Alternate Best Supporting Actor 1970: Results

5. Leonard Frey in The Boys in the Band- Frey, although his voice is a bit theatrical, gives an effective in his portraying his character's sharp cynicism.

Best Scene: Harold cuts Michael down.
4. Donald Sutherland in Kelly's Heroes- Sutherland gives a weird performance but an endearing character as the aptly named Oddball.

Best Scene: Oddball takes a break from battle.
3. Trevor Howard in Ryan's Daughter- Howard gives a strong performance that deftly mixes in rather coarse qualities with a genuine heart.

Best Scene: Father Hugh talks to Rosy about marriage.
2. Alec Guinness in Scrooge- Guinness has only two scenes but two scenes of brilliance in his dryly comic performance as a ghost.

Best Scene: Marley in Hell.
1. Karl Malden in Patton- Good Predictions JackiBoyz, Maciej, and Kevin. Karl Malden gives a great performance as the unassuming General Omar Bradley by being the perfect foil for George. C. Scott's depiction of the pride filled Patton, and showing that a modest man can still be a complex man.

Best Scene: Bradley openly speaks his mind to Patton.

Finally, here at last.

RatedRStar: Are you looking forward to Kingdom Hearts III

Luke Higham said...

If Michael Fassbender doesn't get nominated again, all I will say is **** the academy

RatedRStar said...

Yes I am looking forward to Kingdom Hearts 3 =), its probably the only game series that Square Enix consistently does well.

JackiBoyz said...

Louis, for 1979 Supporting, are you planning on reviewing the cast for Alien, since I think they all do well?

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Final Fantasy's really gone down the shit, the last 15 years although XV looks tempting. But really I'm most looking forward to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt by CD Projekt Red.

JackiBoyz said...

For my winning request, I think I will do a RatedRStar and go asian, I will go for the fallen idol who sadly commited suicide in 2003.

Leslie Cheung - Days Of Being Wild (Best Actor 1990)

Ulrich Muhe in The Lives of Others

Luke, do you live in the UK, cause ive been trying to find out what time the oscar nominations will be announced, last year it was in the morning but im not sure this time.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: If you have Sky TV or Freeview, the nominations will be announced on the BBC News Channel from 1:30-2:00 PM.

My request would be Gene Hackman in "Hoosiers" for 1986 Best Actor.

I'me really excited about the nominations! In Poland, the contenders usualy open after the nominations or even after the ceremony, so usualy it is after the announcement that I know which movie to see.

JackiBoyz: I think Ian Holm is the clear standout in Alien, but that's just me.

Mark said...

Yeah, what moron thought it would be a good idea to announce the Oscar nominations at 5:30 AM PST? That's ridiculous. I feel bad for the people that have to wake up that early just for that.

Louis Morgan said...

JackiBoyz: Holm is usually considered to be the standout but we'll see when I get to that year.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Have you seen Aliens

Louis Morgan said...

No I haven't actually.

Did anybody watch the premiere of True Detective? I've heard it's excellent, but I don't get HBO.

Luke Higham said...

Has anyone watched Game of Thrones, if so, what are your thoughts

Michael Patison said...

Matt: I did not see the True Detective premiere, but a friend and are plan on watching on HBOgo at some point in the next several months. Living in a college dorm, I don't have access to HBO either, so I would have to watch via HBOgo even if I were able to catch up.

Luke: I have seen just the first 9 episodes (9/10 of the first season) of Game of Thrones, but am currently in the process of watching all 30 episodes before the 4th season's April 6th release.

I have also read the first 2 books in the series, so I can't tell you how great it is from that perspective, but almost all of my friends that watch it haven't read them and think it's great.

I think it's terrific. The scripts are excellent, which is rare for a fantasy. Having read the first two books, it's also really cool seeing how they include foreshadowing in a visual way that isn't in the books (or I don't remember it, at least).

The acting is not universally excellent, but it is no worse than average all of the time, which is incredible given the enormous size of the cast. The main cast members are all very good, so they save all of the scenes that run the risk of being taken down by the series' worse actors. I have a friend who thinks a couple of the main characters overact periodically, but I disagree.

I'll give a quick rundown on my favorites of the first season:
-Sean Bean is great as Lord Eddard "Ned" Stark. It's very similar to his usual sort of part in some ways and different in others. Anyway, his character doesn't really change, remaining steadfast in his honorable ways, but shows his emotions brilliantly when necessary.
-Peter Dinklage is the show's MVP as Tyrion Lannister. He's just brilliant is every scene. His character is more complex, requiring an outer façade of confidence that, more often than not, is arrogance and is coupled with great intelligence and cunning, but with a sad past, and he does it
Furthermore, he is exactly as I envisioned him while reading the books. I can't wait for the second season because the second book is even better where his character is concerned.
-I also really like Aidan Gillen as Petyr Baelish, or Littlefinger, because he's great at walking that fine between being wonderfully theatrical and being terribly theatrical (over-the-top, if you will).
-Emilia Clarke as Daenerys Targaryen, Kit Harington as Jon Snow, Lena Headey as Queen Cersei Lannister, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as Ser Jaime Lannister, and Michelle Fairley as Lady Catelyn, and Conleth Hill as Lord Varys (for the same reasons as Gillen), and Iain Glen as Jorah Mormont are all quite good as well. I can't wait for Clarke, Headey, and Coster-Waldau to be given more to do, and I hope Harington gets more things to do.

All of the show's other main cast members fulfill their parts well, but most of them are, at best, two-dimensional parts. Of the main characters I've encountered, only Harry Lloyd as Viserys Targaryen and Jack Gleeson as Prince Joffrey Baratheon (who's alternately funny and/or annoying instead of hate-worthy) are sub-par in my opinion.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Just saw August: Osage County. I thought it was fairly mediocre with a SHOCKINGLY bad performance from Meryl Streep. The rest of the cast was good, especially Nicholson, Cooper, and McGregor.

Michael McCarthy said...

Michael: I don't read the books, but GoT is currently my favorite show. I've loved Peter Dinklage since the start and he truly excels in season 2, so rest assured. Season 3 is the best yet though, and i personally believe Emilia Clarke steals it. However, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau is doing a terrific job with his character's development, including a BRILLIANT piece of acting when he has a monologue about why he killed the Mad King. Also Michelle Fairley does a magnificent job with Catelyn Stark, especially in the Red Wedding scene.

They snubbed Daniel Bruhl !!!!!!!!

Luke Higham said...

Yes! Finally, Fassbender gets a nomination. The lead actor category should be in Louis,s overall top 5.

Kevin said...

Geez the academy really loved American Hustle...

No Tom Hanks, no Daniel Bruhl, no Emma Thompson, and Inside Llewyn Davis got nothing...

Michael McCarthy said...

Sad about Daniel Bruhl....and Tom Hanks not getting nominated for Captain Phillips (in favor of Christian Bale I guess) I'm glad Philomena and Dallas Buyers Club got nominated over Saving Mr. Banks though.
