Louis: What year are you planning to do after this

Louis Morgan said...

Probably the official lead or supporting of 2013.

RatedRStar said...

Louis I just have a feeling your not gonna like The Boys in The Band lol =D, which is why I think Frey will finish last.

1)Alec Guinness
2)Karl Malden
3)Trevor Howard
4)Donald Sutherland
5)Leonard Frey

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Like last year, can you do Supporting first.

Robert MacFarlane said...

My incredibly scattershot prediction:

1. Malden
2. Frey
3. Howard
4. Sutherland
5. Guinness

Do me a favor; if when you re-watch Kelly's Heroes and you end up liking Rickles more than Sutherland, review him too. That ended up happening to me.

Michael Patison said...

I have absolutely no idea:
1. Karl Malden
2. Trevor Howard
3. Alec Guinness
4. Leonard Frey
5. Donald Sutherland

Luke Higham said...

I haven't got a clue either, but will predict Karl Malden to take the win.

What were your thoughts on Robert Downey Jr's performance in Iron Man, as well as your rating for him

In terms of movies that center around gay people or LGBT people for that matter in the 1970s, I think Sunday Bloody Sunday or Deep Red is probably the best to being well, well grounded if you get me.

The Boys in The Band is just, um well say im looking forward to seeing your reaction Louis =D.

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: I probably will do supporting first.

As for Downey I'd give him a 4.5 as he made the film with his performance, and unlike most leads of superhero films was not overshadowed in the slightest by the villain. He found the perfect tone, and proved to be perfect casting for the character. I do think they actually exploited his performance in the sequels though since they relied too much on his banter scenes.

Mark said...

Now that Hackman is in the Lead, there might be no 5 Brennans performances this year in Supporting. I hate it when that happens.

1. Malden
2. Howard
3. Guiness
4. Sutherland
5. Frey

Matt Mustin said...

I LOVED Downey in the first Iron Man, REALLY liked him in The Avengers, liked him a lot in Iron Man 3, and didn't care for him AT ALL in Iron Man 2, but that was mostly due to the writing.

Matt Mustin said...

Also, just for future reference, could you consider reviewing Gabriel Byrne in Miller's Crossing. Brilliant, understated performance.

Oh, and my predictions:
1. Guiness
2. Malden
3. Sutherland
4. Howard
5. Frey

Louis: off topic, if the star wars prequels were anywhere as good as the originals, when it comes to direction & writing, who do you think should've been cast as the main characters, as well as directorial choices for each film.

Luke Higham said...

My Directorial choices are
Ep1: Steven Spielberg
Ep2: Ang Lee
Ep3: David Fincher

Louis Morgan said...

Lee is probably a perfect choice in that he's good director but does not have an overwhelming personal style like Fincher and Spielberg do. Spielberg's style though probably would be a good match though. Fincher is not ideal in terms of a series, but under him there surely would have been a great sense of dread.

As for the main two players I think McGregor was a good choice and probably would have excelled with a decent script. As for Anakin, I say Ben Foster for the most intense descent into evil possible.

Luke Higham said...

Louis Morgan: McGregor really deserved better and could have given as good of a portrayal as Alec Guinness's take on the character.

I like to ask, what were your five most disappointing movies.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Funny you mention Foster, I just watched him play the ultimate nice guy in Ain't Them Bodies Saints. If you want a testament to his acting prowess, watch that and 3:10 to Yuma back to back.

Matt Mustin said...

Ben Foster is one of the most underrated actors out there.

Mark said...

I will argue to my dying day that George Lucas was not the most talented director to direct a Star Wars movie. I say Irvin Kershner was a better director. I might be slightly biased though since I can't stand the prequels.

Robert MacFarlane said...

Uh, not many people will debate you there, Mark. I sure as shit won't. I will argue that Revenge of the Sith is a camp classic, though.

"It's from my point of view that the JEDI are evil!" It's so nice to see Darth Vader acknowledge other viewpoints.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: what are your thoughts on Avatar.

Kevin said...

Luke:
I thought Avatar was groundbreaking in terms of visuals and pretty enjoyable as a whole, though the story was not very original.

In my opinion, the best Sci-fi film of 2009 was undoubtedly District 9. I just love that film.

Robert MacFarlane said...

The best sci-fi movie of 2009 was Moon. I win.

Luke Higham said...

Kevin: I agree with you on the visual side, although the story was unoriginal & just couldn't sympathize or like any of the characters. Moon with District 9 are two of the top ten sci-fi films of the last decade:

Sharlto Copley gave his best performance so far and Sam Rockwell also gave another Great performance in his resume.

Luke Higham said...

adding to last comment: I did like Sigourney Weaver's Grace, Stephen Lang was fine although, once again a one dimensional villain in a James Cameron film. What were your thoughts on Lang

Robert MacFarlane said...

Lang was my favorite thing about Avatar for his mugging alone.

Kevin said...

koook: Well Moon was a close second for me, and Rockwell gave the best performance of his career outside of his "Rockwellian" performances, like in Seven Psychopaths or Galaxy Quest

Luke Higham said...

Kevin: agreed

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Are there any performances, that you're confident of getting a 5 from Louis.

I'm quite confident with these 5:
Gary Oldman - Sid & Nancy
Jim Carrey - Eternal Sunshine
Paul Giamatti - Sideways
Bruno Ganz - Downfall
Leonardo Dicaprio - The Departed

Robert MacFarlane said...

^ Here's some predictions from me:

Darren McGavin in A Christmas Story
David Carradine in Kill Bill Vol. 2
Jeff Goldblum in The Fly
Rutger Hauer in Blade Runner
Klaus Kinski in Aguirre the Wrath of God
Steve Buscemi in Fargo
Sam Rockwell in Moon
Edward G. Robinson in Scarlet Street
John Wayne in The Searchers (which I will be dreading)
Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski

Louis Morgan said...

Luke: Pretty much dislike Avatar in every regard. Lang was the best part I guess.

Luke Higham said...

His performance, I might've taken for granted. I haven't seen it for three years and felt that he is proven enough to deliver a very good villain, if the plot was not like Dances of Wolves.

His Best performance was definitely in Gods & Generals, which I found to be quite underrated

Luke Higham said...

What were your thoughts on the counselor and the cast in general.

Kevin said...

Luke: Well I can say the most memorable scene for me has got to be the "bolito" scene at the end. The scene with Cameron Diaz on the car was hilarious though.

Anyway, I thought the cast did all they could with the material that they were given.

Luke Higham said...

Kevin: thoughts on Fassbender

Kevin said...

Luke: I guess he was fine and did all that he could, he really did try, but saying that, his performance is definitely a far cry from his work in Shame or Hunger

Kevin said...

Anyway, anyone seen the movie A Single Shot starring Sam Rockwell? He gives a tremendous performance in it. Maybe Louis can review it for his alternate line-up for 2013 Best Actor

Louis Morgan said...

Yes I've seen it. I did not really care for the film itself, but Rockwell's performance is well worth mentioning.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: have you seen the counselor, if so what were your thoughts on the film and fassbender's performance.

Louis Morgan said...

I haven't seen it.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: which films disappointed you the most?

Louis Morgan said...

I really don't have any great disappointments to name as I try to moderate my expectations, but I do wish Only God Forgives did not have such a tepid pace.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: Where there any positives from your viewing of it

Louis Morgan said...

I liked Kirstin Scott Thomas and Vithaya Pansringarm's performances, and loved the cinematography and production design.

Luke Higham said...

Louis: without spoilers, did you like Daniel Bruhl in Rush

RatedRStar said...

I kinda want Louis to surprise us with his opinion on Daniel Bruhl when it comes to his review of him, it ll make it more exciting and less predictable =D.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: Hopefully he'll be reviewed first, knowing Fassbender & Leto look obvious 5's.

In your opinion, are there any performances to be reviewed in the coming year or so, that might get 5s from louis.

Luke Higham said...

added to last comment:
Remaining alternative years

RatedRStar said...

Yes lots, far too many to list.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: What Ratings do you think these may get:
Gary Oldman: Sid & Nancy
Jim Carrey: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Paul Giamatti: Sideways
Bruno Ganz: Downfall
Leonardo Dicaprio: The Departed

Matt Mustin said...

Luke:
Oldman: 5
Carrey: 5
Giamatti: 4.5
Ganz: 5
DiCaprio: 5

Michael McCarthy said...

1. Karl Malden
2. Trevor Howard
3. Donald Sutherland
4. Leonard Frey
5. Alec Guinness

RatedRStar said...

I would agree with Matt, although, I need to rewatch The Departed, since ive practically dumped it and started dating Infernal Affairs if you get me =D.

Plus the Infernal Affairs is so cool, I mean you have, the two biggest stars at that point (Tony Leung and Andy Lau) the two biggest comedic actors (Chapman To and Louis wll be surprised to hear that Eric Tsang is known more for comedic work than drama) and then best of all, you have an actor who is a part time actor, part time Death metal singer =D

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: What were your thoughts on 12 years a Slave.

RatedRStar said...

I thought it was great =) it wasnt my favorite film of 2013 but its in top 5 definately.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: What is your favourite?

RatedRStar said...

Frozen.

Luke Higham said...

RatedRStar: I saw it a couple of hours ago, my favourite disney film since Beauty and the Beast or The Lion King. Also really liked Elsa's Number 'Let it Go'. My second favourite of the year so far, although that is very likely to change, since I'm watching Wolf of Wall Street. 12 Years a Slave's my number 1 and will likely remain that way

Luke Higham said...

Finished watching Wolf of wall Street, Dicaprio gives his best performance, and Mcconaghuey is Extremely Entertaining in his ten minute appearance near the beginning of the film.

Luke Higham said...

Has anyone seen Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom

Louis Morgan said...

I have. It isn't terrible but it is very uninspired.

Luke Higham said...

What did you think of Elba, I heard his older scenes with make up were quite distracting

Louis Morgan said...

Elba does not look like Mandela and they to overcome this near the end of the film, and fail miserably. Elba's performance is rather like the film, he isn't bad, but his performance just is not anything worth nothing either. I would say though, despite looking far less like the man, that I preferred him over Morgan Freeman in Invictus.

Luke Higham said...

Have you seen Nebraska Yet?

Louis Morgan said...

Not yet.

Michael McCarthy said...

I saw Nebraska on Wednesday. It was actually very entertaining and the relationship between the father and son was portrayed beautifully, mucho kudos to Bruce Dern and Will Forte. I also really liked June Squibb as Dern's wife, which I thought was another very well-written character.

Matt Mustin said...

Has anybody seen Her?

Michael McCarthy said...

YES. It's one of my favorite movies of 2013. I rooted for the relationship between Joaquin Phoenix and the OS to succeed harder than I root for most human relationships in movies. Honestly one of the best love stories I've seen on film.

Michael Patison said...

I thought Nebraska was poorly written. The characters had decent depth, but the entire thing was severely lacking dialogue that wasn't unbearably clunky.

Michael McCarthy said...

Michael: Would you say it's still worth seeing for the cast? Because I certainly would.

Michael Patison said...

Perhaps. I didn't think it was terrible, just not particularly worthwhile. There are moments of greatness in the acting, but I'm not sure if those are worth it.
