film in the 2008 lineup.
The King's Speech, I enjoyed well enough, although that's the history nerd in me.
Argo was very good for what it was, as escapist entertainment.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: who are your best picture choices from 2000 to 2013 (actual nominees)

Louis Morgan said...

2000- Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon
2001- The Fellowship of the Ring
2002- The Pianist
2003- The Return of the King
2004- The Aviator
2005- Good Night and Good Luck
2006- The Departed
2007- There Will Be Blood
2008- Frost/Nixon (terrible line-up)
2009- Inglourious Basterds
2010- The Social Network
2011- The Artist
2012- Zero Dark Thirty
2013- 12 Years a Slave

Luke Higham said...

Louis: A bit surprised with your pick for there will be blood. Do you appreciate Daniel Day Lewis's performance more or still the same.

Louis Morgan said...

Don't forget he is my choice out of the nominees, I might not be as big on his performance as some but I still feel it is strong work.

Luke Higham said...

What rating would you give Jessica Chastain in Zero Dark Thirty

Louis Morgan said...

4.5.

Luke Higham said...

Are there any 5 star Female performances in the last 15 years, that you have seen.

RatedRStar said...

Well the main person that I rooted for was Leonardo DiCaprio since its been so long, 6 years is a long time to wait for your fourth nomination, so Bruhl being snubbed is of no concern to me anymore (im cold hearted like that). I am even cool with Jonah Hills nomination, he was better in Wolf than Moneyball.

RatedRStar said...

Phillip Seymour Hoffman the new Claude Rains, im not sure about that lol.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Charlize Theron in Monster.

RatedRStar: Well he's almost tied for the supporting nominations record.

RatedRStar said...

Also most people here seem to dislike O Russell, how come, I dont really no anything about his behaviour, what does he do? is it similar to my nemesis Joaquin?

Also, Louis, looks like since 2013 nominees were good enough for me, you ll have to wait for 1946 for the angry rant.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: when it comes to not winning an oscar, could Dicaprio join Burton & O'Toole for the most losses. Dicaprio really deserves more respect from his peers, than he has right now, considering where he was 17 years ago as the headstrong romantic type in Romeo + Juliet & Titanic

Louis Morgan said...

RatedRStar: He put Christopher Nolan in a headlock for trying to steal Jude Law for a film, he got into a fistfight with George Clooney because O. Russell was harassing extras, and just watch his fights with Lily Tomlin on youtube. (There's even more than that even)

RatedRStar said...

if Leonardo DiCaprio gets like 7 nominations, and never wins then, at least he is being nominated, thats good enough for me nowadays, being nominated is more important nowadays then winning.

RatedRStar said...

@Louis Morgan: oh right I didnt know, maybe id like to have a fist fight with him lol, I might get support then my rivalry with Phoenix.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: If he keeps getting nominated for 4 star plus performances, I'll be happy enough too.

Luke Higham said...

It's so satisfying to hear the words: Michael Fassbender: Academy Award Nominee

Michael Patison said...

Maciej: I know this was a long, long way back in the thread, but I disagree with David O. Russell being less deserving than Affleck last year. Affleck's direction was nothing more than standard, whereas Russell's was underrated. He had to make the film's tone a funny one without being exploitative and I think he did a terrific job.

Luke Higham said...

Michael Patison: What were your thoughts on the Baelor Episode in Game of Thrones.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what did you think of Mo'nique in Precious.

Louis Morgan said...

Her performance was terrific portrayal of unrepentant selfishness and cruelty. I would give her a 5.

Mark said...

Yeah if George Clooney is in a fight with someone and Louis sides with George Clooney, you know that the other guy has got to be an asshole.

RatedRStar said...

=D yep, hell I would probably defend Phoenix if this Russell fella is really a douche.

One thing that surprised me Louis, is The Grandmaster getting 2 nominations but not 1 for Foreign Language lol

Louis Morgan said...

Well you can certainly give the cinematographers some credits for not falling in line and recognizing The Grandmaster, Prisoners and Inside Llewyn Davis despite those films being either largely or completely ignored elsewhere.

Matt Mustin said...

That's one more nomination for the great Roger Deakins. Shame he has no chance.

Maciej said...

Michael Patison: Well, I wouldn't agree. I mean I would agree about him not being exploitative, but only about the first half of the movie. Then, SLP turned into very predictable, schmaltzy and completely improbable rom-com. Affleck managed to capture the zeitgeist of the late 70's and did a fantastic job of keeping the audience (or at least me) on the edge of my seat. Then again, I completely forgot in the post-nominations frenzy that Bigelow did even a better job with ZDT, so I guess it should be her that got robbed to an even greater extent. Anyway, my line-up for the year would be: Bigelow for "Zero Dark Thirty" (winner), Affleck for "Argo", Spielberg for "Lincoln", Haneke for "Amour" and Ayer for "End of Watch". Out of curiosity who would you nominate?

Psifonian said...

1. Abdi
2. Leto
3. Fassbender
4. Hill
5. Cooper

Michael Patison said...

Maciej: I have see so little relatively speaking that I don't want to comment on that.
